I have the Berghaus air 6. I have taken it out in all kinds of horrific weather. If you get the air pressure right ( gauge supplied with markings ) and peg it well. It will take a good kickin. I can also recommend the Berghaus gazebo. Good space to sit when the heavens open up. 4 walls and fly net. I would say the only down side is the size of the bags. Takes a lot of boot space. Also never let in a drop of water.
Its my first time camping with my kids and wife and I've just bought the air 6 xl. I was originally a bit worried about it not being the best in the wind but your comment has made me feel much better about purchasing the right tent.
We were camping in Cornwall right on the coast last August year and the year before and survived two named storms in a Vango Airbeam family tent. If you get the pressures right they will flatten but just pop back up. There were similar 8 man poled tents that were literally destroyed where their poles all snapped and fabric ripped. Wouldn’t be in a storm in any other type of family sized tent now.
It reminds me of our fam camping too last week. It was windy and rainy that it flattens some of the tent in the campground. Was so glad we used our opalus 3 that we can cook inside the tent and it stands against the strong wind and rain for 24hrs. Keep safe and have fun.
made me laugh , we literally just lost our anteus 600 xl last week in some heavy winds in Yorkshire, completely snapped all but one pole and ripped the fabric to the point the tent was basically in two ..... and then to see you walk past one and say how well it is doing lol, right in the feels :-D / funny enough all the airbeam tents survived fine on that site.
We've got similar experience from North Wales. Few years ago: Wind up to 55MPH, and we camping at hill side next to the coast. So wind was amplified little by terrain... Our tent was same as this Decathlon tent @6:34 but our was properly hook up. Nothing happen to tent, but We was surprised how much these fibreglass poles can flex. Tunnel tents can survive a lot...
Hey man I remember I was at this same campsite at you when this storm hit it was horrendous luckily I had a good angle on the wind so it did not affect me to much
Memories of a stormy night in the family tent, somewhere in France, some 40+ yrs ago. We had to hold on to the aluminium poles for hours to keep it from taking off like a kite.
I was camping in our air tent with family in Bridport that night. Was pretty bad but ours stood up where some poled tents collapsed. Suppose it depends on the tent eh. Mines an outdoor revolution make if you're interested in changing up 👍
Hey Trev, I have a Berghaus Air 6XL and it's withstood winds of constant speed of 35mph, with gusts of 50mph. Our friends had the same tent, pitched just a few metres from us, and their's was flattened in the same storm (they had to spend the night in their car). The difference? Well, we were side into the wind, decent pegs for the guys, and were slightly over max pressure in the airbeams (our friends were slightly under). There were a couple of points in the night where the beams folded, but they had enough pressure to just pop back up. Literally every other family sized tent on the campsite was flattened - broken poles everywhere! So I don't think durability is the issue with inflatable tents, if they're pitched correctly. The biggest issue we have with ours is it's just so big and heavy when packed. With a child and a dog, we can't fit the Air 6XL and minimal gear into our Audi Q3, with a 420L roof box packed tight. We have to take a second car (all this faff is one of the reasons I've gotten into the more simple pleasures of wild camping). So, yeah, I wouldn't let (lack of) durability put you off inflatable tents if you have a big enough vehicle to get one into.
Trev We camp at the (tent graveyard) Shell Island. The destroyer of tents. It can be so bad, they will give you credit fo days you have not used. If your tent is destroyed. On a bad weekend, I walked the site and assessed the damage. The reason was to see which tents were still standing. Outwell we’re the outright winners. I bought an outwell concord. That same week. It’s an air beam. It’s a fantastic poly cotton tent. Storm guys. Warm in the cold cool in the heat. My kids lend it. So I’ve bought another one. It’s expensive. But it’s tested to gale force nine. We go to shell island because of the space. 20 meter rule unless camping next to family friends. At the moment the concord has a clean sheet against the tent graveyard. Give it a look. I think your family will love it. Fabulous tents 🔥
Hope you managed a good holiday despite the weather. We have a Vango Rome Air tent and we had two storms last year with 50mph winds in Bude. It did amazingly well. We found the opposite all the pole tents were destroyed in the morning but all air tents survived the week. Storm guying seems to be the key with big tents
It was a good holiday, and the rest of the nights was like luxury in comparison. To be fair, there was a mixed bag of pole and airtents that survived and were destroyed in the end.
We were in that storm in South Cornwall, we were in a bell tent, it barely moved! It was our first time in that tent as we have been in a vango air tent before that in 50mph+ winds with no problems. The air tents survived but the cheaper poled tents literally tore to shreds! The air tents are meant to collapse, then they pop back up. But don't over or under inflate that is the key. We always hit a huge storm whenever we go away!
Great vid...a bit different....glad it's not just me that gets tent envy! :-) was out in a storm last year and a lot of my tent poles snapped so was thinking about an air tent....but maybe not now! Or, as comments below suggest, the berghaus air 6 seems to be the way to go....that and pack spare air beam inners and peg out properly....
We was camping near Weymouth that weekend, luckily we was sheltered a bit and survived, I believe air tent rock but just bounce back, nothing to snap. If a pole snaps in frame tent it's game over pack up and go home,
I remember as a child camping at a campsite on top of some cliffs in Dorset - about 50 years ago. My Dad bought a very expensive canvas family tent and this was its' first outing. The first night was very windy, everyone got woken up as the winds got stronger. People were taking their tents down and many ended up over the cliff in the sea. We had to hold onto the poles to stop ours going off down the cliff. Dad managed to get it down, after much shouting at us to hold onto it. It was completely covered in mud. We had to drive home and then dry it out. Many people, even in caravans gave uo that night as it was so noisy. Fun times as a kid in the 70's :)
Well that was different, great vid. Take a look at Outwell air tents. We have emerged safely from extreme stormy nights to find 80% of tents on site down the morning after. Getting the correct pressure for the weather and guying/ pegging out is 'absolute key'. We have an Outwell 'smart air' Hornet 6sa and it has never let us down, even in 60mph, 70 gusts. It's usually user error when air tents fail, with the exception that some are just poorly designed by being way too wide on the upper beams. ''''Just my opinion''' 😁 Basically avoid very wide tents. My all time favourites were the old chalet style, canvas, steel pole tents
Makes great memories. I remember camping with the family in Wales 2011 during a storm. The tent had polycarbonate poles and they were useless. Airbeam tents were just coming out but they faired no better. I vowed to get a better tent. Ended up with a vango maritza 700. Steel frame tent and absolutely huge. No probs with wind. Bit heavy with it being g steel framed buy worth it for piece of mind. Love all your vids btw.
I have a steel-framed 8-man Coleman Festival Octagon, & I'm always in 2 minds about it. On the 1 hand, the frame truly does feel bomb-proof - like I could beat a croc to death with the bag & still have it pop up just lovely. On the other hand, the thing has the bloody wind profile of the Great Pyramid of Giza, so I don't know. I try to take a smaller tent if I'm expecting storms, but then I _do_ miss the living space, once I'm stuck inside! 😂
Reminded me so much of when I was a kid, great times.Mam said it was only wind and rain lol. Also took our kids camping when they were young and had the occasional storm which they loved.Character building for your kids.Outwell are great tents fyi
I have the berghaus air 6xl. Last year at the Lake District we were in similar conditions and only one air beam dropped down once in really high winds when all the tents around us were being destroyed. So maybe it’s to do with the air pressure you put in the tubes or how they’ve pegged it out. We are going Cornwall in 2 weeks and hoping the weather clears up abit
another wicked video trev, we will be on a campsite on monday in the berghaus air 4, i seriously hope we dont get those winds, i think the 4 is quite sturdy in the wind because its not as big as the 6 or 8 man version, i hope lol, we were howling at some of the collapsed tents
Been in one of them before down there, Gold cap- nearly got blown away, there was even a water spout out in the channel, proper bad, next day was like a summer day- ice cream ad weather; we were going home that day typical. Glad you had a good time.
Ah guys, this was all very lovely, family fun, lush food and nerf guns! Then boom, what family camping trip is complete without weather warnings and gale force winds and torrential rain! 🌬🌪⛺ Didn't the family do well tho, batten down the hatches and dont get blown away! Aww sorry you had such extreme weather, you'll look back on this fondly one day....honest 🤗 intresting to see how the tents all compared, wont get a better test! Got stuck in the same storm in Newquay! Tent ripped and all pikes snapped. Had to buy the 1st tent we could find as half of Cornwall was going the same 🤣bit more of an expensive holiday than planned 🤣
We were camping in Devon when Evert hit. Also in a family tent, which fared quite well after a session of putting in some right angle tent pegs. It’s a pole tent (very similar to the one you said fared best 6:23), and did well considering a wind tunnel was definitely not involved in its development! The guy ropes on the Berghaus air tent appeared to be decorative (5:13) - I wonder if the tent would have fared better if they’d been used as intended from the get-go? Great video, very cool to see and share in some of your family time - and to know that we had kindred spirits having a wild time along with us!
That's what I was thinking too. They were really crammed in to a tiny pitch each. Camping as a kid there was always room around the tent to run around it.... And trip on guylines... And annoy dad.. 😝
I was in Polzeath during the 75 mph gusts and got to say really glad I bought a poled awning for my caravan, it was carnage and there was several smashed tents but the air ones really are not upto this in my opinion
That rain you had in the night, I remember the same rain a few weeks back when I last camped, we didn't have the wind though. You did well, pleased the rest of your stay went well.
Air tents work very well in high winds if erected properly. Do not over-inflate and peg out properly. The nice thing is that the air tubes will give and the tent partially collapse in strong wind but then just right itself again. I carry extra guy lines for one side only and use them on the windy side if ever necessary. I have used them on poled tents before but never bothered with the air tent.
I would counter, all tents can survive if pitched correctly. I have pitched geodesic tents in 80mph winds in Scotland and survived the night. Air-beam tents offer a lot of advantages especially in windy conditions.
Loved it! Great to see the whole(?) family out camping!! Glad you survived! One thing I note is I remember 10+ years back your tent would have been considered pretty big, these days everyone seems to have a monster!!! I love perusing go outdoors and I'm always amazed at how tents have just grown grown grown!!
You say that, but in fact only about 25% of my camps have been bad weather camps. I personally think its nath that's the jinx as most of them have been with him lol
I've been through the same thing in Cornwall at least 3 times. I have been up all night re pegging and some times acting as a human tent pole holding the whole thing up while the wife and kids all sleep like babies. We love camping!
@@SummitOrNothing plan and prep...keep an eye on the weather and peg down appropriately.... That year we had a Wynster opposite bedrooms type tent ..but upgraded to Vango Orava 600xl but I've had enough of flappy polyester and poles so we have now got a polycotton airbeam....cant wait ti camp next year 😊
Good video, just seen it! Yeah that looked pretty bad but you seemed to have guyed your tent out effectively which helped a lot. I see so many tent failures resulting from improper pitching and guying out. I experienced this about 12yrs ago in Snowdonia where i had an enormous tent, one day all hell broke loose weather wise, i guyed it out with the ropes facing the wind direction using foot-long v-groove stakes, and it stood firm but most of the other tents on site were flattened or damaged!
That looked like a wild family camping trip haha... Glad you all.and your tent survived. Those air tents looked horrendous in the wind though. But that big Vango tent looked pretty stable in comparison. Cheers for sharing 😃🙌🏻🏕
We were in our Vango Scafell 300 on a site 2 weeks ago in the dark peaks and the nearest tent to us was a Berhause ( looked great until the storm came) next morning it looked battered and bruised and half deflated! Not a good add for Berghaus
Tip , we use the metal screw in dog stakes to anchor the main guy ropes down also how many tents can you squeeze on to a field. I am sure that must be a fire risk with so many so close together.
We are out next week for our family camp. Hoping the weather will have turned by then. I'm surprised that nobody said, " that looks like that bloke from UA-cam that only camps in sh*t weather!" Then everyone rushed to pack down leaving you on your own in an empty field🤣😂🤣 Only joke mate, great video and it looked like the kids enjoyed it. We've just upgraded our tent to a Vango Icarus 500dlx. It have the tension band system so should be good in the wind. Thanks again Trev and look forward to the next one 😀
Can highly recommend Outwell Montana 6P stands 60mph winds on a clifftop easily and several storms so far and still going strong. Only downside is pack size and weight, but on the upside you dont need to worry what the weather throws at you.
I am glad you get your tent geek on as well, when family camping! That wind looks serious! Well done for sticking it out. I am going to copy meat balls in pitta for my next family trip. Great idea! I must admit you have put me off the air tent now. Good to see the odd review of family tents.
I cant help but get my tent geek on, big or small, doesn't matter. In fact the whole family get their geek on with the family tents. The highlight of any trip to Go Outdoors!
@@SummitOrNothing We always end up dreaming of buying a campervan but never can quite stretch to that. Then eye up air tents and end up deciding what we have is just right for us.
putting a tent up correctly helps. The amount of tents you see which are loose is crazy. If it's got creases, then it's a no. 'Y' pegs make a huge difference too.. and are the first things to upgrade.
Wow. That was brutal Trev. We were staying in a B&B in Swanage at the same time as the storm & it sounded pretty bad for us. Some of the wind gusts were strong. Glad you all came out of it alright. 🙂🙂👍👍
If you're thinking of an upgrade, keep an eye out for Dutch Storm tents. A doddle to pitch, and when up, you're almost hoping for bad weather just to be able to switch off and not worry about it. Amazing things.
True, go for a de waard. Bit expensive but worth every penny. We have a tipi from Nordisk ourselves that survives everything and the belltents from obelink are amazing as well.
We spent seven nights on the Isle of Wight at the beginning of August and we had several nights of stormy weather. Took the tent down in near 60mph winds on the last day and broke two poles. Vango icarus 500 dlx with awning was fantastic.
That was a tad breezy, Trev! 😁 We have a slightly ripped Vango Icarus 500 after a similar adenture a few years back! Annoying, as the tent stood up to it well for 48 hours! Great to watch how the different tents were coping👍 All the best👍
We have the Outwell trout lake polycotton tent with aluminium poles. We’ve been In similar condition and it’s like a rock pinned down properly.. Air tents for us always been a big no no..
That’s good to know about those air tents. My daughter and her hubby bought one of those. I’ll be sure to advise them not to use in heavy winds 😱 Would have been real useful to have got a proper tour to see which tents actually survived well. I’ll look back on the vid because I know you mentioned the best one… see if I can see what make and model it was. Great to see you out with the family 👍🏼 Your young lady is a live wire 😂 She reminds me of my middle Grand-daughter.
The trick with all tents is to get the pegging right and have some heavy duty pegs for all the main points for such an occasion, especially with large family type tents! Kind regards from deepest Dorset 👍
@@justvin7214 thanks, yeah, I looked it up and it is specifically strengthened for high winds. They no longer make them but I saw a couple for sale second hand. Looks like a pretty decent tent for the price. As they no longer make them, I do wonder if they make an even stronger version now… any way, don’t need one now, but I’ve sent the details to my daughter. Thanks again 👍🏼
@@hArtyTruffle Glad to be of help although I should've checked they were still making them. Vango are always changing their tent ranges and it can be annoying especially when you're after spares.

They were really crammed in to a tiny pitch each. Camping as a kid there was always room around the tent to run around it.... And trip on guylines... And annoy dad.. 😝
if there is a storm on it's way, pack up and go away😉
Good to see how the different tents faired but if that's not a meet, rally, or festival then the tents are far too closely packed together 😳
Same. Scary as hell in St Ives. Tents binned.
I was in Polzeath during the 75 mph gusts and got to say really glad I bought a poled awning for my caravan, it was carnage and there was several smashed tents but the air ones really are not upto this in my opinion
Great video mate . Lovely family. Weather looked ruff but your tent did well 👍
Glad you all survived that storm , and that the rest of your Holiday went ok , Be Well my Friend , love and Respect to you and the Family !❤
Thanks Bob. A rocky start but a great holiday enjoyed by all!
@@SummitOrNothing Excellent !🙂
That rain you had in the night, I remember the same rain a few weeks back when I last camped, we didn't have the wind though. You did well, pleased the rest of your stay went well.
If i see Trev on a campsite.. i will definately, immediately peg out all my storm guys ;)
If I see Trev on a campsite, I pack up my gear, and put it in my car then peg out my car. Because I know really bad weather is on the way.
Well good time to see what stands up whats pitched correctly stick with poles trev me thinks grand video great times for family 👍👍
Loved it! Great to see the whole(?) family out camping!! Glad you survived!
One thing I note is I remember 10+ years back your tent would have been considered pretty big, these days everyone seems to have a monster!!! I love perusing go outdoors and I'm always amazed at how tents have just grown grown grown!!
Great video as always. Been watching you since the start and we reckon you are a bit of a jinx for weather....sure Nath would agree lol
You say that, but in fact only about 25% of my camps have been bad weather camps. I personally think its nath that's the jinx as most of them have been with him lol
Love it ❤
That's our tent "the best one" Anteus 600XL " 😂😂👍👍👍 we love it
I've been through the same thing in Cornwall at least 3 times. I have been up all night re pegging and some times acting as a human tent pole holding the whole thing up while the wife and kids all sleep like babies. We love camping!
I take my hat off to you and your family Trev !!!
Camping with that much wind is nerve wrecking 😖!!!
Glad you guys got through nicely!!!
Corrrrrr..... you know how to treat the family 🤣😂
Don't I just lol
Our favourite site is on the cliffs just north of Tintagel..one year we were the only tent standing lol
I can imagine that gets pretty breezy there lol
@@SummitOrNothing plan and prep...keep an eye on the weather and peg down appropriately....
That year we had a Wynster opposite bedrooms type tent ..but upgraded
to Vango Orava 600xl but I've had enough of flappy polyester and poles so we have now got a polycotton airbeam....cant wait ti camp next year 😊
Good video, just seen it!
Wow stormy weather there ..
Well I never expected that !
Had a similar experience last weekend but made it through new tent on order lol
We are out next week for our family camp. Hoping the weather will have turned by then.
I'm surprised that nobody said, " that looks like that bloke from UA-cam that only camps in sh*t weather!"
Then everyone rushed to pack down leaving you on your own in an empty field🤣😂🤣
Only joke mate, great video and it looked like the kids enjoyed it.
We had an Outwell Glendale 7 in some pretty rough storms in France about 6 years ago, steel poles and stood up to it really well
I am glad you get your tent geek on as well, when family camping!
It’s always good fun to camp in windy weather! Looks like the whole family had a fab time. Great vid 👍🏻
Was exciting, yes, and the following night felt like luxury in comparison. Cheers for watching!
putting a tent up correctly helps. The amount of tents you see which are loose is crazy. If it's got creases, then it's a no. 'Y' pegs make a huge difference too.. and are the first things to upgrade.
I've got a HELM Compact 1. It's described as "A tank of a tent". (Good for staying up in wind). I've yet to try it out in strong wind.
Was out in that storm camping in Newquay . Like trying to sleep next to a jumbo jet taking off .. tent survived but loads didn't
Wow. That was brutal Trev. We were staying in a B&B in Swanage at the same time as the storm & it sounded pretty bad for us. Some of the wind gusts were strong. Glad you all came out of it alright. 🙂🙂👍👍
Yes was certainly a night to remember. Alls well that ends well though, eh?
If you're thinking of an upgrade, keep an eye out for Dutch Storm tents. A doddle to pitch, and when up, you're almost hoping for bad weather just to be able to switch off and not worry about it. Amazing things.
Also known as Dutch Pyramid tents. Looked after, they'll last you a lifetime. Also, cheaper than an air tent.
True, go for a de waard. Bit expensive but worth every penny. We have a tipi from Nordisk ourselves that survives everything and the belltents from obelink are amazing as well.
Dutch stormtents are the best for that strong winds!
Mary mother of god n all the saints 😲That rain sounded fab on the canvas but the wind was crazy
Meatballs in pitta with cheese, thats proper camping food🤘🥰
Certainly is.
Jelly tents.
The tent Trev pointed out was a Vango Anteus 600xl.
@@clivenewton7609 yes, well designed tent pegs, pegged out right are a must for large family tents. Thanks Clive 👍🏼
@@hArtyTruffle Glad to be of help although I should've checked they were still making them. Vango are always changing their tent ranges and it can be annoying especially when you're after spares.
Real nice family vid mate, that weather was pretty insane though, cant believe half of those tents were not even using guy lines
Vango family tents held up best judging by that footage..........oh the joys of an English summer.
im from dorset i recommend u try cherry tree farm in portland its a great place for all the family plus stunning views over portland i wild camp a lot love everyone of them
A good advertisement for people looking to buy a new tent.
My goshhh that windy 😥😥
Seemed quite the night Trev 🤦🏻♂️🤣
