how lucky are we that the punch brothers exist, every one of them would b the best individual player in any other band. so talented sometimes i hear one of their songs and i think to myself theres no way they could actually a song so complicated live. then theres a video where they do it effortlessly
Are you kidding me?? Steve Martin is sick on the banjo!! He's the man!! He's been playing banjo for such a long time...I think the banjo was even apart of his first acts as a comedian...
On top of that, Steve Martin awarded their banjo player 50 grand for being the best in the world, judged by Martin, Bela Fleck, and other great players.
God they're SO good! I love Bluegrass, and the Punch Brothers- each one of them is so incredibly talented. I recently saw the documentary about them, How to Grow a Band, and thought it was so cool to have an inside view of how they work together and the struggles they had starting out. Awesome doc about an amazing band.
The cool thing here is a bunch of young, very talented musicians are able to bring 'fairly' traditional Old Time American music to a national audience! And I love their take on the traditional tune.
@0109RGM Steve Martin is playing with the Punch Brothers... Chris Thile has been known as a phenomenal player with his days playing Nickel Creek... The song they played is the Punch Bros. song "Rye Whiskey"...
Steve Martin is SHOWCASING them. Thanks to his fame and considerable skill on the banjo, not to mention his ability to compose (listen to Rare Bird Alert cd), fine banjo players like Pickles get on Letterman. Considering that he IS playing with and DOES play with the best (Steep Canyon Rangers are also darn good), I'd say he does rather well for being 67 and playing banjo kind of as a vocation. Chris Thile, otoh, was BORN to play mandolin.
Chris Thile plays everything from Radiohead to Bach, and has played duets with Doc Watson and Chet Atkins among others. He's pretty impressive in his mastery of his instrument on so many levels.
I chanced upon Chris checking out The Praire Home Companion where he appears to have stood in for Garrisson Keller. What a thrill to hear his music.! x
some family friends of mine have a cottage on the same lake as steve and they can sometimes hear him from all the way across the lake!! amazing banjo playerr
Actually yes he is. He won a championship when was around 13 and has been recording professionally since around the same time. On his album Deciever he plays THRITY NINE different instruments and as Steve said he won a MacArthur genius grant.
Epic, music especially with Steve on the Banjo I remember watching this live when Steve gave Noam the award for being top banjo along with the fifty thousand dollars. Great night Indeed, as always. With the TPB.
Lots of people who clearly do not appreciate talented musicians. Chris Thile is a musical genius...Steve Martin is a very excellent, prominent banjo player. SMH, go back to your bands who need autotune to sound decent.
Yep, that's Kris. I have known him ever sense he got out of High School. Best mandolin player on the planet, period. Kris owns a Grammy. How many do you have? He has a gold record. How many do you have?
@foxfireman188 LOVE IT !!!!! MAN I wish I could play SOMETHING !!!!!! It is great to see somebody who has been playing as long as he has STILL get into it that much.
I came here for Chris Thile of Nickel Creek, of course, but I know a bit about Steve Martin, the bluegrass artist, playwright and author, more actually than I know about his acting (before my time, really), so I love him for being versatile!
Is Steve playing clawhammer banjo here? For some reason I always thought he played Scruggs style, but I guess I was mistaken? Anyways, love Gabe's harmonies on this tune.
They are sooo good! ...and with Steve Martin nonetheless. I haven't seen a more enjoyable group effort since the Boss and Wallflowers years ago. In fact, this may be better.
I just discovered this band through their cover of the Cars, and I was mesmerised! I've never liked this style of music in my life, yet I can't stop watching every video of them that I come across. Could someone please tell me the name of my new favorite song?
is this the guy from nickle creek? 'the lighthouse tale' sent my musical interest in different directions and i landed on this video. maybe i wasn't looking hard enough, but i didn't see steve martin. should i watch again?
@MrStitches123 Steve Martin has been a banjo virtuoso for a LONG TIME; the Muppet Show is the tip of the iceberg. If you said that in front of Chris Thile he'd probably respond that THEY were the ones who "didn't belong" on that stage, but that it was very kind of Steve.
Punch Brothers are just UNREAL. Incredible talent. ALL OF THEM.
Chris Thile is a genius. Literally. He won a MacArthur Genius grant in 2012.
kidalex77 That’s a big deal. Pretty amazing. Thanks.
how lucky are we that the punch brothers exist, every one of them would b the best individual player in any other band. so talented sometimes i hear one of their songs and i think to myself theres no way they could actually a song so complicated live. then theres a video where they do it effortlessly
Larry Raley Noam is the best banjo player in the world and Chris is the best mandolin player to ever live.
100% better live, they let loose and play as old souls.... So damn good
Love it. I've always been a fan of Steve Martin, but WOW Chris Thile, what a voice!!
If you ever get the chance to see punch brothers live. Don't ask questions just do it, they sound even better live
Why?
Buckhorn Cortez because Chris Thile is actual magic
@@buckhorncortez They're the best. That's why. I've seen them 3 times and Chris Thile (outside of the band) another 3 or 4 times in concert.
Are you kidding me?? Steve Martin is sick on the banjo!! He's the man!! He's been playing banjo for such a long time...I think the banjo was even apart of his first acts as a comedian...
These guys always put a smile on my face. Nod to Steve Martin on banjo.
On top of that, Steve Martin awarded their banjo player 50 grand for being the best in the world, judged by Martin, Bela Fleck, and other great players.
Craig VanRemoortel it wasn’t best in the world. It was for excellence
Anderson Cooper is killing that banjo.
I think I saw Paul almost smile there.
ljm792 Heh! Part of me hopes not somehow.
ljm792 i
They throw in an extra half beat or something in there. Timing stuff always makes the bass players smile hahaha
Steve Martin... what a legend.
The cool thing here is a bunch of young, very talented musicians are able to bring 'fairly' traditional Old Time American music to a national audience!
And I love their take on the traditional tune.
Some of the best musicians on the planet.
@0109RGM Steve Martin is playing with the Punch Brothers... Chris Thile has been known as a phenomenal player with his days playing Nickel Creek... The song they played is the Punch Bros. song "Rye Whiskey"...
Just saw the Punch Brothers last Monday.. Steve Martin at the end of the month. Loving Detroit this summer.
I've seen Steve Martin play before, but I didn't know he was working with Chris Thile. That was awesome.
Anyone else in love with the bass player's devilish grin at 2:45 ? Good lord I love this performance
Andrew Basinski I’m in love with the fiddle riff he plays in unison with Thile resulting in the devilish grin at 2:45.
Saw the Punch Brothers for the first time at Wolf Trap with Bruce Hornsby. Can't get enough of them - outstanding!
If you don't like bluegrass, just wait till the next song and Thile AND PB will play a whole nutha genre, any genre!
he is. hes just holdin back to serve this particular song.
Refreshing when bands have talent these days. Cold glass of water in a desert ;)
Love the two banjos driving this song on! Excellent!
I can't say who's the best because they're so integrated that they're the perfect unit! But I love Gabe and Pickles!!!
im from Argentina and the Punch Brothers r incredibles! love to listen this music
What a thrill to hear his music.! x
steve martin is god of all

some family friends of mine have a cottage on the same lake as steve and they can sometimes hear him from all the way across the lake!! amazing banjo playerr
And the guy on the left looks exactly like Steve Martin.
Steve Martin is playing banjo on stage. He's pretty prominent. Martin is a very accomplished banjo player.

Edward Nethery wilcher....

Wow, Wow, Wow this is music....
Yeah, and that banjo player on the left looks JUST like Steve Martin!
Lots of people who clearly do not appreciate talented musicians. Chris Thile is a musical genius...Steve Martin is a very excellent, prominent banjo player. SMH, go back to your bands who need autotune to sound decent.
That's one tight band! Steve looks somewhere between OMG I'm falling off! and What! I'm the Big Star here!
Too funny! Love Love the band.
Bahahahaha. Thile is incredible! Also, if you told Steve Martin that he is a more talented banjo player than Noam Pikelny he would laugh at you!
"Just What I Needed"
Yep, that's Kris. I have known him ever sense he got out of High School.
Best mandolin player on the planet, period. Kris owns a Grammy. How many do you
have? He has a gold record. How many do you have?
Charlie Kelly on Violin! 🤣
@TheBoyFromNorfolk yes he was :) seriously the best mandolinist in the world!!! love him!!
Chris Thile!!!
@foxfireman188 LOVE IT !!!!! MAN I wish I could play SOMETHING !!!!!! It is great to see somebody who has been playing as long as he has STILL get into it that much.
if you're wondering what this song is, it's called rye whiskey
I came here for Chris Thile of Nickel Creek, of course, but I know a bit about Steve Martin, the bluegrass artist, playwright and author, more actually than I know about his acting (before my time, really), so I love him for being versatile!
Is Steve playing clawhammer banjo here? For some reason I always thought he played Scruggs style, but I guess I was mistaken? Anyways, love Gabe's harmonies on this tune.
just caught what Chris Thile's foot stompin when he plays reminded me of - John Hartford. He couldn't stand still hardly & play either.
I've already seen both of them, but I agree that anyone that has not should check them out.
"Oh but rye thoughts....*HUGE EYES*
you ought to check out some of his other videos. he does some crazy stuff. his work with nickel creek was also really groundbreaking for bluegrass
@59arnemann YEPP!
Bahahahah! Cant...stop...laughing
They are sooo good! ...and with Steve Martin nonetheless. I haven't seen a more enjoyable group effort since the Boss and Wallflowers years ago. In fact, this may be better.

Could someone please tell me the name of my new favorite song?
WishkersMeowl
This is Rye Whiskey off their second album.
Hold up. Steve Martin and Chris Thile at the same time? Awesome!
Whiskey and rye
Who knew Jude Law was such a talented mandolinist??
man Charlie Day can really play the fiddle
is this the guy from nickle creek? 'the lighthouse tale' sent my musical interest in different directions and i landed on this video. maybe i wasn't looking hard enough, but i didn't see steve martin. should i watch again?
Yall it is Chris Thile from Nickel Creek not jude law
btw Steve Martin is wicked w/ the banjo
LOL
i wondered if i was the only one who noticed it. I'm sure he's playing up that look!
@MrStitches123 Steve Martin has been a banjo virtuoso for a LONG TIME; the Muppet Show is the tip of the iceberg. If you said that in front of Chris Thile he'd probably respond that THEY were the ones who "didn't belong" on that stage, but that it was very kind of Steve.
for a different side of ChrisThile , go watch him with YoYo Ma and The Goat Rodeo Sessions, (Here and Heaven) , it's also a great cd
fairterr Franz and the Eagle is my favorite :)
why is charlie kelley playing fiddle?
@ubershredder1989 have you seen any of the interviews with him? he seems like a nice guy
@CaitlinAnnLester
Awesome, I thought I recognised him.
Chris Thile looks just like Jude Law
Go listen to "Ode to a Butterfly" by his old band Nickel Creek (especially from 1:50 to 2:40) and then cry yourself to sleep.

steve martin has looked like he was 60 for like 40 years...

I didn't know Jude Law could sing
#moresingingbyCritter
Search the Chris thile NPR Tiny desk recording and then re-evaluate your comment. You'll thank me.
I'll take "Things That Don't Suck" for $1000 Alex!!!
Are you kidding me? I'm from europe and even we know that!
Whats this song called?
.....see chris thiles great classical playing please D:
Idk if Late Night was ready for prog bluegrass
Hey wasn't that dude in Nickel Creek?
*HEUGH*
The leader singer reminds me of a mix between Morrissey and David Byrne. Also I'm not from the 80s.
@MrStitches123 let's see your banjo playing, buddy
