    Thank you for making this. I have the identical P-71 model and spilled a glass of wine on it and a quarter of the keys stopped working. I was able to use this as a base for disassembly so i could get to the guts and clean the PCBs and membrane switches. And if any of you out there every spill liquid on the keys, DO NOT PRESS ANY OF THE KEYS after the spill. The membrane switches act like little plungers against the board and pressing the keys with liquid pooled around the switch will actually suck the liquid into the switch. best thing to do is tilt the keyboard forward and let the liquid drain away and keep it like that for a few days.

    So helpful - thanks for making this video. Extra kudos for using a hand screwdriver - I used an electric one and it still took forever to unscrew the dozens of screws! In my case I had a "broken" note, but it turned out that the mechanism for the note had somehow come unclipped, and I just pushed it back together.

      You're very welcome! I think I through out half the screws so I won't need to bother with the pain again - just don't tell Yamaha! (I rarely move it around so I'm not worried about the stability of the casing). Thank you for watching!

    Hello Cory... I just want to really give you a heartfelt THANK YOU for this video! After getting a stupid $150 estimate from a local repair shop last week, I decided to follow your instructions on my Yamaha-P71B (this is the same piano as yours but the Amazon version, no difference whatsoever), and of course, my F4 sharp black key had somehow cracked right at the top of the plastic, just like your piano. The G and A keys to the right were also soft, apparently because of this (maybe also because of the dust that had built up inside, who knows). The crack was right at the top so I proceeded to apply the crazy glue which seemed to fix it altogether, but with my key it became apparent that it was best to place a very small cut of a bread clip at the bottom and not the top. If anyone tries it this way, you have to make sure that the white keys do not touch that bread clip when you press them.
    By the way there are around 60 screws at the bottom... 11 inside... So over 70 screws, not 47! What a pain that was. If you have an electric screwdriver it will save you so much time. But I got it done and that F sharp and the adjacent keys are now back to normal. I hope it holds up over time! Thanks again!!

    • @corytoddmusic
      @corytoddmusic  3 роки тому

      You're welcome Ivan! This is exactly why I decided to make the video. Many people don't realize that sometimes paying out the money for repair is either too expensive or just ridiculous if it can be fixed at home, and certainly in my case buying a new one was not an option. I'm glad you got it fixed up. And, remember you can also swap out any of the octaves to a new location on the keyboard. So you can move the repaired one to a lesser used area, and move the lesser used octaves to the middle to give yourself a brand new feeling in the centre of the keyboard. :)

    Thank you sir. Going to attempt to troubleshoot tomorrow. The last 3 C notes aren't responding and a couple other random notes in that range. Hoping it's just something simple like from just being dirty or something. Good to see the process of taking it apart before attempting it myself.

    • @corytoddmusic
      @corytoddmusic  3 роки тому

      I hope it does just need a cleaning. If the notes still don't work, you could try using it as midi-only via usb to trigger piano samples on a computer. I'm not sure how the electronics work, but it may be possible to do that even if the internal samples don't trigger.

    • @ArchyBeatz
      @ArchyBeatz 3 роки тому

      @@corytoddmusic Yeah I tested to see if the midi still worked but no luck. I took it apart with no problem and saw it was pretty dirty. Gave each piece a few light taps to get the dust out and I put it back together.
      Initially when I tested it all the same notes weren't working. I turned it off and did something else cause I was frustrated lol. I came back it an hour or two later and everything was working fine and has been for the last day. Hopefully it doesn't give out on me anymore. Thanks again.

    Thank you for posting this. What this video lacks in focus it more than makes up for in detail and explanation. Like so many other people who have left messages, this video gives me the confidence to rip open our P45 and repair it. As a note, a company named Syntaur ships replacement keys out of Texas, United States. Each key group is about $15. Based on the loose keys we have I ordered 5 key groups. Maybe some of them will just be loose screws but I only want to remove 45-ish screws one time and the key parts are returnable. Thank you again for this great video.

I opened it up and just had to pull the weight rods back into place thanks to your video. I am very grateful to you. The only other thing is that the highest group on the keyboard seems to have very low volume compared to the other groups. More so than the normal sound so I may need to replace that group but I. @sebsikora10 4 роки тому +1

      Hey J, I own a p45 and also find the high-pitch keys to be lower in volume, needing to strike them harder to get the same perceived volume. I have read many reviews of the p45 by others that also note this, so I guess it's not a fault as such, just how this model works. To be fair, I poked the real piano that someone I know owns, and this was also the same in this regard, so maybe in the p45 it is by design...

    • @corytoddmusic
      @corytoddmusic  4 роки тому +1

      You're very welcome. That is awesome! Have you tried listening to the higher pitch keys with and without headphones? I'm just wondering if the speakers aren't capable of producing a consistent volume across all octaves. If that is the case, you could find some inexpensive but higher quality speakers and solder them in. ;)

    • @corytoddmusic
      @corytoddmusic  4 роки тому +1

      I think it's just the "grading" that they use to simulate the feel of a real piano. I don't have any experience with other digital pianos (other than a clavichord 20 years ago), so I don't know how the p-45 compares to other piano's in it's grading. If J's is a clone, then it might not be made to the same specs as a Yamaha.

    Thank you for the video!!! It helped a lot. Quick question: after putting back everything, I'm finding the keys now make a bit of sound (like rubbing against something, even squeaking or something). Did that happen to any of you? Did you add grease in the keys when you opened it? Should I maybe? I didn't remove any of the grease that was there in the first place, but thought maybe it is the problem.

    • @corytoddmusic
      @corytoddmusic  2 роки тому +1

      You're welcome! The only squeaking sound I experienced was when I had accidentally glued the keys together. This is briefly mentioned at: 07:52 in the video. As I would press down one key it would force the key beside it to move down as well, but on a slight angle which made a squeaking noise. That mistake did eventually cause a second crack after a few months. If that is the case, use a small pair of scissors to detach the keys where the glue/breadclip has spilled over or spans the two key sections. You'll be able to see it clearly if you compare the key movement to an unrepaired key section. If the squeaking is coming from the repaired key, then that may be the case. Otherwise, I can only guess that the case was slightly misaligned when putting it back together. As for the grease, mine has so much in it that it would take considerable effort to remove it all. I'll assume that they all come out of the factory like that, so I can't see it being a problem. I hope that helps!

    • @corytoddmusic
      @corytoddmusic  3 роки тому +1

      If you're confident taking it apart, you might be able to see if there is something preventing the key from making contact with the electronics (for lack of a better word). At least you might be able to see if it is an electronic vs mechanical problem. If it is a broken electronic trigger/contact you may be able to find a replacement with some help from google and a soldering iron, but I haven't run into that problem, so it's beyond my experience to provide a concrete solution. If it is just a problem with key making contact, you could swap keys with a less used area of the keyboard - highest or lowest octave. I hope that helps!

He plays frequently throughout the day and he is a vigorous pianist 😏. We've had it for about 6 years. Does this sound like key fix/replacement is the solution? Thanks!

      Actually, I had this exact problem in the first year with my Yamaha. I spent a couple of days trying to figure out the problem. The solution for me was to adjust the sensitivity settings. I believe there are 3 different settings, here is the information on how to adjust it (very easy to do): usa.yamaha.com/support/faq/pianos/9516.html

    • @corytoddmusic
      @corytoddmusic  3 роки тому

      Karen, I'm afraid I don't know for certain how to fix that. I do know that the p-45 has, what I believe is called a "Switching Jack" for the audio. When headphones are plugged into the unit, there is a physical switch in the jack that interrupts the speaker circuit, so electricity get's cut from the speakers and diverted into the headphones. Is it possible that there is something still stuck inside the headphone port/jack? For example, I have headphones with the small 1/8" plug (like you might use on a phone) and in order to plug them into the piano, I use an adaptor for the larger 1/4" piano Jack. If it's not an adaptor still in there, then, if you have kids running around somewhere; it might be a ham sandwich, or literally anything else! :) If you can't see anything in there then you might need to replace the jack, but there's no way to know for sure from here. Hope that helps!

    Can a broken key like this cause issues with touch sensitivity I wonder? I've looked at the contact strip on mine and it seems fine, but key that occasionally barks at me for no reason is broken in exactly this way. Hoping this fix will somehow solve the touch sensitivity issue but that doesn't seem logical

    • @corytoddmusic
      @corytoddmusic  4 роки тому +1

      Thanks for watching. I had a good look at the white keys the last time I opened up the piano. The white keys are quite solid looking. I would try just tightening the screws across the the top of the octave segments. If that doesnt fix the problem, you would need to remove an entire octave segment, which is just a matter of removing the screws along the top of the segment, then gently pulling the segment toward the front of the keybed, then up and out. It is quite easy if you take your time. You would probably want to wear gloves, as there is quite a bit of machine oil/grease in there and it will get on your hands. Once removed you would be able to see any cracks. It's quite easy to do, and if required you can also buy new octave segments online You can also switch the position of the segments. Exchanging the lowest octave with a more heavily played one. I have done that as well, and it made a big difference. I Hope that helps. :)

      I haven't experienced that on mine. If yours is no longer under warranty, pop it open and see if it just needs a little cleaning between the keys. It looks like they apply quite a bit of grease during production, to keep the action smooth. So any thicker dirt, crumbs, sand etc. could easily build up in the greased parts and cause that scratching.

      Hi Alessandro, my p45 had an intermittently very scratchy c key, after a load of dirt got dumped onto the keys, I guess the vacuum cleaner wasn't able to suck all of it out.
      I followed this guide by Cory to open the piano and remove the key bed as he shows. I was then able to remove the one-octave span set of keys (white & black) that included the scratchy key by undoing the 4 screws that retain those keys.
      Once you have undone the 4 screws, you will see you can lift+slide those keys out of the key bed. Each key has a box like slot underneath it into which the tip of the corresponding weighted arm for that key pokes.
      I found that the box like slot for the scratchy key had ingested several bits of grit that had ended up mixed into the grease. I removed all the grease from the slot and from the corresponding end of the arm, and then applied some clean grease.
      Now I have re-assembled everything the key is butter smooth! Thanks for the great guide on dismantling the piano Cory :) Anyone can attempt this fix if they have a suitable cross-head screwdriver and take their time.
