  • We're Traveling by Bike for ONE YEAR.
    Episode 6: "About the Journey".
We have reached previously unseen territory - neither of us have been to the Baltic countries before. We find ourselves in search of that deeper emotional connection we first experienced in Sweden.
The flow we settled into during our time in Finland is still driving us forward - at a pace that might be higher than necessary, maybe we'll have to change things up again.

"Straightest gravel road" must be ex-railway track. In USSR times there were railway from Tallinn to Paernu to Riga in Latvia. They still have existing railway Tallinn to Valga/Valka to Riga, but are in process of building EU gauge railway from Tallinn to Riga approximately where old tracks were, and then go through Lithuania to Poland.

Interesting. I think you’re right - we did actually look for leftovers from a decommissioned railroad or something like that - didn’t see anything that could indicate what it used to be. Of course many years have passed.

I rode 50 km railroad track, to Haapsalu, i can most definitely recommend it! It starts at Turba train stop, and is flat gravel all the way!!😊

@@BikerDudeLebowski That sounds great - we're going to try that when we go back to Estonia - thanks 👍

Nice content. I'm going on a bicycle trip along a similar route starting in August. Once you've figured out why Estonians appeared to be perceived as reserved, please let us know. :)

      Hi Max,
Thanks - we’re glad you like it 🫶🏼
Nice - that’s going to be a great adventure - are you going to ride in Poland as well? Episode 7-8-9 is going to be about Poland and (spoiler alert) it’s pretty awesome. Episode 7 should be out next week.
We did, to some degree, find out why they seemed reserved - we met quite a few Estonians in Vietnam - and we’re actually still friends with some of them now. We talked about our experience - they weren’t exactly choked to hear about our experience.
It’s partly a culture thing - they are on average definitely harder to chat up than a lot of other cultures- actually somewhat similar to Denmark - but once you get to know people they are great and very kind.
Had we stayed longer than 3 days in Estonia, we would probably have eventually met up with some people.

We are indeed riding through Poland (From the border to Warsaw and from Krakow to the Slovakian border) but we have decided to skip the split between Warsaw and Krakow because time is limited and we thought there would not be much interesting to see anyway. But we are most excited about the Tatra Mountains in Slovakia - Budapest - Kroatia and down the coast, before we have to head back home when Semester starts.
Anyways our plans are not yet carved in stone and maybe your insights will change our minds about Poland.
      Really looking forward. :)

Sounds like a great plan - there’s a lot of overlap between our route and the one you describe.
Slovakia was one of our favourite places on the trip - it’s really beautiful.
We planned to take a train between Warsaw and Krakow as well, but ended up riding a pretty cool trail some of the way - episode 8 is going to be about that.

Great videos! Unique style! Easy to digest. We do tour cycling as well, but usually for 10-11 days, also around the region: Sweden, Finland, islands in between. I am Lithuanian and live n Estonia for more than 7 years. And I can tell you that I did not figure out them yet either. We, from the Baltics may seem similar bet also very different on number of aspects. For Estonia and particularly Estonians you need time, but that does not guarantee a chat either 🙂

Going to the Baltics for the first time we expected the 3 countries to be somewhat clones of each other - I agree with you though, all 3 countries are very different and each has their own unique culture.
We really enjoy our time in the region.
We actually met a few very kind and open Estonians later on the trip - and we’re still friends with some of them. 😃
I hope you figure them out someday 😊
