If there was an airborne virus that killed people in an hour as you mentioned, it would actually dissipate relatively quickly as it would have very a difficult time finding a host. Enhance demand by buying out goods at standard prices, duplicate goods at a vastly inferior quality, and sell it to a desperate market at prices even higher for products with quality already better than what you're selling.
