a lot has been taken out of India (post-independence as well) in terms of music, fashion, dance, culture in general.. we are very diverse, and giving. Yet there's a very less appreciation for India as a whole. We are never in top 100 of international music charts, we are told that our culture is very rich yet there's little to no empathy towards us. We are looked down upon, attacked, framed in so many different levels and ranges.

    • @adityabose26

So well put...there is absolutely no recognition of the contribution from India or Indians. Any successful inventor or CEO of Indian origin suddenly becomes full-blown American even though he might have just gotten there less than 10 years back. And then, some stupid Americans have the gall of asking Indians who have been legally there for more than 20 years (and paying tons of taxes. All Indians have to pay taxes even as students) to go 'back' to India. The hypocrisy is extraordinary & becoming unbearable.

As a Sri Lankan, I agree that Bollywood and Kollywood (as the second largest race in Sri Lanka are Tamils) had a massive influence in us and our music + culture growing up. Although there are obvious overlaps, Sri Lankan traditional music, dance music (like Baila) are homegrown with our distinctive flavours. But yes, we predominately watch Indian movies (some Indian movies often doing bigger numbers in SL than in India haha) as such the influence is apparent.

A lot of Bollywood songs were copied from West too. Sometimes the time between then copy was more than a decade.. Especially in 60s and 70s since technology was not as advanced and there was no internet...
Chura Liya Hai Tumne from Yaadon Ki Baraat (1973) taken from If It’s Tuesday This Must Be Belgium by Walter Scharf (1969)
. Akele Hai To Kya Gam Hai from Qyamat Se Qyamat Tak (1988) taken from Return To The Alamo by The Shadows (1977)
But not always it was due to technology. The music directors like RD Burman were hugely inspired by western music and were avid listenes.... And in 60s and 70s western music was available on LP records etc

    - Kishore Kumar’s first name is pronounced “Key 🔑 Shore 🏖 ” 😅
    - I imagine a lot of the sampling is to do with (1) blue collar Bengali/Sri Lanka/Indian/pakistani immigrant parents living in communities of colours (hoods?) alongside Latin/Black families and youngsters growing up listening/being influenced by this (2) samples from Asia probably didnt get cleared/paid royalties and so less hassle to use. The same Black Eyed Peas song “Don’t Phunk with my Heart” from 10:30 also used audio from the same clip mentioned at 03:45. Listen to the album version and you’ll see…. It opens up with that same clip from that other song. So really, two Bollywood songs were sampled to make that Black Eyed Peas song.

well there are much more, LOADS AND LOADS of sampling/copying in indian music by who not..every renowned music composer did it....from RD BURMAN, PRITAM, VISHAL SHEKHAR, BADSHAH..everyone...🙃but still those are some songs which do make an impact on audience and cant be ignored...KISHORE DA did have western/ rather Hispanic influence in his singing which was really new, unknown to us earlier and we used to like it..KUMAR SANU also shared an incident where his child in US was listening to one of his songs and her friends told that these songs sound familiar to some US songs😂😂...but now there is a bit less sampling than earlier
