    This sequence of music is simply astonishing; 1973 is where it's at for me. The fact it's finally been officially released solitifies to me the significance not only musically, but in terms of how strong this year was in the context of their vast career.

    The eyes of the world from this show,along with the China>Rider absolutely smokes!! The Pauley Pavilion show gets the love,but this is one of the top shows from 1973- Its a dream setlist for Other One fans- The whole Other One medley is Psychedelic Americana- the reason the Grateful Dead are a whole GENRE and way more than just a rock n roll band.

      You know i listened to those songs from LIVE DEAD for years before realizing that Weir was playing those excellent rhythm parts that support Garcia perfectly.
      Fantastic harmony matched to Garcia's spacious soloing. As a friend of mine said, he can really hear around the corner. This live take is a wonderful example.

    • @tonydanis1480
      @tonydanis1480 7 років тому +5

      3340steve Weir is extraordinary. I spend countless hours at shows and sitting in front of my stereo picking him out exclusively from the other music. Such sophistication.
      But, I've also felt that he needs the accompaniment of Messrs Garcia and Lesh to bring out his peak form. A little adult supervision.

      I tend to agree, mate. I saw the Dead during the 1972 Thanksgiving weekend, and only Billy was drumming. Sounded great to me, more punchy drum definition like on this recording. When both guys were playing the drumming became less distinct---but I never listened to the Dead the same way I do, for example, Led Zeppelin.

    • @pac401
      @pac401 9 років тому +5

    • @tannerboyle7719
      @tannerboyle7719 6 років тому +1

      I agree but I would extend it all the way to 1980. You can't deny the 77-78 years, you just can't. even 76. 73-74 were the jazz years. You hear their transition from the long and drawn out jams with no foundation from 72 that morphed into free form jazz in 73-74. The 1st part of this recording is really a jazz jam with the other one as the base. the other one is never developed only hinted at. then at 7 minutes eyes forms out of it.

    Just ask yourself when you're really thinking for a moment... Is there any better sound musically than a clean soundboard from '73 or '74??? Pick any song but Eye's they definitely nailed it from beginning to end.. Confirmed by them... They were really trying to make it happen and did.. It's so thoughtful.. It's so rare a Dead song is played best the 1st or 2nd year of existence but Eyes is my favorite and heard every one played and I still always go back '73/'74 & some '76 then'77/'78 but different sound obviously.. Jerry's Guitar is so clean and pure..Enjoy.....

      Vinny.. So happy you love Eyes and yes the first time they played it was down the road from me at Maples Pavilion,Stanford Univ.. 2/9/73 That show I played so many times in the late 70's and then made a copy's in fear that my precious soundboard was going to fade away.. That night had so many new songs Here Comes Sunshine, Loose Lucy, China Doll, Row Jimmy and Love Each Other.. 73 was the year if I had to pick but every year and still to this day when even Dead & Co plays live the World is a better place and thrilled that their songs are still filling the air.

    How could I not love this? '73 was definitely a peak year in spite of Pigpen's tragic ending. This has my first favorite Dead tune sandwiched around my all time favorite (ok top 3 or 5) Dead tune. I eventually realized it is impossible for me to ever rank the songs except put in 3 levels maybe. The ones that I would travel through time and space to hear each version, the ones that I like a great deal, and the few that I just don't care to ever see performed live again (Little Red Rooster).
