  • In this video I am shaving with a straight razor that I bought from an antique store in Colorado. It was pretty grungy when I picked it up, but the blade seemed to be in pretty good condition.
I sent to a person who is an expert at restoring razors. He cleaned it up and put a good shaving edge on it and sent it back to me.
After that it proceeded to set in a drawer for a year and a half, lol. I finally took it out and shaved with it the other day and I was really impressed with how it shaved.

Yeah, I usually will do a practice shot and play it back to make sure the camera is sitting at the right angle. It took a little bit of practice, but I finally got the hang of it. Then I moved, so now I have to experiment again to get the best shots...lol.

I really have no idea. I guess it's just the way it was designed.

I just tried my first shave with a straight razor and I struggled. I know I have no experience but I swear the blade was not honed even though the company said it was shave ready. It grabbed and pulled like crazy! I tried some tests to see if it was sharp after I shaved and it didn't even pass the hanging hair test. Lynn Abrams honed it according to the site, but it just felt horrible. What advice would you give? Thanks

Hmmm, what website did you buy it from? Straight Razor Designs? If you bought it from Straight Razor Designs then I would believe what the website said as I have bought straights from there and they shaved perfectly.
If you stropped it before you used it, then you might have dulled the blade. When you are first starting out it's possible to dull the blade by stropping it with improper technique.
If it's only pulling and grabbing around your chin and upper/lower lip it might just be that you need a little more experience. Most men's facial hair is thicker in these areas and they can be harder to shave when you are first starting out.
If it's sharp it should cut through the hair pretty easily, assuming you have the right angle.

***** I tried a shavette and got good results with my angle, but I know thats different than my straight. It may not be honed. I have not had a good shave with it in 1 month

That's one way to do it. I'm not sure if I like the idea of plunging the razor into a sink full of water..

It's hard not only shaving, but trying to get the best angle for the camera...
