      Yeah, that’s the thing with government petitions, it had to be reasonable for it to accepted, as much as people over here felt that “we’re dumping money for nothing” and for some the notion of “it’s all perverted because of outdated values of society” in the end, saeima seemed to decide that it’s not in their power to move that organizational money to sports.

    Hi, Adam, a Latvian viewer here, the whole "behave obscenely"part in that petition is more towards the non-binary status of the many artists, we're not entirely anti-LGBT, we've made some improvements to be acceptable, but unfortunately it's still way far away to be completely acceptable, for instance old gens have a hard time accepting Nemo's female style outfit, not to mention, the very first gay pride back in 2000's here wasn't received well with the attendees having to have a security on them.

      that's such a shame because the song they won with in 2002 kind of had LGBTQ themes and the guy that literally broke their NQ streak absolutely loves Nemo and seems very accepting in general.

      @@987liss I don't know what you are talking about. I know LGBT-people the last fifty years or so. The T was for travesty and maybe drag queens. But most people in this community are very normal, ordinary people and a lot of them hate pride-manifestations. They told me many times as I was there or when I was in the city when a pride-manifestation happened. So I can't see how Eurovision has anything to do with acceptance or building bridges. Gay people and trans people have the same rights as hetero people in most European countries.

    One of my favourite things about Eurovision is discovering artists from outside the Anglosphere. If you look at who wins Best International in the Brit Awards, you'll find it's dominated by American artists and the few non Americans who do win it tend to be from other Anglosphere countries.

    Problems include:
    1. Casual viewers aren't interested when their countries go out in the semi-finals.
    2. Smaller nations can't compete with the larger ones on staging due to cost.
    3. Too many entrantsls since the fall of the Berlin wall. Forty-odd countries, means on average a country will win it once every forty-odd years and probably only finish in the top five, once every eight years or so. You may not live long enough to see your country win it again 😮.
    4. Due to various online polls on the run-up etc. everyone knows who will win before the contest starts.
    5. It's become 'too' cheesy.
    6. Controversial but factual; it's not very diverse (too LGBTQ+ centric/too white/not enough variation in genres) compared to the music industry in general.
    7. Who had the bright idea to allow voting before all songs are performed? Do any other contests allow that?
    8. Viewers don't like the idea of the larger countries getting in the final when smaller ones need to qualify.
    9. Over political voting.
    10. It drags on for far too long for the casual viewer.

    • @thecrispymaster
      @thecrispymaster 3 місяці тому +9

      I agree with most of your point but I don't really see the issue with 3. We're comparing it with other contests in the other points but 40 something really isn't stretching it when we compare it to other international competitions.

    • @waddledeedeee
      @waddledeedeee 3 місяці тому +5

      the issue with number 3 may have to do with number 2: the big countries are competing for the same grand final spots as the small nations. and with only 10 available spots on each semi, the big countries with the big budgets tend to qualify more than the small ones, because they have the resources to put on a better show. compare the stagings and qualification rates of countries like sweden or greece and countries like san marino or north macedonia

    • @Matthew-bu7fg

      I agree with 1, 2, 4, 5, 8 and 9. Not sure I agree with 10. 3 seems a bit harsh as others have mentioned. I don't agree with 7... I thought that was a good change as it is put into place to get rid of the whole "we want to perform between #18 and #22" business.
      In regards to 6, I get where you are coming from. There does seem to be a trend now where countries are falling over each other to make their act LGBT friendly. I'm almost convinced that's how we ended up getting 0 points from the public this year. I do however think there is some variety there at least in terms of the music. I always love to see the quirky instruments/different genres which spawn out every year, Also "too white" seems a bit harsh. Most of Europe is white... there's no real getting away from that.

    • @overwavezz
      @overwavezz 3 місяці тому +2

      It will still be near enough the same amount of entries in the grand final, which is really the only one casual viewers watch and even in the semi finals it will not be very noticeable that there are more countries seeing as it is split up into 2 sections

    The problem is, we can't keep politics away from the contest (not that sports are any less politicized right now). Belarus was banned for supposedly sending a political song in 2021 (but Ukraine did that twice if not thrice and that wasn't a problem), Russia was banned for invading Ukraine (but Turkey was never banned for invading Northern Cyprus, nor was France ever banned for the Algerian War), we also keep hearing how Eurovision's values are democracy, etc., but the same contest had no problem accepting Spain under Francisco Franco, Portugal under Salazar, Greece under the miitary junta, Turkey under military coupists, Yugoslavia under Tito, etc. (and still today has no problems accepting eg. Azerbaijan under Aliyev, go figure). The change happened after 1991 when Yugoslavia was suddenly banned because of the Balkan wars (but Croatia, who also claimed a part of BiH - the Croatian Republic of Herzeg-Bosnia - and who committed such "nice" things as Operation: Storm in 1995 with which they ethnically cleansed Vojna Krajina of Serbs, was never banned), it's almost like after the end of the cold war, some form of arrogance took over the West, causing it to become very tribal and authoritarian.
    Sure, let's ban Israel. But then, let's be contest, and also ban Turkey for occupying Northern Cyprus, any NATO member state who has troops anywhere in Africa, Syria, Iraq, etc., And of the remainder, half can easily banned for the same reason as Belarus, ie. sending political songs. We're quickly going to be left with an Eurovision in which only one or two countries participate. Is that really what we want?

    • @andreaslefteri3661
      @andreaslefteri3661 3 місяці тому +15

      Bases on this logic then there will be no countries competing in eurovision anymore. Eurovision was MADE because of politics🙃🙃🙃
      Also political lyrics in the songs were FROM THE START banned, so Belarus was rightfully banned, Greece and Turkey were both fined in the past for political lyrics. Israel's song was literally october rain(if you can't get what this means then you are really living under a rock) but instead of saying october rain she said hurricane, and all the drama and harrassement Israel deserves expulsion like russia did. And yes it is hypocrisy that Ukraine can still compete with political songs but Ukraine as least isn't breaking any other rules
      And one last thing, I'm greek and we debuted in 1974 AFTER the junta fell, we never participated under the junta

    Could it be like 1970 where a good cluster* of countries drop out due to what happened the previous year, then rejoin the following year? Given, 1969 had a different main reason for controversy, but it lead to a lasting impact with big rule changes (new voting format, more performers on stage, etc.). If the EBU does not make any big moves this year, I get the feeling 2025 will be noticeably smaller, before jumping back up in 2026 (assuming the dip scares the EBU into making big changes).
    *Long story short for 1970, 1969 had a 4-way tie. All the Scandinavian countries + Portugal (they placed pretty poorly) boycotted 1970 as a result, but then they returned in 1971.

For as much as we Brits complain about always being last or almost-last (it got me how the news focused on Olly Alexander getting nil points from the televote, despite at least getting 46 points from the jury), Norway have quite a history with the bottom of the leaderboard.
    They've only NQ'd three times, but been last in the final a record 11 times including four nil points. In all fairness to them, they have also won the contest three times. I think Moldova will do everything in their power to continue to be in Eurovision (which is probably part of the reason they often have returning artists who are probably more well off than newer artists). They're kind of in a sensitive/tense situation regarding Russia, wanna be in the EU, etc and Eurovision is probably the only platform where they can use soft power effectively (and let's be real, a lot of the general public in the west doesn't know anything about Moldova aside from Eurovision). Worst case scenario is they axe the national final (and internally select someone with money) and we won't get to see another Tudor Bumbac banger.
    the EBU will probably keep Kosovo in their back pocket for 2025 if they need an additional country. I'm not fully sure if they'll actually end up participating right away since it's a weird situation but it could very well happen sooner rather than later.

    Everyone talks about the contest being political because of the Palestine situation, but why no one thinks that pushing LGBT statements also falls in the political category? Do you think that countries have withdrawn just because of financial hardship? Eurovision’s peak to me was the early 2000s when it was more about sharing your country’s culture. Particularly in the songs, but you could also see that even in the interval acts. What do we have in the interval acts right now? Drag queens, hosts singing about stuff that the majority of people don’t get, some local singers that no one’s ever herd about and some clips of “Eurovision history” which honestly make me vomit because they are featured every single year. Eurovision has become an event to a particular audiance. And 20 years ago it used to be for everyone. Do you still think it’s a family show? I sure think not. So downscale the contest and make it for everyone again and you’ll see more countries coming back.

    We've always had an 'odd' way of picking entries in Australia. For a few years, one of the record labels (Sony I think) was allowed to choose who was sent and they really only sent ex reality TV singers from shows like Australian Idol. Those singers don't have big careers behind them and are always a bit obscure. After that, a 'mini-Eurovision' was held to pick an entry and it worked pretty well. Now it appears that SBS (the government TV station that has broadcast Eurovision for 30 years) is just picking the entry with no public consultation. The entry they chose this year was a very 'politically correct' one who most Australians had never heard of. No one was surprised when they didn't make the grand finale, and a lot of people thought the act was just 'cringe'. The contest has been incredibly popular here for decades, but no one would be surprised if an announcement was made that we were not going to continue participating.

    Norway intends to participate in 2025, being dependent on how the EBU plans to tackle polarisation, politics and security concerns.
    They're basically asking the EBU to tread a minefield, try to disarm all mines and come out of it unscathed. The Eurovision Song Contest has been political for as long as I can remember, and is used as a way for countries to showcase their culture, but also to demonstrate their indignations about societal issues through art and music.
    Regional rivalries between countries will always flare up this time of year, and for as long as Israel is an EBU member, you can count on having people protesting their participation and their membership because of the Palestine genocide.
    In my view, as much as the EBU tries to downplay (and even censor out) the political aspect of the contest, they'll never be able to fully control it.

    As a Norwegian: Yes, it's all about Israel. Israel's participation has generally been quite unliked by large sections of the Norwegian public, before mostly as discontent grumbling, but for obvious reasons it reached a boiling point this year. In addition to all the other obvious reasons many Norwegians also have some personal animosity towards the Israeli government for feeling like we were treated by them as stooges during the Oslo accords on account of how Israel behaved towards Palestine afterwards. Israel's participation, and the ESC-department at NRK seeming defense of ESC including them, was met with heavy local opposition and protest this year and most of the artists in Norway's local competition was against it. I don't remember if it was Gåte themselves or Gothminister, but one of them said something along the lines of "if not for reasons of morality or consistency [the latter in reference to Russia being banned] then they should be banned for no other reason than basic safety concerns". So the comment quoted in the video seems an echo of this statement. The Israeli government also seeming (I haven't looked into it personally yet) spending a lot of money on a voting campaign for their artist, basically buying votes for political validation, has only strengthened the animosity towards ESC allowing them to compete.
    Gåte, a darling of the local folk-rock scene, coming last this year probably didn't help, but probably didn't make a big difference either, if Norway cared much about coming last we wouldn't have kept sending Jahn Teigen so many times (may he rest in peace) or made "Mil etter mil" not only his biggest hit, but also one of, if not the, song most associated ESC/MGP over here.

  • @ivaneurope

    This will be the time for the EBU to do whatever it takes to prevent a potential mass exodus of countries for variety of reasons that had been built up not just this year (though 2024 may've accellerated some issues) - for example the voting system. If the EBU is not willing to change and just keeps the contest chugging along with the current format, then what is the incentive for countries to continue? Why countries like Bulgaria or Czechia will bother sending out entries every year when the interest there is miniscule and they'll have a chance at win only once in 10 years? And most importantly if the EBU doesn't want to change it could risk threatening the integrity of the Eurovision Song Contest (their golden goose so to speak) by alienating big and important players like Norway and the Netherlands. And keep in mind that Italy was absent for over a decade and for them the Sanremo Music Festival is far more important and would care less if Italy is not at the Eurovision Song Contest. Türkiye (formerly known as Turkey) has last competed in 2012 and they hadn't competed since for a boatload of reasons (the LGBTQ+ stance of the Turkish government notwithstanding).
    I think some form of a 'fund' by the EBU to support smaller nations, participating in the contest could be a good start and will ensure countries like Moldova will stay for the long run. Sure, artists are able to cover the costs, but even that takes its toll on them as well and that 'fund' will be of great help. But after the kerfuffle that was the 2024 edition I sincirely doubt that most of the top ranked officials will remain in their roles for much longer - which is maybe the thing NRK and AVROTROS want to see before making a decision. I sincirely don't see a scenario in which Martin Österdahl remains as executive supervisor of the ESC - sure, not all of the decisions were made by him, but he's essentially the gatekeeper of the ESC and many will point the finger at him anyway. Perhaps this role should be selected by the host broadcaster - say in 2025 SRG SSR (the Swiss national broadcaster) is picking the executive supervisior. But then again, most imprtantly, the EBU also needs to be more transparent.
    I think you make a top notch content that I've enjoyed a lot (like the three major ITV strikes and the history of colour television in various countries) and I'm looking forward to more deep dives on older Eurovision contests, because I like your analysis on the 1963 contest and how it was back in the old days. Keep the good work going.

I'm not sure about what costs they cover, but I believe they are quite significant since these countries always have places in the Grand Final, they don't need to qualify there because of their donations

    So, 2 Months later taht doesn't look that bad any more. I think we got 36 nations guaranted for next year. For now, 8 nations didn't mention anything on a participation, those are Estonia, Ukraine, Moldova, Australia, Georgia, Armenia, Greece and Poland. And I don't think any of them will withdraw, only Moldova, Australia and Poland didn't qualify this year, but in general they are not really bad at eurovision and all qualified last year. Not participating countrys next year are Bosnia, Slovakia and Andorra, as well as Liechtenstein and Kosovo not debuting next year. Out of all participants 2024, the Netherlands and Czechia are the most interesting ones and they are the most likely ones to withdraw. All the other nations participating this year are also participating next year, except Albania, Iceland and Ireland, which haven't finally decided yet. Albania is somehow very complicated, some say that they already decided to 100% participate, I say they didn't decide yet, but they will be there 99%. So far as I know, Albania just started directly after ESC 2024 was over, to prepare for their next national final. Ireland mentioned that they will finally do a own national final show outside of their late late show and Iceland mentioned to do some changes on their format of national final, to do a bit better next year. So I think it's very likely to see all of them again next year. All countrys I didn't talk about are participating next year. But now let's go on with that ones that didn't participate this year. First, Montenegro IS coming back with a national final, while Bulgaria didn't mention a lot of a statement, but they will decide in September. Of the others I didn't get many informations. What I heard is, that Monaco mabye comes back after a long time. The others are standing in the stars right now, so we have to wait and be optimistic. And hey, mabye Marokko surprises everyone and comes back, noone knows. Or we got a Debut of Kazakstan. Or mabye Israel gets disqualified and we get Tunesia and Lebanon to debut

    The problem is that the ESC keep trying to earmark themselves non-political which doesn't make sense when they happily ban Russia from the competition but allow Israel to take part. People are growing weary of that.
    You've also got a political shifting of public opinion to the right in parts of central and southern Europe which is a particular branch of politics which is, let's say, less sympathetic of the views of the LGBT community which is the community which is most embraced within Eurovision. You could see the public in those countries putting pressure on to withdraw (ditto Netherlands after the farce with that this year).

    The obscene behaviour does not need to be interpreted. Your nations entry this year Adam was not only offensive to anti-LBTGQ people, but, and I do not know why I have to keep reminding people about this, but to people who do not care about a person's pro nouns or sexual preferences, and their families. Eurovision was created to be a song contest, and a acts sexual preferences, has nothing to do with the performance, unless you shove it down people's throats. Olly Aleksander and who ever created that monstrosity of a staging, was absolutely unaware or maybe they were aware, that this is an event where whole generations of families watch and the oversexualised choreography was not appreciated by 99% of viewers. The writer of the letter in Latvia was correct in saying what they said as Eurovision has allowed the increasing sexuality to enter the contest, which has absolutely increased this century, just watch and compare entries before 2000 to after 2000. It is now hard to see how the EBU can regulate this, which in turn will see a decrease of interest in the contest.

    Really, the competition has got far too big, I mean 4 hours of one competition is a lot. I am a big Eurovision fan, but there are too many, and they all sing one language, not very many sing in their language, which was good as you went by the music only and guessed what it was about. We also have tot see, after a certain war going on, as one as two parts could become one. I think Australia should be dropped as no one could afford to go there, also it is EUROvision and not Word vision, and I am Australian saying that. Small Countries will go eventually, the big 5 could become the big 4 because of Brexit, and in all honesty, the Countries that need to fundraise for anything and put Eurovision first has a serious budget problem. Maybe Eurovision will be affected so much that it will no longer be around. What is the point when the loudest screaming song wins these days. No Country has won with a ballad, it all has to be screaming the highest notes. Like I said, I am a fan and have been for years, but even I think that Eurovision only has time left before it goes. Especially if a certain war spills over. Countries that don't come anywhere will eventually stop, and you could end up with 4 major Countries entering, and to put on an extravagant show just for 4 songs would be ridiculous. Countries don't want to wind as it costs too much to put the show on as Ireland found out, and some Countries, if they win, just couldn't afford to put such extravagant shows on.
