    Nice video! and folks, that is why the updated version of the p320 and the new p320s are not going to go off in your holster by accident. That trigger has to move for that gun to go off, and the video is very professionally done. Thank you

      I have done a very thorough mockup of the P320 with the update from now years back and the newer x5 and p320 legions, etc. And there is no possible way the gun will go off without pulling the trigger.

    • @SIGMECHANICS
      @SIGMECHANICS  Рік тому +10

      I should also point out that in his video he stated that the reset spring was broken and Sig, claimed that was the failure. In reality, Sig, had already discontinued the use of that part because they considered the striker reset spring redundant. Therefore, that claim does not hold any weight, and the reality of the situation is most likely that the trigger was pulled inadvertently.

    15:15 A possible explanation as to why Sig reduced the sear's vertical ledge was to keep sear/striker engagement more consistent. Unlike hammer fired guns which have all relevant engagement surfaces fixed to the frame (and therefore fixed relative to each other), striker-fired guns have to account for the slop between slide and frame as well as the striker's play within its channel. So every time the slide moves forward and the striker touches the sear their engagement may be slightly different from the last. This is why when adjusting overtravel on a striker fired gun it is important to push the slide down towards the frame while testing to make sure there is enough travel to achieve break even when engagement between sear and striker are at their maximum.
    By getting the striker's leg to touch the base of the sear, Sig limits how far down the striker's leg can go, ensuring that the contact area between the striker's leg and the sear's ledge has less variation, in turn leading to a more consistent trigger pull shot-to-shot. At least, this is my (somewhat) educated guess.
    I just came across your channel. Your presentation, explanations, and attention to detail complete with measurements are fantastic! I do hope that you consider covering aftermarket trigger parts like those from Grayguns and Apex and show how they differ from OEM. In any case, keep up the great work!

  • @RileyBowman

    @10:20 I think they changed the striker safety lever design to remove any possibility of the trigger safety lever somehow "bouncing up" and allowing it to contact and disengage the striker safety. Now it is strictly a function of the trigger's position. In other words, the trigger HAS to move rearward for the safety lever to move upward and contact the striker safety.

    Love your content. I remember nearly a decade or so ago when Sig was reinventing it’s brand, they said that the stopped thinking of themselves as a firearm company and instead started thinking of themselves as an engineering company that happens to make firearms.
    It seems like they were being truthful with that statement. They are constantly analyzing their designs and making improvements to their products. People like to hate on them by saying that they use their consumers as beta testers for first-gen products, but I don’t believe that’s their intention at all. When issues do arise, they address them, and also incorporate additional changes that aren’t related to the issue they’re addressing but that make their design better.
    I actually own a pre-upgrade P320 that I never sent it. And I don’t plan on ever sending it in.

I see you may have gotten some other new things besides the pre-update FCU. You’re going to hafta polish up this one. I see some sear housing holders… nice touch!!! One question, will the pre-update FCU work with new parts??? Good luck… glad to see your work is recognized.

      Thanks @Torqd Off
      Half the battle is finding creative ways to best showcase those small parts without interrupting the viewer.
      As far as your question goes, I’d have to see. Both pre and post FCU will accept either sear housing, but I would be very interested to see how much of the pre upgrade parts inside I could fit into the updated sear housing. I assume the safety lever is no problem, but the sear may have a problem since they did change the dimensions of the housing.
      I’ll check it out and get back to you there, maybe post it as a short here…
      And FYI, i know you’ve been asking for a while now, so…I am working on a video to demonstrate the polished FCU. Just want to complete the voluntary upgrade program on my “new” chassis first. So stay tuned for that!
      Thanks for watching!

    Very interesting. I got into Sig chassis guns when they released the P250. I was a great gun if you were used to revolvers since it had a long trigger pull, but it was smooth as butter for a hammer fired gun. One of the selling points of the gun, over the other manufacturer's striker fired designs, was the ability to pull the trigger another time in the event of a light primer strike. "Second strike capability", I think they called it.
    It looks like the intention was to carry this over into a striker fired chassis format. I even remember the early P320 ads mentioning second strike capability. It appears that they fully dropped the entire concept with the P320 redesign and the term has entered the dust bin of history.

    This is a great overview - a bit behind in getting a p320 (sorry live in Commiefornia) and after getting one, been impressed with the firearm. However folks are quick to judge it citing the old drop fire issues and the reports that LEOs having AD/ND. Having an engineering background myself, this review keeps me confident in the safety. Just sad that there’s a lot of bad info out there. Wonder if anyone has data on if those ADs reported by LEOs were pre-upgrade FCUs?

    I have to be honest, my previous request for you to compare operational similarities between the P320 & P365 were completely for personal vindication… I was in a deep debate with someone on one of your videos about the P365 having basically the same mechanics. Mainly about the striker safety lever setups. They’re basically the same except one is built into the striker itself and the other is a stand alone. Otherwise, they work the same exact way. Even the sear engagement with the striker and how it’s reset and released. Anyway, again… great work

    I purchased a new M-18 about 3 years ago. After your great breakdown, it confirmed that I do have the upgraded version. Thank you!
    Since that time i purchased a Canik Mete SFX. I must say that it seems to be a far better made gun. The trigger mechanism itself is worlds better and I am FAR more accurate with it. Everything functions very smooth and no slop. Not so for the M-18. I would trust the Canik over this Sig any day.
    I am unable to pull the M-18 trigger without a slight barrel drop. With the Canik, I get absolutely no movement. I can readily get all shots within a 2-3-inch circle at 40 feet. I'm lucky to get one shot within a 4-inch circle with the M-18. I have no idea how this gun could/should get a military contract. That said, I have ordered the skeletonized advanced trigger in hopes that it helps.

      Yikes! That’s a big difference. It could be that you just shoot better with the Canik, however, there should be no drop with a trigger pull on a loaded P320 (you will have significant slide movement with no magazine).

    One of the biggest reasons the Sig and the S&W M&P will fire quicker and accidentally is because the are basically “Single Action”. The firing pin is cocked back under spring pressure. Once you touch the trigger, with very little pull and travel distance the firing pin is released forward. As compared to Glock style trigger safety on various other manufacturers, the trigger will not allow the firing pin to be released so quickly and also specifically the Glock, it’s a “Double Action” gun, the firing pin is set forward. You would have to release the Trigger safety and then pull the trigger back enough to cock the firing pin. This is one reason the triggers on Sig and M&P are lighter and quicker because of the reduced safety and travel distance. Something to keep in mind when you carry and fire these different guns.

    It would fail to go into battery 90% of the time as the slide kept braking on the disconnector. The second time it was sent back to the wrong address as the person in charge of shipping keyed the wrong zip code it and sent in off into the hood somewhere according to my tracking.

      I can’t be sure without seeing it but, If you’re only racking it 1/4” it may not be fully engaging the “main” sear ledge and therefore the striker is hooking into the “backup” ledge. It results in a weaker feel to the trigger and may be the problem. If you watch the video on P320 safety mechanisms, I do a little more exploration into the sear in that sense.

      I have one of the original p320 carry pre-ugrade ones. Recently I wanted a red dot so I ordered a slide with a Romeo red dot already on it from sig sauer. So my fcu is pre-upgrade but my slide is post upgrade. Idk if that's why yours is like that but this is the reason mine is.

      Did it ever cross your mind that these videos you see show non-upgraded firearms? It was voluntary and I doubt many law enforcement departments would remove service weapons for repair with no spare inventory to keep officers armed.

    How does an owner know if they have an old or upgraded unit?

      If you have a disconnector and a notch on your slide for the disconnector, then it’s upgraded.

    Thanks for your great video! I feel much more comfortable with the safety and function of my P320XC. I knew that I had the upgraded version of the gun. But, I still went to the sig sight before and after purchase. The thing I did not know is that the trigger on the X series was not changed! I verified this by reading the FAQs. Do you know why this is?

    • @SIGMECHANICS
      @SIGMECHANICS  Рік тому

      Thank you! Before I answer, can you clarify what you mean by “not changed”, there should be a lightened version of a trigger.

      @@SIGMECHANICS Thanks for the quick response! From the Sig Sauer FAQs "Will this affect the X-series P320s?
      Yes. However, the X-series flat trigger will not be replaced." so I take this to mean that the trigger was not changed and in fact my trigger is the flat face trigger.

    • @SIGMECHANICS
      @SIGMECHANICS  Рік тому

      I see. I believe they mean that the x-series does not require a change because it already had the newer trigger.

    • @kjacas
      @kjacas Рік тому

      @@SIGMECHANICS Well that makes sense however the trigger on my gun looks nothing like the trigger they show in their drawing. Perhaps Sig used an improved lighter flat face trigger on the x-series guns. Either way the other changes they made to the striker assembly and mechanical disconnect among others that you covered in the video enhance the safety and functionality of the gun and I am quite comfortable with the gun. I will continue to look into the trigger question and let you know if I find anything out. Thanks for your time and the video I learned a lot and I have subscribed so I am looking forward to more.
      P.S. Did you send that FCU out to get polished or do it yourself? It must be a lot easier to clean.

      Yes, I did polish it myself. I’ve been trying to get a video out on this but there’s many projects on the go. It’s coming though!

    I have a pre-upgrade model that has substantial vertical movement in the slide during trigger pull. The sear won't release the striker when dry firing unless I grab the slide and lift it upward. It never shoots its last round because it needs the upward spring pressure of a round in the mag to keep the trigger functional. I ordered the newer version sear group assembly to see if it makes a difference with this issue.

    • @SIGMECHANICS
      @SIGMECHANICS  2 роки тому +1

      @Max Weber, that’s odd. Does it only operates if you hold the slide or is that symptom intermittent? If you remove the trigger stop pin, to allow the trigger to travel further back, does it then fire? It could also benefit to lightly polish the sear and striker “hook” to eliminate some friction.

    • @max-weber
      @max-weber 2 роки тому

      @@SIGMECHANICS That's correct, the sear only releases the striker when I pull the slide upward, or there is a round in the mag pushing the slide upward via spring pressure from the magazine. I would say 99% of the time fails to release the striker. I tried to polish it like you mentioned, but the amount of vertical movement required for the sear to release the striker is too much travel for the sear to overcome. I suspect the new shallower sear could help with this as you mentioned in your video. I haven't tried removing the trigger stop pin. If allowing the trigger to move further back will increase the vertical travel of the sear, then I bet it would release the striker. There could be some tolerance stackup happening since I'm using an X5 grip module with an RX slide and apex trigger. I'll report back if the sear housing assembly swap fixes this issue. Thanks for this video by the way, it's really helping me narrow down this issue as I've had this pistol just sitting in my safe for 4 years.

    I’m looking at buying the p320 rxp xcompact. I am assuming all of these upgrades have been implemented in the complete line of the 320 family. My question is, are all of the ADs that people are saying from older models or is it a new issue?

    • @SIGMECHANICS
      @SIGMECHANICS  Рік тому +1

      Yes. All upgrades are going to be included in the RXP. The ADs that are being mentioned recently are a newer claim that unlike the drop safety problem, is not something that can be replicated under “lab conditions”. Therefore, I take that with a grain of salt as I also do not believe they are occurring without a trigger pull.
