  • I head off on a 370 mile ride from Ipswich on the east coast of England, to Cornwall on the west, on the Harley Davidson Sport Glide.
I stop off for lunch at the biker cafe of Flatout Cafe, Hove.
The bike: 2023 Harley Davidson Sport Glide.

I was surprised to discover about how deep biking culture is in the UK.
When I moved from Italy to Scotland I would've never imagined that basically everyone around me would be a biker. Yesterday I discovered the baker that is baking our wedding cake is an ex Harley rider and we started a conversation. The random gentlemen walking his dog around the neighborhood? Long time biker that offered to keep my bike in his garage when I had to go back to Italy so as not to left it in the garden.
My friendly neighborhood that basically adopted us and comes to the rescue anytime we need something? Old school biker that helped me learn the figure of 8s like no instructor could.
A random 80 years old lady outside of Lidl? You bet your ass...A BIKER!
It's amazing how deeply woven motorcycle culture is here in the UK and how, so much so that it's invisible, it's not "showy" like you'd see in other countries.

Davide , I think you missed something.
Uk is NOT a motorcycle country. This is for many reasons.
      Regulations, weather, mentality .
In Britain you ride a bike mainly for traveling, is a functional mean.
Italians ride a bike to show up at the coffee bar in the central square of the historical city nearby you.
      It’s a point of view.
I would say Britain is more an aviation oriented country.

The roads down there were amazing. lovely twists and rewarding destinations. The A306 Got a good heavy blast all the way down!
Tents on the back and no set plans. Torquay Dartmoor, Tintadgel, Newquay , Penzance and back.
Spent the last night back at a hidden spot in Dartmoor that we passed at the beginning of the journey. Bikes either side of the camp, cigars lit, watching shooting stars.

I once got scammed in a supermarket car park, two young women said they had run out of petrol! I gave them a £5, enough to ease my mind if they were genuine but not so much if they were liars (I suspect the latter). Always over-looked the Sport Glide as a bit pedestrian in the looks department but now watching you ride one I can see how beautiful it is. I ride a 107 Low Rider, the engine is a joy as you highlighted. Thanks

107 Low Rider has much nicer looking wheels. Add some panniers and you're good. The Low Rider 107 is a great bike on the used market, but I'd say that even those have crept up in price in the last couple of years.

Fifteen years later, I clearly got used to it and I bought my first bike in the UK. And now I ride my Sport Glide every time I can!!!! Good bike culture here. Do f have all of those cool eating places, unfortunately.
But weather always warm. Good roads, plenty of scenery.
    Ride safe.

I own the Roeg Chase in that great vintage white colour. Had a look at a lot of retro style helmets and personally feel that this one is the closest to that vintage Bell star from the 70s and 80s that looks so cool. Love the Roeg.

Freddie, keep your eyes out for the Urban Rider (London) sales. I've no affiliation, but i picked up an open an full face Roeg helmet at enticing discounts. Of course, other sales outlets may be offering the same, so just a heads up.

Good video and love the scenery. Not sure I'm as enthusiastic about a Harley and that thumping v twin. I had a 1800 boulevard that I bought brand new, half the price if a Harley, probably more reliable too. Unfortunately the name is what you pay for.
I had a lot of cruisers but must admit I prefer my Goldwing. Still got a Yamaha Bolt and KTM 1290 super Adventure S both v twin bikes. But for touring that 6 cylinder boxer engine in the Goldwing is just unbeatable..

I've looked at this exact bike in grey. I'm already riding a 21 Heritage and I love it (but the spoked wheel has punctured too often)...also the Sports Glide is over 30kg lighter and I'm getting a little older. But I reckon I'll need to sell privately as HD asking for €5,400 to change.
Hate to hear about these Irish travellers ripping people off. They don't try it as much here in Ireland as we know them straight away .

Fuel range is something you don't think about until you begin to travel. Being able to ride all day ( 300 miles is our usual distance) at steady speeds is a godsend, especially in Southern or Eastern Europe where so much shuts on Sundays.
    Good watch.
    Safe, happy travels 👍

Agree. I swapped from a Tenere (getting on for 300 mile range) to an antique Goldwing and now have to stop around 175 miles. Annoying.

Nice One Freddie, like the look of that HD, if your still in Cornwall (23rd July) and fancy taking a look at a bike at the opposite end of the spectrum that I have just spent weeks refurbishing, a CBR400RR that I imported in 1996, feel free to get back and we can meet up over a coffee.

Back in the late 1960s I lived in San Francisco and had a BSA Spitfire Hornet. My best friends had a Harley Sportster, and we used to ride together a lot. He would joke with me and say that I should always ride in front of him because English bikes vibrated in such a way that parts would fall off and he would have to stop and pick them up. I got back at him and said that I could always tell where he had parked because there would be a large pool of engine oil on the street or on the sidewalk.

Not a fan of the retro helmets, personally (and certainly not open face, I like my face where it is; already went down once and watched the pavement scrape past the visor on my full face which was destroyed and scraped to crap; I'd be disfigured had I gone with an open helmet). I love having great ventilation in my helmet, not to mention an integrated sun visor you can just flip down with your thumb, or flip up with a quick button press if going into a tunnel and needing better vision. Retro looks are fine, retro feature set is some bullshit. 😄

As someone who owns 3 HDs, my view on the newer models is that they are plagued with electrical issues. I’ve got a 2015 FXDB. Looks great, lovely to ride. After 8000 miles throttle position sensor failed. 12000 miles crank position sensor failed. Now with 24000 miles it’s again off the road with an electrical issue - possibly needing a new BCU (£550 + labour). Yet my wife’s 2010 XL883 has minimal electrics and just keeps going. In UK we also suffer from poor dealership coverage, which means getting repairs done can be a waiting game, and independent garages (and many claim they won’t touch HD) are usually so booked up, it can be months of waiting. I do like HD, but I’ll stick with the older ones.
Another favourite traveller crime is the laptop in a bag scam. They pull up beside you and show you a high quality laptop or similar in a bag. Even let you see it working and haggle a price. You’ll go to the cash point, handover the money, take the ‘laptop’ and they speed off. It’s only then you find you’ve paid hundreds of pounds for a bag containing a couple of bottles of water. 👍

8:02 hi Freddie, I have been riding the Roeg Peruna gen I lid (the enduro styled one) daily for over a year now - it is a great quality helmet in general, the only downside I can point is that only cheekpads are removable and therefore easily washable. apart from that, it is extremely comfortable and I love it both around the chimney an for longer trips. cheers from Poland!

Also, the bike really suits you!!

Just returned from cruising the western Med, never saw a cloud for two weeks and with temperatures approaching 40 degrees C. Been home for three days now and it's not stop raining on and off here in S. Wales and there's more rain forecast, in fact the wife switched on the central heating for a while yesterday. I'm itching to get the Honda out but it's not going to happen just yet looking at the forecast.
Like the look of the Harley but I've never considered one, the Triumph Rocket? Now I'm looking forward to seeing you ride that one, looks to be one hell of a machine as I recently saw one in Mumbles west of Swansea. Ride safe Freddie.

Riding in the rain is great. Obviously you need a rain suit or similar to stay dry; being soaked to the skin is nasty, obviously. But it sure is a great cure for sensory deprivation, all those scents you pick up, and so on. There's no such thing as bad riding weather, just bad riding gear. 😄
