Purple Rain is one of those songs with an incredibly powerful vocal that ends halfway through the song and the guitar has to take it from there and be just as powerful. No surprise that Chris was equal to the task. What an amazing performance.
I was hoping someone would do a breakdown of that solo. Could only dream that it would come from the man himself. Thx for this, really enjoyed the performance, the solo and learned a lot from it!
I know right, so lucky to have a player of this magnitude break it down.. ive gigged this tune many times and never got it down right ☺️ - dats next months practice sorted - thx Chris 🎸🌟
Amazing how he can be so in the moment with total awareness of the musical context. Music flowing out like a person having a great conversation with a new person!
Good God - that Purple Rain solo was so soulful, Chris!! I love your style - those little slurs are so signature and sound sooooo good. Keep on truckin'!!
I played purple rain live once in my life, for about 1,100 people. Needless to say i was terrified. Chris just breezes through with his own style. Even though he references here that he was under pressure, the performance shows incredible control. This gives massive inspiration to just chill and do your thing, people will enjoy it anyway. If something does go wrong, so be it, you'll be fine.
It truly amazes me how you are so expressive with your right hand and never lose that pick. Mine would have been halfway across the room within 5 seconds. Probably why I tend these days to play fingerstyle. And since I always manage to keep breaking my nails that means finger flesh style :D.
Chris, I love your down to earth approach to your life and music. You're a fantastic person and musician. Thank you again for sharing the raw soulful beauty in your playing.
Chris Martin was awesome I watched a couple vids on Miller it was great new for me but I have to say again you blow me away every time you play such style truly a pleasure thank you.
No diss on Chris (think he's awesome) but those chord changes in that song makes any good lead player salivate! Reminds me of the solo sections on Pink Floyds "comfortably numb" such a great section to solo over...endless options!! But that being said...Chris executes an absolute tasty solo! Great job Chris!
having improvised this live a few times, its one of those solos that it hard to not to not find yourself just doing what prince did . like when you try to do something different over comfortably numb, still got the blues ,sweat child etc your brain drifts to the originals as it hard to do anything better as they all nailed it and although princes solo is minimalist he is very good and sounding great with not a lot. but full credit to you , you made it your own . the difference between me other mortals and the ones that stand out ,that little bit extra that elevates you . btw i was there at the auction for that strat , but lacked the bottle too be sure it was what i thought , what i was told and what it finally turned out to be . but more power to you sonshine . last thing. if i have to do this live again i am going to rip you of .will give you a "thanks chris buck" at the end over mic .
I’ve been fallowing for quite a while . Man you’re trully amazing. Anyone can play guitar fast but with feeling and soul like you do .. on the other hand Martín miller. Another genius . Saludos de Suramérica !
I was lucky enough to see you guys in Mannheim and to attend to your masterclasses Chris! Great band Cardinal Black, and even greater guys! Looking forward to see you again in Germany. Cheers and keep on rocking!
Got out there and owned it, did a video and owned it too. Improvisation always works, none the wiser to any technical inaccuracies (I'd just call them microtonal notes). Reflection and debriefing heighten the level of the next performance. Spectacular performance! I Can see you are always working to the next level.
So funny you mentioned about the finger prints on the Black revstar, cause that was killing me! Hahaha. I wanted to enjoy the solo but my eyes were stronger than my ears this time and totally distract me from it. What to do put the phone down and not look at it while listening to your beautiful performance.Thank you Chris you are such a humble person! Admiration to you and all your musical work.
I truly love hearing pro's that are more widely known, talk about all the wild shit that goes down while making shows happen. The drinking then remembering you had a set is so relatable
From all the awesome things in this video, I think we can come to a conclusion, when Paul Davids is involved with you, there comes an awesome solo from your geinous. Great story, amaaazing playing and you set the benchmark for the Purple Rain solo 🙌🎸🎶🎶
I've legit been playing this cover over and over since the release. So I'm just super happy to see you talk about it. I hope one today I'm able to play even half as good as a Chris Buck that's a little buzzed😂💔
From your description of the situation regarding the beer before the set, well it sounds as if you got to experience a small taste of performing while touring in the 70s that some bands lived through. It also came with many other substances to influence your head while playing.
No way man, Ive been to Guitar Summit for the Cardinal Black performance and literally played that black Revstar on the Yamaha stand a few hours earlier. So apologies for the finger prints, some of them might have been from me :D
I had to pause the video at the "ass cheeks clinched" par,t as I was laughing so hard I missed what Chris was saying. In addition to being a fantastic guitarist, Chris seems like a really down to earth guy.
Ahh, beer. As the great Homer J Simpson said, "The cause of, and solution to, all of life's problems". Don't sweat it: you rocked it. You're the reason I have a Revstar. That'll be a few hundreds of quids, I'll expect a cheque in the mail, thank you very much.
Today I learned what's the prize for clicking from 999 likes to 1K: I get to listen to an amazing master class. Thanks for explaining your thought process.
Hahaha I’m so glad I watched this explanation of the solo. I had a similar experience with Belgium 9% beer but there was no guitar involved thank god. You did amazingly well considering. I blame Paul Davids for the flat note & sharp beer.
Great stuff, Chris - seeing that you're able to get such a great sound from the Helix/Powercab is it still worth using a pedalboard and tube amps when playing live?
2 things: I almost had to turn the video off because you were so self-effacing it was painful. 2nd, that is the most lyrical and soulful solo I've ever heard (I'm 71) - that it almost shouldn't be taught like it's almost sacrilegious. But after watching only 3 of your videos, I'll state the obvious: It's great to have access to a musical genius.
Great video and boss solo 🙂 I always watch the bass player if I'm not sure what key because the basslines are invariably roots of the chord and it's easily spotted onstage
Chris is nothing if not laid back and understated so when he says he’s never been so ass cheek clenched one has to take notice. But no worries as Chris killed the solo as he often does.
That minor third bend on the 22nd fret is a bitch, especially with 11 gauge strings! The bends sound great to me, but if they are just a tad short I wouldn't worry, it adds a bit more angst to the solo.
"at least we're in the right key, which is always a good start" - says on of the worlds best guitar players... conlusion: I don't have to worry no more... 😁
Awesome video man and thanks for the killer guest appearance. Gonna steal a few tricks for sure! 🙌
Purple Rain is one of those songs with an incredibly powerful vocal that ends halfway through the song and the guitar has to take it from there and be just as powerful. No surprise that Chris was equal to the task. What an amazing performance.
Such a hot guitar solo that my phone literally just burst into flames and I narrowly escaped with my life! Nice one Christophe.
this give me goose BUMP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! my man CHRIS
It gave you *one* goosebump?
I was hoping someone would do a breakdown of that solo. Could only dream that it would come from the man himself. Thx for this, really enjoyed the performance, the solo and learned a lot from it!
I know right, so lucky to have a player of this magnitude break it down.. ive gigged this tune many times and never got it down right ☺️ - dats next months practice sorted - thx Chris 🎸🌟
forget about pentatonics, start using the 4th and 7th
The way the tone projects through your fingers. Amazing man. Keep it going! 🔥
That beer story is hilarious!
I’ve listened to that purple rain performance so many times now… What a spectacular collaboration!
Oh man, that story is brilliant! Top work fella!
I dig how you weave a tale, sir.
I listen to this song every day! Perfect song and solo
Awesome improvisation, you nailed it....German beers and all. Thanks for sharing
i literally cried. god. awesome. RESPECT.
It truly amazes me how you are so expressive with your right hand and never lose that pick. Mine would have been halfway across the room within 5 seconds. Probably why I tend these days to play fingerstyle. And since I always manage to keep breaking my nails that means finger flesh style :D.
Such a gifted musician but teaching will become your passion, inspiration is your key note, God bless you on your sound healing journey Chris ❤
What a legend. So honest, so real, so relatable. Just placed an order for a Revstar.
Thank you Chris! Saved me the time transcribing. I took the liberty to transfer your tab to a Soundslice for those interested to learn!!
The long wait about this is over. Keep it up bro
Possibly the prettiest solo I think I’ve ever seen you play
You're amazing Chris! Please, came to Brazil with Cardinal Black!
Chris, I love your down to earth approach to your life and music. You're a fantastic person and musician. Thank you again for sharing the raw soulful beauty in your playing.
Completely brilliant, Chris. I'm buying a Revstar and cloning your fingers.
Thanks. For that solo, for this unbelievable lesson, for giving so much. Thanks.
The most beautiful purple rain solo i've have never heard....Good job
Chris Martin was awesome I watched a couple vids on Miller it was great new for me but I have to say again you blow me away every time you play such style truly a pleasure thank you.
For a minute there, I thought it was the price tag hanging off the guitar! Like always, awesome playing man. Nobody feels the guitar like you do!
God damn, just fantastic! All that with all that beer! 🔥
Forever indebted to Paul Davids for introducing me to your playing. Also love the Martin Miller template: killer band + killer guest guitarist!
Woh I get goose bumps whenever I hear Chris buck play

but full credit to you , you made it your own . the difference between me other mortals and the ones that stand out ,that little bit extra that elevates you .
btw i was there at the auction for that strat , but lacked the bottle too be sure it was what i thought , what i was told and what it finally turned out to be . but more power to you sonshine .
last thing. if i have to do this live again i am going to rip you of .will give you a "thanks chris buck" at the end over mic .
thx chris for breaking things down , awesome you take the time , really enjoyed it .... thx rock on
Man, you play with such confidence! Love it!
What a superb guitarist you are. Just amazing!!
Beautiful and intense playing
I’ve been fallowing for quite a while . Man you’re trully amazing. Anyone can play guitar fast but with feeling and soul like you do ..
on the other hand Martín miller. Another genius .
Saludos de Suramérica !
Such a beautiful feel and touch. You have to be Born with that. Im fully convinced now. It really is phenomenal playing.
I was lucky enough to see you guys in Mannheim and to attend to your masterclasses Chris! Great band Cardinal Black, and even greater guys! Looking forward to see you again in Germany. Cheers and keep on rocking!
Beware of the fake accounts guys
10/10 would listen again to Chris talk about grabbing a guitar that look like he'd just eaten KFC off it 5:55
just great yet again don't worry about the state of your guitar welcome to rock & roll Chris your the best.
You are always welcome in Germany for a couple of beers, particularly if they make you perform like that 🙂
how come I see this now and not earlier :D good work as always and it was nice to jam with you. keep it up!!!
Really good

Delicious tone on that rig
I truly love hearing pro's that are more widely known, talk about all the wild shit that goes down while making shows happen. The drinking then remembering you had a set is so relatable
Thanks, that was just THE BEST
TREMENDOUS interpretación !!!
You are an amazing guitar player and musician.
Tanks for this máster class
Thank you Chris!
Yes for sure.....
Damn that was straight up killer man, one of my fav solos.
really love this guitar solo 👍🏻🤘🏼
Incredible performance, just pure love and soul. Hope to see you performing some day live in Germany.
Great job👌👍👌👍
Nice to hear you mention Derek Trucks.
From all the awesome things in this video, I think we can come to a conclusion, when Paul Davids is involved with you, there comes an awesome solo from your geinous. Great story, amaaazing playing and you set the benchmark for the Purple Rain solo 🙌🎸🎶🎶

I hope one today I'm able to play even half as good as a Chris Buck that's a little buzzed😂💔
Buckmaster! You truly are the Gareth Bale of sweet guitar.
Cheers Chris i am sure Prince would approve.
You're a very very talented and hard working dude. A great inspiration
NICE tone!
Hell of a solo buddy!
Thanks for joining us!!
Thank you mate! Hope you're well :)
Nice one Chris........ Time for a beer, or 2!!!!
Played the solo at a dep gig last night
Thought I did OK till I watched this!
From your description of the situation regarding the beer before the set, well it sounds as if you got to experience a small taste of performing while touring in the 70s that some bands lived through. It also came with many other substances to influence your head while playing.

Greasy Chicken fingers no less hahaha
Cara, que solo incrível !!! Lindo demais !! Vou pegar algumas ideias hahah rsrs
The solo is absolutely brilliant, but the "How it nearly went VERY wrond!" section of this video absolutely kills me. Watched it 10 times I think
I had to pause the video at the "ass cheeks clinched" par,t as I was laughing so hard I missed what Chris was saying. In addition to being a fantastic guitarist, Chris seems like a really down to earth guy.

Beautiful solo...beers clearly put you in the zone...
Loving the Rise Up solo! Sign of a great band when the live versions are better than the album.
Today I learned what's the prize for clicking from 999 likes to 1K: I get to listen to an amazing master class. Thanks for explaining your thought process.
So my take away from this is if I drink 6-7 strong German beers I can play like this! 🤣
Hahaha I’m so glad I watched this explanation of the solo. I had a similar experience with Belgium 9% beer but there was no guitar involved thank god. You did amazingly well considering. I blame Paul Davids for the flat note & sharp beer.
W0W!
ФАНТАСТИКА , СУПЕР ЗВУК И ФИРМЕННОЕ ИСПОЛНЕНИЕ !
pissed, not sure what key there playing in then rips that solo what a pro! If I had 1% of your talent Chris I could die happy
Guitar God
I think most guitarists would be very happy to play that well, while buzzed and nervous.
Haha. Thank you very much! 😆
That a rolex he's rockin' on his wrist?
Prince is an underrated guitar player for sure. He could play quite fast and was technically very proficient which few people know at all.
Great video and boss solo 🙂 I always watch the bass player if I'm not sure what key because the basslines are invariably roots of the chord and it's easily spotted onstage
You don't have to degrade us like that explaining why the solo wasn't great when it was clearly epic 😂
LOL German beer can do that to you. Impressed with your resiliance.

i would wish you also made presets to hx effects line 6.
Chris is nothing if not laid back and understated so when he says he’s never been so ass cheek clenched one has to take notice. But no worries as Chris killed the solo as he often does.
How do you choose notes over a chord changes and melody of the song?
hi chris, greetings! what do you advise for guitar players to be confident live considering muscle memory
That minor third bend on the 22nd fret is a bitch, especially with 11 gauge strings! The bends sound great to me, but if they are just a tad short I wouldn't worry, it adds a bit more angst to the solo.
HO LEE CHIT…👍👍
"at least we're in the right key, which is always a good start" - says on of the worlds best guitar players... conlusion: I don't have to worry no more... 😁
I'll have seven of what your drinking mate :)
Yheaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
