i laughed when i saw the thumbnail on this video. Its exactly what my VT's coolant (and overflow tank) looks like. I had it flushed 12 months ago and the problem returned quickly. Spoke to a radiator joint and he said he sees this often & its the inlet manifold gasket. Big job, getting it fixed next tuesday. Got the VT for $2000 in 2016 with 157,000ks on the clock and i wanna keep it. Runs awesome.
I didn’t know much about my car but I gave it a go. Was a very easy process and saved myself a ton of money. The part only costed me $150 off eBay and $100 for new radiator since it overheated and got a hole in it.
Yep I'm definitely doing this to my vx commodore today and can't wait get everything back into nice freshen up coolant, engine oil, transmission fluids and hopefully thermostats and fan kick in same time then part from that should be sweet as long is not threshed and some of them motors are best motor ever get on most commodores
best way to flush these is get the hose on full blast and Spry it through and take apart tye resivour and flush that right out to you have to keep flushing it all right out then put coolant in it and it should last it worked on my vx a few years ago I brought it like it and fixed it
take the hose off the thermostat and stick the garden hose down it and undo the hose under from the bottom of the radiator turn the garden hose on full and watch the chocolate milk flow
Bloody hell you’d have to fill the thing up with tapwater and then flush it at the end of each days driving for about a week and then put in one of those chemical additives that flushes the cooling system on the last day and after that youd want to run 60% glycol….
Wow... that has to be the worst that I have seen (aside from oil contamination that turned the cooling system into a thick milkshake). You'll make lots of new friend by making vehicles healthy again!
Can anyone tell me if a non supercharged motor out of a vt will fit into a vx Calais that is supercharged. The motor blew up but I have a motor out of a vt. Will it bolt straight up
Very good video Badger - I just found the follow up. It's amazing that car was even working with all that gunk in the cooing system - maybe this suggests that Holdens might actually be fairly reliable... Was it really necessary to sell the car though as it seemed to be running quite well after you replaced the radiator? I was hoping to see how the car performed after you repaired it considering it overheated.
my car overheated once & the head gasket blew. probably warped the head as well. some people get all the luck in the world while others are punished for no reason whatsoever.
Barefoot Mechanic or BM for short.... Jesus badger where you finding these gems..I would be hesitant to flush out the heater core that sludge is probably the glue clogging up all the holes
+RICKAFIX or BB - barefoot badger. I'm going to go gentle on it for that exact reason. New coolant loves to find holes so will put in a light mix and hope and prey.
My mates VT just blew up today cause his said he serviced it. The truth is that his uncle is a bad mechanic and never actually changed the fluids so my mate thought he was running a healthy vet until it blew up it over heated so bad the water pump blew off the block and the sides cracked
Can anyone tell me if a vt commodore motor will bolt straight into a vx Calais that is supercharged. The motor blew up an I've got a non supercharged motor out of a vt to put in the vx. Will it bolt up
After i flushed mine same thing happened, just put a new rad in now though and she seems to be doing just fine. Problem with commys, well any mass produced car is, cause there's so many of them, everyone and their dog had one, so majority of them weren't looked after or just plain thrashed. So when it comes time to do these maintainence things, it's often too late and brand new parts are in order unfortunately. Sometimes you just need to weigh up whether it's worth it or not. In saying that though, these mechanical issues is how we learn, and sometimes experience is the best teacher! Cheers blokes 🤙
Eugh, what a mess! Out of curiosity, what sort of coolant does that car take? GM specifies "Dex-Cool" here in the States; I'm wondering if it's the same name down there, or at least the same composition. That, to me, looks like someone has mixed a stop leak product with Dex-Cool type coolant. After a while, it forms this almost marmite-looking schmung paste that'll permeate the entire system. I've had luck in the past flushing with an alkali agent (Sodium Hydroxide [lye] works well), but don't go there unless you have to. Just no matter what, brace yourself for leaks! :[
+rhkips I believe Dex-Cool is what is specified. Someone told me the engine is an ex-Buick design but I don't know a lot about them. Agreed, go gentle with whatever I do! New antifreeze loves to find holes. I'm going to stick with just water for flushing and leave a weak antifreeze mix in there. Has marmite made it to your side of the pond??
Badgertronix Yup! That 3.8L V6 engine was common across many GMs of that era, and it's gone through many revisions over the years both before and after. It's kind of nice, 'cause once you work on one of them, they're all very similar. :) I haven't seen Marmite stateside, though I'm sure it's available somewhere. It's more common up in British Columbia, Canada. I see it on the shelves up there all the time. :)
Normal for New Zealand water flows the other way down the drain and so does common sense for most people here, i have the saying "you can be sure that you cant be sure"
+Steve Rob I think it might need some chemical flush. Sadly Motorcraft stuff is expensive here so will have to find an off brand. It won't get below freezing here for a few months so I've got time to get it clean before it needs anti freeze.
HaHa....looks like chocolate milk that went bad. I think it's gonna be a while before that comes clean. SMA had one like that a few vids back. Have fun!
+nicole stewart haha yeah this was pretty bad. There is a part two, it's just trying to flush all that crud out. It ended up with a new radiator and he sold the car
Badgertronix it's not that hard to flush if you use a high pressure hose mine wasn't this bad but wasn't good either and I got it crystal clear you have to disconnect the resivour and flush that right out to
@@Badgertronix lol good humor 😊 A car is a car when we are in the Holden vs Ford arena... both not worth the air we breathe! My holden has done over 400 thousand km and still peppy as! Maintenance counts!
Something worth mentioning is make sure you turn heaters on to flush properly. Also open bleed screw on thermostat housing to get all the air out

Sounds like a common problem on these. The car didn't stick around long enough for me to fix it though. Enjoy your VT, they're nice cars

Uhh yea no
I've seen the heater under the dash rust out too. It happens when water is used instead of coolant. It can cause brown water.
Can be bypassed.
its not too often i laugh loudly at something on youtube but that new waterless coolant really is something spectacular.

As soon as I would have opened that cap, I would have rolled my eyes and walked. Expect huge problems and expenses.
Common problem for Ecotecs 3.8 jus done a valley gasket for my VY. Had to change out my radiator too.

Change thermostat as they can seize in closed position.

do u hav any idea how to remove the coolent overflow bottle on these models?
Can't remember specifically. I think it's just a bolt or 2
Hi Mate.. can you help me to find Holden Commodore v6 radiator drain plug? I'm trying hard to finf that one but still not found yet... Cheers
there isn't a drain plug, you just take off the bottom radiator hose to drain the system. Cheers!
@@Badgertronix SHIT....I just bought this vehicle also...I thought holden 4got to put a drain plug in mine...Thnx.. I will do mine tomorrow tc
do these commodores have a plug under the radiator to drain the coolest/ water, or do you have to disconnect the pipe from the radiator?
+Filip Jovceski there wasn't drain plug on this one. It's easy enough to take the bottom hose off.

How was the engine after you put the new coolant in. Is it still running. Did it cause lasting damage. Great vid by the way.
The radiator gave out soon after. It was running fine when he sold it. Cheers

the car was run on mostly water...your water pump and other components are probably all rusty or even gone.
Did you reverse flush at any time?
