I'm Australian, if the government straight up asked every single one of us whether we should just let our desperately poor neighbour have all that oil and gas that's closer to their shore anyway, I reckon 95% would say yes. The problem is the people who donate pretty much all the money to the big political companies wanted this so here we are: using Australian intelligence assets to nefariously obtain an advantage and deploying hyper aggressive negotiation tactics to extort of one of the poorest countries in the world to make a small segment of the resources sector slightly wealthier.

you forgot to mention how, when Timor-leste took Australia to court at the Hague, the Australians raided the homes of a classified witness who ran the wiretapping operation and his lawyer, essentially ensuring that Timor-leste's case would go nowhere. Australia is now continuing on this trajectory of stepping all over it's citizen's rights, especially in recent times. Australia was created as a prison state and will very likely die as one.
..australia doesn't tramp over its peoples rights, only that of asylum seekers
Timor-Leste as a country and its people owe Australia a great debt for how heavily we intervened in the Indonesian genocide of the region which is conveniently left out of this video. Without Australian intervention and Australian diplomats bringing the ethnic cleansing occurring in Timor Leste to the world stage, Timor Leste and its people probably wouldn’t exist. To imply that Australia and Australians are nothing but criminals and villains in the story of Timor Leste is both insulting and untrue.

Not sure if E Timor would be better off as a province of Indonesia than being independent. The country that over-relied on oil and became bankrupt is Venezuela. Government officials are too shortsighted to see that the oil boom would last forever and relied on just 1 industry to provide jobs.
There must be other resources the country can tap into or build new industries like manufacturing when the oil boom is going to provide jobs after the oil price collapsed. A country like Japan with no oil has enough brains to dominate the car & electronics industries after the war.

This documentary forgot to add USA as the country who gave incentives to Timor Leste to gain independence despite the very undeveloped nature of the country.
And for those who are wondering why Indonesian oppressed the Timor Leste people: it was the time when Soeharto was the president, elected through nepotism, and is one of the worst dictator in history. So it wasn't just Timor Leste, but the whole country that were oppressed by the military.
And soeharto was endorsed and supported by western power.
@@harukrentz435 true. Soekarno, the previous president, was in close relationship with the Soviet Union. Obviously the USA didn't like it. I had never heard of any of this, thanks for the info. Well done.
as indonesian, i apluad bj habibie of allowing timor to separate from us.
why?
1. its not even core territory of indonesia
2. poor with resources, bussiness or even location.
3. bassicaly no benefit whatsoever, in fact, the Soeharto regime pour insane investment to timor in attempt to integrate it.
edit:
4. also the infrastructure need to be burn pretty much entirely becuz indonesia build it for vain. we indonesia dont want to burden timor with infrastructure we left there. so thats why indonesia burn significant amount of infrastructure.
I’m going to level with you, burning infrastructure seems more like spite and hindering them, rather than saving them from burden. Would’ve helped to have that.
That being said, along East Timor to be separate has allowed relations to improve again. Could this also work for Papua?
@@iamthinking2252_ 1. Spite ofc one of it. But won't it be ironic if tmor leste advanced by the help of Indonesian built infrastructure? So we indonesia kindly helped them a fresh start by removing the infrastructure.
2. Maybe, or maybe not. Although Indonesian, i can't guarantee whether or not IF Indonesia let west papua go is best idea for WP or not. I don't think it is what papua wanted but outsiders may think it is. WP is a core Indonesian territory enough of a reason not to let them go.
Indonesia also currently try to boost infrastructure and economy of the area.
But on the other hand the separatist doesn't want the development of WP.
Why ?
A content well fed and prosper people is harder to be incorporated to a violent rebellion. Thats why they shot worker, burn school infrastructure and take out internet development from the are.

Yeah China is the only solution
2:00 "There's just One Tiny Problem... Sponsored by CuriosityStream & Nebula" didn't know they interfered in Australasian politics
And Australia is trying to do the same with West Papua. As an Indonesian, I can't deny that Indonesia has done lots of horrible things in West Papua, but since the Indonesian government managed to get 51% of Freeport's profit for them, the numbers of Australian SJWs "advocating" for West Papua has curiously risen. Things are improving in West Papua, yet they always "advocate" for "better West Papua".
People in Australia hear in the news about the situation in West Papua and get angry, the *people* aren't the ones with the agenda.
Then again, you're Indonesian, so you hear about how things in West Papua are "improving" and how Australians only care because of a mining company we've never heard of.
The conclusion? Maybe we get fed the info we do because of our country's economic interests *and* you get fed the info you do because of *your* countries political interests? I still think West Papua should be free tbh, but maybe that's just the brainwashing. Who really knows?
@@lorddashdonalddappington2653 the one who "really knows" would be the West Papuans. Neither Indonesians, Australians, Tuvaluans, etc. can decide for them.
Thing is, it's as difficult there as it is anywhere else. OPM clearly has vested interests to become "free"; obviously looking to seat in its Western-backed government. But so does its current local government that's supported by Indonesia.
It's horrible what the corrupt did to them, but only relying on "mmuh human rights" argument has shown that they'll just become the next Timor Leste. Their own people need to learn, grow, and decide as a whole.
@@lorddashdonalddappington2653 A visit to west papua will tell you that the country will descend to chaos and lives would go really bad if they go free now. West Papua is not a monolith. There are hundreds of tribes there. The country will descend to a civil war no doubt if they go free now. It's improving there now because it really is improving. President Joko Widodo are developing the entire country, that includes West Papua. This is why he's very popular in West Papua. The first Indonesia president to really care about Papuans. Massive development going on there, and it's happening in the entire country. Should be a surprise to you, because international media never cared about the development in West Papua under President Joko Widodo, they only ever cared about news of conflict there. Lives are slowly getting better for people in West Papua, they're no longer treated like a colony like during Suharto's dictatorship. The country is changing, we are a democratic country, not a autocracy anymore.
@@lorddashdonalddappington2653 Not really, everything that the government do for the people doesnt have to be solely driven by political interest. Yes there are rats but bit by bit west papua is getting more modern back then there were less roads and night was very dark only few houses have electricity and now there are many roads connecting the region, people have access electricity even some have been supplied with solar panels and many public services are being bulid there some of which that have finish is the PON Stadium at Jayapura outskirts, also many more public housing.
Also it is true that many international media only potrays the bad side of the story. Cause bad news is good news so yeah only us that interacts with the people directly knows whats up cause of course how could you know whats goin on in someone else's house if youre not even in there. Thats why i think the media is the one that heating things up we can take an example such as the start of the spanish american war it started of with an accident but then the media portrays it as an aggression.
Development in Papua maybe lacks a lot, including with the goverment that are corrupt etc etc, but you know someday maybe the government will change to a cleaner one, so better to fix a broken arm than to amputate it.
Maybe we could send you all of our SJWs? Seems like a win-win solution.
