My take has been daiwa reels are more for taking a physical beating and used as a workhorse where you pick your set up and let the rig you chose do the work. Shimano are more for finesse especially with live bait where you're actions with the rod and how fast or slow your retrieval speed is does the work. That being said its about the individual choices and fishing styles that one being better than the other both are good just for different things. You don't corner a track in a luxury suv and you don't go off roading in a luxury sports car. As for quality it's like anything today some happen to be made on a Friday or Monday when production quality suffers compared to the rest of the week you can get a bad one of anything anymore. Also for U.S. based purchasers a big selling point is mid and lower mid end daiwas are China made Shimanos are Malaysia made except for the low end $50 and unders those are also china and high end doesn't matter as those are all Japan made for both companies as I understand it.
It's funny, because I have the opposite opinion - I think Shimano are more workhorses and DAIWA is for finesse use and delicate work. It's great to have a discussion like this and hear other opinions. Thank you for the comment
I run a 2500 Tatula MQ. Fantastic reel. Shimano makes very nice stuff as well. I've fished many brands over the years but my goto it Daiwa whether that be walleye, bass, pike or musky.
Same story with me. I had about 7 different year models of Shimano Twin Power and I sold them to get a Daiwa, but the thing is that each company is better for different types of fishing. For example for jig or dropshot I'm using Shimano anyways, but for jerkbaits and twitch only Daiwa, becouse it reels free line much better than opponent. Also with Daiwa never had such a problems as Shimano. At the moment my all time favorite reel is 14 Morethan 3012H.

I was thinking of getting either the Shimano 4000 Nasci or Miravel for my semi heavy largemouth and pike rod. So, fishing around weeds, but not super heavy cover. The Miravel looks interesting with that light weight, but would it be sturdy enough? Any recommendations?
If you're leaning towards Shimano - I'd take Shimano Ultegra FC it's a much more serious reel. Or add a little more and go with Vanford. But Ultegra is the lowest I'd start.
i'm getting ready to do the same. my only pause is whether i truly want to spend the extra to go with the Miravel. i'm leaning towards doing it though. hard to argue with getting one of their CI4 reels at $129 (USD).
I never used any of those, so I can’t comment a lot but what I know Stella is a flagship and Saltist is a budget option. You should think Shimano stella or Daiwa saltiga. But if you’re choosing between those two I would go with Stella.

The question is does the laying of the line have any influence? I have noticed that DAIWA line is often concentrated at the top of the spool. If I am not mistaken their spools are conical, the diameter is different at the top and bottom. It's possible that this is due to the distance of the cast, but could be completely wrong :D
