I live in Norway I just have to open my window and my computer is -20C
I do the same #Nord-Norge ;)
Brb bringing my mining farm to Norway I'll warm it up
and so are you, because you are in the same room as your computer ^^
yeah you could just leave it here all year because of our shitty summer weather aswell
SylenDraws same here in Finland
Linus: Putting your computer in the fridge is stupid.

Damn you make some good content
Yeah I just paused the video to comment this. Kinda pissed me off haha

Jarrod'sTech fucking editors
But what if I wanted to hear the story......
they probably cut it because the video would have been too long. I wanted to hear it too though :(
Same, wanted to hear his funny story
I want to hear it
I want to too, it's probably floatplane exclusive or something now
I wanted it too.

You work in a/c you're the resident hack
Have you noticed he said "compresses gas that came from the condenser to compressed fluid into the evaporator" . Lmao thats opposite of cooling
This just took me back to the early 2000s and my dream that never was. I enjoyed seeing it come to life. Thank you!!
I demand a seperate video dedicated to Linus' fun story.
YES! I MUST KNOW! YOU CAN'T JUST LET HIM START AND THEN NOT FINISH IT! REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!

LINUS WHERE IS THE OVERCLOCKING seriously dude that is the only reason to do this and you skipped that part
IKR, I watched to see overclocking and benchmark scores!
ua-cam.com/video/4d0B0Dli-1g/v-deo.html = Same thing for last time
Actually...not the only reason to do this :S
Probably they committed it since it's already a given the Ryzen 1 cannot achieve stable overclocks past 4.0 Ghz.
Aaron Goodrich hmmm I'm not sure how that addresses our statements. That is a different CPU and there seems little point to set it up and not run an OC and a few benchmarks.
I wanted to hear the story. Story time with uncle Linus.
Your channel is By far my favorite computer tech to watch. I became interested in computer technology since windows 1.0 back around 1985-87. 30 plus years building computers .Thank you for your videos :) Ohio
This is why I love this channel, janky stuff from Linus what noone else does :D
Gotta squeeze every bit of performace out of that hardware for those extra barrels in Crysis
you paying for likes or just chemo?
Why would I pay for likes?
someones a jealous little boy, aren't they? Danny is just lovely and funny.
What is your obsession with barrels on crysis? This is the 5th time I've seen such a comment lol
PureRushPwneD It's just a nice bit of nostalgia from a time when people would benchmark PC's based on the number of barrels they can explode in Crysis
This thing looks like a cooling system for a diy nuclear reactor
Actually, cooling for nuke reactors is much simpler. BUT, you need a fairly large swimming pool for one.
I know that nuclear reactors (especially the breeder reactors used by the US) are all water cooled. Why do you think I made the pool comment. The large ones use large ponds to cool their coolant. The cooling system he used added an extra system into the cooling process that reactors don't have.
Jack Linde sry
Found the story
Did Intel hit you up for this when they announced their 28 core '5Ghz' CPU?
Good one. 28 core LOL
OneEyed Jacks
You should be laughing at the "5ghz" part. Intel is cannibalizing it's Xeon range and then they used a phase shift cooling device like this to get it to 5ghz. This could do the same lol.
Intel raided the cookie jar when AMD came over. They have sacrificed their premium Unobtainable Chips to compete with the AMD consumer prices onslaught. 7NM is the next wrecking ball to hit. Intels Cookie Jar is empty now they even dusted off the disingenuous 28 Core CPU Super Phase Shift Cooler and the Kitchen sink.
tsmc has 7nm down better than intel does
Intel is struggling with 10nm, they have nothing at 7nm as far as I am aware.

Loving the jank!! Keep up the off the wall stuff.
Use blinker fluid next time, more efficient cooling system, even colder than Novosibirsk, Siberia.
加藤みずっち but its only good for 10 million blinks
I appreciate your reference.
I thought it was headlight fluid, or is there a seperate liquid for the blinkers
加藤みずっち that was good one, товарищ!
Don't get it in your eyes though, it's irritable and causes rapid uncontrollable blinking.
No overclock results at all?
Yeah why do this when you don't overclock the shit out of it?
anything over 40'c must be overclocked
1spaghetti32 thats exactly wtf im thinkin. Waste of time
Yeah indeed, the next video should be that setup being overclocked
if i9 or i7 was sort of reasonably priced i would be like . hell ya. But AMD is kicking butt with these chips :)
Super funny throwback. Thanks linus!
im also from norway and im old school, so YES Linus, this was worth watching for sure ! :)

10 Year old chiller? Cool, but what about the 1 year PC benchmark?
Maybe they decided to do a 10 year PC benchmark? :D
I was wondering the same thing. Are those 3 PCs still running back there collecting dust?
didnt they move into a new office since they started that?
no, i believe its in the wearhous their in now b/c its behind the wooden set wall and the cement wall
Andy K may have reorganized but don't think they moved since they started that.they went from their office with the whole room water cooling to here and have been here since. Just been changing sets here. I think
You should make an updated version, with RGB of course.

I was going to do this about a year ago. Thanks for helping me learn for your mistakes.
Why the crap didn't you overclock this machine!? The people want to know if going that cold will yield huge gains on a threadripper.
Oly ASUS payed. the threadripper didn't
Tonyert its more like linus paid tips nowadays xD
Threadripper overclocks dude. Just because it's cheaper doesn't mean anything. Ryzen chips are amazing, thats coming from a fellow intel fan. Linus still could have had a lot of gain from a threadripper, even if it wouldn't be as overclockable as say an i7. he could have gone well past 4.5 ghz, probably 5.2 or higher if i could guess, which is still miles faster than the stock 3.5 ghz
You sir, are a moron.
Fuc kYourAds That's not how anything works.
I WANTED TO HEAR THE STORY #thanksedzel
Same!
Awesome video Linus. Very cool.
Had almost this exact same set up about 15 years ago. Had a Pentium 4 B 2.53 running 3.7 GHZ. I also had the video card cooled as well. I think it was a Radeon 9700. Best temperature on coolant was -52c. the coolant was turning to slush in the cooler. Ran this for about 3 months but after i burned up my second video card from condensation i gave up and went to a standard water cooling system. Had some pretty insane 3D Mark scores with this setup.

Also Linus: "Where is that screw from?"

No crazier than water cooling an entire room with copper piping.
@@IraQNid Probably would have solved the heat problem they had a lot better if they insulated the piping.
This is like ltt in a nutshell
I think they could expand on this and do "Whole Room Water Cooling - Sub Zero Edition".
Yes this is why I watch Linus' videos!
did he drop anything?
“Why did i do this?” “Why am i showing other people how to do this?” “Where is this screw from?”
I'd personally use a Stirling engine powered by a motor, to get the low temperatures. Also, powerful fans would be needed.
Linus to his staff:
"I need some stuff from this shelf, just act like you are working while I talk behind you"
Now I remember why I used a peltier back in the day. Entire cooling solution inside a mid tower with -40C idle and -13C full load CPU temps. Too bad the plastic CPU socket disintegrated after 6 months from the temperature cycles, ruining the board. Still, that Celeron 566 clocked at 1100Mhz was fun while it lasted.
I wanted to listen to Linus story :(
I came to the comments just to see if there was anyone who wanted to listen to the story.
Pls do more of this janky stuff from back in the days...I just love it

I do care about your stories, Linus.
The Electroclassic same
i don't. that edit was gold
Ah, this brings back memories. Only I did it with a mini-fridge compressor that had a freezer function, I kept an old AMD K6 going till 2006 being overclocked which is when it failed to keep up with modern games.

Maybe a part two where you partner with someone who can supply you with hardware to do it "professionally". Not very Linus-like but could be interesting.
Maybe a collaboration with Jay.
To see who gets the Treadripper coolier and higher.
Please more content of Linus screwing around with janky builds. It's a great throwback and very entertaining.
I made one from scrath. I live in Brazil. It´s normal to get 32° Celcius . I have a AMD FX 9590 and a Ryzen 9 and another AMD Phenon II X6 computers here in my studio. I work with Post Production. So many fans are annoying sound to hear constantly. So a bought a 1/3hp Condenser Unit from Embraco, capable to near 12 tons of cooling. The water chiller is outtside the room. So with tree pumps, pumped the the cooling fluid at -30°C to the 3 computers , with almost no sound of fans. This is a very good solution. at full load in a rendering process for example, obviously the cpus is not a 100% load , but around 60%, they running cool, arount 12 to 20°C. Very good. Good video from you. Keep the good job. Best regards, Leon.
Now, can we FINALLY TEST a working motherboard strapped to the roof of your car driven at 100+ KMH (60 MPH) to see how much cooling the motherboard and CPU would receive with a STOCK CPU cooler onboard and with NO CPU cooler attached!
AND THEN see whether higher and lower driving speeds would allow us to overclock more or less with or without a cpu cooler attached! Try speeds of 30 KMH, then 50KMH then 80 KMH, then 100 kmh up to to 160 KMH (100 MPH) to see just how much wind speed will cool a working motherboard!
StarGateSG7 is doing this even legal?
@@nota5wagyu Why wouldn't it be?
Legality isn't the issue.... Stupidity is.
@@nexxusty ah
Because it's potentially dangerous? Imagine driving down the highway and a fucking motherboard flies off of the car in front of you and smashes your front window. That's why all kinds of externally mounted things need to pass test first, to be legally allowed to be mounted.
You don't need to mount it outside.
YOU SHOULD HAVE USED IT ON THE FX 9590 YOU WOULD PROBABLY WONT THERMAL THROTTLE
That's actually pretty funny
NICE MEME
fahrenheit right?
You would also need to cool the vrm the same way because of its power usage :D
Toto Geenen one for each phase
I'd be looking at coating the motherboard with a water resistant coating if I were doing water cooling. Doing so would prevent the motherboard and other components being damaged in the event that a leak occurs. I've also came up with my own design concepts for an external water cooler, to work just like a mini-fridge would, with controlled temperature scaling so you can choose where you want the temperature to sit, and also have the ability to use timers so that it can automatically adjust the temperatures for you if things get too hot or too cold.
great vid i love this stuff
Jugs of coolant and washer fluid pour easier sideways, they do not chug and splash. smooth pouring.
Now..Water cool a whole room with hardlines, ...eh wait...you already did that 3 years ago....
Miss those days of madness!..
I want to see him do it again better. If he ran it to an A/C outside an actually used isolated non copper tubing it might of actually be useful. When he did it the first time ti was so janky and badly done it didn't do anything. Surely he has the funds to do it right now.
1:35 Correction (Sorry Linus)
Fluids can not be compressed! (explanation below if you care enough to read it)
The compressor compresses the gas -> the condenser liquifies the hot compressed gas by cooling it down -> the expansion valve injects the fluid into the evaporator (like a spray can) -> the injected fluid expands inside the evaporator and turns to a gas again. this expansion (or phase change) requiers energy. the energy that is needed is absorbed by the evaporators surroundings in form of heat. therefor the evaporator cools it's surroundings. thermodynamics :)
Oh my god...and everyone thought I was nuts when I built mine out of parts from a deep freeze. Thank you, nice to know I'm not the only one who has tried refrigerated cooling. Only...mines a little different, don t use water pipes or lines, copper cpu block with small refrigerant lines straight though it, only using evaporator coil. Condensation is a bit more a concern to then the way you did it. Gets pretty "wet"
I wanna see Linus' janky-ass attempt at liquid nitrogen cooling
He'd spill it everywhere and get frost bite
That was in another video from a couple years ago.
Well i and im sure many others do care about linus's story so could you please do a followup to this episede with just that?
i would love to see this project worked on more and if possible streamlined so it just slight small like could you fit it all in a big case
I really wish you would come to the desert here in Arizona or something and try one of these sub-ambient cooler setups.. on some days we have literally 0% humidity, so i dont think condensation would be as big of a deal as you have it there. I mean, your pump was COMPLETELY frosted over, ive never seen any hvac or refrigeration system where i live frosted over like that.
And that build is older than the average linus subscriber......
haha oh man.
I'm 13. i legitimately enjoy his videos
can't be hating on the young'uns. I know every 'older' person loves to do it but the youths are our future so all I can say is I'd rather them watch this (as mainstream and clickbaity and pseudo-technical as it is) as opposed to some fucking retards eating dishwasher tablets or shoving spoons of cinnamon into their mouths. :)
I'm 21 and I wouldn't be a pc gamer without Linus
16 btw
To whomever did edit this, I wanted to hear the story, people can skip it, you could have put a time stamp of what to skip to
So I know this is a year later basically but really curious if you have advise/input on doing a build like this but with a mini cooler in place of the window A/C unit?
12:55 "cool right"
yeah literally cool xD
(Hans Moleman voice) I wanted to hear the story...
Now do a set up where you keep the CPU outside in the Siberian wilderness! I want to see how you keep bears off of it.
I've been looking for a way to cool my whole case (I live in Australia and don't have AC). After watching this I'm thinking about finding a window AC unit with a condenser that measures about 360mmx120mm so I can put it in the front of my case to air condition the intake air thus keeping my GPU, RAM, and motherboard cold too.
Definitely loving the nerd in you at 7:20 hahaha

that was my question too !!!! -20 celcius and no OC ? i would have died to try it in his place !
No papa Linus story time?
I assume the windshield washer fluid is used because it doesn't freeze in low tempatures and like salt water is a good thermal conductor.
This was a chilling tale
these videos with linus testing stuff is the best videos and the reason why im subbed to this channel
I remember the days where people did stuff like this, it seems like the newer generation doesn't understand that many of their pre made systems came from people messing around with things (like this) as a hobby and now people cant deal without the fastest simplest thing out that money can buy.
Too true. That and they don't care about this type of stuff as much. If they get into overclocking it is to compete with LN2 or Liquid Helium. Otherwise most are just into buying fancy looking parts with RGB lighting that they can easy assemble with some tube bending at the most.
Only so many people put the effort into stuff like this or real case/system modding/building.
That Heat would be great for winter lol. Australian here like me warmth had being cold
