    There are many "cruiser" channels out there that can't sail to save their life.
    I have a lot of respect for your approach to be sailors first.
    And also a huge fan of your restoration work content.

    I've been sailing since I was 9 years old (for 65 years now!) and when I sail my current boat, a Beneteau 373 which I've had for 19 years I do exactly what you do when we get underway. You did an excellent job of describing it. Really enjoy your channel.

    I have watched every single episode. I wouldn’t want you to do this every time, but as somebody who used to sail Sunfish sailboats and knew what worked but not why I absolutely appreciate this type of video. Whether you are repairing something or sailing please don’t just tell us what you are doing but the why. You both have a “teachers” mind and are great at explaining things so anyone can understand. Can’t wait for your next adventure. I always learn something and for that I am eternally grateful. You all are doing what I would have done 40 years ago had I known it could be done. ( of course back then it was a lot harder to earn a buck while traveling). Keep it up, you three are awesome!

    Nice job explaining apparent wind, telltales and getting the boat sailing, in a simple commentary. It's pretty easy to get lost in the physics of it all, and probably not interesting except to nerds like me, LOL. I'm also glad to see your sheeet attachment to the clew at the highest position, meaning the most tension on the jib leech. I see SO many of these roller furlers with a leech that is too loose, (= slow) and the sails look terrible at anything but hard on the wind. Most of them really need a barber hauler when let out on a broad reach or run, to maintain leech tension. A good leech = better speed.

    Do you have a jib barberhauler system on the boat? We have a Dragonfly 32 trimaran and we are using our jib barberhauler as soon as we start to bear away from a close reach through a broad reach. It’s the only way to get all the telltales flying top to bottom on the luff of the sail and not have too much twist in the leech. It’s also good for the health of the sail as you don’t get the floppy leech thing that can lead to premature wear and tear on the sail.
    Nice boat!

    • @craigmargetts3186
      @craigmargetts3186 5 місяців тому

      First up, you can’t measure true wind - only apparent wind - and the system estimates the true wind provided you’ve got your instruments calibrated and your log in measuring speed through the water).
      Secondly, and most importantly, Apparent wind is important as that’s what the sails feel. And they give drive based on what they feel and you have to trim the sails to what they’re feeling. They don’t know/care what the true wind is doing so a good sailor spends 99% of the time looking at apparent wind speed and speed wind angle (and 1% of the time looking at what the instruments say that weather is doing to the wind - which you can tell by looking at the sea state anyway)

Can a 64 year young female (no pronouns here), who has been sailing from the age 7 to now (with 20 + Racing trophies under her belt), sail this Cat solo with my dear friend (a dog)? I love mono-hauls, but I do not like how the stairs are short and step. My 🐕 can not use them. This video is perfect for newbies and even old salty dogs. Your response is important to me. I thought this was a nice mix of planning, sailing, and instruction. Given that you had a long "close reach" section that was cut, maybe include a little of that with the sailing tweaks about tuning the boat / rig, including wind speed vs boat speed, so there would be a little more of a sailing tutorial. I'm enjoying the videos.
