I moved to Austin earlier this year from Denver because I got into grad school at UT. It’s expensive here. Property taxes are high. Housing isn’t cheap, and the culture is indistinguishable from Southern California. I don’t plan on staying here. I think I’ll move back to Colorado after school. It offers a much better quality of life, in my opinion.
My wife and I are proud democrats and native Californians born and raised. We just recently relocated to Texas for obvious reasons- specifically that Republicans and corporations have ruined our great state. So we branched out and moved to TX and so far so good....Texas is not as racist as everyone said it would be, so that's a plus. We are both college professors...she has a job lined up now at a local college, I will likely start teaching high school for the time being. Happy so far, we'll see how this goes!
“Don’t California my Texas”.. for real though, many of the Californians moving to Texas are conservatives yet the media makes it seem like it’s all liberals.
I lived in Roseville and he’s absolutely right the prices are double in that area in comparison to Austin TX where my friends currently live....sorry Dave this young man is NOT exaggerating!🤨🙄
It’s about half for me and I’m not in Silicon Valley. I own a $1.4M home in Irvine, CA and can get the same sq footage in TX for $700k in a nice neighborhood.
I hope all the people who are looking at home in Texas, especially near Austin will not just look at the home price but the property tax. The Austin area has one of the highest property tax rates in the nation. You will not save as much on a home as you think you will, moving from California to Austin.
I'm part of that statistic. My wife, baby son, and I just moved from San Diego to Tulsa OK in Nov since I couldn't find any more work there, but I found a good tech job here.
It's not bad! We obviously miss the beach, but I'm mainly happy to have found a job and being to move into a nice house right away and bring our housing costs to less than half has been nice. Everyone here has an accent and I'm still not used to it.
@@andrewwhitcomb4857 Yeah, I can imagine the accent would be a different twist to life. I'm in the San Francisco bay area now, but lived in Pacific Beach ("PB") for 5 years. The bay and ocean were a mile away from the duplex we rented. Awesome weather down there!
I am a Realtor in Sacramento, CA. Not all of us are leaving California. This state has a ton of great things going for it, especially the weather. Every state has its pros and cons.
For moving out of California, Texas is not in the list with such insane property taxes. I mean California property taxes are not cheap, but are better than other states. While it is true that texas has no income tax, in the end is kind of the same thing as California where is expensive. I don't understand how they can pay such insane taxes for buying a house that is cheap. But, if it's for renting I imagine that is cheap. Maybe?Either way,, I don't think moving from cal.
Even Dave, who purports to hate California, admits all the good tech ideas and companies emerge from Caliifonia. Dell is Texas based, but that's an anomaly. Apple, Facebook, Google, et al: Californiia. They like having a big presence n Texas because of the MCOL and the lower taxes. (Rent Control, Strict Zoning Regulation, City Council Approval Boards, etc....) The reason why people moved to California in the past is because it was cheap back around 1970-90, it attracts businesses and thus attracts people. The state flipped from red to blue in 92, there had been a solid foundation set for people and businesses to continue to move there. The escalation of bad policy by California in the years since is now reaching a tipping point and will destroy the state. silicon valley will be the modern day Detroit in 20-30 years, empty warehouses(offices) everywhere.
Here in Long Beach CA, houses are going for 700k+. And these are typical, 2 bedroom houses, with a decent back yard but nothing really crazy. There has been so called consumption tax (VAT) proposals to replace property tax, but certain interests don't like the idea. Many large businesses currently get huge tax breaks to locate in Texas, there is a possibility that others avoid significant taxes because of special deals. In theory a VAT would eliminate the backdoor exemptions. Gov Greg Abbott said the consumption tax is the way to go in a Tweet, but that's a far as it goes. Most of the VAT proposals exempt groceries prepared at home, rent, fuel house payments from the tax to make it less regressive. No editorial writers have taken up the consumption tax, probably because no specifics of how a VAT might function in Texas have been proposed. A bill proposing a VAT was introduced in 2021, but it never got out of committee. To some the VAT is an ideal means to get large corporations to pay taxes that they now avoid, to others it is the Mark of the Beast, a potential tax on every transaction.

The mass exodus out of California is definitely real.
Don't mean to be mean, but Roseville is way overkill. Ya'll don't have beautiful weather, beaches or mountains . Maybe only the jobs and demand are supporting the high prices, what happens when either of the two drops? Nothing to support, watch out below
