Remember-Harris needs a solid blue congress to get anything done. Local elections are just as vital as national ones, they often include House and Senate seats. Keep up with your state and local elections and vote in all of them
"Do Nothing" Congress does nothing. And Republican politicians should be called "The Party of No". Harris will have to do everything with Executive Orders.
I really feel that Americans have no idea what Christian Nationalism is like to live in. Ireland was a Christian Nationalist country and what happened to Irish people especially working class women & children is beyond belief and we are still grappling with it. We have mass graves of babies thrown into sewers - some alive at the time - because the mothers were "unmarried" and put in laundries. Other babies were taken from their mothers and given away or sold. Many children were put into "industrial schools" and were molested, raped and beaten. Divorce wasn't legal until the mid 90's. My mothers friend died from treatable cancer in the 80's because when she was diagnosed, it was discovered she was pregnant, and the doctors could not legally treat her. She died a week after her baby was born. Contraception was banned. IVF was banned. Women who had difficulty giving birth were given symphsiotomies to break their pelvises leaving them in intolerable pain for the rest of their lives. I could go on and on. All of this was carried out by the church working hand in glove with the government. For the sake of your beautiful country, please vote blue, Much love from Dublin...the gay marriage capital of Europe were people can be free to live their lives 🥰😁💖
Your words ring far too well for those who choose to hear them. Unfortunately the MAGA party want exactly what you've described, and if they can't win then it's war in their eyes. I've been fighting against trump since 2016 and this is the big one. I fear for my country and the people in it, thank you.
The heartbreaking impact of Christian fascism, like extremist religious movements of any kind, is that it hurts everyone but those in power (the church and government) by appealing to peoples morality with fear because religion teaches you to fear before it ever gives you strength. It appeals in the same way folks who fall for propagandist ads about queer folks like myself, as if there haven't always been queer people, painting us as new, and a 'movement' vs a population demanding to have equal rights to marry or date other queer adults without restrictions or targeting policies. They teach it's immoral, but their reasoning never considers real people, empathy or understanding. They don't care about their own people either, as you pointed out when those extremist laws began affecting people. It's just fear mongering, and that works more than messages of building community, or at least it did. Now people want something positive and hopeful, not doom and gloom. And Kamala brings that respect for Americans, and real hope for better. She would be a real change, and I am excited to see it.
Not being American, I did not realize that Vance is a New Catholic. Having worked in the Catholic Church in England for 22yrs knowing how right wing the Seminaries have become here, this lady is so correct, Catholicism has gone so far back to the old ages. My mantra is , you cannot judge others, only God can judge. Vance is judging others. Especially us old women with cats……we are not witches.
Thank you for your perspective from across the pond. We Americans need to hear from all who have actually experienced some of these trends in real life. Best wishes to you and the kittys! 🙂
Of all the craziness and stupidity in UK politics I'm so glad that we haven't had much of the religious craziness creep into the mainstream. Maybe the Tories will go that direction while they stew in opposition for a few years (hopefully decades)... time will tell
Forcing people to be Christians is un-Christian. Conservative "Christians" are not Christians at all, they are simply bigots who have warped and twisted their religion to try to fit their bigotry.
This was probably my favorite and most informative interview I’ve seen in a while! Please bring Laura back as a regular! I am fascinated, confused, frustrated and scared equally about what’s happening with Republicans right now. This helps me understand their motivations and movements a little more. It always seems boils down to fear and hatred. I think we’re all in some sort of post traumatic state and it’s terrifying to see people using this vulnerability to spread fear and division.
None of these ideas are new. They are, in fact, very, *very* old. American democracy is the new idea. It has endured only because we’ve remained committed to it. We must do so now.
Certainly not new. You can see vestiges of the anti-Masonic movements of the Washingtonian era, including the fear of global elites. However, I have my doubts whether Trump is at all versed in the intellectual underpinnings of movements or whether the masterminds like Steve Bannon and Navarro are just using him and his ego to further their cause.
IKR??? It boggles the mind hearing people trying to "explain" the obvious in such a long round about way. The "New Right" are the "Old Right", they just put up a different smoke screen for people who want/need plausible deniability to agree with their ideas/ideals in public.
Essentially 5 of the 9 Supreme Court Justices are neck deep into this new right philosophy. That's very clear. Thanks for this very good and informative show.
You MUST BE MORE STUPID really she talks to people like they are in KINDEGARTEN.. That's why she won't do any PRESS interviews.. Just like Biden THEY COVERED HIM UP FOR YEARS
Excellent discussion. I hope Laura Field will be invited to contribute to future conversations. Thank you for all the lively banter, thoughtful commentary, and insight.
I honestly didn't want this interview to end. We need to understand what this extreme right is thinking more and why and all the questions. I so badly would like to go way more in depth on all this. I feel it to be a true threat to the lives, rights and freedoms of literally every one of us who is not a very wealthy cis white male; 99% of us or greater basically.
Why don't also take a look at the extreme radical marxism that these two want to foist on the entire world? Oh, yea. The only radicals are on the other side. Suurrreeee
Great show. Ms. Field’s explanation is eye opening. I feel the right is angry that for so long they told themselves they were on the top of the hierarchy bc they had a traditional family and now others are taking that away from them by having other types of families and not hiding away in shame bc of it
"If you are used to privilege equality feels like oppression." They would really like to keep their percieved superiority and their privileges of always being the preferred person in the room.
God loves all God forgives all these evangelicals are not the only people who believe in their Religion! Stop 🛑 ths we are a multicultural nation and that goes for families freedom and equality and religion and marriage and birth control rights. We must keep the Trump sycophant republicans out of office for decades until they learn how to legislate bipartisan solutions. We are a country that needs immigration. Wake up right wing nut jobs!
Its a nice explanation, which we see often. It also feels good because it allows us to look down upon and to mock. If it happens to be false, however, it can turn into a ridiculising force, similar to what we see reflected back in pop alt-right channels. And I don't think that will be constructive. Look, I'm no US American, so I do not get to care too much. i just want to say: I think it is a wise idea to consider worrying about whether this actually describes real people to the point of checking carefully. I'm Dutch, so I actually mean the literal words. If I had wanted to say "You are wrong, do it" I would have said so.
However, it is a lie because Trump has no "traditional" family or family values. He has been married three different times and has children with three different women. It was no secret that he also had multiple affairs committing adultery and has committed sexual assault. I could go on and on but sure Trump and others in their "alternative facts" world get a pass because they believe they are so much better than others. This is out of hand. They want and need to tell everyone else how to live, though. Enough of this. Vote Blue Big Time💙
The left has been saying that since like 2015. The second Trump announced his first run and started calling Mexicans "grapists" we started correctly calling him a bigot. Liberals just started saying it.
Just go with substance. Biden/Harris created inflation (Biden lied about this in the debate inflation wasn't high when he took office) and exported in Globally. They created high crime, high gas prices, high illegal border crossings and high grocery costs as well as endless wars. The democrats are the party of war that haven't focused on domestic issues whatsoever. Kamala is no different to this. Whereas Trump was the opposite, no wars, low inflation, low crime and record low unemployment. You don't like his tweets, poor you. Poorer still is your pocketbook under the Democrats.
Jon, your guests are knowledgeable, well spoken, and interesting. You make a few good points, ask great questions, excellent summaries, and then let your guests speak.
WOW you will parrot anything told to ya.. SAD COME UP WITH A REAL ARGUEMENT LIKE HAIRBALLS NO EXPERIENCE NO BRAINS NO LIKEABILITY HACKLING LAUGH and DUMB
Nuance. Trump isn't an intellectual conservative. The fact that those who are, know that a flashy egoist is the perfect front man. They give Trump what he wants, money and fame, and he makes choices that benefit their goals.
And last time he was president, you can find those decisions all over his "politics". He's been doing it all along. the only thing they can't really do (which is the ONLY thing that makes him not inheritently evil in my eyes, just a narcissist with daddy-issues and a lack of intelligence) is that he'll not always do what they want. And that he can turn on them on a dime. Problem: they know that already. So they might have an idea what to do about it (then again, his bedfellows clearly didn't anticipate Biden stepping down and Kamala taking up the scepter, so I'm not sure they are as intellectual as they think they are)
Laura is soooooo dang intelligent. You can tell she was holding back even more information because she needed to stay on topic. I bet she could have talked on this subject for hours.
Wow. Super interesting and thought provoking. Laura Field has a refreshing analytical depth and I could listen to her for hours. Thanks John for introducing her to me and having such good questions.
Yeah, this stuff isn't very popular with normal people. The problem is that normal people don't actually think any of this stuff can happen. Normal people are... lets just say naive.
They said Roe would never fall & we said it would; we were right. Voting matters. Now, they are coming after birth control. Just like some of us said! If young people don't intend to be in extreme poverty with ten kids each- just like the depression, they better vote their hearts out.
@@5amiann Paul Ryan said when he was speaker of the house and the push for a national $15.00 minimum wage that "the majority of Americans need to become accustomed to a lower standard of living" It will be like the late 19th century again.
Oh yeah, suuurreeeee. Normal people want their kids mutilated, and taking hormones before they're 10 years old, without their consent. Foorrrr suureeee. What weirdos would oppose to that, right?
I cringe when I hear people say that Trump is funny or he is intelligent and has a plan. Trump’s psychopathy precludes that he is funny or intelligent. At the moment he is a useful idiot for the Leonard Leo crowd and that is all. He lives as a candidate for the GOP for no other reason.
@@sumpoosieguy Better check your facts. He inherited a large sum in the 1970s. Some financial analysts have asserted that he would have more wealth now if he had just placed his inheritance in mutual funds
This is helpful and provides great insight. I have been scratching my head since Trump came on the scene. I couldn’t imagine that his chaos and incompetence would appeal to any logical businessman. Thank you so much for this sobering assessment on these radicalized factions.
What a beautiful and sober discussion about the issues on the right. I love jokes about the right and needling them, but having this kind of discussion really helps me to get a more solid position on why I'm upset by the "new right". Too often, I my reactions become knee jerk about what's happening on the right since 2015-2016. It's helpful to talk about the facts and the history of how this segment of the country came to blossom at this moment. Thanks, Crooked Media!
The problem with this stuff is how incredibly *uncool* it is! Do we really wanna live like a bunch of religious old fogies? The world before rock n roll? Seriously?!! F this crap!
Absolutely! They have always been there. I find it a little frustrating when people try to say that there is something "new" with any of this. I feel like people are just becoming aware of something I have been confronting for decades.
@@sumpoosieguy No...what you want back is when it was behind closed doors along with Domestic Violence, Child Abuse, Incest, Rape, alcoholism and yeah, gay stuff. We are not going back. Just live with the fact that people actually know when men behave poorly. Because ya'll put it on the internet
Donald Trump is steaming full speed ahead towards the second biggest disappointment of his life, when this happens the whole World will give a collective sigh of relief. None more so than the GOP which will then have to examine its values and rebuild as a viable political party for the future without Trump. Trump has wounded the reputation of the Republican Party and it will take a long time to recuperate.
The problem is Trump and his followers won't except getting defeated in the election. They are already saying that the election is only legit if they win
I think calling them "intellectuals" is a bold misnomer. The denial of science, the refusal to self-reflect and assess their own biases, and the abject disgust toward forward progress precludes them from accurately wearing that label.
I don't think she meant "intellectual" to mean smart or even logical, just that there is a genuine somewhat coherent ideology behind it. This was useful for me to understand it's not just about the cult of Trump, but that there are ideas and real grievances that need to be unpacked and challenged in order to persuade people away from the movement.
This times a million. Don’t let them hijack the “value of human life” talk because of their abortion stance. We have to take back that fight as ours and not be afraid to point out that they truly believe that so many people are lesser than. I would wager that more people know this is an issue than are willing to say and would love to see it said out loud in messaging.
It’s simply a blatant lie. They don’t care about the value of human life. If they did, they would be pro common sense gun reform, anti capital punishment, and pro universal health care. They wouldn’t be letting women bleed out during a miscarriage.
Fascinating discussion. I learned so much. Scarier than I thought. I did not understand until recently that there were a lot of people who just did not believe in and do not want to live in a democracy. It’s been a shocking revelation.
He's given the old fashioned conservatives a taste of their halcyon days and they've gone for it. There's lots of reluctant moderates on the right- they'll tell you if they think you're one of them.
I fear we are only a bad election away from a new round of Crusades lead by a religious body (the Roman Catholic Church) that thinks itself to be superior to EVERYTHING.
Yep, and they've always been around, surprisingly including the Catholic Far Right that even pre-dates the Evangelicals. Had a brother-in-law like that, who was fervently against *_any_* form of birth control... even though his wife, with several failed past pregnancies, was warned by doctors that another one could jeopardize her life!
Yeah, he wants to assist people who have kids, by NOT providing child care or child tax credits, FIGHTING to reject paid family leave, come on now. They do not want to support families
Ah, but there you find the next (for them) logical step: prevent contraceptives, make certain unmarried women are shamed for being unmarried and voilà, instant "perfect world" for them. What control would you have over your body when you are more or less forced into marriage?
I understand and respect your perspective. We all have our place in this project, and I affirm yours!! ♥️ After a lot of soul searching I chose to have a child directly in spite of our broken system. She is affirming my choice by blossoming into a wonderful, loving person - as I believe all kids will given the right conditions. It’s also been truly amazing to have found a community of like-minded folks who have made the choice to have kids, knowing that our children will go ahead of us and continue the fight for a just world for everyone. We are all going to make this happen together.
@@frizzlethecat2084 LoL This isn’t the past. Pretending freedom doesn’t grow people will not help confront modern women. We are not the women you’re looking for.
@@frizzlethecat2084 That's exactly how it was when I was leaving high school in late 50's. If a woman wasn't married by 20, she was on her way to being an "old maid"... plus no dependable birth control, etc. Lucky for me I was hell bent on going to college in spite of numerous attempts to have sand thrown in the gears. I guess deciding how to live one's life as one pleases as long as causing no harm to others is considered way too "woke".
Glad to listen in on that enlightening conversation. It shocks me when extremists wish to impose their perspective through violence & power grabs. It has me shakin' in my boots some as a church goer who believes in inclusion while deeply respecting church tradition. State mandated religion was what many of our forefathers came here to escape. The separation of church & state (and the practice of democratic values) actually protects our freedom to practice religion as deeply as we wish.
For what it's worth, if we don't ALL (you CAN both-sides THAT issue) commit to getting money out of politics, we will continue to be at the mercy of people like Leonard Leo, Koch brothers types, that weird Mellon guy, the Mercers, and various members of the billionaire class. My Lord, she is brave to study surrounded by these frightening people. They think of themselves as intellectual giants; I grant that they are not stupid. @@catholicpog7183No. Non pluralistic pursuits. Selfish pursuits. Existential framing like you've done are destructive. In my world we coexist. You've already decided I have to conform to your arbitrary spiritual inventions. Religion has always been a source of conflict and a way to rationalize evil which is why the modern world with secular governments is the highlight of human achievements and cooperation. Keep your religion in your pants.
@catholicpog7183 Being on the other side, it seems like you don't understand the progressive position on culture and "fragmentation." We're finding that this is a big universe and traditional religion provides very little to help understand something so vast. Fundamentalist religion narrows this much further, unable to account for the size of the universe and the timescales in which things take place, rejecting facts in favor of that "glue" to comfort the isolated individual. It is more likely that an individual navigating these frameworks will rely on "selfishness, exploitation, and hatred" - after all, they're fighting for their eternal "soul." Humans don't have an innate capacity to consider geologic/evolutionary timescales. As a society, we can rarely effectively plan the next few years. As a species, we SHOULD be planning for the next hundred, thousand, or even million years. These narrow views of life and these strict definitions of what it is to be human need to be replaced or we are likely to destroy any possible futures in which humanity might have a place. Diversity lends itself to survival - it's literally the only reason we exist at all.
@@catholicpog7183 I have studied religions too in school, and I was brought up in the Catholic tradition, which I eventually rejected. Certainly, religions bring about a set of shared beliefs that can make a society more cohesive. However, in a society where no one can deviate from this religion, the order comes from subjugating the population to the whim of a minority, i.e., Church elders/religious authority. It's a theocracy in practice, if not in name. Sure, you get some sense of cohesion because people have no choice not to, and this conformity comes at a high price for many of its members, usually women and children.
It's striking how quickly the GOP abandoned traditional patriotism and love of the constitution that it hammered us over the head with my whole life (i'm 66) to embrace medieval patriarchal theocracy with almost no internal debate, the nevertrumpers notwithstanding. I think the paltry debate in the GOP was the product of a realization that trump was the only guy who can win the WH for them. And trump is instinctively drawn to their authoritarian misogynistic racist perspective. It's one thing to stand athwart history and cry "stop," it's quite another thing to insist on reversing history against its powerful current.
Historians are going to point to the election of Obama for two terms as the catalyst for gutting voting rights and allowing unlimited amounts of money to pour in to campaigns. It took about 10 years before they were ready to dispense with democracy altogether.
Thats why Vance was picked - to shepherd Project 2025 through until completion. That's more important than any of the negative things Vance said about 45 previously...
I enjoyed hearing about the belief systems of the “New Right.” I don’t have to agree with them, but I cannot dismiss them either. It’s important to understand the “why” behind their ideology, and how essential it is to vote this November. Thank you for having this Offline episode.
This is a very real and depressing conversation, which should motivate anyone with love for the USA to get ready for a real fight beyond just November.
Nah fr because I’m like this is literally the same shit they’ve been on for damn near 50 years, this isn’t a shocking revelation. Anybody that was actually looking or anybody that has been discriminated against by this philosophy could’ve told you this. It’s bigotry, greed, and Christian nationalism *gasp* who would’ve thought. Just because they have more think tanks now and there’s literature didn’t make this completely non understandable. Like if you’ve been taught about Andrew Jackson a bit (Trumps fav president coincidentally) you can understand populism and how you can splash that with conservatism and boom

She is a political scientist, whose analysis unwittingly gives substantial credit to Vance… However, she contradicts herself by depicting Vance as someone influenced by far-right radical ideas, "like a teenager easily indoctrinated," which may not make sense for a Yale graduate who formerly challenged Trump's political beliefs. On the other hand, self-interest might explain how he changed his worldview to attain power and prestige.
More Laura Field, please! This was the best, most intellectually honest discussion on politics I’ve seen in ages. Since I’ve been watching/listening to you guys for years, the only explanation is that having an ACTUAL Intellectual on the show matters. 😉 Seriously. We need more Laura.
Laura...is....wonderful! I thoroughly enjoyed this classroom with her as the professor ! I did already know a lot of the things that were discussed but it's extremely helpful to have them confirmed. I hope this becomes a learning experience for many people so that we can save democracy.
This was a really fascinating discussion. It's easy for a lot of us to just mock Trump's insanity. But it's instructive to have some understanding of the deeper currents that prop up MAGA. One day, hopefully sooner rather than later, Trump will be a bad memory. But we'll still have to continue resisting these reactionary forces Glad Jon had Ms. Field on the show.
What's utterly confounding, about the extreme-right, is that most of their ideologies are antithetical to what our country's founders envisioned and designed. (i.e. separation of church and state, checks and balances in government, etc.) Our founders FLED Christian-nationslist, autocratic places that were harming, and oppressing, people. (Not that American colonizers didn't do the same, but that's a separate conversation.) We were founded by progressives. Every freedom we have exists BECAUSE of progressives. Imagine how far our country could've advanced, over the past 9-years if Trump had never entered the political scene. (PAUSE.) Instead of fighting extreme-right-radicalism, we should be focusing on GROWTH. 🤦🏻♀️ We're falling behind country’s to which we used to be THE prime example in terms of progress- STEM science, medicine, innovation, sociocultural advancements, etc. It breaks my heart that our collective children may be raised in darker, less progressive, times than we were. For the f***ing love of democracy, vote blue down the line, this election. 💙
As a Christian I feel like my walk with God is between me and God. I teach my daughter my beliefs and how I expect her to behave in & out of my presence. I don’t put my beliefs on people. I have so many friends who believe differently than me and that’s ok. I find the super religious people to be fake and most hypocritical people in the church. Usually these people worry about what everybody else is doing instead of worrying about themselves. That’s what the Republican Party reminds me of those kind of people. They talk about people being gay while laughing at Paul Pelosi being hit with a hammer. I find that very hypocritical. They talk about the non traditional marriage. While cheering on a three time divorce man who spreads evilness & hate. It’s nothing Christian about that. Jesus is not pleased but that’s just my opinion🤷🏾♀️
You are not alone. I was raised Catolic but in the 80s watched the Christian churches all start shifting and taking on more extreme politics. It has been horrifying.
Nobody's talking about isolation and loneliness as a 21st century phenomenon especially post-Covid19, along with continued employment insecurity and displacement from technological change. There is uncertainty about roles particularly male roles in pluralism. So you have disaffected people like JD Vance who have identity issues especially from his gay period, and his social displacement from a difficult family, and you have a great and urgent need to belong. This is underestimated as an emotional pull and the fact it's the driver for this conservatism and the need to be a hero of sorts. The other thing is Trump does not discuss policies, but the left doesn't explore this at all. The reality is Trump is talking to everyone in his 'flock' like a confidant, he's entertaining them and letting them in on the joke. The whole thing is a sort of fireside chat, and people have this emotional bond it's entirely illogical but it's real.
Yes, this "being a hero" in a hollywood sort of way by swooping in when some "bad person" threatens your family instead of building a society that produces less criminals is very US-American. They can feel incredibly good about themselves saying "I would make this bad guy remember this day for the rest of his life if he insults my family!" thinking that this is some mature respectable way to think and talk.
@@anthill1510 Thanks yes there's a fantasy life operating beneath the surface and that's a constant. So people go into a hyper-real state if someone triggers their fantasies. It's why people are so celebrity-focused, it's as if they're living a half life and they need a celebrity to inject them with something life-affirming. That's how I see Trump he's part mythological figure and very larger-than-life comforting to anyone wanting to belong, just park your brain...OK!!! .Fittingly he was almost killed by yet another disaffected person wanting some fame, anything to break the monotony of ordinary life and mediocrity. The kid was highly intelligent but rejected by society and bullied. It's like the shadow of Trump, he's got a lot of afflicted things in his subconscious mind a lot of fear. The interesting thing is he's projecting a false self. This is why he's so threatened by an authentic high intelligence individual like Harris, who is also capable of engagement, humour and spontaneity. This is a nightmare for him and he's literally trapped.
They are crusaders steeped in self righteousness and he's their fuhrer. He makes them feel powerful and seen. They don't even consider broader consequences of relinquishing their own power to dear leader. They also see politics as a conflict and not a compromise for policy so winning is the only goal. The idea of winning becomes it's own utopia in this way of seeing politics. Not worrying with voting is like a weight of their chest. The battle is over.
"Reintegration of Church and State" is the key to this lady's analysis. The Catholics didn't like the French Revolution and want the Pope to "anoint" the elected (or not) leader. Look at the Catholic Court, look how the brightest on the Right are taught at Jesuit schools. The more things change the more they stay the same. Ya gotta keep telling yourself....... as science brings man more tech and biological crossroads the harder it is for religion to provide a framework to see the future. Todays Right can't cope.
Re staying the same, Biden was true to his word, not only did he not change anything he made things worse, take your pick, inflation, gas prices, grocery prices, illegal border crossings, wars, it's a long f'kin list
I think they're developing that framework. The entrenched powers are hijacking science to develop a post-liberal techno-theocracy that caters to money, promotes ignorance as a value, and demands subservience. My fear is that progressives, because we don't have a clearer view of what the future can be, will be unable to fight for that future. We'll always be on the defensive and we'll inevitably cede ground over time. Diversity and science will be stamped out.
This episode only cemented my believe of Kamala Harris's VP to be MARK KELLY. He would represent a modern alternative vision of what MASCULINITY can be in the 21st century. A caring husband, father, accomplished career as a pilot in the NAVY🇺🇸, a man of science as an engineer📎 and Astronaut🛰

Thank you for sharing this heartbreak. It's important to shine the light on the forces that are trying to sneak into power in America.
It sounds 100x worse than handmaiden’s tale!
It is.
The Puritans were considered extremely weird centuries ago as illustrated clearly by Hawthorne. Organized religion isn’t what it’s cranked up to be.
The social extremism of this new Catholic crowd needs to be continually discussed. Thank you for doing this interview.
Yes it was one of those "can't miss a single word" shows for me.

None of these ideas are new. They are, in fact, very, *very* old. American democracy is the new idea. It has endured only because we’ve remained committed to it. We must do so now.

Lobbyist still own the Gov. sir/mam, so US democracy is artificial. It's like a TV show.

It boggles the mind hearing people trying to "explain" the obvious in such a long round about way. The "New Right" are the "Old Right", they just put up a different smoke screen for people who want/need plausible deniability to agree with their ideas/ideals in public.

Its a nice explanation, which we see often. It also feels good because it allows us to look down upon and to mock.
If it happens to be false, however, it can turn into a ridiculising force, similar to what we see reflected back in pop alt-right channels. And I don't think that will be constructive.

35:41 As an Australian where voting is compulsory, the idea that 'the leader of the free world' still has voting rights as a significant issue in the 21st century is mind boggling to me.
JD stands for 'just disgusting'
I appreciate this nuanced conversation. Thank you both.
💙Such a good interview Thank you!🇺🇸
Loved Laura. Please have her back soon.
This interview is SUBSTANCE! Thanks for this.
Fantastic interview! Very insightful deep dive. Thank you!
Don "OLD's" racial profile needs to be looked at. Is he white? Is he bronze? Is he orange? Or is HD tri-racial?
Exactly, They tried everything on Trump and He still WINS THE HOUSE IN ATLANTA WOW Check that Rally out.. NOT FAKE like Harris
Half German, half Oompa Loompa
Just go with substance. Biden/Harris created inflation (Biden lied about this in the debate inflation wasn't high when he took office) and exported in Globally. They created high crime, high gas prices, high illegal border crossings and high grocery costs as well as endless wars. The democrats are the party of war that haven't focused on domestic issues whatsoever. Kamala is no different to this.
Whereas Trump was the opposite, no wars, low inflation, low crime and record low unemployment. You don't like his tweets, poor you. Poorer still is your pocketbook under the Democrats.
This is a small thing, but whoever did the blocks graphic at the very end, great job! That's so cool!!
28:43 I disagree. If they were wanting to help even just cis families they’d do something to help cis families. You’re giving them too much credit.
You’re 100% correct. Right-wingers are not interested in helping _any_ families. They actively vote against and relentlessly undermine any social structure to assist people in having happy, happy families.
She is a political scientist, whose analysis unwittingly gives substantial credit to Vance…
However, she contradicts herself by depicting Vance as someone influenced by far-right radical ideas, "like a teenager easily indoctrinated," which may not make sense for a Yale graduate who formerly challenged Trump's political beliefs. On the other hand, self-interest might explain how he changed his worldview to attain power and prestige.
@@fabster1378 If Vance IS sincere in his new-found beliefs (which I still doubt), there is nothing more fanatical than a new convert.
More Laura Field, please! This was the best, most intellectually honest discussion on politics I’ve seen in ages.
Since I’ve been watching/listening to you guys for years, the only explanation is that having an ACTUAL Intellectual on the show matters. 😉
Seriously. We need more Laura.
Seems a bit more like ‘New Reich’
Sounds about white
Laura, you opened my eyes. It was bumpy at first but you know of what you speak WRT the theocratic right. TY!!!
. 🧹💙🧹💙🧹💙🧹
Nobody needs to be voting split ticket, people need to vote a straight Democratic ticket.
Laura...is....wonderful! I thoroughly enjoyed this classroom with her as the professor ! I did already know a lot of the things that were discussed but it's extremely helpful to have them confirmed. I hope this becomes a learning experience for many people so that we can save democracy.
one of the best evaluations of the ultra right I have heard. balanced and thoughtful
(i.e. separation of church and state, checks and balances in government, etc.)
Our founders FLED Christian-nationslist, autocratic places that were harming, and oppressing, people. (Not that American colonizers didn't do the same, but that's a separate conversation.)
We were founded by progressives. Every freedom we have exists BECAUSE of progressives.
Imagine how far our country could've advanced, over the past 9-years if Trump had never entered the political scene. (PAUSE.) Instead of fighting extreme-right-radicalism, we should be focusing on GROWTH. 🤦🏻♀️
We're falling behind country’s to which we used to be THE prime example in terms of progress- STEM science, medicine, innovation, sociocultural advancements, etc.
It breaks my heart that our collective children may be raised in darker, less progressive, times than we were.
For the f***ing love of democracy, vote blue down the line, this election. 💙
Great guest!
It’s F’ING religion.
I really enjoyed this discussion. At first I was sceptical but she was very thorough and I learned a lot.
I do not understand how Usha Vance fits into this strange realm of going back in time to white, male patriarchy.
I feel for that woman!
Forward not backwards! ❤🤍💙
Excellent guest. She’s studied this properly and puts it in perspective of intellectual history of the right.
🎉🎉 Church and State is a bad idea --- Religion has no business in politics period.
You've got it twisted. Politics has no business in religion.
The American People must know about this! Thanks for spreading the word!
Well said!
The answer to the isolationism isn't forcing people back to church 3 times a week!
FRIEND OF THE UNION🌹✊
Hillary called us
"A basket of Deplorables"
Kamala calls us weird..
How dare they both be
right!
Too funny!😂
Kamala calls Trump and his people weird, not voters.
Nice explanation.
Excellent. I learned a lot. Prof Field is a gem. Congrats to the Pod for going deep.
can we just call fascism by its name instead of making euphemisms like "new right"
Its not new.
They are blood and soil fascists that want an army of crusaders. That's why they obsess over breeding. Friggen weirdos.
And, can we just call radical marxism by its name instead of making euphemisms like "democrats". It's not new
@julianlabrador7755 as someone with socialist policy goals, I find the characterization of the democrats as Marxist to be very very funny.
What an amazing interview. Thank you!
I’m really excited for Stacey Abrams’ new podcast! ❤
Laura, you are really great. Beautiful and soft and almost soft spoken; but fully engaged and knowledgeable about your field of study.
Another brilliant redhead (!)
Great discussion, thank you. 🎉
(Frightening, but great!)
