- We are getting close to getting the Gravely Custom Convertible 7.6 HP L8 walk behind tractor engine running now! This video shows the assembly of the Wico XH magneto. During reassembly the bearing support plate is reinstalled then the coil and coil core. The felt lubricating block (cam wick) was replaced and the felt was oiled. The only parts that were replaced during the rebuild were the points and condenser; everything else was only reconditioned if required. The points were set at .015 according to the service manual.
This is not nearly as intimidating as I had thought. Renovating a magneto just ain't that hard! As you watch me recondition this magneto, you will be able to do the same. I tested the magneto along the way during the renovation process to avoid troubleshooting later.

Really awesome. I know it has been a few years and you may not even have the Gravely anymore but thank you for the absolutely excellent series on the Wico Magneto.
Yep I sold it but I had a good time fixing that mower. It was in the family my whole life

Thank you so much for your video. I’m trying to get my old gravely going and no spark now I no why thank you so much.
Glad I could help
I realize it's been a few years, but thanks for this excellent series on the Gravely magneto. I must admit I talked to my computer at 7:45 when you forgot to put the ground on the coil retainer especially since in the previous video you wondered if it should touch the case.
I have been having trouble with points lately. I rescued an LS two years ago, put new points and condenser and it took right off. This winter it quit and I swapped combinations of two coils, two condensers, new spark wire, three spark plugs and a brand new set of points. No matter what I did I seemed to have intermittent spark. Finally I took some points from an old mag and filed them and now the tractor runs. I've been getting points from Napa and I can't see what could be wrong with them unless they have a coating on them although I filed them and still can';t get consistent spark. In the future i will stick with Wico points but I can't imagine why the others don't seem to work.
I'd order Gravely parts from Richard's Lawn There is a link in the video description. I wasn't aware NAPA had parts for a gravely! You may need to replace the coil. If the spark is weak it could be the problem.
the slightest lack of contact with the mag, and all the parts in it can some wierd things. you'd never think the mounting plate could cause a miss or non fire. but it can. they say if you can turn the mag over without a big wrench it means your advance isn't functioning correctly, i can turn mine over by hand practically, and i can only get the "catch arm" to catch if i pass it going real slow, if i spin it it doesn't catch. but it runs perfect. it must fire in the advanced state like 1 rpm and the first one. i can't get my spark plug to seal, it's been that way forever.
Another thank you! For the video on assembly! Like the tear down vid, I followed along and was able to get my wife’s new Pond Wheel Horse Ride Away Senior running! Feel free to check out my videos about it!
Glad it helped! I'll take a look at the videos! Thanks for the comment.
Nice job on the mag, Should you ever need parts info or any thing to do with any type of mag would be happy to help., Thanks and stay safe.
Thanks Randall
5 Acres on the Bayou Your very welcome God bless and stay safe
@@RandallMoore1955 Hey Mr. Randall,
Do you know of anyone who could help me with a Fairbanks Morse Magneto on my Gravely?
Thanks for your time. Zane
Any reason why you used cork gasket for cover? When tractor was originally built ,there probably weren't many choices. Cork deteriorates from wetting / drying, shrinking / expanding, and eventually lets water and dirt intrude.
It was likely what I had laying around. It works ok.
Maybe I missed this part but what was the reason you had continuity between the condenser and mag body? Good video BWT.
I explain that as best I can from 18:54 - 19:43. Thanks for watching and commenting!
I have a Wico Xh 1343. The impulse stopped working. Do you have any videos? Its on a Wisconsin
Mine didn't work at all until I took it all apart, cleaned it and reassembled it. I'd try that first. Video the entire process and talk yourself through what you are doing to help in reassembly!!
Where do u buy points& condenser?
Most all the parts can be had through the link in the video description. I even listed the part numbers for those parts. They have most everything for those old Gravley tractors.
I need help! on the back side of the coil the spring arm only engages when it feels like it. when it does it works fine so the spring does not seem to be broken, just plain dirty?
I'm not sure I can help. I sold that tractor years ago. At 8:03 I sanded the contact point so I assume you already did that as well.
