My home away from home. I love this place! The people are amazing, the surf can be epic, hiking up the mountain for the view is like no other. If you aren’t from there just be respectful and smile. If you have a rental car, leave the windows down and nothing in the car. Don’t be at the beach after dark unless you are with someone who is from there. And if you do get jammed up, be a warrior and handle your business. They aren’t like the mainland, they won’t beat you down and kill you. Win lose or draw, shake hands and it’s over. That’s Makaha.
Visited Makaha for a day last week (March) at the recommendation of an employee of our resort. We were looking for a strong shore break for the kids to do boogie boarding and it delivered. We were so obviously tourists carrying the striped hotel towels and for other reasons. We shared some tree shade with some locals for a few hours and they were nothing but friendly. We found it quite welcoming. When we went there were at least a dozen people out on the surf waves and it was incredible to watch.
I stopped by today to try to snorkel. But the waves deterred me from trying to fight through the break. Do people typically only snorkel when the water is calmer? I’m a decent swimmer. Just wasn’t sure what the norm is for snorkeling.
that was probly a good call. I think the overwhelming majority of people who snorkel Makaha do it through one of the tour boats operating out of Waianae and Koolina. I think scuba divers are out there often too. every now and then you see freedivers head out there from the shore.

We had an absolute blast in Makaha! Everyone was very friendly and we got invited to a family bbq! Which we joyfully attended! Best memories ever 🌴
That sounds like the aloha we are famous for 🤙
I'm a local from Los Angeles and everybody is mean to me in L.A. lol

Tree shade at Makaha is the best shade! Sounds like your day was about as perfect as it gets out there. Thanks for sharing
Red hair, blue eyes, love the west side

What's dangerous, the waves or the people?
