As someone who relates so much to this song, watching this analysis feels like my skin is getting peeled off layer by layer. The juxtaposition of wanting to be close to someone yet in a far distance shows loneliness, desire and insecurity. Being exposed to people gives you a chance to find comfort in them and build possible relationship and intimacy, but it also gets you into a state where you’re more likely to get hurt. So the protagonist might just wants to hear people’s voice but still remain in their comfort zone(room, a place reserved just for themselves). Venus destroyed by people wanting too much: I view this as the protagonist’s realization that harmony can be perturbed by desire. And in this case, the desire to feel loved and in love. The protagonist may see the destruction of themselves as a result of their (unfulfilled) desire. The protagonist knows no one will save them and probably no one even understands them. So they don’t crave anyone to understand them, since they are quite aware of their own problems. They just want someone’s physical presence near them, which might not be the best solution to tackle the problems but can temporarily make the protagonist feel alright at least once. Feel like a coward: lacking the courage to do things to get themselves out of the lonely state Movie kiss: Movie is among the things that shape our desires by putting into our heads the ideas of what love is like. And we’re unaware of the process or how it influenced us. One’s idea of a good pure kiss might come from a movie. But at this point, the protagonist is not interested in figuring it out. They just want something immediately that can ease the loneliness and the pain that comes with it. Big and small: Love and desire can give us intense emotional rollercoaster ride. It makes you feel so good about yourself, and next minute it’ll make you feel so bad and weak. Final word NO: I view this as a abrupt stop that doesn’t necessarily mean any possible solution or positive turn. The protagonist is very well aware of their loneliness and have probably been through these emotions and even breakdowns numerous times (so that they are able to describe it in a sober and specific literal way). The last ending NO sounds to me like the protagonist suddenly realizing that this breakdown time is getting over (as the repetition pace slows down and calms down) and that it is time to pick up themselves and do other things in life, with the possibilities that they may return to the same routine to experience this breakdown again and again. In all, what the protagonist craves in this song is not a “healthy” solution that can solve their problem for good, and there might not even be such a solution. Instead, what they repeatedly want is to feel “alright”, the bare minimum to carry on, from time to time, to crave for someone’s physical company or a kiss, just to temporarily feel good. It also implies that they will go through the same circle over and over again because this hollowness and need are not going to cease. They will only be strengthened after attempts to “feel alright”. Thank you again for your interpretation. My thoughts are above and open to any discussion. :)
thank you so much for sharing your thoughts! i enjoyed reading them! 😊 i love that you mentioned how comfort plays a role in all of this and how the want of comfort may be driving the protagonist's behavior i would love to think the protagonist's "NO" at the end means she'll change her ways but realistically i think most people who have experienced chronic loneliness (like i assume the protagonist has) would act like what you said in your comment...just getting through this breakdown, realizing this breakdown is over now ("no") and then having another breakdown occur later on. it's a vicious cycle
ive read that in verse 2 she makes reference to an actual event that happened on venus!!! (Studies pointed out the planet may have been habitable once, but got into a state of runaway greenhouse effect, causing high temperatures, and other issues that rendered it uninhabitable for life.) source - genius
I really liked your interpretation of the last word. It made things more positive bcs i usually always thought the protagonist was just saying no in the end meaning that nothing is going to change and it's all meaningless
Could you analyze Slipknot’s “Snuff” lyrics? It is a very strong, complex and meaningful lyric for me, and I would love to know what you have to say about it. 🖤
