Galaxy S23 or S23 Ultra? Also, if you enjoyed the video feel free to subscribe and like it. Thank you for taking the time to watch it!
Sure i choose normal s23 over the s23 ultra
Cheaper and small beast
S23 definitely 😍.
I love mine and I'm getting great battery, which was all that was missing on my previous s22.
Smaller ok, no way the S23 is worth $200 more than the Pixel 7. Samsung needs to drop their prices, they are not Apple lol
Preordered 256gb S23!
I traded in my 256GB Silver OnePlus 8T for a 512GB Green Galaxy S23+ through my carrier. Best upgrade ever!
I've got the same size in the iPhone 14 Pro and really wish there were more Android phones in this size. Not a huge fan of how everything has gotten so huge recently.
iPhone 14 Pro is much heavier and also bigger due to the stainless steel rim and slightly larger bezels however
@@itsConnor28 I mean the 6.1” iPhone 14 Pro. True though that it is quite heavy with its stainless steal body.
Yea, I have the 13pro and I really like the 6.1 inch screen
I've literally sold my iPhone 13 Pro today and have now got this phone. Apart from just preferring android to iOS this feels like a very good upgrade, battery life seems like it's going to be very good too
14pro was so heavy . instant return for me and got standard S23 instead.hope Apple will ditche stainless steel and use lighter materials for future models maybe then i will switch back
100% nailed it on this video. Battery life was the only negative on the s22 and the battery on the s23 has improved a lot. Perfect 6.1" size in hand.
Yeah 6.1" is the best size hope s24 have 45whrs fast charging too like plus version
Indeed. Battery life is much beter. About 2 days! I'm a happy s23 owner
@@michelvanlommen4092 what kind of screen on time are you getting? And has the standby time improved any?
@@5150crazyfun like 2u30m hours screentime a day, so about 4,5 houres before i reload . A lot of you tube. But i load the phone just 85% en reload when 15%. So if you are a heavy user i can asure you that one full load will bring you easely through the day
@@damianwojcikiewicz3951 i haven't experienced any 🤷
Man, I wish I didn't "need" the crazy cameras and pen of the S23 Ultra, cause I definitely like the idea and feel of a smaller phone, especially when carrying it around in your pocket all day. I honestly just want an "Ultra" experience on a much smaller device. Awesome review!
That would be great!
Lesser known things I love about S23: vapor chamber cooling = never gets hot; light performance mode; you can set the max battery charge level to 85% which is really awesome for longterm battery life.
It is the sd 8 gen 2 why it doesn't get hot, not the cooler.
Think about it, if it is producing heat how would it dissipate without heating the phone.
An analogy would be ACs with big hot radiators outside
@@comfortable_east um AC units dont have a radiator, so your comparison isnt a real thing. I think you mixed up & were thinking a cars radiator is also part of the AC system....
@@srobeck77 SD= snapdragon
And SD 8 gen 2 is the SoC. It's efficiency (performance/watt) is on par with apple A16 bionic, there's a great video by Geekerwan.
I didn't know the exact name of the structures in an AC (air cooler) so I looked up.
The part I was referring to is apparently called the condenser, which is just a winding hollow tube with hot fluid running within it. Winding course provides it with higher surface area, which helps dissipate heat more efficiently.
It is my bad for confusing it with a radiator, one dissipates heat by radiation and convection, the condenser by radiation convection and evaporation.
According to the laws of thermodynamics, energy can neither be created nor destroyed, just converted from one form to another. A cooling system only “transfers” heat from one place to another. It doesn't magically vanish it.
I still stand by my point because the s23 doesn't have fans in it like a gaming phone. So whatever heat it is producing has to come out from somewhere, which was the case for s22, but it doesn't. Meaning, the SoC has become a lot efficient.
The cooling system you are mentioning is a minor factor in the thermal discharge by the phone.
I hope I got my point out right this time.
@@comfortable_east a condensor and radiator are not the "same thing" hence why they have different names. You confused yourself (again) by try to cut and paste google searched definitions without having a true understanding of things.
@@srobeck77 Lol I admitted it was my bad for confusing the two, if you have read my comment properly. But they more or less perform the same goal, dissipate heat.
The principle and mechanism they are based on are the same, even though they have different name.
I know clock and watch are different things, but they work on the same principle and mechanisms (digital or analog).
And what do you mean by having "true understanding"? Do I have to be a mechanical or electrical engineer to know and comment on things which are high school level science stuffs?
Thank you for doing an S23 review! Been waiting since launch, not everyone cares about the Ultra!
Thanks for watching!
they need a smaller size ultra
Watching this video on my phantom black S23 256Gb, upgraded from a S8(Exynos) after almost 6 years. I wish they offered a higher ram/storage variant though, I wanted at least 512gb but I like this form factor more. I was tempted by the Zenfone 9 last summer but I gotta say I am glad I've waited a little longer
Hey @TheDeathstar2000 can you please let me know the screen on time you get planning to buy one
I just pre order in black today. How's the battery ?
How's the haptic feedback
I always keep my battery between 80% and 30% and I am a power user but I would say you could get 6hrs of constant youtube, twitch, and various streaming with full charge and easily a full day if you are using regular apps and streaming just every now and then. I recommend spending a little bit of time in the battery settings menu, there is a light mode that extends battery life with a negligeable performance loss (unnoticeable in regular use and gets turned off in games automatically) and various modes and tweaks you can switch on and off + the usual list of apps you can prevent from consuming battery in the background
@@chriswest2290 If you mean when typing, it is very noticeable, definitly stronger than my Galaxy S8 but I would say it is in the right spot where it is not annoying. At first I was missing the 3D touch home button that I have had on my previous phone for 6 years but I quickly got used to it and there are also gestures and double taps that make up for it
I am really impressed with the front lookof S23. Even though the screen is quite small, it will work well with my current tablet s7. Most importantly, it fits my pockets perfectly
why dont you fly better
S23 with the cameras of the ultra and 45w charging!
I have the s21 and I love it!
Nice review as always!
Id recommend turning off fast charging in the settings. Not good for longterm battery health
Nice review. A comparison between S23 vs Pixel 7 pro vs Zenfone 9 would be awesome.
most images we captured came out grainy and blurry in all but the most perfect lighting.
I've been leaning toward a smaller phone with my next upgrade, and the S23 looks like a good option.
I love how Samsung still offers a small phone in the Android world. Plus I think the Samsung just looks simple and slick.
I'm a one hander. I feel so cornered in with this being my only top tier choice at the moment. I wish I could use the S23 Ultra but I just can't, it'll annoy me and I'll revert to using my older smaller phones more regularly.
Wish they could release a mini ultra size
It's not, the Zenfone 9 exists
Pixel 7 and s21 fe are great for being smaller phones
Have you tried 1-handed mode on the larger phones? works very well IMO
@@Timmeh314 one handed mode is fine my main concern is actually holding the phone, I can't "grip" the larger phones as I can the 5.8"-6.2" ones. That's why the grip case with the strap on it's back has my interest, but I've not gotten to try the phone with the case so I don't know yet
No way! I can't believe it! Someone's actually talking about the base S23 instead of the humongous brick and super expensive S23 Ultra!
I have an S22 Ultra and my wife just got the S23 Plus and yeap the sound difference is crazy! Great review!
It was a perfect and practical review. I am blown away by how smoothly you speak without any cuts. Thank you
I just bought it yesterday after having S10 for 2.5 years and i am STUNNED. Just WOW.
Does it hurt eyes?
I have been using S23 for 2 weeks now. Superb phone. Battery life is great. And camera is awesome. I highly recommend this for those who love ultimate but compact device.
I really love small phones. I have an s22 and this is the biggest phone I've used in my life. s23 looks like it improved all the right things!
Word, i agree. I have the s22 as well and the s23 is improved in every way, but it's probably not worth the upgrade
@RavDLC definitely not. Probably gonna wait a few generations like I did with my s10e
It's NOT small. It's just not as huge as a lot of other phones these days
S23 is the same size as the S22. If you wanted a smaller phone, expect to be disappointed.
Not much of an upgrade over the S22. Best to wait for the S24 or S27
I'm glad that I settle for just the regular S23 and Im loving it so far. Also just wanted to show some love here under this video few weeks back when I wanted to upgrade my phone the UA-cam algorithm for once did a great job recommend me to watch your video review and I can honestly come here and write that your review really did help me put those last decision nails to just go ahead and just upgrade to the regular S23 so thanks Matt.
Looking at the size, I guess we can say that the Galaxy S23 is the true successor to the Galaxy S10e.
More like the S10
@@Jeffvs Isn’t the S10 a little bit taller?
@@smartphonefan5226 nop. S10 was 6.1 inch tall, same as S23. The S10e was 5.8 inch. But, because the S23 has smaller bezels it's actually slightly more compact compared to S10
I still have my s10e tucked... my favorite phone by far.and still has an aux cord plug.
Matthew Awesome videos as always.Look forward to watching more. Thanks so much for sharing ✌️
Nice review, where do you get those wallpapers from?
I got this phone just over a week ago. I am loving it. Great phone. Battery life is awesome. Love the smaller phone too. I've never cared for the bigger phones. Every phone I had was the regular version (I've had iPhone's and Samsung's). I like being able to use my phone with just one hand. Lol. I really like Samsung. As much as I like Apple, I think I like Samsung's phones a little more. I always find myself returning to Samsung after getting an iPhone.
acceptable performance available
I got the S23 around a week ago to replace my S20, and the better battery and the chipset is such a game changer when compared to my old one.
I'm in the same boat, mine comes in March because of the color I chose. Is it worth it? The s20 is so good, I'm using it right now and it's still brand new and fast. When the s23 comes I feel like I'm going to regret paying 700 bucks for an "upgrade." Thoughts?
@@Tony-nl6pf if you dont use your phone for gaming or photos for everyday u wont notice differences
@@asdasda7940 Social media apps are optimized on the s23 and not s20. I got it mainly for that, we'll see if everything else is the same.
@Tony I mainly upgraded because of the battery being pretty terrible after almost 3 years on my S20, and because i was running out of storage since Samsung only offered the 128GB version then. I'd say things are a bit faster, battery is a HUGE step up, and I like how I can finally use the ultra-wide camera on instagram, snapchat and Bereal. I think it's good enough of an upgrade that you wouldn't really think you wasted money, but to be very frank, you probably won't be seeing a life-changing experience.
@lccgfilm may sound stupid but how or did you move photos over to your new phone? I hate that Samsung removed the cloud for pictures and wanted you to use onedrive but onedrive is stupid ever since they lowered the free 15gb down to 5gb plan.
YES THANK YOU finally some love for the small phone users
If it had 512GB or 1TB I'd be all over this s23. Samsung needs to start offering bigger storage options for their smaller S models or have a micro SD card slot.
My vote... micro SD card slot 👍🏿
Well samsung a53 have micro sd slot up to 1TB
Wouldn't a cloud storage fix this issue?
SD slot is never coming back and neither is 3.5mm, so move on to different fantasies....
My phone has 128gb and i still have 80gb Left lol ☠️ i'm a light User
Great job, really. I would have also liked to have seen you compare it to the Pixel.
There is something to be said about having the smaller form factor for sure. One thing Samsung need to work on in my opinion are their system haptics, whatever haptic motor they used with their S22 line simply doesn't feel as good as the competition.
wierd ive never noticed that and always turn it to the lowest settings. must be a perceived sensitivity thing or something for things that vibrate
my question is, might it be a hidden upgrade? for it to be fine?
it offers a lot of value
Good review Matthew.
Any plans to look at the ZenFone 9 which looks like it's competitor ?
Thank you .
Yeah he should compare those two
Just got myself one, huge step up from my S9 that I was using for many years.
Cant wait to go pick up my s23 today!
Very helpful review, sir! And love to see the kids. Adorable and heartwarming to watch.
you mentioned the pixel 7 in the video, can you do a comparison? that is only slightly bigger, you can still hold it in one hand for most people
Just ordered one thanks for the upload
Thank you, I'm waiting for mine to arrive in the graphite color.
THE WAY YOU DEMONSTRATED THE DIFFERENCE IN SPEAKER SOUND BETWEEN THE S23 AND S23 ULTRA, WAS INTELLEGENTLY DONE.
I love the new camera design I'm happy they got rid of the camera housing they should keep that style for a while
I like your approach. Any other reviewers when they get smaller phone which was made to be small will complain that screen could be bigger. If the upcoming Pixel 8 will be more than 6.1 inch this will be my next phone. What i don't like in this S23 is camera quality and slightly too small battery. I would rather sacrificed telephoto lens for bigger battery and even make it more chunky for longer pace of mind.
The battery is good enough tbh if you are not a power user it can last 7hrs through medium usage and camera is really good granted it's not a huge upgrade from the last S22 but it's still good. Pixel still takes better shots tho
@@Matthewmoniz.So happy! You are my favourite tech reviewer to be honest
approach the picture of the image
Nice job and thanks for checking out the speakers ...thinking it wold be cool to see the s23 vs Pixel 7
@@Matthewmoniz. great so what do I do
You can always get an iPhone 13 Mini and get an actual small phone, even that is barely "small" just somewhat reasonably sized. We used to have flagships with 4" and smaller screens, now everything is massive.
I really like base S series. thanks for the review, Matthew! 👌
My pleasure!
i like thata the s22 and s23 are really preamium feelling and looking but not flashy at all
Was eagerly waiting for this review 🎉🎉
Hope you enjoyed it!
Nice review, you covered all major aspects . Thanks man
You're very welcome!
Went from s21 ultra to s23. I was ready for something smaller and lighter. And boy is this lighter. I'm getting very similar battery life. I always thew my s21 on the charger in the evening, and I do the same with this. So no issues for me
The S23 is £900 for the 256GB model in the UK! The same OPPO Find N2 Flip is £850 (also 256GB/8GB), so for me, in my region, if I want a smaller phone, then the OPPO is a solid alternative. Though it depends on when you buy the S23, as pre-order deals are now closed. Obviously, the US has very limited choice because of their anti-consumer smartphone market.
I hear Germany doesn't allow Oppo phones to be sold... some dumb software patent nonsense?
Yeah but oppos have crap OS.. so much extra nonsense, or at least they used to ive had oppo phones before not a great experience
@@aadi8568 they are much better now. In fact, color OS is my favorite skin. It would be worth retrying as I have come away. Impressed.
Good and Precise review...awesome work and thank you!
Thanks for watching!
It's worth mentioning when reviewers mention the 45w charging, in the case of Samsung its just marketing. It makes about 10 minutes difference on charge time because most of the time it's not charging at 45w. Get a OnePlus, Oppo for actual Super Fast Charging. Samsung's implementación is a bit bigger a con.
I wanted a 6" phone and perordered this s23...aaaand it's a terrific phone. it's just as you described. 👍🏻
Glad to hear you're enjoying it! Thanks for watching
I'm so happy i bought this powerhouse. I'm all into compact flagships than massive slabs which become a burden to carry around
wow that battery life is pretty impressive. i think it can match last years s22+. just shows how efficient the 8 gen 2 is.
wutchu mean match? its like 10% better (bigger battery helps too)
Small phones are just awesome...🔥🔥
Great review! The S23 seems like a great phone. I switched from the S21 to a Pixel 7 and I'm loving the experience so far. For me, the Pixel exclusive features make it worth it over the Galaxy... but man do I miss Samsung Dex! I used it all the time.
@@whatisthis7688 The fingerprint on the pixel 7 is trash, dump it asap and get the s23 plus not the s23 ... way better battery and performance
Which pixel features do you like? I'm thinking about switching too
@@frankolamar where i live s23+ is 200$+ more expensive than s23 base doesn't feel like a good deal for just bigger battery and display

Got this coming from an S8. Happy days.
*The Green S23+ is a MUST* 😫👏🏻
Man this has almost similar dimensions to the s8 plus which was one of my all time favorite phones - but it’s sad that this is considered small these days cause I remember the s8+ being a huge phone. I miss the days of smaller screens and smaller hardware honestly.
Matt - still think this is worth it in 2024? I’d be putting down my 13 pro max which has no issues but I’ve been wanting to get back into android and a smaller frame.
I'm really surprised about the iPhone video here. Really expected it to be less contrasty and not so bright. Do you have an HDR setting on your iPhone for video? The 14 never takes videos like that unless it's edited or has a setting that makes the video look different. Some of the highlights also look blown up on the iPhone
Out of the S23 series, I think you either go with S23 or S23 ultra. S23+ is just sit in the middle where the price getting closer to S23 ultra with only providing the exact same functionality as regular S23
Ya i feel like the S23+ is an upsell to the Ultra. I agree s23 or ultra.
@@MatthewMoniz Such a pity. S23+ is probably the perfect size for most people. But I guess Samsung want the Ultra to be their main and only flagship.
Rumors say that the Plus model will be removed starting with the S24 series.
@@DrDre9998282 i think they should kill the plus and make s23 and s23u. But s23 should be 6.3 inches that's a good middle ground on both

I'd be tempted to go that route and try to do with less but I want more storage than 256. I looked at my phone's storage now, and I'd be cutting it close with about 50gbs short of 256. I feel I always get the flagship because of FOMO, but I honestly don't need the ultra.
You could get some network attached storage device (even just an old PC in the DMZ in router settings and the proper port(s) forwarded. I agree though, it's nice to have local storage and more is better. But you can do things like only keep music that is your absolute favorite or stuff that is hard to find, and for the rest just use UA-cam Music or whatever streaming service floats your boat. I don't even bother trying to stream stuff from myself anymore, just have about 10GB of tunes on the device out of 92GB on my other storage, all on my 128GB phone,
Masterphone i get 7hrs SOT even a little more with draining from 85% (Battery charging protection on) to 15% that's crazy for such a small phone so in the end, it's a small handy pocket friendly beast! 👊👊
Preorder storage bonus is only avaliable unitl today in Europe
Did you use a 128 or 256 Go version of the S23 ? that could explain the lower result in some benchmark (UFS3.1 vs UFS4.0)
256gb is a must. Samsung plops on like 50gb of bloatware (and for the andriod OS)
The 4k30 selfie video looks SO much better in the Galaxy, wow. I've been an iPhone user for almost 10 years, and I'm shocked at how extremely processed it looked compared to the Galaxy.
Yo Marques, are you going to talk about the strange camera blur phenomenon on s23/s23+?
I wish they made it in 4.7 inch with just a good 1 camera setup. Perfect. Whatever happened to small phones? I’m tempted to get an iPhone SE.
Love the three of them. I have the ultra but ilI noticed volume is too high in the right speaker when watching videos, it's a problem
I feel a lot better watching this review; I was going to jump for the Ultra, but this one still looks reasonable.
So funny that this is considered a small phone. It gives me carpel tunnel! Thank goodness for the one-handed thing from good lock.
I'm loving my s23, coming from an apple 14 pro max user. It's feels like a regular pro and hands down it feels good in the hand. Great cameras, great sound, beautiful screen and smooth software. Worth the buy.
worth the buy to view outdoors
@MatthewMoniz. How does it compare to the S10 which I have. Thinking about getting the S23 although my S10 is just fine. Is the S23 about the same size as S10. I know the battery is bigger on the 23. Are there any downsides compared to S10 which suits my usage just fine.
wondering the exact same thing but with my Note 8 that is serving me just fine minus sort of being tired of the huge size!
I got my s23 almost a month ago I love it
Love the design...it is like the iPhone we never got after 11
Seeing this really makes me regret not getting the 11 Pro instead of the Pro Max.
Great video! Hi Mat, i need help, what's your best recommendation to buy? is it s23, One Plus 11 or Iphone 14??
iPhone 14 does not have 120 Hz display or a 3rd camera. One Plus does not have wireless charging but is a bit cheaper (and charges faster). One Plus is much bigger. Personally I like s23
@@itsConnor28 How about the camera department? Is S23 produces better quality than One Plus 11 & Iphone 14?
The iPhone 14 is the winner in terms of camera.
Photos and videos from the iPhone are top-notch.
Do you recommend upgrading from an S21?
Useful video thanks for this i think i made a good decision in getting the s23
I really wish there were more phones this size

I had LG G6 for 7 years and was and still is a good phone but battery is not holding charge for long or just shuts down…
So after research I opted for S23 256GB and never looked back..Not to big not too small, doesn’t bother you in the pocket,I am not computer geek but performance is very fast and responsive..As loyal Telus customer (Canada) I got promo,so price was right and choice was obvious.Prior to S23 I never owned Apple 🍎 or Samsung phones, only Nokia,LG and BB…I hope it doesn’t let me down…

I upgraded from an iPhone 11 to the S23. The iPhone 11 was actually my first iPhone. Each brand has their pros and cons. I decided to go back to Samsung because the camera options on the S23 are nearly identical to the 14 pro, and $200 cheaper. Everything else is practically the same experience. That blue text comes at a premium! S23 has been great so far. Don't miss the retina display at all!
Good for you. Most people are too prideful to switch from iPhone to Android.
