You don't even know how happy I was to see this!! dave haley needs more coverage and this was great to see, especially with george, another one of my favorite drummers, would love to see more, thanks gkdrummer!!!
This just shows how good david haley really is. Kollias showed more diversity but Haley was doing some better groove and planned accents. No body really won... if anything the viewer wins.
Hello George, my name is richard, I am French and I am a fan of Nile. This session jamming is brilliant, a perfect precision when you play together. I would like to know how to play the drum as you in the future, you are a god of thedrum for me. Do you think of coming a day in Genève to show us your techniques? That would allow me to meet you and he could speak with you, in spite of my English of low level. Here is I hope to meet you a single day or with Nile. Goodbye.
Just to add to your comment, Derek also stated at his clinics that Death Metal was the last form of music he fell in love with. So He has an advantage over a lot of players because he started by playing other forms of music before death metal
Even if George isn't fully confident in this style of music (I think he is), I think he is to be commended for trying to branch out. He works his ass off and I'm fucking impressed that he would go out there and attempt this. I'm only a wanna-be drummer so I if I don't compare this back-to-back with a lifelong funk drummer, it sounds damn good to me. Again, considering that extreme metal drumming is what formed him as a drummer.
Check out my channel to see my Tap Tap Revenge (actually Tap Studio) version of Kafir! Of course, the notes are synced with the drums :) skip to about 1:37
Music is - hopefully - not JUST a talent show, but it is that as well. Everyone is different, the best players usually more so than others. But, of course you can and should compare. Comparisons can however be made tactfully and with insight instead of resorting to bitter, immature expressions that come from a base source not to be further discussed in this small space. Of course they're showing off, that's what performances are all about and that's often where the passion comes from! Add my 2c.
@gilswc01 Some drummers (myself included) aren't too into the whole "solo drumming" thing. I'm not saying that is how Dave feels but it might be. Eitherway, his drum performances on the albums he has recorded, as well as his live performances, speak for themselves...hes one of the best there is.
I actually thought Dave Halley had some very, very nice grooves/fills. And his double bass was no joke! George's groove was awesome and totally solid but his fills left me to want a bit more "artsy fartsy".
I did say as much more or less. It's the same way Benny'd never be able to play metal the same way George does, just vice versa. Someone who does something as a main style is inevitably going to have more nuanced and fitting playing for it than another drummer that later adopts it. George did a remarkably good groove vid, but I'm sure it isn't quite the same level as others, even if it's indistinguishable to the guys that are more into rock and metal drumming (Such as myself).
While I do agree that Derek Roddy can survive in any musical environment and do a fantastic job, to say George is just fast with a smaller amount of versatility is kinda unfair. George plays death metal all year every year with Nile so branching out is harder for him to do then Derek Roddy who dosen't play that much death metal any more, hence why Derek can explore other areas of playing.
Also, why are people comparing? Honestly? Drumming (and music in general) is NOT a talent show. No 2 drummers ever practice the same thing so one gets better at something the other one isn't working on and vice versa. If no 2 musicians ever spend the same amount of time on something as the next then what is there to compare? No one's showing off, there just practicing and playing because their compassionate about it. That's my 2 cents.
Yeah I got ya. I mean, I see what you're saying by practicing one paritcular style for so long. If you work on chops for death metal for a whole month, then your ability to play jazz or some other opposite spectrum of death metal surely will be effected. Maybe not tremendously, but it may set you back a bit in another style.
There is SO much shit that Derek Roddy can do infinitely better than Kollias. Roddy is one of the most well-rounded drummers there is. Not only is he a supreme Death Metal drummer, but he is extremely well-versed in almost any other genre of music. The guy can survive in any musical environment. Kollias is just fast.. With a much smaller amount of versatility.
While I think his playing on that video is undoubtedly excellent, there is a noticeable lack of the confidence in his playing that he has with extreme metal. Put him in a groove-oriented scenario next to Benny Greb, or a jazz jam alongside Steve Smith, you are going to see that that isn't his major strength. His playing is great in that video, don't get me wrong, but I think that there is a subtle but noticeable difference between the way he plays in that context and a full time groove drummer.
Oh yeah, you're absolutely not wrong. I mean, it'd be like the jazz guys trying to do metal; you could tell it wasn't their main thing, even if they were playing all the same stuff. Still though, as I'm sure you'd agree with, it was an extremely good take on jazz; probably a 95% if the other guys (Benny Greb) are a 100%.
That is all good and everything, but it still remains that Roddy is quite a bit better than Kollias in almost every aspect other than Metal. I've never seen anything that proves otherwise.
the two best drummers in the world playing together!
As a Greek/Australian metalhead, this is the greatest video! Why i'm only seeing this now is ridiculous!
excellent video!!!!!George you're an incredible human being in all senses,Dave is great artist too:-))))!!!!!awesome show!!!!!
THIS IS GREAT!!!!! DECADES BEHIND THE KIT!!!!! GOD BLESS!!!!!!
You don't even know how happy I was to see this!! dave haley needs more coverage and this was great to see, especially with george, another one of my favorite drummers, would love to see more, thanks gkdrummer!!!
This stuff should happen more often with metal drummers :)
So many couldn’t compete though e
This just shows how good david haley really is. Kollias showed more diversity but Haley was doing some better groove and planned accents. No body really won... if anything the viewer wins.
great vid once again george! keep up the great work!
Excellent jam guys, love it!!
PORTNOY, BUDDY RICH, ALEX VAN HALEN, IGOR CAVELERA --Feeling it in all those styles!!!!
Two monsters of drummers
Doing duos is a good idea, George.
And David Haley is a bloody skilled drummer, man. Congrats !

WOW!!!!! BIG TURNOUT!!!!! 😉❤️🙏🥁🎶
Dave Haley is being humble here, you can tell he's holding back
Now, we just need a jam with D Rod!!!
wow its awesome to see George play here...the first time i saw him he was strictly a death metal type of player now hes doing it all
A-FUCKIN-MAZING. Both of em.
damn George is killing it, your all fucking crazy, George has mastery technical skills.
ah i waspretty much front row for this :)
@Drummerboy69ify Yes, he is. He switched his Yamaha and Paiste endorsements for Pearl and Zildjian.

There both so good they can be brothers
Very nice

Show's that Kollias got much more than just blasting
Niceeee dudes!
Dave could do SO much more... He just gave George the spotlight for this one hahaha
@MaelstromHellblast I saw that too!
he had a big grin like he knew.
Even if George isn't fully confident in this style of music (I think he is), I think he is to be commended for trying to branch out. Im a bit late but George has extensive jazz and improve background with formal schooling! He's way comfortable! 😉
@Kathabasis He's from Korinthos if I spelled right, and imo calling him a drum machine is rather an offense :P
@thedrumsking235997 Yup, that's George's mighty single ankle of doom right there.
δώσε ρε παιχταρά Κόλλια!
i was there :)
Pretty sure George and Dave said WE weren't allowed to film...
Did I just see Kollias do a drum roll with one hand..... god damn....or do I need glasses lol
@thedrumsking235997 No kidding! Amazing talent and ability.
For string instruments, i usually recommend people start off with something else than death metal. But i can see how it'll be very different on drums!

Kollias WIN!!!!!!!!!!!

I actually thought Dave Halley had some very, very nice grooves/fills. And his double bass was no joke! George's groove was awesome and totally solid but his fills left me to want a bit more "artsy fartsy".
3:25 kollias wow!
in 4:52 its just george right foot right?
@gilswc01 Maybe because psycroptic its his band, listen Dave in Ruins, sorry for my english

Well, seen George's latest? He's indistinguishable from a legitimate. full time jazz drummer, except for one very short and subtle blast beat :P
@Zer0MT so f**king awesome!!!!!!!!!
@ 1:17 Thank you George for showing me that even the gods can make mistakes, Gives me a little more confidence... No wait, hes doin that on purpose :O
THE BEST IN DEATH METAL.
@MALSIV sooooooooo much more than a blast beater :)
@gilswc01 Wrong. And listen to Blood Duster and Ruins, he plays for them too.
ive seen what kollias can do, but could someone send me a link of a vid of haley at his best and one for roddy too?
Hehehe seeing George loosing his stick make me remember that he is human! ;)
And whoever bothers to think that they might be playing what they want to play and not what they could play.

I swear i could slowly feel my eyes pushing out of their sockets..
I was front row for that session, go perth australia 6056
Midland dawg 👊🏻
@@alee7275 Getting bashed at Centrepoint station was my fondest memory. Ahh memories.
@@Andrewdoesbass 😂 Ahh yes! Memories of getting chased from CentrePoint to Midland Gate hearing bottles bust on the sidewalk behind me.

id like to see george kollias go up against morgan agren, or terri bozzio.

@MaelstromHellblast No, see, he was instructed by his alien overlords to lose that stick so that we thought he was human...
i wish i could do that and get paid for it
@brutalgoth pourqoi genève quand tu est français? tu vives prêt de la suisse?
/watch?v=x1flax6F1QU
@somedrummer94 I'm fairly sure Dave DESTROYS George in technical ability.
Dave looks kinda like romain goulon in this vid lolled b then beard + hair

Two monsters!!
Kollias is better but I love psycroptic too much.....:))
Ahh, no. Benny is much more about the small details.
2 lightning speed drums do not stack well
