From all the videos i seen i really do think catalyst browse is much better and smoother. Even the example here catalyst browse looked better than active stabilisation
Once you start walking around, you need a gimbal, active stabilization, and especially Catalyst Browse, falls apart. Catalyst Browse also takes forever to render your footage, and you have to do the clips one at a time. So you can’t tell your computer to render all your clips and come back later when it’s done. You have to do them one at a time. I’m glad they are starting to put a gyro in their cameras, since it does work good for short clips.
Catalyst actually does significantly better with higher shutter speeds than you quoted. Everyone is so scared of not using the 180 degree shutter rule so they try to keep as close to this rule even when catalyst needs significantly high shutter speeds than 'standard 180 degree shutter rule' dictates. Basically you need to have your shutter speed as high as possible (that your available ambient light will dictate) because you need to have as little motion blur as possible.
1. With Catalyst Browse you get to choose how much to crop in and thus stabilize. In principle, for the same stability, CB can crop in less than Active Stabilization, since it is more efficient and how much to crop depends on the amount of shake. With Active Stabilization there is a fixed crop regardless of shake - in a sense it takes the worst case. 2. So, does cropping in reduce stabilization? That is, does Active Stabilization crop 4K or does it use some of the excess pixels on the sensor so you still get 4K but cropped in? Also CB must crop in the 4K clip, so resolution is for sure lost. Tell us about resolution loss, that is key to this.
Hi, in a previous video, didn’t you say that Catalyst Browse Stabilization is not available for 120 FPS footage or is that just for the A7C and ZV-1? Thanks.
My Catalyst Browse experience so far: on my vintage Mac Pro with GTX 1080, it crashes on open. On my 3900X 2080ti PC, it crashes on stabilize in both GPU and CPU mode. And then the error reporting screen fails to report. Pretty much fits with all my experiences with Sony PC software.
the follow shot of your daughter looked RAD with the handheld shake -- the a7siii looks the most like a cinema camera handheld of any mirrorless that exists, I think it has to do with the great rolling shutter minimization from that fast readout or whatever --what do you think??
You get a better idea of each stabilization capability when walking with the camera where the sensor shifts faster. Catalyst browse is the winner in that department
quick question does the gyrometadata works on 4k 120fps? i know not all gyrometa works on higher framerates, but i wanted to know if this still records metadata in 4k 120fps
hi need one help ..catalyst browser seems not helping me to stabilize 10.2.2. bit footage in the free version ..is it correct ..i used the CFexpress footage to stabilize .Feedback will be appreciated .
How long does Catalyst Browse take to stabilize a clip? for example if you had a 20 minute clip is it fairly fast to stabilize it or does it take a long time the longer the clip is?
Bro I just noticed that you can leave ibis in your camera on and still use catalyst browse stabilization. but only the normal stabilization, not active. works really well with catalyst stab.
@@ahmedreads1794 still works perfectly. the only thing is to have the shutter speed higher bevause otherwise motion blur goes into the wrong directions sometimes.
Hi, I downloaded this application but the stabilization icon is inactive, I was looking for different options but it is still off, do you know what's going on?
I used the Catalyst Browse and found out the export file is compressed somehow and show banding artifacts in the sky. The Slog3Cine3 original file no problem. Any comments with this problem? Thanks!
I watched another UA-camr's a7siii ibis test & he mentioned something about quality degradation when processing gyro catalyst, need to find that video again to verify
@@mirrorlessny the only time it worked was when I was shooting on P mode last time. Even then, shutter speed was jumping around and really high but was okay on catalyst browse. Have since tried on manual and no luck. Footage quality is really bad I have to say but I don’t see anyone mention that much on UA-cam. Not going to risk on gyro. It has been a frustrating day today because half day shooting and come home to not being able to stabilise without losing quality. 🤦🏻♂️ luckily I was only testing it out again today.
@@sandeepraiphotography2111 lucky yea, good to test first,,, it's probably not mentioned much because of low topic popularity & increased difficulty needed to get good results.
Great comparison! Is the “active” stabilization a new feature not found in cameras like the a7 III and a7R IV? They just have “standard” aka IBIS without crop?
Thanks for the video. When I record in a slower frame rate like 60 or 120 and playback the video it always plays back in normal speed. This is incredibly annoying when I'm trying to record slow motion footage and need to check it to make sure I'm getting the shot I want, but since it won't play back in the slow motion frame rate I can't really watch it back the way I need to. Have you had this issue with the a7s3?
Hey Sidney, I like the C browse a lot ,but no matter what setting i do the icon for being able to stable it is not there ,is the a7 3 i have ,any idea what i do wrong
Great tips Sid. Can you stabalise footage shot at 100fps? I can't seem to do this in Catalyst yet. My footage doesn't appear to have giro data. Works fines shooting 50p though.
great video! I'm wondering does it support bulk stabilization on multiple files? like... um.. set a global crop rate, then stabilize multiple files and export them automatically with just a few clicks?
@@david.stachon I just found that the newest Catalyst browse does not support 120p. I think you tested the old version but no wonder this was made 2 OCT.

Would you rather use IBIS or Catalyst Browse????
Would it be good to use a gimbal with no stabilization and then render in catalyst browse?
Tristan Stokes that should work really well actually.
would use active ibis over catalyst
Do you think there is anyway to add gyro data to older sony cameras so that we can use Catalyst ? Thanks for the video!

It's definitely not perfect, but so crazy that an app can do that with gyro data!
Watch Brandon Li video on this topic. Its a very useful feature if you plan the shots you want to stabalize.

Yeah, cranking up the shutter speed is considered heresy for videographers ! Depends on the shot but it can easily feel unnatural.

you might wanna update this somehow and let people know that CB doesn't work with 120fps footage...did you even test it?

Hi, in a previous video, didn’t you say that Catalyst Browse Stabilization is not available for 120 FPS footage or is that just for the A7C and ZV-1? Thanks.
Yeah I'm pretty sure it is not available on 120 fps.
If the camera is rigged up, then I'd definitely try use CB because the extra weight already smooths out some micro gitter and reduces the crop in CB.

Works fine for me - maybe try the newer version if you have not already.
Excellent point on when to not follow the double-your-frame-rate rule - seen that same issue/benefit when using warp stabilization.
the follow shot of your daughter looked RAD with the handheld shake -- the a7siii looks the most like a cinema camera handheld of any mirrorless that exists, I think it has to do with the great rolling shutter minimization from that fast readout or whatever --what do you think??

Agreed, it’s def getting closer to a cinema camera. It just needs to have global shutter and it’s pretty much there!

When I’d use Catalyst Browse, do I need to fully switch off the stabilization, or would standard stabilization be fine?
Yeah, you need to turn off stabilization in the camera
How is the footage look if you combine the active stabilization with Catalyst Browse
you can't do that
IBIS has to be turned off in order for Catalyst Browse to work
more like catalyst and THEN warp. And the answer is...good.
This very exciting technology - I see its in the A7C. As a gimbalphobe I may have to give it a try.
Bro does gyro stabilization work with manual lenses? Or only Sony e mount native? What about 3rd party e mounts
think gyro works with all lenses because it doesn't take any movement data from them

Yes.
How long does Catalyst Browse take to stabilize a clip? for example if you had a 20 minute clip is it fairly fast to stabilize it or does it take a long time the longer the clip is?
