  • In this UPDATED video I introduce the MSAFE-T kit for the P320 (available now through WWW.SIGMECH.STORE and other retailers) and review the step-by-step methods I use in order to convert a previously non-manual safety P320 so that it can accept a factory manual safety lever assembly with the same specs found on the M17 or M18 models. Please note that although the MSAFE-T kit will work to convert ANY non-manual safety FCU, the grip cutting tool however is specifically made for the X-Series (and T-TEN) grip modules. (Standard grip template coming in 2024!).

    I ordered this conversion kit a while back. I got around to using it on my P320 last week. The kit worked great. I followed the videos carefully, pausing and rewinding as needed. Everything went very well. I used some small files from Harbor Freight to smooth out the side of the cut that the safety lever detent rides on. Reassembly of the FCU went well.
    I added a X carry grip and a X5 Legion flat trigger. After getting everything back together, my full size p320 feels great. I have owned and carried a several 1911s and this manual safety on my p320, feels to me like a safety on a 1911.
    Unlike a 1911, the P320 safety can be on while loading and clearing the pistol. The safety locks the trigger but does not lock the slide. The safety can also be on during a "press check" to verify if a round is chambered. The manual safety also gives more peace of mind when holstering.
    I highly recommend this kit for anyone needing to modify their FCU to allow an installation of a manual safety. This kit has very high quality components and fits tightly to the FCU to allow a proper and precise modification. This kit is a solid 5 out of 5 stars for both price and quality.

      @@SIGMECHANICS Hello there!
      As “promised” today I was busy with manual safety kit installation and it went like a charm for me.
      Most of the time I’ve spend on disassembly and reassembly 😊 , cutting FCU took about 25-30 minutes and I have managed not to destroy the template, actually it survived even without scratches. One just really have to be careful and mod is perfectly doable. Cutting grip took just 10 minutes, both sides.
      Thank you very much for very well done videos on subject (series!), keep it up!
      Thanks again and best wishes from the other side of the globe, faraway Georgia (not the USA state) 😎

    First of your videos i gave watched, and love the content and how you present it. You have done an excellent gob sir. Love the 320. However like others carrying it I have some concerns about the lack of safety on it ie…. Trigger, thumb, grip, double action like others. These have a low single action trigger pull. I carry properly and safely with hours of training. I think some type of manual safety on a carry gun is just responsible. As for a range only Queen. I safety outside of pulling the trigger is just fine.

    • @jaybdvm
      @jaybdvm 6 місяців тому

      Also a very short pull

  • @newdefsys
    @newdefsys 7 місяців тому +8

    This kit is a great idea. I love the P320, I have two of them but they are both the manual safety version. The trigger on the on the P320, for all intents and purposes, is single-action-only and a manual safety is simply a requirement for safe carry (imho).

    • @SIGMECHANICS
      @SIGMECHANICS  7 місяців тому +7

      I found a lot of people feel the same way, personally I like to have the additional option to swap back and forth, making the FCU more “modular”.

      This is essentially how I feel about _ALL_ light trigger pull semiautomatic pistols. Even with the trigger dingus Glocks have discharged uncommanded, *against* what the fanboys claim. Unless it’s got a heavy pull such as the Glock NY & NY+ then it should have at least the option for a manual safety.

      I personally have not, however I’ve had several people try it successfully. Keeping in mind that the kit is not made for use with the AXG, they had to be extra careful to not let the grip template slip (the AXG material is thinner than the poly grips). Other than that the FCU cutting is the same and very easy to do.

    • @SIGMECHANICS
      @SIGMECHANICS  5 місяців тому

      The toolkit will simply be adding a manual safety. For all intents and purposes it WILL prevent an accidental trigger pull.
      It’s actually a direct replication of the M17 military service pistol, so use will be the exact same.

    • @SIGMECHANICS
      @SIGMECHANICS  7 місяців тому +2

      Although the grip mod kit was not designed for it, I have had people successfully cut the AXG. The template is just a bit loose (requires extra tape to thicken the surface) and the AXG grip panels need to be cut by hand. FCU portion works just fine like any other P320.

      You didn’t miss anything. The two cutters will work on the FCU, I only provide a second tungsten cutter in case you want the extra “power” it provides while cutting. I recommend starting with the standard cutter and only use the tungsten if you’re comfortable. It’s simply for added convenience.

      @kldahlin That’s great! Thank you for your support!! If you’re doing 5, I recommend you make sure to take it easy and avoid as much touching of the cutting bit to the templates (avoid cutting into the template itself as best you can). I’ve heard of people doing up to 3 so I’m interested in knowing how 5 will turn out, mainly if the cutting bits will manage that many. Keep me in the loop!

    would a manual safety essentially negate the loss of saftey from the adjustable trigger when activated?

    • @SIGMECHANICS
      @SIGMECHANICS  4 місяці тому +1

      Sort of, but not really. The issue will still be present, but the addition of the MS assembly will prevent further travel of the trigger which will stop an AD where a non-MS would let it happen.
      If your preference is to have the adjustable trigger (fully tuned) then I would strongly recommend the addition of the MS.

    • @SIGMECHANICS
      @SIGMECHANICS  7 місяців тому +2

      I haven’t modded the Icarus grips, but I do see people modding the AXG successfully. The kit comes with two cutting bits. They will both work extremely well so you don’t need to use the tungsten bit per se, it comes down to personal preference. I prefer using the carbide cutter because it is more forgiving if you don’t have experience cutting.

    have any thoughts on why the pre upgrade p320 would go off when dropped, they claim the trigger was too heavy and its mass was causing it to fire when dropped, but ive seen people hit the p320 with a hanmer in the back while the gun is being pointed vertically and it also goes off, so it cant be the mass of the trigger

    • @SIGMECHANICS
      @SIGMECHANICS  6 місяців тому +1

      The hammer test vs drop test is essentially the same thing. When the gun drops to the floor and makes impact the trigger through inertia will keep moving (like how when you break hard in your car, your body keeps wanting to move forward), similarly, when you impact the gun with a hammer, your essentially causing the same motion, the transfer of energy from the hammer will go to the trigger, the trigger is in a pivot, and if the momentum is strong enough, the trigger will want to travel.
      Of course the same travel still happens with a lighter trigger, but with a light trigger there is not enough mass to overcome the internal springs and levers whereas the heavy trigger will retain more energy from the impact and therefore force passed the safeties and literally pull the trigger enough to fire.
      This can be said of pretty much all guns, it’s not exclusive to the P320.

      The reason being, I’ve made some revisions to the kit for the next batch, most notable is the upgraded material to S7 tool steel! (Even though no one has ever brought it up, I figured that for the little extra cost, I can make the MSAFE-T the absolute highest quality I could - meaning less room for errors while you cut and more chances to reuse the kit on another FCU due to less wear).

      The real answer is… maybe. That lever was a prototype I am working on (just for fun), and the over-sized design was not something I expected people to want. After making it I also started to work on a more toned down version (more of an “enhanced” safety less of a P226 type. So far I’ve gotten a lot of positive feedback from within the channel community, but not a lot outside our little “bubble”.
      Therefore I’m looking into a smaller production run, but unless the prices make sense (I don’t want you guys to pay a crazy high fee for just a prototype lever), I might have to wait until that works out (value wise). I’m actively looking now and if I find a manufacturer that works I definitely will let the community know.

      The kit isn’t specifically made for the AXG because the sides of the AXG grips are thinner than the polymer ones. That being said, a few people have successfully converted the AXG using the kit, but you have to 1. Manually retain the template steady, and 2. Remove the side grip covers and finish the cuts into the grips themselves freehand.
      They do look very nice once completed but not having done it myself I cannot say if it was a simple modification or if it took extra time to complete it.

      Although you can mod the grip and FCU in the X-Ten compact, the problem lies with the factory lever assembly. The compact version has a slide that’s wider and does not let the levers move freely (they impact the slide), I have had people modify the lever wings to accommodate this however and it does work but will require extra cutting to the factory parts.

    • @SIGMECHANICS
      @SIGMECHANICS  6 місяців тому

      No this kit is specifically for the P320. Although converting the P365 is substantially easier since you only really need to modify the grip and buy the lever.
      All P365 FCUs simply need to drop in the safety lever, no other mods are needed.

      Yes, the fact that it’s metal won’t be a problem. For example even though the MSAFET kit is not specifically for the AXG I’ve had people successfully mod the grip. I know people do mod the 365 grip too so if you have the knowledge you should be able to do it just as easily.

I'm still trying to learn of the dingus or safety blade will even help with more so holstering safety.

    Is the template steel much harder than the frame steel?

    • @SIGMECHANICS
      @SIGMECHANICS  6 місяців тому

      By a margin yes, you can cut into both the template and the FCU if you don’t manage pressure on the cutting bit. However the steel on the template was specially selected to hold up as much as possible and a chromed coating is added to add to the strength and allow a bit of contact time with the cutting tool.

    • @SIGMECHANICS
      @SIGMECHANICS  4 місяці тому

    • @SIGMECHANICS
      @SIGMECHANICS  4 місяці тому +1

      @boltblazer1670 the problem isn’t that the kit won’t work it’s that the Factory parts don’t fit that model. Technically, you can still modify the FCU and grip module but once you install the Sig Sauer factory parts, you will find the dimensions are too small for that slide.
      Edit: I just also want to add that I have had other people simply modify the factory components by shaving off some of the manual safety’s ledge so that it clears the wider slide
