Since you don’t have much going on I thought it would be a perfect time to ask for an “all about baskets” video.

a tip for silencing the rattle - use old inner tubes to cover the rack and basket. i cut slots wherever the rack or basket cross.
Another way to connect the basket to the rack, you can also use old inner tubes to tie them together. Just use half-hitch knots or a simple slip knot. This way you can grab the loose end, yank it loose and the basket comes off easily. Recycling and reusable.

The humble toe-strap. Bicycle user's friend. I use them for strapping the bike to racks (in addition to the webbing tie-downs, the toe straps enable me to strap individual parts such as a crank, to the rack. I also use them as a steering de-flopulator (thanks to Yuba for that word!), and I keep one round the handlebar so I can slip it over a brake lever as a parking brake. Of course, they are great for holding your steering straight in the repair stand, too. I sometimes hold a pump to the frame with one, I use them through the d-rings of a Carradice saddlebag, to strap extras on, top, ditto for small items in a Wald, and even for holding the bikes steady and upright in the back of my vehicle.

I am imagining a bike covered in toe straps now! Lots of great uses! Thanks!!

Thanks for the tip! I was a little worried about basket application when traveling overseas. Will definitely clip the zip ties and use toe straps for those special occasions.

I have a wald 139 mounted on my Surly 8 pack rack.
I've made some aluminium plate into a "hook plate" which bolts to the vertical barrel mounts at the front of the basket. About half inch by an inch, with a hole to bolt through to the rack, and a slight S bend to make a gap for the basket wire. The corners of the plate are rounded off with a file to avoid them rubbing a hold in anything. 5 minutes work each.
The front wire of the basket slips under these. The rear of the basket can be ziptied, or tied with cord, or a strap. Or you could make something similar at the rear to bolt down the basket if you really want it to stay put.
As @Emory730 mentions, zipties break in a crash, so I tend to use cheap small zipties at the back. I also learned this the hard way.
Rubber tape on your rack rails damps down rattles.

Have you tried voile straps? Just curious, I've only recently discovered them here and they look super useful

i wanted to use the tools that wald provided but found it much more convienient to just use a rack.
heavy duty reusable zip ties would probably work too.

A plus of zip ties is that they will snap off in a crash and keep your basket from bending. Learned that last week. >.>

Really? I went down hard and the basket got bent up pretty good but the zip ties (4) didn't release. My face, however, required 6 stitches.

I suspect the size of the zip tie matters. Some of the bigger ones can handle 70 pounds (about 32 Kg) each.

I use voile straps and/or dive knife straps. you can buy branded revelate straps that are like the voile straps. the rubber stretches a little and makes a nice snug, flat attachment. on my large wald I used 2 but could use 3

Small piece of old tube or rubber would stop the rattle fairly well.

This is a great tip, thanks for sharing. I realize this video is a few years old, but I just converted all of my bike cargo accessories to quick release using J bolts and neodymium cup magnets. I shared a video walking through my whole setup if you want to check it out on my channel... would love to hear what you think!

@eBikeaholic I know this is an old comment, but can you share the link to this video? I am planning to fit my bike with some homemade QR systems that use magnets and would love to see what you came up with.

Anyone know if I'll be able to fit two bikes with front baskets on a Saris Bones 3 bike rack?

What about Voile straps? As good as leather toe straps? Better even?? What do people think?

Im getting much better results with reusable zip ties, no rattle, faster, and less bulk

Toe straps? Some dog collars are stronger and cheaper. The adjustability is the only limiting factor, but collars come in different sizes. Hikers are probably aware of straps designed for use with backpacks, but those tend to be pretty long. They aren't hard to shorten though.

I like your videos, but I have a few questions. I am 74 yrs old and ride a recumbent bike. I have several health problems, ie diabetes and high blood pressure. I have 7/1 gearing and am considering a little trip. Should I used may pannards on the rear or use a trailer?.

    • @PathLessPedaledTV
      @PathLessPedaledTV  7 років тому

+buddy savery a trailer adds a lot of weight and drag compared to panniers. Probably would lean towards panniers.

I've just installed this WALD basket ... my shifters can't fully shift because the basket is getting in the way. Does anyone have this issue? I ride Surly Straggler with the 8 pack front rack. Thank you! David

You can either raise your bars or use wider ones for more clearance.
