Oh man, I wish I could afford the online course, but I've already spent so much on training this year, unfortunately. I'm really grateful to you for your videos. I have a rescue Husky, and my last trainer said that this breed isn't really easy to train, but now I've started watching your videos and I'm feeling more confident again. Thank you, great job.

Dude. Like not sure how should I explain this? Been there done that, etc, paid for courses, asked several trainers, etc. This is the second video of you that I’m watching, and on my first walk after the 2 videos, with my dog on the HS colar, it took one correction and she became perfect. The entire one hour walk. I know I need to fix my mistakes, but I could not know what are my mistakes. It’s been three years that I’m trying. Watching this video clearly made me see my mistake. And it’s so simple. Simple as just correcting and constantly. And your love and genuine attitude all of this for free. Thx brother.

Seeing the good communication between the trainer and this dog puts tears in my eyes. Such a beautiful thing to see! This video was an excellent breakdown, easy to understand. Thank you for providing such a resource for people struggling with this behavior. It can be so frustrating when you are trying to do right and the work with your dog like this owner but still having that reactive behavior. She was probably in tears watching him in this first session. It gives her hope that her dreams with her dogs IS possible. ❤

44:20 "missed correction" is VERY IMPORTANT. Early on in my dog's training, my thought that it wasn't fair to correct her when she hadn't done anything yet. But you really have to correct the thought and intention to react.
When reacting starts, you have to deal with a non-operant mental state, and self reenforcing behaviours. It becomes much more challenging and less effective to correct.

I just want to say thank you! I think this is the BEST pet dog who has drive and frustration to meet other dogs mixed with prey drive. I created the same problem that Zeke had by watching multiple unnamed ytbers and 'socializing' my dog at dog parks because its so heavily pushed on this platform. He was already an extremely dog friendly dog, but by me taking him to play physically dogs at the dog park taught him other dogs mean high arousal play and/or threats, or passive victims to annoy. Essentially all dogs came to mean something both more concerning and more valuable to me. Tried u-turning this issue for 2 years with a positive only training (i am glad i learned that foundation though) but being aware that there is no positive competing reinforcers that will win, establishing a baseline with R+, plus more. Everything you did helps complete the picture. I'd also like to mention on the other end there are balanced trainers that try to form a narrative about handler leadership that gets in the way of communicating that watching your dogs behavior is critical for delivering good feedback for what you like/dislike and its refreshing to hear a balanced trainer not obsessively harp on 'respect'. Also your comment about keeping Zeke chill was very helpful. Otherwise the intensity can unexpectedly amplified by overchallenging him where he doesn't even know why hes being punished or what to do about it so he gets panicky/aroused. Speaking from experience.

It's been 3 weeks consistently using this technique and the improvement is day and night, although there are times where my pupper acts up (which is okay because he's in his teenager phase), it happens on rare occasions rather than every time! I've had two border collies before and no problems with them but my new border collie is different, harder to control even though he was trained just like my other two. We’re also inside like Canadian tire you know different places where you can take your dogs inside with there’s other people and things and without the prong not paying attention just put it that way anyways we keep working with her and thank you for your videos. Very encouraging.

Any chance you'd release footage for the full loose leash walking session for Zeke? My Shep is JUST LIKE HIM. I am not afraid to correct him. We were trained by my trainer to use the prong collar. He is off leash trained with the e-collar. All to say we have a pretty good relationship and he has a very good foundation. On leash we have the most problems, I feel like I don't know how to do a correction he cares more about, and I feel like he just lets out the yelp like Zeke at 18:55 but over and over again. I'd like to see how you broke through. (I understand why you didn't just post it though. Some folks are sensitive and think you're being mean/abusive rather than just being a teacher!)

The framework: loose leash training, obedience training, reactivity eliminating training is the same. The tweak here and there depends on the type of issue causing the reactivity. Leash reactivity is more straight forward. Fear reactivity requires more trust building for example.

I have a genuine question,- how would you tackle this if you weren’t able to use force (of any kind)? You see,- as a handler in Scandinavia we aren’t able to use force. Prong collars are forbidden (as well as electric ones), and we have new laws that are stricter than people think. (I wont get in to the jurisdictions) Neuro. is my field (human brain) but I’ve owned working dogs for some decades now. So I don’t ask to be difficult or to defend force free training (that’s simply something we have to do,here). I’m genuinely interested in your take on this. Feel free to use Zeke as an example (bc he’s a typical young German shepherd/Schäferhund) Thanks ☺️

If you are strong enough to hold the dog in place , and patient enough.
I suggest telling the dog to stop.
If he continues hold him by his collar and make him sit till he calms down.
And when the dog makes eye contact and is calm . And listening. Act like it never happened .
And reward him when he dosen't react
With a big active dog, make sure it's well fed and gets plenty of exercise and spend enough time with it that he is fixed on you when not distracted .
When you tell him to stop he has the do it, and when you tell him to sit he has to do it.
People think a prong collar is a short cut but I think it is abuse

@@barneygimble8984 "Hold the dog in place"; "hold him by his collar and make him sit"
      Typical sleazy "force free" cultist.
Your uneducated ignorant opinion is trash. Virtue signaling your unscientific approach as patient doesn't make you right. It exposed you as a charlatan for anyone who really look in to dog behavior and training.
So unless owner weigh at least the same as 200lbs Great Dane, Caucasian shepherd shouldn't own one of these dogs? (Weighing the same still doesn't mean having the same power to restrain dogs in reality) And Causcasian Shepherd is not active breed. They don't like and need that much exercise but naturally is very territorial and never back down from a perceived threat.
Well-fed has nothing to do with reactivity or trainability. Street dogs all over the world don't attack human, pet dogs because they're hungry. They learn to coexist. Yet your well fed neighbor dogs can be reactive to everything on 2 hour walk.
Also what is considered well fed? Feeding amount that maintain good body condition or completely stop dog overeating instinct? Yes you read it right. Dogs, cats and many animals would eat as much as they can if allowed, and they can go without food for days without going insane if the situation demand!!!They don't have daily diet, nutrition intake. It's human concept for human convenience to create routine when keeping pet. There is a reason, any serious trainers, vets would advise against auto feeding for health reasons, as well as motivation.
How many hours a Border Collie spend on farm herding sheep and spend time with sheep farmer? How many hour Great Pyrenees roam with sheep? Same questions for many popular breeds you can insert here. German Shepherd has Shepherd in it's name for a reason. Are you saying a blue collar worker with less than 8 hour for personal time shouldn't own these type of dogs because these dogs would require full time job equivalent of exercise to be receptive to training!?
Are you sure your dog is not the one training you?
      .

In the first part of the video Zeke was barking/reactive. He then learned to walk correctly on leash with prong. In the second part when you were working on lunging/reactivity/barking the dog did not exhibit any of these behaviors. The dog was no longer reacting to another dog. So where did the transition/ correction training occur? It seems like something is missing.

    • @lukeryuzaki2328
      @lukeryuzaki2328 11 місяців тому +6

The loose leash walking training takes care most of the problem.
You have to understand that, loose leash walking training even without the main distraction means to drive home the point about handler control the walk. Lunging, pulling, excessive barking is the signs that dogs don't respect handler, and those behaviors are used to control the walk: pull, lunge to over power handler to move toward other dogs; barking makes handler move away from other dogs/excite other dogs to respond. Practice loose leash walking without the main distractions, allow you to both correct and reinforce desire behaviours first ,before you move to the next step. For example, walk around let the dogs smell, but correct it if it pulls to the smell. This way handler only correct dog with P+ less frequent and as hard (on lower level in comparison to the level required to correct against reactivity). Dogs would then behave and mindful to avoid P+ and you know you make progress when R- and R+ are almost only things you do when loose leash walking during these training lap.
Get loose leash walking training right, with some basic obedience training, you would have fixed plenty of problem already.
The second part here, is exercise to improve impulse control to keep arousal in check and redirect that arousal to acceptable outlet.

I have to say, I purchased a training from another popular UA-camr, and I have to say, I learned more from you in one video than I have yet from the training I regretfully spent good money on. The fact that you show the process, in the moment, as it’s being taught is so much more useful than short instructional videos with dogs that already know what to do and are already trained. I feel like it’s confusing watching how an already trained dog reacts and then when you apply it to my untrained puppy they don’t teach you how to recover from it all not going like they say it should go. Does that make sense? Anyways, thanks for the clarity and the useful functional way you deliver. It resonated. It’s been so un-useful that I actually want my money back. Damn…

Could you please elaborate on why you think an e-collar would not be the right tool for correcting reactivity? I’ve been using my e-collar for correcting reactivity because the prong collar has no effect on my dog anymore no matter how hard I pop once lit up. My current and previous trainer have both recommended e-collar corrections. Although we are still working on his reactivity to this day, it seems the e-collar on max held down is the only effective method of snapping him out of it. do you punish with a high correction even if the dog is fearful and showing aggressing to "keep the threat away"? i feel like when i have done this it doesn't go through to his panicked mind and he just gets worse. if i practise avoidance and distraction he seems more willing to listen. I don't see how you can say/tell a dog is overfed. The waist line is still very visible.
Looks like an Eastern Europe German Shepherd. Back is less angular. Proportionally body length and height is not as extreme as many show line, pet German Shepherd. Also wider body structure, big head is considered good for German Shepherd because they're meant to be big working dog. Natural strength from body structure can't be substituted by physical training.

@@jonesuff From my experience, I don't think it there was overreliance on treats. At the early stage of these trainings with high level of distraction, positive reinforcement after correction is still important to make clear what desired behavior is to the dog. Treat would be phased out as dog impulse control improve.

Hi there! What state are you based out of? We have a 10yr old pitbull mix that is conditioned to the ecollar and prong. The only issue we struggle with is her reactivity with dogs (our fault on the lack of socialization). We’ve tried correcting her with the e collar and prong and even with the prong she will still forcefully lunge and pull after multiple corrections. It took her about 6 months to adapt to our puppy but we cannot walk them together side by side as she projects her reactivity at other dogs onto the puppy with a bite at his face. Luckily we have always caught these issues on time and has not been a major incident yet. Any advise would greatly be appreciated!

You shouldn’t be correcting a dog on an ecollar if you don’t know what your doing and just do what the video showed you and do it with your dog on a prong collar and you should get a 2.25 prong collar it’ll help a lot and watch the video as many times as u need too so you can do it correctly

@@FHWORLD_ Good to hear that you have found a trainer and working on the issue.
What the poster meant is that you may not hurt your dog, but mentally you confuse it using training tools without a proper training regime. Normally you need to fix the reactivity with prong collar, then improve obedience training before moving onto E collar. E collar use is built on obedience onto verbal command; directly replace prong collar use in foundation training phase.

I don't get where my dog stands in the reactivity spectrum.
He does not react to people or wildlife. Is very indiferent toward them, maybe like to pay attention to cats but does not chase or jum on them.
However, with other dogs walking nearby, is like 50/50. Half of them he just pass by them fine and the other half is where the issue start, specially if the other dog bark at him or is launching toward him. If the other dog ignores him, he is like attentive but finally also keep moving.
It is like he is reactive to reactive dogs. 😅

I tried a similar method with the be of my rescue pitties. He is so so smart and well behaved at home but in public loses it and screams/barks/flops around on his lead when we see another dog. He’s very gentle with all other animals. He is a very sensitive boy & when a trainer tried to put a prong collar on him, he laid down and cried and refused to move. Is there an alternative to this collar? Typically he is walked on a freedom harness clipped on the front chest clip as to turn him around when he pulls. I believe his reactivity stems from insecurity/fear as he was a stray in Chicago before I got him. (& he was very shy and non reactive the first 3 months I had him. He lives with another dog and I’ve had several fosters he did okay with after slow, controlled introductions)

I'm not a dog trainer and maybe he'll respond, but the dog in the video is confident and over aroused/frustrated but not fearful. I think if reactivity stems from fear, this wouldn't be a good way to handle it... Adding this level of discomfort on a dog that may not respond well to pressure might make things much worse. Just my opinion. You've got to work on protecting and advocating for your dog, so they know they are safe. Just my opinion... Best of luck 💖

It sounds like the trainer may not have introduced the prong collar and conditioned your dog to it properly. Miles has another video specifically on introducing the prong collar. It's also absolutely crucial to use the Herm Sprenger brand. There are lots of fakes and other brands that don't have quality rounded tips. My dog is reactive in almost the exact same way and doesn't act aggressive towards other dogs but understandably upsets them to the point where they want to put him in his place or fight. My overall preference is a slip lead, but I can attest that every other collar/leash option besides the prong has been more dangerous for my boy because of the way he flops and yanks. He has almost seriously hurt himself and me from doing that. Since introducing the prong collar and Miles' training style 1 week ago, my dog's life and my life have completely changed for the better. He has been calmer and more responsive in all situations with and without the prong. He's also excited to see it, thanks to a pleasant introduction. My only regret is not doing this sooner due to silly social pressure.
