+Pickle Barrel - I was thinking the same thing as I watched this. The slow, over-scripted, over-emphasized speaking pattern that all of today's wrestlers seem to have is enough to put me to sleep. And while today's heavily choreographed matches can be entertaining, I don't think anyone would ever buy them as being legitimate brawls.
Today's wrestlers wax and tan like they're going to the prom.....look at Mantell, or George Steele.....back hair you could make wigs out of and pale as an Alaskan winter.....they looked more real as well compared to these Ken-dolls with no off-the-cuff mic skills and over-rehearsed matches

T.M.M.: That was ingenious! Mr. Russell might or might not be in The Top Three ever. As the saying goes though it doesn't take long to call the roll. And then there's the absolute fact that in his incredible career he put over more people than rain tarp!😂 Was he ever asked to do Memphis Tiger Games? @@justinleblanc1883Mid South is amazing..It was my territory growing up in the early and mid 80s in Oklahoma City. My dad was a state senator, and he knew Bill Watts and would get me backstage from time to time when they came to the Myriad. I have photos of me with hacksaw Butch Reed, Jim Duggan, and Dennis Condrey with Bobby Eaton..Was amazing, they of course remained in character the entire time..
I grew up watching Mid-South/UWF. I would see clips of Memphis Wrestling though music videos for Rock n Roll Express and others. No crowd popped like Memphis back in the day. Dallas and World Class had some great crowds too. But Memphis had the best crowd reactions to me.👍
Anytime old school southern wrasslin’ is showcased, I love it! From the standpoint of storytelling, nothing has or ever will touch it! Mantell was an outstanding performer, but also a guiding hand for many professional wrestlers.
I think there was like 2 actually wrestling moves and a whole bunch of strikes..the psychology was great but it work for guys who look out of shape. Not saying you have to do every move but and body slam would've been nice.. But I guess in order to make it look real you cant be to fancy
This man has been one of the most underrated people on the mic ever in wrestling. I've followed Dutch Mantell for years and watching him be Swagger's mouthpiece reminds me of the old-school managers. We need more guys like Dirty Dutch Mantell.
@@jamescoleman446He's one of the most respected wrestlers and bookers of the 80s..He taught so many from the Undertaker, Steve Austin, Godfather, AJ Styles, and the list goes on. He was a major player in Memphis during it's height of popularity..
It's easy to see why Dutch had such a big influence on Stone Cold ...... What a worker, great ring psychology and he and Lawler had great chemistry. Back in the age of TV Squash Matches (I grew up in AWA country) this was pretty innovative and really quite smart. I'd definitely be more likely to see a live show of a rematch than if they had showed each guy in the usual squash match .... Lawler was pretty smart about that as the Andy Kaufman stuffed proved.
Kudos to Lawler and Jarrett! No fancy production or presentation. Bloodstained mats, crappy looking ropes, and barely any padding on the turnbuckles. Great, creative angles; too! My condolences to the Jarrett family. Wish you a speedy recovery Jerry!
I like how straightforward and real this comes across. Just straightforward promos and wrestling action without the fanfare and the whole "clown show" aspect. I wish I could have experienced this as it happened.
I've known Dutch since working for nick Gulas in 1978 - great pro - worked for everybody in the biz from booker to producer to mgr to wrestler- even worked for me when I ran spot shows!!! No scripted promos here!!!
This midwesterners wishes in a big way that there was way to watch Memphis wrestling chronologically from 1977 or so all the way to the end. Just another great example of how adept our combatants were at keeping things interesting. THANK YOU
Best 15 minutes of wrestling ive seen this year. It had a great story and i didnt see the double cross coming. Whats wrong with the wrestling telling the story?
Excellent sell-job when Lawler hits the post at 14:11 - I wish more of the vintage Memphis stuff was still available (a lot of it was apparently taped over) but what I've seen is outstanding.
Wow, this was entertaining from start to finish. Dutch got real heat, everyone involved presented it as a legitimate bout, and without spoiling anything, things took some unexpected turns. That was great. Now I am left with this question: Why can't wrestling today be presented as serious with good storylines, good, characters, and good angles? Now days it's all about getting your shit in and all these winks at the camera. RIP Kayfabe. We know it's a work, but the product should be presented as serious. You don't see characters in movies going off script, ranting about what happened with actors backstage, talking about star ratings and how much camera time they have.
this was when wrestling was great...much better then what they are passing off as wrestling today and Jerry and Dutch were really two of the best in the country
"There's no need getting in the ring beating somebody you've beaten before". You can take that straight to the bank because that's what wrestling these days needs to take note of.
Instead of "The King" wearing a Crown after this particular match, he should've been wearing a dunce cap! I can't believe that Jerry was stupid enough to stop and talk to Dutch, after Dutch called him over to talk, which, of course, caused Jerry to let his guard down. This was another excellent angle that this particular Wrestling Organization was well-known for. I give this segment a perfect 10 out of 10 rating!!!
The difference between then and now- younger fans today don’t know what they missed.. This match and the entire sport 30-40 years ago was the real deal. Today, too many acrobatic spots, too many finishing moves not sold anymore…no real stories being told.
Dutch takes the belt with him , even though the referee wasn't around to count the 3. Funny thing is 2 nights later at the Mid South Coliseum, they wrestled each other in a barbed wire match for the Southern belt, where Dutch entered with the belt AND was intorduced as the champion. Lawler won the belt back.
Young wrestlers take heed, find the opponents flaws, attack those flaws, no matter how big or small, then time and place your statement. Promo 101 . Notice the abdominal stretch was just a move, not a finisher. Also notice, no DQ with a chair shot, foreign object. Lawler sold everything stiff but he sold, Dutch sold, almost ziggler style. Really a stand out match concept. But you could tell the respect for each other was there. In closing, Dutch is gonna kill you. WM31
Why people still watch WWE is beyond me. It's not wrestling anymore. It's flashy bs. In WWE especially in the woman's division, how do you get hit with a chair 5 times and still get up?
This was real as it ever gonna be miss watching this on Saturday morning wrestling will never be as good as it was when we was growing up rip to 80s wrestling.😮
This is why wrestling then is better than wrestling now These days it looks too polished. Its more like a choreographed dance than a fight. A fight isnt suppose to look pretty. I mean unless ur sugar ray leonard or somebody
This video is a MASTERCLASS of both cutting a promo, and the 80s era style of wrestling. Absolutely magnificent.
comparing this to current wrestling, no wonder people thought it was a shoot back then. so much more believable

+Chet Lemon - The crowd is also fantastic. Adds so much to the match.

I agree with Chet Lemon. The crowd adds to the match. They were great, rivals Jim Crockett Promotions. Even though their smaller.

The greatest thing about this is that this was a typical Saturday morning in Memphis.
More like in the South.

Fun Fact: Both Dutch Mantell And Jerry Lawler Were born on the same day in the same year.
Dutch was one of my alltime favorites and much respect as he is also a Vietnam veteran
Lmao he’s some creepi old racist from southern murica 🤦🏻🤣
Being forced to burn children alive as a young man makes him better?

The small, simple details made wrestling in this time extraordinary
This is so much better than 90% of todays AEW or WWE
I’d say a 100%
100%
This is how you cut a believable promo. Current WWE should take this guy and have him teaching their roster how to talk.
These guys knew how to throw punches. Wrestlers today need to study tapes to make their shit look real
