Ned Lagin: “There were three nights scheduled at Alexandra Palace in London. For the third show [9/11/74], it was generally agreed that we would all take LSD, to recoup the good old Grateful Dead... The audience at Alexandra Palace was like the dream Grateful Dead audience. I’ll never forget the wide-eyed wonder of the people in the front rows as they were hearing this. They were dancing and moving and swaying, and they were all so blissfully happy. They looked the way we felt and played. It was just a magnificently beautiful moment. I was set up next to Jerry and we played very closely that evening, the two of us alternating playing lead. At the end of the long sequence, “Eyes of the World” into electronic jamming and out into “Wharf Rat,” Jerry came over to me and was just laughing, a prolonged loud belly laugh. How happy that evening and that moment was. The guitar pick he played with that night-he set it down on my electric piano, right above middle C.”
I worked with a man who was a member of the Handel and Hayden Society in Boston. I played this and Weather Report Suite for him. No more problems playing my music at work.
Great art is great art, regardless of genre. And like always recognizes and responds to like. IIRC, Bobby had spent yrs studying classical before he moved on to folk, rock, jazz, and the Dead; if so, WRS clearly shows those influences.
74 definitely has the finest versions of Eyes. This is a stellar example of why they are so good, 20 minutes of bliss complete with the awesome coda as the song winds down, which was dropped soon after.
You go to the comments section of any Dead song and all you see is pure bliss, hapiness and connection. That's so powerful. I can't think of a band that made music as powerful as this right here... We must keep this music alive - maybe it's our last resort to this distopian world we're beginning to see nowadays.
after a solid train of thought I can say this is impressive. 74 was their strongest year overall after the pig pen spell ended. this is an amazing recording for all members involved
“Eyes of the World” is another one of those tunes that I really love to play. It reminded me of my days in Greenwich Village again, listening to the first Bossa Nova Stan Getz gigs that he played with Astrid Gilberto. To somebody that may be a reach, but there was always that Bossa Nova light, rhythmic feel to “Eyes of the World,” which I really love. - Ned Lagin
Ned Lagin! Saw/heard you at Winterland with Phil back in the day. Sonic bliss. I remember I went all the way in the back, top, middle of the hall. I tell you the walls were literally vibrating on some of those deep bass tones. You could hold your hand just barely away from the wall and it would slap your hand. Thanks for the memories! I dig your Stan Getz/Astrid/Bossa comment. Beautiful stuff. (Jazz lover/player.)
Tyler, first of all don't worry about the idiot that doesn't like this. This is an amazing version. The song itself was great to hear, but the jams are pure Dead. I love when they jam out Eyes. This is my first time actually hearing this show. Sounds great. Thanx for posting this.
Just ask yourself when you're really thinking for a moment... Is there any better sound musically than a clean soundboard from '73 or '74??? Pick any song but Eye's they definitely nailed it from beginning to end.. Confirmed by them... They were really trying to make it happen and did.. It's so thoughtful.. It's so rare a Dead song is played best the 1st or 2nd year of existence but Eyes is my favorite and heard every one played and I still always go back '73/'74 & some '76 then'77/'78 but different sound obviously.. Jerry's Guitar is so clean and pure..Enjoy.....
We gotta recognize Bear-Owsley for the sound system, and Bob & Betty (Matthews & Cantor, respectively) for their most excellent sound boarding. It is usually their sound board recordings that we are cherishing from that period.
I love how the Seastones before this video has 60k views and the ever popular (& rightly so) Eyes here only has 13k. Seastones and weirdness lives on. And has a future.
This Eyes was sandwiched in between the spaciest 2nd set ever done by the band. Starting from PITB until Wharf Rat, over an hour+ of jazz & space. Unreal.
Ned is center w Phil and Jerry is hard panned. Great energy and fresh. Rich tone have anything to do with different power setting, or is this just another great Betty Board?
We’re all blessed to hear a song that’s never going to end. We can hold it in our hearts to the end of our lives.

Eyes agree 🐔

Joyful, sorrowful, firm, gentle, playful, and explorative
The Grateful Dead start my day every day and save my life in every way. And I am grateful. Happy New Year 2021 to everyone!
ineffably sublime. The 9 Muses dance to this...
That sounds soooo good I am in tears!
One of my top 5 Dead shows.
Simply beautiful ~

Definitely in the Eyes pantheon. This version belongs on Mt. Eyesmore
Along with 7-31-74
"President Eyesenhower"....minus the Republican part. Only because his party has fallen so damn far.
WINGS A MILE LONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LONG LIVE THE GRATEFUL DEAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
jazzy and sublime, thank you for uploading
daiisukidesu YES! I prefer the slower, jazzier Eyes... 👀
So beautiful and clean
I don't have the words so I just have to say beautiful.
Ineffable.

Love the "Wall of Sound" years.Thank You 😁

Scarlet Begonias from Winterland 1974 is so clean
You nailed it man. Well said!
Mogie4488 For me, the mood of 73/74 comes from Bob's tone. I've never heard anything like it before, so smooth and warm, but not overly wooly
Poifect!!

Thanks for making my birthday so much better👌🏻
Keith on his Hammond B3 is funky and delicious and highly under rated. very 70's. but in a non dated, timeless, cool way.
Keith isn't playing a B3; he's on an acoustic piano. I think you're thinking of Ned Lagin who's playing a Fender Rhodes.
Heaven
This is the groove representing being at ease for 20 minutes or so
On the day when I was born.
prove it
That's a line to another Dead song.
Daddy sat down and cried
Could not be denied...
@@ras124 don’t prove it...just groove it...🐔
More 74!!!!!
WoW!!!
Beautiful :D
I was there x
Plenty of Phil 💣
So good...

Seastones is awesome.
I miss live concerts so much :(
verynice
This is a nice slice in time, Jerry was in his prime .The version of Eyes of the World on without a net is also worth a listen .
Wayne Gagnon "worth a listen"... I'd say.
That sax of Branford in N.Y. 1990 helps the DEAD create one of best performances in history... by anyone.
This Eyes was sandwiched in between the spaciest 2nd set ever done by the band. Starting from PITB until Wharf Rat, over an hour+ of jazz & space. Unreal.
Hello from Patti Cornell hi Bobby

..there is ( was ) nothing like a Grateful Dead concert ...
Is...
I think I've found the one!!!😀
Charles Shields glad for you ! I found mine and it’s another one but still it’s a very great version
