The summer going into my junior year of college was rough. I had just got my first pro trumpet (Bach 180-37G) during the spring semester and had practiced hard everyday until my lips bled. Punishing my embouchure like that caught up with me and I ended up injuring my chops REALLY BAD. My endurance was shot. Every second of playing hurt and my sound was awful...worse than when I first started in 6th grade. That summer was probably the closest I had ever came to thinking about quitting trumpet because I was back to square one after 8 to 10 years of work. What did I do? I persevered and created this routine for myself to slowly build my embouchure back up. Everyday from June to August, I practiced only minutes at a time. Everything was played slowly and at a soft dynamic (at a whisper) until it was easy. This allowed me to finally figure out how to use my air efficiently and not rely so much on unnecessary pressure. By the end of the summer, my technique was better than ever! Now, I share this routine with you in hopes that it will help you improve your technique or help you get back into shape after a long hiatus from the trumpet. The exercises themselves aren't magic. They're pretty simple. It's the mindset behind it that will help guide you. So, practice these as soft as possible. At first, your tone will be unstable and airy. That's completely O-KAY. Think about a constant stream of air zipping through your horn like a soft beam of light. Strive to make that small sound have a stable core that doesn't waver in pitch/intonation. Carry that approach throughout every note and exercise you play in this routine. Everything is one big long tone! Good Teacher... thank you for the lesson, I have been at it for about a year, still trying to master scales. As a student trumpeter in my sixties I got a lot too learn. Again thank you.

Just saying you are an inspiration Terry.
Wow, thank you so much for your incredible channel. This is exactly what I needed!! Your lessons and exercises are so helpful and so much better than anything else I've seen online. So clear, well organized, and encouraging! I used to play in high school and you've inspired me to get back into it!! THANK YOU!!!!!
Hi, Lena and oldredm3 said it all for me! I haven't played in 40+ years. I didn't know "what" to practice. I can see your hand on the valves. Exactly what I needed! Thank you from Eastern NC. I joined Bugles Across America, to play taps at veterans funerals.
You such a great teacher, I didn't know a trumpet can be that easy to play once taught by a great teacher like you,am able to play with less difficulties after following your videos, am.aiming to become a professional trumpeter in 6 months from now.
thanks so much for this exercise, my tone and endurance has worsen since the corona pandemic, NOW THE TEACHER WANTS US TO RECORD A SOLO, hoping to back into the swing with this lesson
Hey! I just want to say you are such an AMAZING Help! I’m only in 6th grade band and your videos help me out so much. Sometimes, my Band Teacher even plays your videos because of how good they are. You’ve got skill, man! Keep it up! I know for sure I’m going to continue playing the Trumpet for a very long time. I’m interested in Jazz music. Man, that connects to you!
I played 10-12 years as a kid/teen but haven't played for over 40 years. Just started back up playing along with Chris Botti and Cindy Barkley. I love the videos as they put the physics behind it all which for me makes it easier. Not sure if my previous training had that. Now time to yank out the old Calicchio and practice some of these exercises! Thanks for the videos!!!!
This is a really good practice exercise. I am an adult beginner trumpet player. I am not really good at playing the trumpet. However, I love my trumpet and am very attached to it. I understand that it takes time and I am much better than I was a few months ago. I'm going to practice this video daily. Thank you for the video.
It helps to have a short routine for days, where you don‘t have time to practise 30 or 60 minutes. (And the video gave me motivation to get my trumpet out and play) ;) I would also like to see some more videos about improvising.
In a few weeks I'm heading back to marching band camp, gonna do these exercises to keep in shape for this season. These videos have really improved my endurance and helped with range, especially after getting knocked down a few pegs with braces. Edit: I also use these a lot for warm ups! Also edit: using these exercises to get back in shape after not playing for basically all of my Christmas vacation... Another edit: well after 3 years of braces, I've gotten them off...and i cant hit a C anymore. I'm probably worse now than when I was in 6th grade. Gonna use this video to get back in shape.
During this pandemic I havent played for nearly 6 months and everytime I play I always feel discouraged to continue because of how awful I sound, ill definitely give these practices a shot for the next couple weeks and hopefully everything will turn our alright. I'll be sure to update :) Also great video man hoping for the best of me.
great videos do you have a video where you talk about tuning and using the ring finger to slide out and tune the note with all 3 pistons are down? Thanks

Hi Aaron, this video is really helpful. If you get the time, please could you do another all rounder warmup/practice routine. Doing variations on these exercises on my own is fine, but it's really useful playing along to the video, because it ensures my pitch is correct. Thank you

I stopped practicing to focus on other things (huge regret) I’m currently with a C in my grades right now and I have only a couple more hours to redo the assignments. I’m struggling on an e flat scale, my range has always been terrible from the start when it comes to playing in the higher range. I can easily play lower notes which is the thing that’s confusing.
