- NEVER SAW IT COMING | Wrestlings Biggest Failed Swerves
In every form of media, there are times when the creators will change things after the fact and pretend like it’s always been that way. It happened with Sherlock Holmes’ return from the grave in the late 1800’s, it happened again with the Star Wars special editions in the 1990’s, and it’s still been going on as recently as the current day with the way in which Nick Fury lost his eye in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But of course, wrestling is no stranger to this phenomenon either. No, in fact, over the years, there have been numerous examples of angles and characters having to be altered, whether this be for reasons outside of the promotions control, or because they simply didn’t like the old storyline anymore. So, with that in mind then, let’s take a look at some of the best and worst times where changing the past has taken place, by taking a deep dive into Rewriting History: Wrestling’s Biggest Retcons.

The thumbnail makes it look like Vince Russo is the Divas champion lol
He was....
let's face it. if he was a booker now he'd be a 6 time divas champ....cuz it made sense, bro.
He is
If he were booking the women's division chances are he would have crowned himself Divas Champ as well
The idiot IS a diva 😂
Another point to mention about David Arquette winning the WCW championship is that he donated his earnings from WCW to the families of Owen Hart, Brian Pillman, Droz and Bobby Duncum Jr. Make me happy that some good came out of it.
FACTS.
I was just watching another channel's video about that whole thing the other day. (shoutout to Wrestling Bios, lol) From that and also other things I've heard about it, Arquette seems like a cool guy and genuinely a huge wrestling fan.
Deep respect for David Arquette
Yeah, David admitted he never ever wanted the belt in the first place, but was willing to be a team player. 😎👍👏👏👏
And of course we can't forget Rikishi running down Steve Austin. After all, he did it for The Rock.
Then WWE retconned that to make Triple H the mastermind behind the incident.
*There are various reasons why Stone Cold’s heel turn in 2001 was just so pitiful. First and foremost, it marked the end of the Attitude Era. Second, as a heel he didn’t really have credible babyface opponents with the exception of The Undertaker and most importantly the timing was just downright awful. On top of that, the fans just didn’t wanna hate Austin.*
It was a dumb idea from the get go SMDH
@ProGrammEGR I guess you could see it in a way where his injuries were getting to him, so beating The Rock was probably harder than expected. The heel turn kinda works anyways because he retired just two years later.
FACTS and the rock getting written off for a few months to do some hollywood things even though he was the only one like you said beside the undertaker to be a credible babyface and them briefly turning him face again only to turn him back heel when he joined the alliance in the wwe vs wcw invasion storyline felt like a low blow and a middle finger to the fans.
@@cliffordjackson3 It would not be the first time Vince and WWE would give fans the middle finger
@@zemox2534 Wrestlemania 9 was a swerve
Alternative title: Vince Russo being Vince Russo for 15 minutes
That Austin turn was a massive surprise. Nobody saw it coming. It wasn't a good idea though.
Man the finger poke of doom is Soooo infamous when I watch it back Im still not sure what the hell I'm watching 🤔🤣... awesome video as always man👌🏻
I actually really enjoyed Bully being revealed as leader of Aces & Eights......just wasnt fan of some of the members (Wes and Garrett)
I liked it too.
As bad as David Arquette winning the WCW World Heavyweight Championship was, Vince Russo putting the belt on HIMSELF was far worse! Completely agree about the finger poke of doom. The NWO was already running out of gas when Nash and the Wolfpac splintered off it, and that didn't help give any life to it.
don't forget vince mcmahon also, not only booked himself as wwf champion, but ecw champion, and the royal rumble winner as well, and his son as the "best in the world" winner of the world cup.
@@briwanderz I didn't forget that. I was saying Vince Russo winning the WCW World Championship was worse than David Arquette winning it.
13:12 The way Hunter is just staring at em😭💀
Higher Power still gave us amazing video when Vince says "IT WAS ME AUSTIN ALL ALONG" XD I always laugh it
Good video.
Never knew about Animal singles in WCW!
And the aces and 8s stuff was what pite off TNA. Which was a shame as TNA was quality up until then.
Also, jake as the higher power makes a lot of sense.
I don't care what anyone says... the "Anonymous Raw General Manager" uttering the words "Edge.... you've got those crazy eyes again!" and the subsequent destruction of said laptop was HILARIOUS! Also, I didn't have an issue with the reveal being Hornswaggle. I love that little guy, in whatever role he gets in WWE. What I'd actually pay money to see, is Horney come out with R-Truth as "Lil Jimmy's Shadow", or something along those lines. Lil Jimmy was absolutely great!
Swoggle sucked
@@zemox2534 ya mom
The last WCW was brutal. Not only was animal the mystery opponent, but that was night Sid broke his leg ending his career. That was tough.
Talk about a heel turn.
From my point of view, Austin joining the Alliance was cementing him as a babyface. After all, the WCW/ECW guys were the good guys in that angle for us ride-or-die WCW fans (which I always was and remain to this day).
I love these videos, and I watch them every week. Considering the high level of production, I am always blown away by the number of spelling errors in your title cards 😂😂😂
I knew that Vince Russo would be on this list. Thanks for the new video, Andy 💕 🔥
Edit Comment: WCW was in their dying days from their glory days, so it's no surprise they're on the list 🤷🏼♀️
Stone Cold siding with Vince McMahon at Wrestlemania 17 was crazy
Was such a dumb idea SMH
The best thing about this is SCSA's Disturbed - Glass Shatters theme song.
You should make an episode dedicated to WCW in 2000.
David Arquette winning the big gold belt is just the worst thing ever. It's right there with the reveal of the Gobbledy Gooker. Hard to believe that it really happened. Totally put a stain that belt
Austin's heel work was so hilarious and lead to my favorite wrestling moment ever when he came back to save the WWF
I loved Austin’s heel turn. Two man power trip were great as were their feuds with BoD and Jericho/Benoit. Austin trying to win over Vince’s affections along with Angle and their skits was comedy gold. His feud with Angle was great too.
Austin's heel turn was bad
@@SNOWQueen87-v1g that’s the narrative we’ve been sold for the last 20 years but I was highly entertained.
Yes, it was fun and entertaining but bad for business in the end. The second heel turn wasn't needed.
Nice video sir
I only follow 3 wrestling channels and 2 of 3 have posted about Arnette today. maybe it's a sign I have to watch that documentary today
With regards to Austin's heel turn, the reasoning is because he was getting stale. But i never thought he was stale until he turned heel. Anyone else agree?
Yeah, never thought it was stale either.
He was still good

I loved the Aces &Eights reveal because Bully did an amazing job of pretending to be the good guy
Maybe so but it was still pretty obvious that he would turn. I even remember the night it happened, I was watching the ppv at a buddy's place and leaving as soon as the match started because I had already knew what was coming.

KO being crushed by Goldberg by Fastlane: I don't know if it was a serve, but it is my worst wrestling memory ever.
A swerve is supposed to be something that fans don't see coming. Goldberg defeating Owens was something EVERYONE saw coming.

Keep the videos coming Andy bro
I did not know Dave Arquette actually came back to wrestle recently LMFAOOOO OMFG 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
There's a documentary on it.. "You can't kill David Arquette " Actually really good
I was at that tna show in San Antonio. It got wild in the Alamodome. People were pissed at bully
I genuinely felt bad for David Arquette cause he was basically forced to take part in that story, and even though Nic Gage almost killed him in that death match much later he would still never escape the demons created that night and which still haunt him to this day
Brock Lesnar winning the money in the bank briefcase almost destroyed the money in the bank concept
The segment he had with Paul heyman when he slapped tf outta Paul with the papers was funny as fuck tho
@@jonathandominguez74 let's not forget brock parties
The dumbest thing about arquette winning the world title that is always over looked is the reaction of DDP. why the hell was ddp so happy about losing the world title?
FACTS but that’s wcw from 1999-2001 for you nothing made sense.
Only one I disagree with is the Aces and Eights one. I actually loved that storyline and the Bully Ray reveal. I would have put the "Immortal" story line on the list. While I loved the Jeff Hardy part, the reveal that Hogan was secretly behind it all was dumb to me
While the Aces & 8s angle in TNA was not very appealing since it was yet another reboot of the nWo but this time with a bunch of midcarders and jobbers in the ranks, I still think that Bubba really tried to make the most out of it. He wasn't bad at all as single top heel, very easy to boo.
Bully sucked. He didn't need to win the top belt. It should have gone to an impact original
@@zemox2534 Like Joe
@@num1JaystaTNA wasted Samoa Joe. He won one world title so them and quickly became a mid card henchman
Road Warrior Animal was lame, but it didn’t help the live reaction or the match that everyone in the building was worried about Sid, who was laying in the ring with a gruesome injury.
One other note to give David Arquette credit is he took all the money he made during his championship run, and he gave it to the families of deceased wrestlers like the British bulldog and Brian Pillman. So whatever your feelings do not blame this man for what happened
Like an RKO outta Nowhere
It would've been funny had Vince Russo been the Anonymous Raw GM. At least all the horrible decisions would make sense.
honestly Brock winning the MITB was worth it just for Boombox Brock dancing alone 😭😭😭
I was mad ,Mustafa was so close, literally fingertips always from unhooking the case
Th. Brock (who didn’t earn a spot and wasn’t seen for months) cam and ruined everything
He didn’t deserve to end Undertakers undefeated Wrestlemania streak either
Heel Austin himself I would say was never really the problem, although he had the age old WWF/E issue of refusing to book a heel as a credible comeptitor consistently. They always seem to fall back into having to not just bend the rules and be overly ruthless within the rules, but cheat outright (see also Roman Reigns, who apparently can't beat anyone clean other then his midcard cousin)
Austin's heel character worked fine though, but he was also inanely paired with illogical people. Why would he suddenly align with Vince of all people. HHH they actually explained well, but HHH's injury cut that off. Then in round 2 he's suddenly shane and stephanies lackey, under the banner of a company he also storyline/real life despised.
There are of course other circumstances. The biggest other babyface left to do a movie, HHH (who presumably might've turned into an anti-hero or at least a competitor) got injured. Benoit got injued. And the Invasion happened and prettymuch every heel got sucked into having to join the Alliance as WWE refused to provide a more nuanced narrative with both rosters having faces and heels.
Kevin Nash's flared pants
Where did you get the stone cold theme song cover?
Nikki Bella’s heel turn though, I mean, she was wearing Kardashian-inspired looks during her promos but still got her sporty in-ring gear during that heel run, I know Nikki and Brie made their feud, they tried, it’s just all over the place, and don’t get me started with Nikki’s “wombgate” quote(“I wish you died in the womb”), it sounded like a rip off of RPDR’s Jaremi’s(Phi Phi o Hara) Party City Quote(“Go Back to Party City Where you belong”)
Awesome Video 📸
Appreciate it bro 🤘🏻👊🏻
The worst failed swerved is when Austin Theory cashed in the MITB contract for the US Title
Yeah 😅
Everytime he went for the big title, something or someone would stop him.
Kevin Sullivan would've made a good higher power reveal..
lol Aces & 8s was a good storyline and made bully ray a top player for a long time in tna
Nikki is better as a heel
Brie is better as a face
I respectfully disagree. Nikki is better as a face, in my opinion.
@@1v1_Empire Do you think Brie is better as a heel?
@@pepito2847 no I think that both are better as a face. Brie never has been a heel on her own. Every time she was she was partnered up with Nikki so I feel she’s better as a face. As for Nikki, well her promos, matches and overall depiction is better as a face. Heel, well the video explains the issues.
@@1v1_Empire Eh I still think Nikki is better as a heel cause, Bella VS Bella story aside
She achieved being the longest reigning divas champ as a heel and her promo work is more interesting as a heel
She fits the cocky queen bee character perfectly
@@1v1_Empire Glad we both agree Brie is better as a face
However
I think that The Bellas should ALWAYS be heels whenever they work as a duo
Mystery man was rumored to be sting. Flair kept teasing this by saying "showtime"
There are many things that are incorrect in this video.

More like Hower Power
13:12 the way triple H is staring at her ass priceless

In fairness, Austin was a WCW star first, and will always be remembered as the Stunning One. 😏
I mean Sid breaking his leg had more of an effect on the whole match than the end of that angle
Have you done one wrestlings greatest angles like story wise or plot twist?
IT WAS ME AUSTIN!

Say what you want about Russo putting the belt on Arquette. It was huge for mainstream publicity, and... you are still talking about it 22 years later.
Talking about how bad it was.. that’s not really a good thing if you came up with the idea. if it was so huge for them they wouldn’t have gone out of business.
@@lobsters12111 They we're going out of business even if it was hit. That merger was dead set on killing wCw no matter what
@@lobsters12111 they probably would of went out of business regardless
@@lobsters12111 the merger was a major reason it went out of business, but at that point, it was already failing.
@@thepolacek I just wonder what you think the accomplishment is in something being so poorly received that people still trash it 20+ years later. What was your point with that? The mainstream publicity meant nothing because they went out of business pretty much right after.
Dear lord that Bella Twins story was so bad. And made zero sense.
Funny how Bischoff’s hair went from gray to black lately lol
I don’t think the aces and eights one was that bad tbh
Dude the crowd went crazy when nikki turned on Brie and people were going crazy during the whole Stephanie and brie feud people stopped caring for some reason when the feud was between Nikki and Bree but when Stephanie and Bree were going at it people loved it
@@wes4155 exactly! The Stephanie and Brie feud was good, the Bella feud, especially their match at that years HIAC 🤮🤮🤮
Because Brie should’ve won!
@@wes4155 in my opinion, it wasn’t. The reason why is because they could’ve used this as an opportunity to bring Stephanie back into this. After her match with Brie, they just forgot about her and moved on with no satisfying conclusion. They should’ve had Stephanie distract Brie, Nikki take advantage, win and then celebrate with Steph. Personally, Brie should’ve won to begin with. This match ruined her and she never really recovered since. If u like this match, that’s fine. But I don’t and I never will!
@@wes4155 not really. When with her sister, Brie was booked great. On her own, well, the Bella feud exists for a reason.

How was Brock a failure? Shit was mad entertaining Andy
Cause it only helped Brock who didn't need it. Only got a meme out of the whole thing.
Finally, someone talks about The Bellas feud. It was terrible and idk who thought it was a good idea. I hate that feud
And bringing in Jerry Springer for that storyline
That Goldust GTV was a fail reveal.
Brock Lesnar winning the Men's Money in the bank Ladder match in 2019 was awesome because I attended the PPV and someone who was sitting next to me said that Brock was already at the arena hours before the PPV started and Bully Ray being revealed as the president of the Aces And Eights didn't make sense since he was Feuding with them before the reveal and it had Vince Russo written all over it.
The higher power was horrible.. Stone Cold going corporate was fail.. Goldberg turning heel in WCW was cringe.. Retribution leader and angle sucked.. and that finger poke.. sheesh

I loved the higher made Vince the most evil man ever
Kinda surprised that the Vince is dead angle didn't make the list.
Bully Ray as the leader of Aces and Eights wasn’t bad at all. The whole thing was more than adequately explained in the immediate aftermath.
That was a blatant retcon. It was bloody last minute but they wanted everyone to think it was planned
@@zemox2534 planned or not, the explanation was more than adequate.
@@yedffgdhow does Bully spending weeks trying to end the Aces and then beating his ass make any sense?
@@night6724 If I was a pro-wrestler secretly leading a group of invading bikers in a bid to frame myself as the hero of the company, earn management’s complete trust, and use that trust to snatch the world title, I would make sure my boys knew to beat my ass for real every time they had to in order to make sure it was convincing. Bully’d been a wrestler for years, he’d been beaten up, hit with chairs, and put through tables countless times, why would he be afraid to let his henchmen rough him up for the sake of the plan?
The fact sids leg was hanging off didnt help the nimal reveal either like.
These terrible swerves were created for memes and gifs 😂
How dare you call David Arquette an Outsider. That's insulting to Hall and Nash lol. That was just one nail in the coffin of WCW.
Bully Ray being revealed as the leader of the Aces & Eights made that way too long storyline worth it.
They are making the same mistake with Theory as Mr. MITB. He doesn't deserve to be that guy. As much as I despise Sami Zayn, even he would have been a better choice.
Honestly a problem with Heel Austin is that he was always a more neutral character. He would always fight heels or faces he had his own agenda. So me growing up around this Era I didn't think anything about it. It was just Austin being Austin in my eyes.
What about the hugging and crying?
Arquette story was funny and he should of just layed the title down on Nitro , and then a tourny and WcW might of lasted another 1 or 2 , but the story was also what saved them for a new contract ....
I never liked Stone Cold Steve Austin. I booed him every chance I got.
From just looking at the graphic, it looked like Vince Russo was holding the Divas Championship 🤣
Also pennies on the dollar is arguable with the ad revenue on tnt and wwf having to advertise. Ecw was probably literally bout for pennies
Only if Vince, didn't mess up the nwo_ it would have been a great run.
Just think if Austin didn't turn heel the "WHAT" chants would of never existed.
Why was it blurred out? It showed Brock then blurred him. That’s strange.
Vince has the Higher power made sense. Like no one could be more powerful then Taker then the owner of the company. And it showed the depths he would go to get back at Austin . I wanted it to be jake. But then again last time Jake and Taker shared a ring it was Jake getting beat at Wrestlemania so how could he be in control of the Undertaker ?
While it's definitely not the greatest decision, I think I might be the only person in the world who doesn't hate that Arquette won the World Championship haha Although, that probably comes from how much I love Ready to Rumble...
