Boat Friends, this is a special video for you that has never been made public before, this is the first time. It was recorded on December 29, 2023, featuring one of the most beautiful and unique looking Great Lakes ships out there, this is one of my favorite ships. That pilot house is awesome.

Thanks Mike for the video. You are teaching a Texan about big boats. In Sept we spent 8 days on MN north shore and toured Duluth one day. Went to that observation tower you spoke of and then to the end of the pier opposite where you were. Really learned a lot about the history of shipping on Lake Superior.
Thank you so much for watching another ship video, I really appreciate your support. It’s always great to have viewers from all over, and I’m glad you’re part of this community. I hope you’re having a wonderful Wednesday and enjoying the day! Wishing you a very Merry Christmas all the way in Texas! I hope December 29 looks different this year. They are talking about snow tomorrow. Take a look at this forecast Donna. Tomorrow, December 19, 2024, in Duluth, Minnesota, expect heavy snow with total accumulations between 6 and 8 inches, and locally higher amounts in the higher terrain of Duluth. The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning in effect from midnight tonight to midnight CST Thursday night. Mike, we really have to take our time appreciating the ships. Had a certain point, I know it’s hard to say this, but we both know that these ships will be retired. I hope they have many more years to go though.
Thanks Todd, I really appreciate you jumping into the comment section. I hope you’re having a fantastic Wednesday. All the best to you and your family. Merry Christmas.
Mike, glad I found your videos. I first saw your Lake Smoke video a few days ago. We have property in rural Esko and will be moving there in a year or so.
Hi Mike, thanks for the video, checked the ships docket earlier and not much happening on the Lakes today, nice to see this beautiful day, too. Those houses on the hills, wonder how they handle icy roads....
I think it’s really amazing how the people who live up there handle those roads in the winter. I can’t wait to see these new ships that will be coming in soon. I will record them for you.
I'm so glad I came across your videos. I love Duluth but don't get up there as much as I used to. I live south of the Twin Cities. Never do I ever miss a trip to the pier when I am able to get there. I adore your videos and your commentary. And your coverage of the Golden Gate Bridge was stellar! Bless you - I hope you have a wonderful Christmas. 🎄🎅🏻
What a unique looking ship! And what a beautiful blue sky in Duluth! It's been a dull day, and is now raining where I am in the UK, so it was good to see some sun and blue sky! Great stuff 👍
What a beautiful piece!!! As always the walk around leading up to the Leitch’s departure was very enjoyable and one of the little extras I enjoy about your productions. This one had outstanding video quality as well.
Greg, I know many people go right into the ship, but I like to build it up and give a little scenery to give people a feel for the ambience and the atmosphere prior to end during the ship. It’s really fun to do that. I always appreciate a nice comment from youGreg.
Bob, I know what you mean brother, they’re talking about maybe 8 inches of snow in Duluth over the next few days. I’ll let you know what we get. I hope you have a great Christmas coming up, brother.
I really wish they would bring the style back. I did see a few modern ships that were built like this in Europe. I think they look so cool. I think you’d be able to see things a lot better, don’t you think having them forward?

Cracking blue winter sky in Duluth. Very nice day for ship watching. Such a cool looking ship with the pilot house & bridge seemingly rising straight up out of the lake! I was worried, I didn't think we were going to get a toot 🫡 as she was passing under the lift bridge 😬 As always, thanks for sharing👍
It was the most beautiful blue sky out there. I really wish I could see that every single day. The pilot house looks so interesting. What a beautiful vessel.
Enger Tower is a classic. I'm glad you caught it. Absolutely! I’m glad that you enjoyed the video. There’s going be so many cool things going on with ship soon
Looks like a Beautiful, sunny and cold day in Duluth. I would love a house on that hill side with a big window facing the Lift Bridge and canal to watch the ships, when I'm not at the canal. You can have your tv, I would be watching the ship traffic all day! You are right, the "Leitch" does look awesome with that tall Pilot house up front... Simply Awesome! Safe Voyage Leitch!!! ⚓🚢⚓
That's a great spot for a house! I wish I could watch ships all day too! Ken, there is talk about the ship actually arriving in Duluth in the next few weeks. I hope your Wednesday is going great. I really appreciate you. You’re always in the comment section being a good guy.
@@vibewithmike Mike I always look forward to catching your wonderful and educational videos that makes us at home really feel like we are there with you through your descriptions of the action taking place and through your exuberance... Thank you Mike!!! 🚢
I’ll tell you what’s cool, I’m learning all the time, I don’t know much about the maritime industry. I told you, I’m just a dude that hits record on the camera. I have learned many things, but there’s a lot to go. It’s really fun for all of us to learn together. I learned so much in the comment section with all of our friends.
There’s been a lot of speculation that this vessel will get scrapped. I really hope that is all rumors. I’ve only seen this twice. Departing in superior and this video departing in Duluth.
👍👍👍👍👍👍 Hi Mike. Thanks for sharing. The cloudless blue skies and bright sunshine watching the Laker " John D. Leitch" gliding smoothly over the calm waters today was a real treat. I hope you're enjoying the day while doing great camera work. ---Michigan
It’s one of the most unique ships out there. I hope it never gets scrapped. I know there’s been a lot of talk about it, but let’s just hope it’s talk. It has the most unique pilot house out there. I love this ship so much.
She is unique, a one of a kind. I hope I get a chance to see her in person next year. Glad you got to catch her for us. Thank you and Merry Christmas 🎄
There have been rumors about this vessel, being scrapped, I hope that never happens. Ships like this should be museum pieces. We are not going to have any more of them. We need to keep these vessels out. I love this pilot house. I like your profile photo.
@ I wouldn’t be surprised if Algoma scraps her. The Algoma Transport was a favorite of mine. Thank you. I’m just happy that these ships will live on through videos and pictures. I’m amazed that Algoma has kept her and the Tim Dool going all these years. Leitch built in 1967 and the Dool 1968. Great video of her though. 🥰
You are right, both of those ships are late 60s built. Videos, pictures, and all of those things that exist online will keep them connected to us. I just hope we get to see them a little longer than we think. I always say that the ships are history and motion, I really believe that.
Beautiful day in Duluth!! Awesome ship! That girl has a few years of hard work and stories under her belt!! Thanks again Mike! What you do for the boat friends community is outstanding! 👏👏
You have to admit, cruise is through the water really good. I love that color scheme and the cool pilot house, they call it the bank Doug because it has that look.
That is awesome to hear I will be looking forward to that I can't wait until you see the oberstar and you say the name Charles m beegley Thank you so much
Anthony, thanks for another comment. They’re talking about a winter storm in Duluth tomorrow. I will not be there but possibly 8 inches of snow or more could fall. That means it is looking like a real winter after all. However, with that said, I saw a possible upper 30° temperature so maybe all of it will go away.
Loving the channel- it’s a bit of nostalgia and it’s fun to watch! You do a great job bringing us such wonderful, informative and interesting videos! So wonderful!!

I believe the Minnesota Vikings have a strong chance to win the Super Bowl this season. With a solid team, great leadership, and a proven track record of resilience, I feel they can rise to the challenge when it counts most. The right combination of talent, strategy, and determination will play a big role in helping them reach the top. There is a part of me that doesn’t even want to talk about this. Charlie, it makes me believe I’m going to jinx the team. I just can’t believe how we’re doing. We even have a chance to get the number one seed. Thank you so much for watching the ship videos, I really appreciate your support. Be sure to keep an eye on the weather tomorrow, as snow is expected in the Twin Cities, so it could be a bit slippery out there. Stay safe and enjoy the winter weather! Merry Christmas to you and your family

I did hear about the Dool, I’m just so happy everybody is OK and safe on that ship. We both know that things are gonna happen in the maritime industry. It’s all about safety though. I’m glad that everybody is OK.
@ same here. I was kinda shocked it took so long to get her off. Luckily she got stuck in a river and not on a Lake. And one thing I learned about the Leitch recently was that her cargo hold was widened about 20 years ago or so. That would’ve been something to see!

We will keep our eye on it, at least you’re able to see it on this one to get ready if it does come. All the best to you on a Wednesday night, brother.
@ it really is an interesting ship and I heard that the pilot house was designed that way to maximize capacity! Yeah we will see but I hope so too! Hope you are doing well Mike!
The John D. Leitch is often referred to as “The Bank” because of its unique pilot house design. The pilot house has a boxy, rectangular shape that resembles the architecture of a bank building, which is why the nickname stuck. The ship’s distinct, almost “old-school” look stands out among other Great Lakes freighters, making it one of the more recognizable vessels on the water. This unusual design is part of what makes the John D. Leitch such a beloved and iconic ship. The nickname highlights both its functional design and the ship’s classic, enduring presence in the maritime world.
@@vibewithmike I didn’t know that thank you for that info! Hopefully it stays on the Great Lakes for many years yet!
Mike, we really have to take our time appreciating the ships. Had a certain point, I know it’s hard to say this, but we both know that these ships will be retired. I hope they have many more years to go though.
WOW what a beautiful Lady....Thank you
You are so welcome
I like what you do boat friend.
Thanks Todd, I really appreciate you jumping into the comment section. I hope you’re having a fantastic Wednesday. All the best to you and your family. Merry Christmas.
@vibewithmike You too Mike!

Mike, glad I found your videos. I first saw your Lake Smoke video a few days ago. We have property in rural Esko and will be moving there in a year or so.
Welcome! You are going to love it there in Esko. My wife is from there! It is a great place to live. What a beautiful, you left.
Cool! THANKS MIKE!
You got it, friend! I hope you’re doing great. thanks so much for watching all of these videos. You are great.
Watching while a winter storm is going on!
Definitely a winter storm happening in Minnesota
I'm so glad I came across your videos. I love Duluth but don't get up there as much as I used to. I live south of the Twin Cities. Never do I ever miss a trip to the pier when I am able to get there. I adore your videos and your commentary. And your coverage of the Golden Gate Bridge was stellar! Bless you - I hope you have a wonderful Christmas. 🎄🎅🏻
It was really fun recording a ship there in the bay area. It was beautiful. I wish I could do it all the time.
👍👍👍⛴️⛴️⛴️⛴️
What a unique looking ship! And what a beautiful blue sky in Duluth! It's been a dull day, and is now raining where I am in the UK, so it was good to see some sun and blue sky! Great stuff 👍
It’s definitely one of the most unique ships out there
I love this Ship, one of my favorites.
I really appreciate you watching another video. This was one of the funnest ones I’ve ever seen. I can’t wait to record it again.
Lovely video Mike. Great ship and beautiful weather. 🙋♂️👏👏🇬🇧
Glad you enjoyed it 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
What a beautiful piece!!! As always the walk around leading up to the Leitch’s departure was very enjoyable and one of the little extras I enjoy about your productions. This one had outstanding video quality as well.
Greg, I know many people go right into the ship, but I like to build it up and give a little scenery to give people a feel for the ambience and the atmosphere prior to end during the ship. It’s really fun to do that. I always appreciate a nice comment from youGreg.
Good afternoon Mike. They say calm before the storm. We have snow, rain moving in overnight, tomorrow and Friday. Have a great evening
Bob, I know what you mean brother, they’re talking about maybe 8 inches of snow in Duluth over the next few days. I’ll let you know what we get. I hope you have a great Christmas coming up, brother.
@vibewithmike 8inches not to bad. I will have a great Christmas. Mike, you also have a great Christmas. Thank you
⛴️⛴️⛴️⛴️⛴️👋👋👋👋🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄
Mike this is my generation …the deck hands berthed in the forward section! Thank you so much for the memories…..
I really wish they would bring the style back. I did see a few modern ships that were built like this in Europe. I think they look so cool. I think you’d be able to see things a lot better, don’t you think having them forward?
That ship looks like it means business. Very cool.
It’s a powerful beast. Gorgeous ship and a gorgeous day for filming. A crisp day. Thanks Mike ⚓️🚢
It was a crisp day and it was great to be out there!
great looking ship. Almost a summer day. Thanks Mike
It sure was a beautiful day! Thanks for watching!
Thanks for pointing Enger tower out. Lots of childhood memories there.
Enger Tower is a classic. I'm glad you caught it. Absolutely! I’m glad that you enjoyed the video. There’s going be so many cool things going on with ship soon
Brilliant video
Danny, I’m glad that you liked it
Looks like a Beautiful, sunny and cold day in Duluth.
Looked like a beautiful day on the bridge! Enjoyed watching the John D. Leitch on its way
Roger, one of the most beautiful ships out there
Great video Mike! I get to see the Leitch at Zug Island quite a bit. Definitely a cool vessel!!
---Michigan
Glad you enjoyed it. I wish every day was like this.
I love the Leitch! Totally one of a kind ! Great job Cap and Crew!!
@@vibewithmikethat is very interesting. I love how each ship definitely has its own unique personality.
This one definitely has its own unique style and look. That pilot house, it’s something else Doug.
She’s so beautiful. I think this is the first time I’ve seen her, but I felled in love with her ❤
I’ve only seen that beautiful ship a couple times
This is cool!
Dave, hope you’re doing great. All the best to you, my friend. It’s wonderful hearing from you.
This is a special release, I recorded this a while ago, but never released it. It’s a special ship.
That is awesome to hear I will be looking forward to that I can't wait until you see the oberstar and you say the name Charles m beegley
Thank you so much
I will do it for you
Stay warm and I hope you have a very merry Christmas
A very merry Christmas to you as well
Great Video I enjoyed It Thanks For Posting Mike Have A Great Night😊
Anthony, thanks for another comment. They’re talking about a winter storm in Duluth tomorrow. I will not be there but possibly 8 inches of snow or more could fall. That means it is looking like a real winter after all. However, with that said, I saw a possible upper 30° temperature so maybe all of it will go away.
Loving the channel- it’s a bit of nostalgia and it’s fun to watch! You do a great job bringing us such wonderful, informative and interesting videos! So wonderful!!

Pat, you have to admit this is one of the most beautiful looking ships. Some people don’t like how it looks. I think it has that look where it is so unique. You just have to love it.
@@vibewithmike Oh yeah - I think the view from that bridge has to be simply awesome!
Absolutely, I hope they have an elevator to get up there!😂
That is a unique configuration! Glided out so easily! Thanks, Mike!

She's one of a kind.
A total one-of-a-kind
Beautiful (but chilly) day for freighter watching. Thanks for the video of this grand lady. ⚓️

Beautiful day for you, Mike - practically a heat wave! Too warm for the Boat Friends Snowman, I guess.
You're right, it was a nice day for this historic ship to depart Duluth! Might be a little warm for the snowman
Thank you as always. I played the video over the phone for my father, who enjoyed your narrative and information. Hearing the boat horn makes him smile.
That’s wonderful to hear. The pilot House on this vessel is so unique. I really enjoy seeing it. Say hello to your father. I hope you’re doing great as well.
Such a cool video, Please keep it up!

What a wonderful old vessel.
That’s absolutely beautiful Noel, I hope I get to see it many more times. It’s getting old.
Nice
It was so fun checking out this shit. I hope it keeps coming back. Unfortunately, there’s a rumor that it might get scrapped. I hope that’s not true.
She has such a rugged look about her!
I love that ship. I hope I get to see it again. We might get a lot of snow tomorrow. Take a look. Travel could be very difficult, impacting both the morning and evening commutes.
Love the Leitch!!! What a great video!!!
Thanks so much! I hope you enjoyed the cold weather video, It was pretty intense. I hope the family is doing great. This was a while ago. I recorded this take a look at the description.
@@vibewithmike oh yeah I recall watching it leave on the cams. Definitely enjoyed the video and I would have been standing there with you! All is well here and hope you and your family are also!
There’s a possibility it still comes in this year, but I wanted to release this just before the holidays to make it fun. Get ready for any videos in a row here. It’s going to get fun through the end of the year. I have a lot stacked up.
Great video...luv the Leitch...thanks
I'm glad you enjoyed the video! This ship is so cool. It just has such a different look compared to everything else.
I hope we get to see the Leitch come into Duluth soon again.
That’s one of the most beautiful ships ever. I love your profile photo! You’re legit ship fan. I really appreciate you taking time to leave a comment. I wish you and your family a fantastic Christmas.
Another very cool video. This is the first time I have seen this ship. She has some pretty good lungs too. Thank you.
They called us the bank, Lou, it’s such a cool ship. They call at the bank because the pilot house has a bank look from a building standpoint.
My first visit to Duluth was back in 2017 and this was the first ship I saw

Thanks for sharing Mike just getting over a bout of Flu 🤧
I know a few other people that have been sick recently, there’s definitely something going around
Love the unique look of this ship! Glad you captured it my friend! I hope you have a wonderful and Happy Holidays!
@ I feel you there!! Feels too good to be true. We will see what happens!
But of course! I’m glad to support you in anyway I can! You have brought many HOURS of joy this year. Thank you for all you have done, and all you will do. I will be hunkering down and staying inside to avoid the cold.. better that way! Lol.
I hope it’s a white Christmas but they’re talking about upper 30s next week in the Twin Cities. We might see Grass again.
Must be getting cool out there on the big lake these days… well done Mike..
This is such a cool ship. I love how it looks. And it cruise is pretty good in the water.
Great video Mike! Appreciate you sharing it with us. Thank you for all of the great live streams and videos you do.
Jeff, you know I love getting out there with the ships. We are expected to have a pretty decent snowstorm in Duluth. However, I will not be there. There should be some cool ships coming through. I hope you’re doing great. I wish you and your family, a fantastic Christmas brother.

I can't say why, watching *Leitch* leave harbour was very moving. Fair winds and following seas.
Steven, I know exactly what you’re talking about! There’s a combination of things, I think it’s the history, the uniqueness, and just knowing that we’re not going to see this vessel forever. They’ve been talking about scrapping it recently. I think it’s a beautiful ship. It’s moving to me as well and many others. Did you see this one from yesterday that I posted? ua-cam.com/video/7NzQ5ER9rjg/v-deo.htmlsi=kwg_gw4bhVP_wyYI

Thank you for sharing! She is such a nice looking ship! I hope I can get a chance to see her one day! And I hope she keeps sailing for quite a little while yet. Did you hear the Tim S. Dool was finally freed?
I did hear about the Dool, I’m just so happy everybody is OK and safe on that ship. We both know that things are gonna happen in the maritime industry. It’s all about safety though. I’m glad that everybody is OK.
@ same here. I was kinda shocked it took so long to get her off. Luckily she got stuck in a river and not on a Lake. And one thing I learned about the Leitch recently was that her cargo hold was widened about 20 years ago or so. That would’ve been something to see!
I wish I was closer where I could record a lot of of that going on when that was happening
@ there were a few people on Facebook who kept people up to date and it was nice. It would have been nice to see you do it too! Have you ever seen the Dool?
I have never seen it in person. It’s the one that I would love to see. 100%. I would record it for you.
