I was guessing a boost around 400-420….. when you said 360, I was shocked at how close I was! I just started recording 6/7 months ago and you are who I mainly watch! Thank you so much!
Thanks man. I can’t wait to experiment with this eq but I actually think I’m more excited that you have joined the helix family… you are going to love it!
I have a plexi based patch that I built on my helix. I have an eq block that had a 7db boost at 400, I just now drop it to 360. 🤯🤯. You are a GENIUS my friend. That changed the world on my Strat and LP. Can’t thank you enough!
THIS! I watched this vid a little earlier this morning and just tried it on a guitar track that has been giving me a bit of grief. Made a remarkable and instant difference! Thanks!
Guitarists in general, especially since the early 90's metal scene blew up, tend to neglect the whole mid range spectrum. They push the highs and lows because it sounds heavy and aggressive, but when the rest of the mix gets introduced they can't understand why the guitars vanish. This is because the guitar naturally sits in the very center of our perceivible auditory range. (This is why guitar is so versatile and plays well with so many types of music.) Now I'm not saying that the eq should look more like a frown than a smile, but more of a "wobbly sine wave". Boosting and cutting those frequencies for which the situation calls. Not that I'm saying that Joe is saying that this is a one-size-fits-all solution, as we might not be using a modeler with a global eq, and real amps don't have tue same frequency curves. Plus the speaker cab, microphones, and mic placement will be a factor as well.
Is that in the key of Cmin? I noticed that the 360 frequency is just between the f and f# and was wondering if taking the key into account when choosing the frequency might make any difference. Sorry for the strange, nerdy question. :-) BTW - thanks for sharing your time and knowledge. All (or at least most) of us out here are better at this because of you!
Never thought that 360hz can help so much with the guitars... Thank you so much. You should probably try 30hz as well with a pulteq style eq. that adds some kinda thickness to the guitars as well
The closest I ever got...thought it was 200-350. I've been using the multiband dynamics trick (hearing different frequencies) Joe said a while ago. Thanks Joe :)
Not gonna lie, I've learned a ton from you Joe, but every time I click a video.... I really hope you end up singing. Dude, your voice is stellar. I'm a decent guitar player, and I'm getting to where I can keep time decently on drums, but man.... I can't sing. Back on topic.... I'll play around with the 360 boost later on. Thanks for another good one Joe.
Great advice about lowering 360Hz on the drums to reduce the "boxy wff wff" sound. I had that very anomaly going on with an active project. Dropped about 2dB of 360Hz with a fairly wide Q on the drum buss, and voila!! It really did get rid of it. I also added about the same amount of 360Hz on my electric git buss. The before/after is subtle, but adds a touch of mid-energy that was missing before. I like it. Thanks for the great tips!
Would love to see your take on helix tones. I use it as an interface to record everything (Gtr, vox, bass, synth) but am very much a novice and always struggle to tame its harshness, especially for more gainy strat tones.
It seems that is what the Hudson Broadcast is doing in my rig, it makes the G and D string pop a little bit more. This pedal is always on since I got it.
Tom Scholz (Boston/Rockman Founder) always said that the mid-range is where the guitar lives or dies. I have an EQ pedal that has a 400 Hz slider so I push that just a bit. A little 100 Hz and a pinch of 1.6 k pleases me.
Great video. I like these short and to the point videos. This sounds good even on my iPad speakers (could definitely hear the difference). Can’t wait to listen again but on my studio monitors. Btw, would like to see a review of you on the plugin-alliance ssl channels and how you would use this in mixing. I use Pro Tools and mix almost always with channel strip plugins.
Great video! Just tried it on a new mix and subtle but works exactly as you said Joe. Adds a nice touch of warmth and body to guitars! Do you have a something similar for bass?!
Hey Joe. Are all of these plugins that you use exclusive to Studio One? Or can they be purchased for other DAWs? I like this one and the EQ one you usually use. Excellent video as usual
That is a great tip, Thank you! Maybe this is what Tesla meant when he said “If you only knew the magnificence of the 3, 6, and 9, then you would have a key to the universe.” ---369hz---🤔
The second one was also louder in volume. Sorry, but this is kind of silly. I know everyone has their own opinions and approach, but the most talented and successful producer I know has straight up told me "300 to 400 hz is garbage on guitars."
Funny isn't it; I realy dislike that frequency - my guitar buss generally starts with a deep cut around 330, then I begrudgingly bring the level back up intil it fills in the sound for the mix.
Joe, I'm a huge fan of your mix together series and a lot of your other videos but I find this one misleading. There is no such thing as a magic frequency that universally improves guitars and you know it. And you didn't level-match the eq! Even though you know and keep saying how important that is to make informed decisions because louder=better. I tried this and had to reduce -2.3db for parity and it sounded worse because my guitar track already had enough 360hz in it. I would have loved if you more clearly presented this as what it is: an often overlooked frequency area for guitar that's worth checking for warmth. I think it's also worth mentioning the bass often lives around 400hz on small speakers like phones and you'd want to take care the guitar doesn't mask it. Hope this comes across as constructive as I mean it. Still a fan of your content. :)
As a middle child, I do not give you permission to use our word. That’s OUR word. I will no longer be watching your channel due to your ignorance. I hope your middle child teaches you a lesson.

Me too! But I thought he was highlighting a cut because I liked it better without the boost haha
Thanks man. I can’t wait to experiment with this eq but I actually think I’m more excited that you have joined the helix family… you are going to love it!

Real magic. Just tried it and brought warmth back into a track.

Thanks for that tip. It really does make a difference.
I would like to hear this complete track. Please share with us Joe, and Happy New Year!
That was really useful! Tks
Cheers from Brazil!

If anyone answers this question I need to know the answer
Thank you, Joe!
Always with golden nuggets of info. Thank you, brother.
Very helpful and good choice with the helix!
As always, great vid Joe
As always, your videos give a wealth of information...I am going to try this magic frequency on some of my mixes. Thank you very much, Joe!
i'll be playing with this on my next mix
Really nice sound!
i find myself often cutting with a narrow band around 270-280, and boosting around 360 like you did here also, cool👍

Great tip... subtle and effective! Thanks Joe!
This is great advice! what's the frequency to boost the 80`s hard rock honky tone?

Learning a lot from your videos😃
Thanks for the awesome content and advice.👍🏻
Makes the the guitar tighten up. Nice.
thanks!

Thank you
Awesome great music so sound. Studio
I always have trouble with around 200 hz in the mix. Nice to know that 360~ hz adds that warmth in guitars
Nice tip 👏🏻 i'm gonna use it👍🏻
Great video! What is the name of the song that is being mixed?
good stuff buddy
Interesting! Do you find this changing if you use a crunchy single coil guitar like a tele, vs a deeper double humbucker guitar like a les paul?
Probably use it more on single coils if I had to guess
Thanks Joe! As already mentioned, I ´d also be interested how you do the globals in Helix.
Wasn’t Andy Sneap using that 360 hz in his multiband compressor preset? Great gem, Joe!

Very interesting

It's about F sharp 360 hz if you did it at 323 you are resonating the open East string
Hey Joe. Are all of these plugins that you use exclusive to Studio One? Or can they be purchased for other DAWs? I like this one and the EQ one you usually use. Excellent video as usual
what’s a good Q value for the boost?
i LOVE THE SONG. What the name of the track?
Whitewash by Joe Gilder
I've always boosted 500khz. I usually cut that frequency out of drums and a bit out of bass guitar, so I think it sounds nice. YMMV.
Randy Rhoads boosted 500hz.
Tom Scholz was big on 800hz.
Love those guys...✌️
Make a video on hass effect in studio one
That is a great tip, Thank you! Maybe this is what Tesla meant when he said “If you only knew the magnificence of the 3, 6, and 9, then you would have a key to the universe.” ---369hz---🤔
We usually have our setup to where the bass and lead guitars compliment each other. I don't like that whump whump either. Thanks for the tip.
nice shirt dude
Darn I guessed 250hz! Gonna give this 360 a try.
That frequency conflicts with my vocal so I cut it. It sounds too "hard". But in a guitar dominant mix that's a good little range.
What’s that mic?
Wouldn’t this be highly dependent on genre and tuning? As guitars go into the extended range, their fundamentals would be changing drastically
I doubt it changes all that much, but of course you'll have to try it and listen and decide if you like it.
how to make a track become a transparent track??
The second one was also louder in volume. Sorry, but this is kind of silly. I know everyone has their own opinions and approach, but the most talented and successful producer I know has straight up told me "300 to 400 hz is garbage on guitars."

Of course it doesn't work every time on all guitars. That's common sense.
630Hz is often nice, too.
I always cut this ' muddy' freq
personally i like to do a 7 or so db boost at 200hz, i am using an 8 string though, makes it sound meaty, but not muddy or too bassy.
Why so much delay?
Seriously, that's your question?
@@supersonicsroots YES
As with most things. It's because I like the way it sounds.
@@HomeStudioCorner Thanks Joe! Wish you all the best
350ish is one of the muddly murkiest freqs. for me, it builds up in a mix way too fast.
I really guessed 300 Hertz, damn
Didn't have my headphones in the house...so... UA-cam plus phone speaker equaled no difference heard at all. 😂
I actually could hear it even on my phone.
Interesting, as I tend to pay attention at around 680 hz.
As a middle child, I do not give you permission to use our word. That’s OUR word. I will no longer be watching your channel due to your ignorance. I hope your middle child teaches you a lesson.
😂 I'm a middle child, too. I give myself permission.
@@HomeStudioCorner how rude.
I definitely thought you said “I HAVE a middle

What is happening right now?
