9/19/70 Fillmore East, New York, NY
Here is some high-energy Grateful Dead to get us all primed for New Year's Eve. Before Going Down The Road Feelin' Bad was introduced in the repertoire (that would happen a few weeks following this show), a Not Fade Away -} Lovelight combo was somewhat common. This version is probably one of the finest performances of that pairing (5/7/70 from MIT is a strong contender but the abysmal audience recording makes it almost unlistenable).
This version of Not Fade Away is a personal favorite because Garcia slips in two dazzling thematic jams -- a few China Cat licks immediately preceded by the most-developed Darkness, Darkness jam ever played (The Youngbloods). The transition back into Not Fade Away is seamless and the screaming finale led by Weir and Pigpen is exceptionally hot. Without a moment to catch your breath, the band begins the opening notes of Lovelight.
This filthy version of Lovelight has become legendary because Pigpen drops the F-bomb like a dirty sailor. It actually was a pretty radical thing to do at the time and certainly caught Bobby off guard who asks, "Uh Pigpen, did you say fuck?" Seizing the opportunity, Pigpen emphatically responds, "I said FUCK." This energizes both the band and audience even more, bringing things to a boiling point. The thermonuclear finale is one for the ages. Following the last crashing note Pigpen drops a huge Hiroshima F-bomb on the already frenzied audience leaving them in a prurient mushroom cloud of sweaty pheromones.
Appropriately enough, the post-show house music is Get Together (The Youngbloods, again) which is a nod to both the aforementioned Darkness jam during NFA and Pigpen's salacious rap during Lovelight. Just as you are relaxing with a post-intercourse cigarette Phil brings Pigpen out for a final "encore" so that he can ask, "Why don't you guys go home and fuck somebody?"
Just another evening of magic at the Fillmore East with the Good Ol' Grateful Dead. Bring on NYE.

Saw them on this tour. At the Pasadenic Civic. So much pot smoke in the air, the cops didn't even bother busting anybody. They just came by and told us to put it out. Which we did for about a minute. The Dead tore it up. They particularly killed on Easy Wind, but the whole show was a f**kin rager. In those days they played with this kind of reckless ferocity, this kind of blazing, furious joy. When I listen now, that's what I remember. They were unpolished but they were also totally immersed. No posing, no mailing it in. No pandering. Just roaring off the stage like a storm. To me "Love light" is one of those rock and roll roots songs, like Johnny B Goode or Hound Dog, one of those songs that kind of defined the music. No wonder, of all the R and B songs they could have covered, they covered that one.
Thanks for the wise words Uncle Skip
Lovelight is just too good man
I didn't hit the scene until the mid-80s, but I love these earlier shows. Someone described it to me as "primal Dead". So fitting.
Thank you for the insight, love the personal experience from the show!
Thank for the Comment, nice to hear old storys
Well.. you can tell.. the audience got the message pretty clear and solid
Too right! Enjoy yourselves was it i think!! Peace and love ems
Old Mr nine fingers, could Shirley pull it off. Holy goodness God bless pigpen
This is by far the most energetic NFA JAM INTO ONE OF PIGPENS BEST LOVELIGHTS IVE HEARD. IF THERE IS A BETTER ONE FEEL FREE TO SHARE OR GIVE ME A DATE AND I WOULD LOVE TO COMPARE THEM. THE WHOLE BAND IS ON FIRE INCLUDING THE CROWD AND WHO CAN BLAME THEM.
the SUN IS our rock.Rock On!!!! She wont, repeat, wont fade away--at least for a very long time.🏹🇺🇲🏴☠️🦓😜🔭🏜️
not for a long long time
10-22-67 is a better Lovelight...pure, powerful n simple, no extra talking about playing pocketpool. If you want a Lovelight that is paired down to essentials, nothing is better
Can't beat it, enjoy it while you still got time
YES!! YES!!! THIS IS IT!!
Crazy awesome show.. Grateful Dead at their very best, taking you on a timeless, boundless NFA journey. Then Pigpen tearing through with a rip roaring, crushing version of Lovelight. Hard to find something better.. Thanks for posting.
Ain't it amazing, what they were capable of
K. Great jam, I'll take it for a birthday present. Since it was my birthday, just slightly before I was born. 6 I believe.
The old milk drop visualizer
6:10, that sick Darkness Jam!!
I think they only did it 3 times?? But this one is the best I heard (I know a number of friends who would definitely agree!)
Darkness Jam into China Cat jam. Wow!
Doesn't hurt that back in the day, when I first heard this, there were certain "other" influences going on at the time... That's in the past, on a cleaner path now, but there were good times back then (unfortunately I had no off button).
Always love the Dead. And always have the tapes, err, CDs, err digital files. Things have changed a tad :)
wow... a first for me, quoting "darkness, darkness" !!!!

Would LOVE to see that!!

apart from darkness darkness, plethora of jams from chinacat, the other one and many more..
is that "Darkness Jam" which sounds a bit like Cold Rain & Snow before going into the China Cat Jam?
I wonder where I can obtain the mysterious U31DoD software. Anything to make these kind of visuals in realtime. Also kinda wondering about the B&W footage of the show.
Pigpen! Did you say F**K!!!!
