Honestly, the biggest issue for me getting this one was the fact that we had a BET-C wandering around, it kept walking on the tracks and knocking us off or blocking where we wanted to place a new section. But we eventually managed to wind it around the cave four times and then to the finish line, throwing us right off the edge and back onto the refinery.
For those that don't know: While grinding on a pipeline you can hold Shift (L3 or on console) to lock the camera to the movement of your dwarf making for a very good ride.
So the best way to do this is on a haz 1 as Driller. Find a low area and start Drilling down at an angle. Go until you hit the end of the vertical limit. Then drill horizontally as much as you can. Start grinding at the bottom. Enjoy your ascent at mobility chair speeds.
Terrain is your biggest enemy for this achievement, which means engie in either sandblasted or magma core is the best way to get it. Though driller with enough fuel is just as viable if you know how to make a corkscrew in the wall.
Did it solo took me 48 minutes as driller had to dig through the walls and ceiling I even had to weave the pipes because there was no more space left although making the spiral pipes to the ceiling was pretty fun to see on the map I was also pretty lucky for all the lootbugs to spawn in a crater in the corner of the map
Ah, the achievement of the unending que. I did this achievement as driller and it also took me like an hour to two hours. I had mostly the same findings that you had but what I did with driller that made it a little less hazardous is the driller's bore is enough space for two pipes side by side so I spent most of my time at the top of the map avoiding the bedrock unbreakable terrain while slowly curling around the drop pod's entry hole. I then... slowly broke every extra pipe and connected the 3rd pumpjack and completed the mission too... so I might have made that a bit difficult on myself there. This still is an interesting achievement for figuring out way too much information around the pipe laying mechanic!

says "don't know where to put pipes"... also plays driller... equipped with c4 and drill... just explode and drill into ANY direction and make space, man
It's not that hard with 2-3 Drillers and a Engineer or 2. you can dig out tunnels to lay pipe, and since gravity works to your advantage you can go up and down like 4-5 times for 2 minutes of Grind time. Edit: Helps to have a stop watch handy to time the travel.
I actually helped two randoms get the achievement in the second stage of last week's normal deep dive, all that open space was great for track layout
