I keep seeing comments that say Vinnie is underappreciated and underrated. Fact is any serious rock drummer knows him and appreciates the Hell out of him and rates him very high as a drummer, influence and icon in drumming. Even his Brother who inspired him to play to begin with.
I agree with everything you are saying. And I still think he’s very underrated. I also think it destroys his more famous brother in terms of groove pocket chops sound technique performance everything.
Vinny is the perfect example of an undeniably great drummer who plays modestly and tastefully. Dumb asses think "oh that's so easy" like it's a fucking competition. Try playing along with this and you'll realize that you're not as good as you thought you were. It's hard to keep time on any instrument. This just kills and grooves at the same time. Much love!
+Jonas Butler Your comment propobly is refering to amature drummers because for a non amature drummer this song is a piece of cake .. actually it's the whole cake ! I'm not saying he's bad but he's not the dream drummer you discribe !!
Thank you.... I'm 61....I grew up on Rock and Ronnie James Dio..... Vinnie Appice is,.and has always been one of my absolute favorite Rock drummers.....' he's extremely solid... always plays deep in the pocket with great feel....with great heart and perfect timing......and besides.... Ronnie loved Vinnie's playing.....and it's easy to see why.....we love you Vinnie.....and your brother Carmine......you both are top notch....and much loved...and appreciated....live long and prosper...
I'm really trying to get my playing this consistent and let me tell ya. It's way harder to make this song sound like he does then ANY gospel chop I know
He makes it LOOK easy. It's cuz he's a rock veteran, having played as a pro all his adult life, and he's just a practiced, serious musician. Great look at his playing here. Love it.
*I always loved Vinnie's Bonhamesqe' way of lagging his snare and tom hits... Without dropping the BPM tempo, it makes it all feel a little slower than it actually is, thus giving the groove the feel of a giant monster like King Kong or Godzilla stomping along, marching towards their doomed prey...*
I personally love the way Vinnie you do double Hits......throw in tasteful rolls and fills....and still don't overplay.... especially with your cymbals......you always have good form....and you seem to make every song.... sound like a complete performance in Rock drumming......you never seem to get out of shape.......that's why Ronnie...and everyone that knows real Rock performing.....loves your drumming......your very appreciated...... sincerely.....thank you Vinnie.
For me, Vinny is among the top 5 Heavy Metal drummers in history. Great technique, powerful hands and no mercy to strike the drums, in short, perfection for style.
Vinny was Dio’s right-hand man. Played with him in Black Sabbath twice, played with him in the band DIO, as well as Heaven & Hell, and played drums on a tribute album to Dio when he died. If that’s not the most devout friendship, then nothing is.
Awesome feeling behind the kit. I love Vinnie's playing. I met him at a clinic at Creative Music in Connecticut about 30 years ago. A perfect gentleman. Thanks Vinnie.
I met Vinnie at winter NAMM 2020. And extremely sweet guy. He noticed the picture of my and my mom in phone and asked about her-I had recently lost her to dementia. He literally got tears eyed when I told him that. We then talked about his stint drumming for John Lennon-very cool guy! Great drummer, too.
I was watching a lot of drum covers to this so and so many people overplay the drums to this. This is a beautiful example of playing for the greater good of the band.
How awesome it is to realize just how much a particular drummer has influenced you over those awkward but necessary formative years. Vinny's playing first captivated me with his work on Black Sabbath's "Mob Rules." Since then, his ability to create spacious patterns, to postpone the 2 & 4, not to mention his down beats as ell, and then there's his inner clock which gives him the ability not to speed up the end of his rolls even when the roll pattern of choice moves from quarters to sixty-fourths across two bars, mind you. And then there's that classic Bonham roll at 3;29, which Dio himself was quite fond of as well. Thanks Vinny for all the inspiration you've provided to me and legions of heavy drummers the world over.
Excellent meter just smacks you in the ears right off the bat. The bars are so even. I got to help at a clinic with his bro in the 90s and he has that same groove. It's in those paesano genes I suppose!
Love both the brothers, true rock powerhouses. Not a huge Dio fan, never thought before that there was much to this song, but Vinny just crushes it. Have this bookmarked, watch it often, and enjoy it every time......
Not just a solid Rock player , but very musical and aware of the entire band as well ... always great to see Vinny playing !! Some awesome library he has under his belt.
Vinny is the best!!! He is the reason this rock chick learns to play, no only because of his awesomeness as a drummer but also because of who he is as a person.....just plain awesome!!! Love you forever Vinny!
Vinny is def. underated in a huge way. He's quite skilled and has a very unique "touch," that's his and no one elses. Truth be told, his drumming is a lot more complex than meets the eye..when you see him playing, it's quite shocking and impressive! A lot of sticking going on that may not be captured by ear alone..well done, Vinny!
Mid or slightly below mid tempo hard hitting tune that is so ear friendly it will remain timeless. Rock solid drum arrangement that totally compliments it.
Listen up kiddies... School is in. Anyone who thinks Vinny is a sloppy drummer isn't paying attention. He is quite simply one of the most technical drummers in Rock. Duplicating his style is very difficult due to the nuance that he uses. I love Vinny Appice and feel that he has been somewhat underrated. Keep in mind the size of the set that he uses and what he is able to accomplish with his set up. For me he is in my top 5 all time best drummers. Study hard and learn.
The main drum beat itself is kind of dissected and has many stops but he makes it work and blend perfectly. The contrast with slow beat and fast fills is amazing.
Yeah being 48 I remember hearing Vinnie when I started playing, and even though I was more of a Thrash drummer, I was a Sabbath head (though before my time) and love Bill Ward too. But the 3 albums with Vinnie were Master Pieces!! Especially when I heard Dehumanizer, everyone was nuts for the Computer God Intro.
I love how he can be right on top of the beat but then he's also just kinda feeling the song, the one fill he did I think was a Nontuplet by accident and it sounds awesome lol 200iq
Vinnie....your meter and fills have always been legendary...and your snare work is always in the pocket.... unique and sounding great...... what alot of people do don't understand......these legendary rock Stars don't allow people into their homes...but Ronnie did.......they usually just meet at a music store.... move some equipment together....with the price tags still on them....and jam together......and even on equipment that's not their own....and not even adjusted perfectly to their own touches and dexterity.... manage to still sound better than everyone else..... but... just good luck trying to sound like Ronnie James Dio.....his snarling vocals and power are extremely hard to duplicate......why do you think most people don't sound like Ronnie Dio.....they Also wrote this music to be commercially successful.....The Holy diver album ...and Ronnie and Vinnie... are Known all over the world... much respect is deserved when mentioning these real Rock Stars..... 💜
Rock-solid drumming from Vinny as usual. One of the greatest rock drummers in my opinion. He plays for the song, not for himself.
totally agreed
Indeed.
You are right
I keep seeing comments that say Vinnie is underappreciated and underrated. Fact is any serious rock drummer knows him and appreciates the Hell out of him and rates him very high as a drummer, influence and icon in drumming. Even his Brother who inspired him to play to begin with.
Carmine said in an interview at Drumeo in Canada that Vinnie was faster than him.
Those of us who know......know.🤘🤘
I gotta say man I’ve been playing drums for years and I rarely hear his name.
I agree with everything you are saying. And I still think he’s very underrated. I also think it destroys his more famous brother in terms of groove pocket chops sound technique performance everything.
How can the original drummer that played with Ronnie James Dio on the album Holy Diver be underrated their is no way ever
Much love!
Nicely put.
Right on!
I agree 100%! His groove is so heavy and fat and he plays some of the most underrated drum tracks the rock/metal world has ever seen.

I'm not saying he's bad but he's not the dream drummer you discribe !!
WhiteLion2013 I can tell you one thing you should take with you: It is not WHAT you play, it is HOW you play it.
Thank you.... I'm 61....I grew up on Rock and Ronnie James Dio..... He combines strong hitting with dynamic and musicality, hard to find today with all the trigger dudes
I'm really trying to get my playing this consistent and let me tell ya. It's way harder to make this song sound like he does then ANY gospel chop I know
Experience comes with dynamics and soul to a song
I think Casey Deitz from "The Velvet Teen" fits that description. Maybe Greg Saunier from "Deerhoof" as well on the album Maggie.
All the trigger dudes trigger me lol
sounds like a talented creative human playing unlike todays drummers who are about speed technique and sounding like artificial intelligence
He makes it LOOK easy. It's cuz he's a rock veteran, having played as a pro all his adult life, and he's just a practiced, serious musician. Great look at his playing here. Love it.
The consistency in his playing is um matched, I but he could play this 5 diffrent times and the recording would sound exactly the same
*I always loved Vinnie's Bonhamesqe' way of lagging his snare and tom hits... Without dropping the BPM tempo, it makes it all feel a little slower than it actually is, thus giving the groove the feel of a giant monster like King Kong or Godzilla stomping along, marching towards their doomed prey...*
It's called playing behind the beat.
Yeah his feel is awesome. One of my favorite rockdrummers .
Vinny is a beast. Love that fill at 3:29
I personally love the way Vinnie you do double Hits......throw in tasteful rolls and fills....and still don't overplay.... especially with your cymbals......you always have good form....and you seem to make every song.... sound like a complete performance in Rock drumming......you never seem to get out of shape.......that's why Ronnie...and everyone that knows real Rock performing.....loves your drumming......your very appreciated...... sincerely.....thank you Vinnie.
DIO was lucky to have Vinnie in his band, awesome drummer
They were both fortunate to have each other.
I have always loved his style...one if the best grooving rock drummers! EVER!!
great great great drummer, he is criminally underappreciated
+OnPoint One of my biggest influences as a young drummer. Huge impact on my own idea of what a drummer is. Thanks for killing it Vinny!
@@macadoo2530 Oh yeah .He's still got it man! Three thumbs up ,way up.
One of the most underrated drummers of metal and under underappreciated.
For me, Vinny is among the top 5 Heavy Metal drummers in history. Great technique, powerful hands and no mercy to strike the drums, in short, perfection for style.
He's not underrated
@@Atritifff definitely in my top ten
hæ ,underrated ????,,,where have u been ,,,
We all appreciate him. I saw him on the Mob Rules tour ,I was 14 .He can still play with absolute perfect timing ,Yeah!
Vinny was Dio’s right-hand man. Played with him in Black Sabbath twice, played with him in the band DIO, as well as Heaven & Hell, and played drums on a tribute album to Dio when he died. If that’s not the most devout friendship, then nothing is.
Vinny is phenomenal. He puts a smile on my face. Nobody can play like him. One of a kind.
I love his playing on this song, especially them tasty fills!
Any beginner can get about 4 years worth of drum lessons just from this clip.
Just met Vinny this week at a Florida Drum Clinic. When you look up the definition of the word "class" there should be a caption with his picture.
He and his brother carmine ,the greatest brother duo in rock.
I agree 100%. Vinnie is the man. His drum playing sounds so full and rounded.
he has great feel, chops and plays tastefully.
Awesome feeling behind the kit. I love Vinnie's playing. I met him at a clinic at Creative Music in Connecticut about 30 years ago. A perfect gentleman. Thanks Vinnie.
One of the deepest grooves and feels in metal! Great to see this!
Wow, it's been a while since I saw Vinnie playing this song. Way to go, Vinnie! Rest in peace, dear Dio ...
The right amount of strength and lots of dynamics.
Great!!!
Great to see artists giving their time to the rest of the drumming world and not worry about copywrite
Man there is some cool licks in there. Vinny does it effortless.
This guy was and still is my rock drumming hero.
My first drum hero and I still love his drumming just as much! Killer feel, unique fills and just powerful drumming!
Love your style
He really does make it look easy. Deceptively so. I love his technique, but especially the FEEL that he has. Top notch.
Wow! His feel is amazing!
Superb solid rock drummer!
I LOVE HOW THE DRUMS HAVE A PRICE TAG ON IT. I WOULD MARK THAT ONE UP IF VINNIE APPICE PLAYED HOLY DIVER ON IT.
Oh they will.
I’m sure it got marked up an extra 1k, if not more. Lol
I was watching a lot of drum covers to this so and so many people overplay the drums to this. This is a beautiful example of playing for the greater good of the band.

Very impressive solid rocking! This is what pure professionalism sounds like.

Vinnie is just one of the greatest rock drummers. Completely the opposite of sloppy, he's spot on but also plays with feel.
Exactly.
I agree that he rocks the house!!! I learn something new from VINNY everytime I watch or listen to him.
Vinny is the best!!! He is the reason this rock chick learns to play, no only because of his awesomeness as a drummer but also because of who he is as a person.....just plain awesome!!! Love you forever Vinny!
te amamos Vinnie!!!
A freaking LEGEND
Love how his left foot is constantly busy
Love Vinny! Not just because he has a boss 1st name but he's why I play drums! I still have his Rock Drum set book from 40 plus years ago!!
Class act. Love the kick drum Vinny!
I learned to play for real by watching you Vin, for that I’m forever grateful.
Vinny is def. underated in a huge way. He's quite skilled and has a very unique "touch," that's his and no one elses. Then stop underrating him. Most of us have had him in the top 5 drummers of all time 30 years ago.
Gawd I love those lightning fast single stroke rolls!
His drumming on the holy diver album is so tasty, underated drummer
Man this is clean
Mid or slightly below mid tempo hard hitting tune that is so ear friendly it will remain timeless. Rock solid drum arrangement that totally compliments it.
I've met Vinny a couple times at the "drum wars" shows with Carmine. Really nice guy and rock solid drummer. Awsome rock tecniqe. A+
Love this clip!
Such groove! Go Vinny!!
Vinnie has that Attack- Stand up and shout is so good

Good luck with that son :-)
Young drummers don't learn by copying other styles, they create their own style.
Now sit down.
Most technical drummers in rock history?!
For the love of Jesus, get off the crack.
I love that ride bell he hit at the end of the big rock ending. I found that funny...
Vinnie is a bit of a showman.
Amazing drummer... Can't say anything more
This man’s drumming on the Mob Rules record, specifically Falling off the Edge of the World...
Godlike.
one of my top 10 rock drummers ever
Super solid
Go Vinny - go Vinny 🤘🤘... da geht mir das Herz auf, bei dieser perfekten Performance (der Sound wird zur Nebensache...)
Loving his powerful and accurate style..great Vinny, the best.
Holy Drummer!👊🏼🙂👍🏼
YEAH!
AWESOME
so much perfection!!! heavily played and well execute! !
Siempre escuche los albumes con dio, pero sinceramente no conocia la trayectoria de APICE
QUE GRAN BATERISTA🎉🎉🎉
My favorite drummer!!
The main drum beat itself is kind of dissected and has many stops but he makes it work and blend perfectly. The contrast with slow beat and fast fills is amazing.
I like the way his kit is set up. High toms slightly left of bass drum. Ride cymbal in just the right spot.
Such a clean, & solid kick ass player💪😎🥁
So cool to see you come and support Breast Cancer Can Stick It Drummathon 2017 with April Samuels! Nice to meet you.
One of the greatest!!!!
This drummer likes me very much... im hearing the holy diver album a lot lately, and a lot of fills are pretty cool.
I love the mini drum solos that Vinny and Dio managed to work into the song when they wrote it.
Perfecto exacto milimétrico .ni más ni menos el mejor
Done by the master himself love the off beats the fills
I miss hearing Vinny’s Slingerlands with the concert toms. THAT was an identifiable sound.
Lo belleza de lo simple. Brutal, EL maestro.
Incredible!🤘
so powerful, precise, masterful.

Always loved his sound. Not heavily processed like some of the other 80’s band drummers.
love this song!!
The way he slaps the cymbals around he's the man
Love Vinny.
Crack, saludos dese Ecuador
Impeccable tempo
Every drummer who can really groove rocks
Vinnie never ages.
So Awesome!
Wow, he makes the drums talk. One of my favourite drummers. Thanks for uploading
We love you vinny
Wau excelente
Rock solid. Not one note rushed.
I love how he can be right on top of the beat but then he's also just kinda feeling the song, the one fill he did I think was a Nontuplet by accident and it sounds awesome lol 200iq
The way he switched his grip on the stick in his right hang at 2:18!!! Between his index and middle finger. Strange. But works for him.
That is something I would do if i was experiencing pain, wonder if his fingers were hurting a tad.
