  • In this video Xeno reacts to the story of Costa Concordia presented by Internet Historian. All of this happened because the Captain of the ship, Francesco Schettino wanted to honk the horn closer to the shore than any man before him. LMAO

So, when you analyze the reality of it all, the reason the captain was lying to the passengers was because he knew that his career was basically over. He was in denial, hoping to regain control of the situation and maybe salvage his career. If he could avoid a media outbreak, he might have been able to salvage his career, but he put the passengers at risk for his own selfishness.

    • @Ncyphen
      @Ncyphen 2 роки тому +9

@@ATXnomad698 He would have avoided jail/prison time, but the insurance agency and the cruise company would be analyzing the series of events that led up to that fateful moment.
There is enough evidence that would show the captain drifting into complacency.
It's the captains job to make sure all of his crew are able to operate and follow standard procedures.
The multiple failures all fall back onto him for not being strict with his crew, and the insurance company would have likely demand he never captain one of their boats again, or face hefty insurance rate increases.

The ship was too high in the water and tipped too far. The captain ordered passengers to stay put while he changed cloths and abandoned ship. 300 passengers, 250 were teens on a school trip, drowned. Every one involved were hoping that the deaths would blow over and their lives would return to normal.

This was not caused by the drive by salute- those are done all the time. And to the captain’s credit, his instructions to course correct would have avoided the crash. The crash was caused by an unfortunate series of cascading failures, most of which were preventable. The escalation into a full-blown disaster was solely due to the captain, his denial of the situation, freezing, refusing to take command, and hindering emergency operations.
As to the cascading events, those would be hiring a steerer who couldn’t effectively communicate with officers, the officers being complacent about procedure, the parent company not maintaining the ship leading to the door failure and diesel fan failure, and not giving emergency procedures to the passengers immediately upon boarding (they were going to do it the day after the crash).
Really more people should have been punished for this. But the captain failed so hard, it effectively took the heat off of the others.

actually, sail by salutes are technically illegal by nautical laws. ships have a certain set of horn codes to signal messages, and a sail by salute does not fall under those codes. In fact, it tends to confuse things, because it sounds to others like the vessel is in distress.

[ 36:05 ] My guess is that that much allowance of deviation is in case you find dangerous things along your pre-approved route. For example, extremely high-speed winds, waves and generally storms that the Captain may deem as unsafe to "power through".

How do you fail at breaking a glass bottle against the side of a fuck off giant metal ship? Those bottles explode when they fall off the kitchen counter but you can't throw it hard enough to break it on a ship?
Also, they make prop glass champagne bottles specifically for these ship launch occasions. Sailors are a rather superstitious bunch.

I want to point out a few things: - In Italy the number 13 is considered lucky. The unlucky number for us is 17. The number 13 is considered unlucky only when we are at the table. (The religious tradition in Italy makes itself felt and the 13th person at the table with Jesus during the last supper was Judas). - If you think your judicial system sucks, the Italian judicial system sucks even more. Life imprisonment is practically non-existent, it is given rarely and only in the most serious cases (eg organized crime, or particularly brutal murders). If you expected Schettino to have taken more years in prison, well you are in the wrong country. In Italy, penalties are shit. If it were up to me, Schettino would be on death row.

Cruise liners aren't designed to survive the brutally dangerous conditions of the open ocean the way ocean liners were, and are, they're designed to wander up and down coasts at a leisurely pace. When they do cross oceans, this is called a 'repositioning cruise,' and it allows them to service other routes. They are permitted to detour around hazards like storms if they can, because the hulls are not made of as thick or as strong steel as dual-purpose and ocean liners, and because they are floating resorts, so they would take massive damage from things like rogue waves. Nor do cruise liners have full double hulls, usually just double-bottom hulls, just like _Titanic_ did -- and which helped neither ship.
Today there are very few ocean liners, and most, if not all, are owned by Cunard (which operated the Olympic-class _Titanic_ 's main competitors, _Lusitania_ and _Mauretania_ ), which got bought by Carnival Cruiselines because the then-owner wanted to make a new ocean liner to replace the _Queen Elizabeth II_ when she was retired. Today the _Queen Mary II_ is the only ocean liner doing the same transatlantic route that _Titanic_ was doing when she sank. Like other ocean liners, _QM2_ is not a resort on the water, but a greyhound of the seas. But she's dual-purpose, so she also does cruises in her 'off' season.

It is said that the sail-by salute was a favour to the maitre d, whose sister lived on Giglio. Besides a possible distraction by civilians being on the bridge when they shouldn't have been, there was also the communication barrier and the non-existent adherence to policies and procedures, which is directly responsible for many maritime disasters, not just this one. Such as:
    - MV Sewal
    - MV Dona Paz and MV Vector
    - MV Estonia
Another one where the captain abandoned ship was the _Oceanos_ . But this one has a happy ending because the entertainers led the evacuation.

It's actually pretty normal. What's not normal is ignoring protocol (Third officer was supposed to give regular updates on their exact position. If she had, they would have known they were too close with more than enough time to course correct)
Or doing risky maneuvers when your helmsman basically doesn't speak the fucking language.
Enforcing protocol is usually the captain's job- although the second in command is supposed to help him. Even so- the captain had to know the helmsman was a rookie that didn't speak the fucking language and he still decided to go as close as possible.
This is compounded by him going into denial when they ship was hit. Maybe, they could have kept afloat if they had the pumps working- problem being, those are dependent on the engines, and with those down the ship was sure to sink- if Schettino hadn't been more concerned with his career than his responsibilities, maybe they could have gotten everyone off the ship- and not just almost everyone.
In other words, there was quite a few people fucking up here- but none more than the captain.
