JayS he was never a badass personally. He had Jesse do the dirty work. I don't think he slightly teared up rather than he just comprehended what he just said to his wife knowing that it was gonna make things worse between them.
Best part about this scene is that Walt really WAS the one who knocks. He was always the danger, because everyone underestimated him. Tuco, Jesse, Mike, Gus, Jack and the gang
John Smith at the time he was at his most vulnerable, he’s about to get his ass beat by Jesse and mike, get tased by Tyrus, and have his entire family threatened to be murdered by Gus. On top of that he also finds out almost the entirety of his money is gone. He does become the danger after he kills Gus though.
Dorian Gray those were indeed very badass moments for walter but that still doesn’t negate the fact that during this scene he is indeed in very hot water
It's merely brilliant how Walter takes off his light red shirt to reveal a darker shade of red symbolising a darker turn for Walter after the speech. Exceptional directing.
Yeah, paying attention to the colors is very important in this series. Walter White used to wear a lot of green in the beginning, when he was a nerdy, unhappy teacher. As he progresses and becomes more of an authority, he starts wearing redder, like when he comes out of the chemo and keeps the beard: he's wearing strong pink. In the end, he mostly only wears faded brownish colors. Skylar used to wear light blue. As the series progresses, she starts wearing more and more darker colors.
+Isaias Castillo The Sopranos was great, but Breaking Bad surpassed it. That's just a simple fact. I'm a huge fan of Sopranos, but it was more a pastiche and satirical look at stereotypical gangsters - Breaking Bad's brilliance was that it took normal people into the underworld and explored what happens in real-life crime.
It's amazing how well this scene communicates how much Skyler still genuinely cares for and wants to help Walt, and how terrible of a person he's become to speak to his own wife like that. I remember old Walt, and this is a different person.
lol. Skyler doesnt want to help Walt, she's just afraid. This is typical mother behaviour. She wants him to be a boring clerk with a save salary instead of a man with ambition and a purpose. But later in the show she'll hump him like there's no tomorrow. She likes bad boy Walt, but she cant be with him. The whole show is about Walt developing his character. He turns from a pussy to a bad boy and then, right before he dies, he finishes the journey by becoming the hero, admitting to his faults and arrogance and by saving Jessy. Moral of the story is to incorporate your dark side before it overwhelms you. Walt was a pussy for too long and then the backlash to his weakness overwhelmed him. So dont be a pussy, assert yourself when need be!
@@hanswurscht6625 Lol "a man with ambition and purpose" is a strangely deceptive way to describe a man who becomes a stone-cold killer and meth manufacturer.
@@SomeTomfoolery There is nothing strange about that at all. Ambition isnt limited to the things we like, it's an amoral concept. Ghengis Khan was certainly an ambitious man, but he also was a mass murderer. Lots of great men of history had questionable ambitions. But ambitions nonetheless. The fact that Walts ambition turns dark is important. Thats what happens with people who live a life too afraid to act. He could have had his shot at greatness with grey matter technologies, but he chickend out, took the save route and became a totally overqualified high school teacher. Then his resentment grew (see Eliots birthday party) and finally broke free. Thats a relateable story which makes Breaking Bad such a cool show. This scene with Skyler is the same. Its not just about Walt being a murderous drug dealer, this is what women and especially mothers are like. Pick the save route, do what I want you to do, be a good boy. Your reward is a disinterested handjob at your 50s birthday. Walt is a good boy and ofc he gets zero respect for it. What he did was right, he should have asserted himself a long time ago. If he had done it when it was appropriate, he might not had to overcompensate by becoming a drug kingpin. But he certainly had to break bad a little bit, cause he was a pussy who lacked teeth.
@@hanswurscht6625 The first half is pretty apt, but there's no world in which what Walt did was right. We could discuss what role his environment had in his making, but he's still ultimately morally responsible for the evil he did. And in what world do women not like men who are ambitious and successful? Those are the ones who best provide for their family. Skyler is horrified not that he's ambitious but that he's a criminal. Walt absolutely has the choice to become good and successful, Grey Matters willingly invites him in. But his pride leads him to his fall.
Yet, this iconic line is said when Walt is most scared and in fear for his life. So it’s all posturing, which escapes almost everyone because Cranston delivered it so well. The character is trying to convince himself he’s in control when he clearly isn't, thus why he shows a hint of fear at the end of saying it. He needs to convince himself he’s in charge so he overcompensates in the opposite direction, e.g. “I am the danger".
years after and this scene still gives me goosebumps. especi the wife’s reaction, you know she was truly scared even tho it was acting. Brian Cranston, everyone! one of the best to ever do it
I love how when skyler starts pulling at his pride, he takes off a red shirt to reveal a shirt that is an even deeper, darker red. This shows the pure evil in walt, he actually is a hardened criminal
I agree. His inflection on that last sentence is a little funny to me. I think if he had a few more tries or they chose a different take he could have made the entire comment like the "danger" part. Also I think they edited out some dialogue after the "Knocks". Watch it again and tell me what you think.
@@20TonChop ur saying one of the greatest scenes in tv show history needed "more takes"? it was perfect, the entire thing and im not just being a blind fan. Every voice tone, every look he gave, every hand movement he made was calculated down to the second by cranston and gilligan. And seeing as though you cant take the cranston out of walter white, a part of cranston is walter and when he was focused and tapped into his character he was flawless, atleast in the takes that made it to screen. Every scene has atleast a couple of takes even if it wasnt messed up, the director wants multiple options to choose from. This scene was chosen, this scene was perfect and I think trying to dismiss it and say it needs more takes in a couple of sentences is pretty misguided
One of the best things about Breaking Bad is that the creators knew when to end it. There no open ends or pointless character arcs unfulfilled (aka filler) by the end of the series. Everything that was shown played some part in the story. And that's how it should be. I'm looking at you, Dexter.
Thats acctualu what he was aiming for, he wanted to make a show with an end and not some bulshit going on and on and on that and having the protagonist become the atagonist was his goal when he was brainstorming for this show
This show is extremely overated, like the acting is perfect through all the seasons, but the story lacks something, it's so fcking boring only the final 2 seasons were averagely interesting but still not enough
in my opinion this is *one of* the best scenes in television history. incredible delivery from BOTH actors. incredible. the fact that i can watch this several times over the course of years and get goosebumps every single time speaks to that.
The show ended six years ago and the movie came out a month ago. Either way, it doesn't matter, you're the one on a youtube comment section expecting it to be spoiler-free. I still feel bad for you anyway.
hey i dont actually know the show, at what point in it does this happen? i was just wondering because after he gives his speech, he looks somewhat upset, he kind of pivots from being mad to almost looking a little surprised by himself, just wondering if that was right.
Fr man. It’s crazy how we saw him as a teacher and all that. Skyler saw that, she saw a sweet loving man, and when he said that shit, it shook the hell out of me. Heisenberg is a monster. Plus, I’m stoned and this scene still excites me lol
@@Straight2TheHeart i didn't say it was perfect but it's not that bad that people talks about yes the night's king death was horrible 8 seasons for 35 minutes 🤦 and cersi death scene was beyond ridiculous but over all it is what it is!
A lot of people don’t realize this isn’t meant to be a badass asserting his dominance, it’s Walt trying to cover up the fact that he fears that Gus has too much power over him.
I disagree. He had always been a stubborn proud man. Skyler saying he was in over his head really set him off. She injured his pride, and before he realized what he was saying and who he was saying it too, it was too late.
This might be the greatest segment in TV history. I know its fake, I have seen it 100x, I know each word before he says it.... But still each time I watch it I get chills. The way the work Knocks ends is epic. Omg did he nailed it.
Fucking absolutely, one of the, if not THE best scene in TV. Excluding all his other epic scenes in Breaking Bad. I love how well thought out the show is, and the acting, perfect, legit 100% everything is perfect with Breaking Bad. haha, *Has wet dreams*
I think what makes the scene so great is that rage like this can happen to anyone. Let's be honest, when we all reach that boiling point we just let our initial thoughts come over and we all just let it out, just like Heisenberg (not Walter white)... And then for Heisenberg to actually follow through by killing gus, and then telling his wife that he did, with pride no less... The scene truly speaks volumes.
I have to include the garage scene when Hank and Walt have their confrontation. That scene is brilliantly acted by both men! The emotions are off the chart, and when Walt tells Hank to tread lightly, the deafening silence after that is the only thing that could follow. I get chills every time.
It's the way he says the word knocks..it has the evil emphasis that he uses at certain times during the show..like yelling without yelling if that makes sense
Its Walter's own reaction after he says "I am the one who knocks"- He's taken aback and hesitates for a second, as though he realizes the sheer magnitude of what he just said. I agree that the entire scene is powerful, and without "I am the Danger" the scene would have been missing something, but "I am the one who knocks" conveys so much power and terror. Just look at Skylar's face, it's as if she's looking the devil right in his eyes.

One of the most bold, blood chilling scenes that American Television will probably ever see. Bryan Cranston is literally an artist with what he does. Nobody else could’ve pulled off the Heisenberg Role but himself. Absolutely remarkable.
I started watching Breaking Bad after GOT's ending because I needed to watch something good and solid. I have no regrets, I'm still finishing season 4 and it is fenomenal. It’s not the truth tho. Walt is extremely narcissistic and exaggerating his deadliness because he’s sensitive about being told he is very realistically in danger. He was begging for his life very shortly after JESSE was literally the one to knock for him. This scene is no doubt how Walter feels about himself but it’s not the truth.
@@Absurdword well she had the wrong idea. She didn’t know why Gale was killed. Because Walt was behind it all, he was the one who knocks in this situation. @@-xnnybimb-9398 She actually is 100% correct. Everything that she predicted and was scared about either happened before or after this moment. The cousins literally showing up to kill Walt with an axe? Getting exposed? Gus literally threatens to kill Holly with Walter on his knees. Walt is not the kind of danger that Skyler is scared of (at least at this point in the series) which is her point. He is in over his head.
@@Absurdword shes not 100% correct though, yeah Walt was in danger, but she had the wrong idea, and in the case of Gale dying, Walt WAS the danger. @@-xnnybimb-9398 I’m not talking about Skyler having the right or wrong idea about Gale - that has nothing to do with the reality of the situation. Reality is that Walt was almost killed and scared for his life even after he killed Gale and Gus was the danger looming over him. Sure he scared Skyler because he’s a liar and a coward but at this point he was undeniably in over his head and not anywhere near as in control as he said.

The scene itself is great. Walt turns into his Heisenberg alter ego because Skylar keeps questioning what has become his manhood. Walt spent most of his life being pushed around or told what to do or being undermined and generally feels like a failure, but by becoming a criminal he has finally achieved the wealth, power, and respect that has eluded his entire legitimate life and he has become proud of what he has achieved. He has seen a world where he is no longer a doormat or a joke, but someone who is admired and feared. Walt snaps at her because although he can live with Skylar criticizing his straight persona, he will not stand for her attacking the competence and ability of Heisenberg. The exact moment he switches is when he takes off his light red shirt to reveal the wine red shirt underneath. It's to symbolize he is still the person, but much darker and bolder than what is clearly visible from the outside. That he has become a "hardened criminal" and she is the wife of a gangster.

@@thahomiejosh9203 he already at that time sent Jesse after Gale, killed two Gus's dealers in cold blood

I could have whatched this scene a hundred times and not noticed that. Awesome!
Shout out to Channel Criswell's Colour in Storytelling video for pointing that out too :)

This is probably one of the best scenes in any TV show or movie ever.
That alongside "I did not hit her, I did nawwwwwt"
Oh hi mark
You obviously never seen the sopranos
you sound like a terrible person
+Isaias Castillo The Sopranos was great, but Breaking Bad surpassed it. That's just a simple fact. I'm a huge fan of Sopranos, but it was more a pastiche and satirical look at stereotypical gangsters - Breaking Bad's brilliance was that it took normal people into the underworld and explored what happens in real-life crime.
It's amazing how well this scene communicates how much Skyler still genuinely cares for and wants to help Walt, and how terrible of a person he's become to speak to his own wife like that. I remember old Walt, and this is a different person.
Ohhh man skyler never really cared like thay for walt she gave him a half bad jerky derfy on his birthday in season 1

Bryan Cranston could say "ohh boopity Doo lalala Dee. I'm a pretty little sunflower, look at me" and make it sound terrifying.

You're goddamn right!
amazing analysis
Also, notice the body language once he takes off his shirt. He goes from head bowed and almost submissive to tense, controlled, and assertive.
you know too much about Heisenberg, someone will knock your door soon
Good analysis!!
I think this is the scene where Bryan Cranston puts up his name as one of the greatest television actors ever. RESPECT
ironically enough a guy did open his door and got shot, but the one who knocked was jesse
Without Walt jesse would still add red chilly to his meth recipé
+meshal alnashri What?
But that happened before Walter said that to Skyler, and Walter knew that already.
