Really appreciated the honesty, integrity and intelligence from mr. Fretz. I subscribed knowing I’m a non sailer but with a real curiosity and desire to sail (shore cruising) for minor cruising in my retirement. I will not be in the budget arena mentioned, but a 20-30 foot trailerable multi is so far in my sight. I’ll occasionally visit this sight for the little jewels imparted.
Talk about generalization. Best boat, is one that suits your wants and needs. Personally I would want a performance cat and less volume for less junk. A performance cat like an Outremer has many advantages of being stronger and faster, especially in light winds, so less motoring.
Gary knows his market I've heard his comments on other channels. Nice of him to share. Nikki and Jason on Gone w/wynns did just about what he said to do , bought a leopard, in summer, owner version never chartered! They still spent a ton on upgrades and prepping for Long we liveaboard. Gary pointed out that basically you will not get the " old" advantages of a multi hull with one of these cruising caravan type. They won't be giving you fast passages or be much good when you have to pound to windward for a couple of days. You will probably spend more time motoring than you really should. But the room will suck you in. So if your not looking for a real sailing experience and just a cruising experience they will be great and the level platform will be really nice in the long run! Cheers Warren.
warp21drive I have no interest in a cat. The only car I have ever owned is a Mini Cooper. It seems too much like a McMansion or SUV to me, but I know lots of folks are interested in Cats. I also like our current boat and want to continue Sailing west in it.
whats the difference between a charter and owner version...usually its the hours on engine and one hull is for the owner, the other hull has 2 duouble beds...that conversion can be easily made with any charter cat - given you dont have two left hands...
Great video, very informative. You have answered quite a bit of the queries I've had and been unable to find answers to. Definitely subscribing and watching more videos!
Great video and tips!! Hey Gary What do you think about buying new or used boat ? I like leopards and lagoon but i do not know if its worth it buying these boat new.
Hi Gary talking Lagoon vs Leopard 40 - 45 foot, 5 - 10 years old. Im struggeling to find data on headroom. Im 200 cm tall and so far only fond L400 to be an option. Any other recomendations?
This was very helpful Thank you I thought it was the opposite I thought it would be cheaper in the fall and winter Well that changes my plans I’m still look of course but man that was a blow lol🥴
What do you suggest for a smaller weekend catamaran that wouldn’t be a live aboard? Something to entertain on in the inter coastal of Florida in St Augustine?
Eric - when you find out - let me know. I know that Privilege is a "luxury" cat -- but they also seem to be devoted to interior space hacks, and I'm interested in where the budget verses luxury blend meets!
Ferulloscoasting ! Probably cuz it was originally an Australian build and relatively new to the US market compared to the three big production cats he mentioned - there’s just not near as many Seawinds in the US as in Aus
THANK YOU !! THANK YOU !! THANK YOU!! I will contact you ...when I want a boat!!! And Im thinkin 2-3 yrs at latest. About the exact same parameters as your example customer. Thank you for this video!!
Leopard may produce the best built of the big three production builders, but the big three in no way account for the best built catamarans. They may produce the best aesthetics depending on what a buyer is looking for. But these three mass producers do not have a single model among them that makes the top ten list of best built catamarans. Gary seems to brush off all other producers in four words. "There are other producers". And I'm sure he makes 90 percent of his commissions selling from the big three's fleet. What he sells are not the best built.
Michy Nature. Michy, I have studied cats for a few years, but still consider my opinion to be at an a mature level. If my memory serves me I recall Sunreef being a custom producer of large cats in Poland. I’ve never been on a Sunreef boat, but my impression is that they build high end, luxury cats that would be wonderful to sail on or live on. They are certainly out of my range price wise. I think I’d prefer a smaller boat that could be single handed in the mid-forty foot range. For me a smaller boat gives me a more acute connection to the environment around me. In motorcycle terms, Harleys are for show and BMW’s are for go. I’m more concerned with feeling a connection to the road than being seen in it.
Lagoons...good boats...but they fall apart...how special. No thanks...will stick with my rock solid mono-hull with solid woods and materials that will still be around decades from now. The acceptance of "IKEA" boats is sad testimony to the level to which crap has become acceptable. However, his practical business savvy is well noted.
Each to their own I guess - plenty of Lagoons traversed the globe but point taken re modern corner cutting on quality materials. But look at Mercedes et al - built in obsolescence rules. Fair winds.

We have no plans to buy a catamaran:)
i love this guy. at first, he looks and talks like a used car salesman but after it's all over you got taught a lot!

Great video! I know who I’ll be reaching out to when we look to buy!

Slow Boat Sailing I didn't think you were interested in a cat but it's an interesting discussion. You. Defiantly pay for all that extra space. W
I like Gary too and there are more videos planned with him in the coming weeks.
Lagoon hey. What about the Lagoon 450?? Hows the bulkheads these days?
Thanks Gary
Very informative and valuable advice
whats the difference between a charter and owner version...usually its the hours on engine and one hull is for the owner, the other hull has 2 duouble beds...that conversion can be easily made with any charter cat - given you dont have two left hands...
Not so easy, the owners version usually has a much expanded en-suite bath located in either bow or stern that’s as nice as any luxury condo.
There are also differences in how they are built. Charter boats have glued in bulk heads where as owner version boats are glassed in.
Not what I expected, but good information from someone who appears to really know what they are doing.
Enjoyed hearing what this guy had to say.

Really great advice thank you for sharing your wealth of knowledge
Michael DeNicola we have another video with Gary coming out next week!
Wow, great information. Thanks Gary!
This was very helpful
Thank you
I thought it was the opposite
I thought it would be cheaper in the fall and winter
Well that changes my plans
I’m still look of course but man that was a blow lol🥴
That new Leopard 50 looks to be a great cat. I always thought the L48 & 45 was the best bang for the buck at that price point.
If only Roger, Lenny and Randy style eh, I'm afraid my budget is about a 42 lagoon but hey ill be out there anyway
Leopard cats are pretty darn good.
very informative video, thank you very much sir.
Seems we are getting a lot of traffic from your channel! Thank you very much! Great info BTW!
Funny that I kept thinking of you two cruising in your Leopard 45 as I listened to him.
Guess that’s my envy showing 🤭
Go and look at the Exquisite X5... Galley drawers alone are amazing
Price is amazing too!
Good points. I like the lagoon 52s, the new leopard 50L and Majestic 530
I agree as I plan to move from house to live aboard in 2020 - 2022
are there any charter company's that will take older cats
What do you suggest for a smaller weekend catamaran that wouldn’t be a live aboard? Something to entertain on in the inter coastal of Florida in St Augustine?
c 60 ocean explorer .. I think it's the best .
Curious about Privilege.
How does it stack up against the Leopards and the Lagoons?
Eric - when you find out - let me know. I know that Privilege is a "luxury" cat -- but they also seem to be devoted to interior space hacks, and I'm interested in where the budget verses luxury blend meets!
Yeah - but who would buy a lagoon now?
Thanks for your honestly.
after thousand video says about speed and this man talk about reality SRR should see this video
Nice!
Crazy he didnt mention seawind
Ferulloscoasting ! Probably cuz it was originally an Australian build and relatively new to the US market compared to the three big production cats he mentioned - there’s just not near as many Seawinds in the US as in Aus
Thank you for your perspective.

What financier did he say to avoid?

Mark Ross where would you place Sunreef?

SailnBlue Absolutely. There is never an issue with wood at sea.
Each to their own I guess - plenty of Lagoons traversed the globe but point taken re modern corner cutting on quality materials. But look at Mercedes et al - built in obsolescence rules. Fair winds.
With a big lead weight that will drag you to the bottom if you hole your boat?
I want to be a Yacht Broker, I was I’ll be a yacht broker, I am a yacht broker! I sell fun pleasure and luxury
Remember. This is just an opinion from a guy making his money doing this… He could be biased, right?
