This was one of the songs that has helped me through the sudden loss of my son in 2009 from a car crash. Nothing before or since has so thoroughly crushed me. I have since grown closer to God, and have accepted Christ as my savior. Though the struggle continues.
I share a very similar story. I climbed in the bottle but always gravitated towards this song from youth. Almost instructions to find Christ in our darkness
I remember back in 1995-96 i was going through some hard times while stationed at Ft Bragg, NC as a trooper in the duece, and this song was popular, I was depressed, oppressed going through a separation, confused and knowing it was not the will of God that I stayed in the military. When i hear this song It reminds me of how Jesus was there with me, 20 years later and I still remember those times like it was yesterday, this song always lifts me up
As a non Christian, I still love this song. Interesting melody line, VERY intetresting guitar tuning, and great memories of the mid 90s, a time when VH-1 still played music. This is just great from beginning to end.
This is an official Classic. Jars of Clay to this day is one of my favorite bands. This song is a prayer, if much people didn't realize, asking God to lift us up and keep us from drowning.

I just love this song I remember when I first got save listen to the song ID loved it then and I still love it now jars of clay I just such a beautiful band
I had a girlfriend that begged me to get this on CD the day it was released. So I did. After she actually read the lyrics, she went ballistic. She was a wiccan and really got upset at the thought of liking this song. We parted soon after that. I love this song and I'm not a christian. In fact, I'm going to learn this song with my grandson for us to play together.

I hope you are doing well Nathan. It's hard for some who do time to get back into the swing of things on the outside. Keep looking to Christ, good Christian friends, and say no to evil influences. I just prayed for you.
These lyrics are exactly how I feel right now. I'm going through something bad and my heart is breaking. It's comforting that the person who wrote the song knows how I feel!!
What a great memory, Thearmsman! I heard it for the first time only recently. I missed out on a lot of the music of the 90's due to the arrival of my little bundle of joy...all we watched or listened to was Barney, Sesame Street or Disney vids, lol. When my daughter took naps, I tuned into classical music. So when I heard this song recently, it sounded completely fresh and new. It's still a message we all can relate to, Amen? God bless!
This is one of my favorite songs by a Christian band. It helps remind me that no matter what problems are happening in my life the Lord Jesus Christ will be there for me. With faith he can help me to overcome anything. Matthew 17:20 - "Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.”
You're welcome, Michelle. It's a privilege to pray for my family in Christ! I'm glad you're feeling better. God bless you and yours as we remember and celebrate Jesus's birth. Glory to God in the highest; peace on earth, goodwill to all.
I recently 're-discovered' this song and subsequently the huge, stunning, joyous body of work by Jars of Clay. Can't believe I missed them in the early years. Added Bucket List item: See Jars of Clay live!!
What a fantastic song! The Lord hears the cry of the poor. Blessed be the Lord. I almost drowned when I was a kid and am grateful to be alive. This song was meaningful when I heard it years ago and I was delighted to find this video recently. The images go with the lyrics very well. Please release a digitally remastered version. God bless you and thank you for your song.
Love this band...I remember buying this cd back in 2000 i think...lost it in a house fire recently...thank God for UA-cam and Pandora!! love both sites for my listening pleasure!
I've never seen the video....just heard the music. I love hard rock and deep meanings in music. I was in a dark place back then and felt like I was indeed "drowning" like the song says. Just then... JC pushed me to tune to the Christian Rock station one day... and I never left. Jars of Clay brought me peace and turned me on to Christian Rock. continues as one of the Best songs in my music Library. thank you....
Loved this song since I heard it & I had to hear the whole album...then I fell in love the band & their music & wished they were at my church & then I would go every sunday. But anyway this whole album is very very good to praise Jesus with & that's why I love it. It inspire to thank God for all Hes done for me. Ty 6-6-20

@David No they're not
@David They are a Christian band. How are they not a Christian band. Because they say they support gays? So do most churches.
@David The bible says nothing about homosexuality except for Paul, and Paul is a heretic.

It's the meditation i need now
Certified hood classic!
It was misunderstood when it first hit the airwaves. The lyrics didn’t add up at first.
God is everything we need. He lifts us up when we are falling. lifts us up and keep us from drowning again. Powerful lyrics

The first Christian group to go platinum with their first album! And got the secular world to notice as well!
This song has seen me through many days of depression. Thank you, Jars of Clay. It is like they are my words.

Nathan Fish no member of JOC was in prison or jail
He probably meant one of the JOC members was doing prison ministry at the time.

Rain rain on my face
It hasn't stopped
Raining for days
My world is a flood
Slowly I become
One with the mud
But if I can't swim after 40 days
And my mind is crushed
By the crashing waves
Lift me up so high
That I cannot fall
Lift me up
Lift me up when I'm falling
Lift me up I'm weak and I'm dying
Lift me up I need you to hold me
Lift me up and keep me from drowning again
Down pour on my soul
Splashing in the ocean
I'm losing control
Dark sky all around
Can't feel my feet
Touching the ground
But if I can't swim after 40 days
And my mind is crushed
By the crashing waves
Lift me up so high
That I cannot fall
Lift me up
Lift me up when I'm falling
Lift me up I'm weak and I'm dying
Lift me up I need you to hold me
Lift me up and keep me from drowning again
Calm the storms that drench my eyes
And dry the streams still flowing
Casting down all waves of sin
And guilt that overthrow me
But if I can't swim after 40 days
And my mind is crushed
By the crashing waves
Lift me up so high
That I cannot fall
Lift me up
Lift me up when I'm falling
Lift me up I'm weak and I'm dying
Lift me up I need you to hold me
Lift me up and keep me from drowning again
Lift me up, when I'm falling
Lift me up, I'm weak and I'm dying
Lift me up, I need you to hold me
Lift me up, and keep me from drowning again
