- In this episode we are going to answer the question, can your chicken coop double as a safe house?
Hi - We are Douglas and Keri! In May of 2022 we quit our jobs and sold our home in Denver, Colorado to move to our 36 acre off grid homestead property in Cochise County, Arizona. Follow along with us as we build our homestead from scratch!
We're getting very close to finishing our chicken coop. Doug has spent some time the last week adding lime plaster embellishments over all the exterior window openings to act as a drip edge (because we forgot to add drip edge during the build!). We also decided if there is ever a brush fire that comes through, it's the perfect spot for all the animals and us to stay safe.
We installed a nice heavy duty door with a latch that can be secured from the inside or the outside. We built it ourselves because the doors they sell in the hardware stores just didn't seem to match with the theme we had in mind. Chicken coop hell, that's a chicken mansion! I would be moving in there and the chickens could have the camper! I've wanted to build a round house for a long time.

Love the relief pattern in the plaster around the chicken door and the sturdy doors and shutters -----No-one has ever convInced me to avoid discussing politics and religion --theyre a daily part of our lives...interesting ,revealing and sometimes fun--or funny. You are very right about that and as much as I don't "enjoy" politics, we are foolish if we try to ignore things going on and we believe it's important to be as involved as you can stand. As much as we want to pretend it's not happening, it doesn't work that way. I believe it's very important to stay informed so you don't get blindsided. I feel like a lot of people have been sleeping through a lot of important issues that we, collectively as a world population, should be aware of. Hey Doug- I just want to support you on your stand, God does ask that we share him, and if you have a platform to do as such, then it is your Soap Box. It is easy to kick the Soap Box out from under you on You-Tube, just a click of a mouse if you do not like what they are doing. Final plaster? I think the cross hatching on this coat looks good with the relief work. It would be a unique look compared to the typical smooth finish, but maybe water would pool in the crevices??
is an interesting idea!
There will be one more coating that will be the final "smooth" coat. Then we will be applying a waterproofing tinted lime wash to tone down the brightness of it.
@@tworebelsoffgrid So I helped on this build on Easy Street other side of Bisbee, but he colored his cement plaster with this Copperish stuff, which I can not seem to find, but looked real interesting. He sead it was a product of Hi-Yeld But I could not find any.

A Stargate, how coolis that, is it operational ? Years ago when I was in ROTC in Collage in Colo, we got to go on a tour of Chyanne Mountain in Colo Springs. Was very interesting but despite my begging they would not take us down to the level where the Stargate Was ;-)

Would You Tube allow such? Safety involves 2 things my Dad always told me, 1- Always treat a weapon as if it is loaded. and 2-Never point a weapon at someone unless you intend to kill that person. KISS ;-)

Doug said "thank you". We love you too! Yes, we will definitely use this as a safe house for us and the animals if ever needed. We have smoke masks and fire blankets for us and the animals and water too. We had a few times over the last year where we were on alert to evacuate for a nearby brush fire and realized this is pretty important. We don't have the equipment (trucks/trailers) to be able to get the animals out safely, so sheltering in place makes more sense if we can do it safely. We always love your comments and value your real homesteading knowledge! Merry Christmas Eve!!
