In dealing with diatoms, which every tank gets, when they got widespread in my tank after cycling I added snails and hermit crabs and they devoured all of it in a few days. The snails were astrea and the hermits were blue and scarlet. I had a couple small turbos too. 60 gallon reef. Thanks for your video series. Very knowledgeable and helpful.
I have probably learnt more from your videos than from anywhere else. Its cool how you manage to simplify things. Also love how you approach stuff like acclimating and adding corals, very well explained how and why we can add them much quicker than people think.
I've kept marine tanks for 15 years including an 8ft full coral tank and I still enjoy watching your videos and finding out little nuggets of info that somehow I haven't picked up or have overlooked. Perfect channel :)
OMG Jake I love watching your videos for the real information on reef keeping. You know your sh@t and there’s no doubt about that, it’s just refreshing to here you speak of how easy it is to keep a standard reef aquarium without all the hipe of having to have a ton of electronics and using every product out there because someone said it’s the only way. I’m 52 and been reefing off and on for 20 plus years steady for the last 10, I don’t care about how fast my corals grow, I care how healthy they are and happy they are. I keep my hands out always, feed fish once a day if I remember and keep the glass clean so I can enjoy looking at it. Keep up the great work Jake and have a great reefing year!
I set up a ten gallon out of stuff I had in the boneyard a couple weeks ago and stole all of my soft and LPS corals out of my main tank... so far it’s been a simple beautiful reef. Right now I have purigen in the HOB but I’m really thinking of going to just run mechanical filtration. It’s put me in a different mind set about what I actually enjoy about the hobby. I like the idea of a simple not-overstocked tank I can spend most of my time watching rather than tinkering. I went years as a “water change guy” with zero issues and not testing unless there were visual cues... and the solution was always more water changes lol.. Love your tank!
love the tank dude....like the straight to the point tips on running the tank as simply as possible giving more time to enjoy the setup without complicating matters and the proof is the pudding apart from the free hitchikers on the initial setup you could probably keep your hands out the tank for another 2 months,a tank that is practically looking after itself speaks volumes about the way you are running it...good job dude.
This is like the 5th time watching this series. Learn a little more every time as I understand more. I am new to saltwater and am in the process of setting up something very similar only slightly larger. Honestly I have had a African Cichlid tank set up for about 22 years and it's self sustaining, I hardly do anything to it other than a 20% water change about 4 tints a year. I was actually in the process of downsizing because I didn't want to mess with it anymore. So I bought a smaller tank to move Scott 1/2 my fish to and was doing research on UA-cam about tank setup and your 300 days no water change video came up in the search. I watched it and it awestruck me. It made keeping a reef tank seem possible. I always thought having a Saltwater tank was to complicated. As I do research I realize that it is very complicated, but I keep coming back to this series and convince myself that it only has to as complicated as I want it to be. Thanks again. Hopefully I can have success similar to yours.
Mad respect! I've been preaching how effective brigbtwell razor is at tackling algae but for whatever reason it never gets it's minute in the spotlight. Tank looks awesome!
Maybe it has something to do with the info Brightwell publishes. There is no mention of algae removal. Whoever writes the copy makes it REALLY sound like snake oil. The listed use is, "Complex systemic cleaning polymer product, specifically formulated to clean aquarium live rock surfaces and decorations systemically. What the heck does that mean?
Jake, i have a 14 gal peninsula. It’s been running for 3 years. A mixed reef with a 4 year old sea apple from my old tank. I feed heavily with benereef. I don’t have a refugium but corals are thriving.
Nice tank I have had my nano setup 12 years! First biocube 14 now a jbj 24 with truluman leds and refugium in middle chamber loaded with pods two fish a Pygmy angel a 12 yo true peculiar clown and a gold banded shrimp and a lps coral
Jake please correct me if I’m wrong but you have had fish in that tank since day one therefore it must have cycled. Probably the micro bacter X. I’m not disagreeing on your point that corals don’t need cycling, your explanation makes sense.
Beautiful tank thanks for doing a one day set up I have done many tanks that way and have good looking tank down the track I normally get salt and temp right and then add rock corals and one or two small fish but have have fully stock a tank with corals in under 2 weeks and the live sand and life rock does help a lot too With you on the salt level I run my tank about 33 to 34 normally and top off when at 35ppt have always done was I don't run ATO on the tanks And for diatom I use yeast at 1/4 teaspoon per 400gal or just a pinch for smaller tanks in to 2 cups of aquarium water stir muiltpe times over 20mins to active the yeast and pour in tank and do a dose every other day used it for years and it seem to speed it up
This has convinced me to get into the Hoby, it shows newbies like me that marine tanks don't have to be as difficult and expensive to set up as I first thought. Love how beautiful and clean this aquarium looks, a lot of tanks I see just look a complete mess to me.
Jake, you proved me wrong. I am mature enough to admit it. Nice tank and great instructions. I still think that the easier way to hobbiest success is to take it slow and steady but well done. Do me a favor would ya? Do an episode about what you feed your new vs mature systems, frequency of feeding, types of foods, etc. That would be awesome for a new reefer to see. Also, wear your coelacanth shirt again! Love your material, keep it coming!
This video honestly got me confident enough to start my first tank! The Red Sea Max E 170 it is.. Thank you for doing such a good job bringing the lifestyle/knowledge about this magical topic to guys like me.
Wow i did not expect my question to pop up in the video. As an update to the diatom bloom i faced, i really just monitored posphate levels and ran gfo when i realized i had high phosphate. Also, i got a diamond goby that sifted all the sand and completely eliminated the algae. I would say monitoring levels and running gfo while feeding lightly eliminated all algae. Sand was cleaned by the goby and walls cleared up like fog on a window. The tank is currently completely free of most algae except the slightest bit of hair algae that seems under control. Also, great video!
Wanted to thank you for this series. I have learned more from watching these videos multiple times than from anywhere else. I am setting up a similar system and plan to follow a similar protocol to this video series. Could you please make a list of all the corals you out in the tank? I tried to grab most of the names from the build video but a list would be great. Lastly what are you feeding the fish. Thanks again.
after watching many of your videos I took courage and will mount a nano.ja I have skimmer, deionizer filter, 100l display, salt, now the most expensive part of the project is the lights (and how expensive they are). in two months i believe i can start.
Tank looks great man. Don’t listen to those stubborn old goats from 20,15 years back who are stuck in their ways. All these old rules are obsolete with the technology we have today.
Love your videos Jake. This one has been especially helpful. I've just setup my first ever Reef tank,a nuvo 20g so there's lots of helpful info for me here
I maintain a 10 gallon filled to the brim with coral. I mix my salt at 34 ppt. I refill a small amount of water every morning. The highest salinity it becomes is 35 ppt.
Thanks for responding to my comment. And I got top billing, too! I think some of the cranky comments were based on the misunderstanding you were showing a 'how too' vid. It was also not clear it the first couple of vids in the series that this was a one day-and-done build. Is the flow you show during filming typical? It seems like a very low flow tank. Good looking tank. I'm interested to see how Razor works. Brightwell's web site says nothing about Razor killing algae.
and on the diatom comment. Diatoms feed mostly off silica, dim lights makes it worse, either no lights or just use proper lighting, feed more to boost bacteria and your diatoms will go away. Carbon dosing is a huge benefit, I particularly use vodka as it does not swing PH as much as sugar or vinegar would.
ok, correction. The light is not the food, the light provides the coral's internal algae to allow photosynthesis, which is the energy to allow them consume nutrients.
That was a !!! great !!! update every time I watch your videos I hear you saying less is more and I have to agree. I thought it looked like there was bubble algae in the tank but you were calling it something else Probably the scientific name that most of us like me don't know L.O.L. I like simple, No ATO on that tank makes perfect sense to me I would do the same. My tank is 120-gallon and keeping the ATO working is still "not simple" I've tried three different models so far Hydra-Fill with titanium sensors looses sensitivity stops pumping, Hydors Smart Level huge swings in low and high water level and Aqua Medic electronic sensor just stops working or works intermittent after about a month or two. If you have a recommendation i'm open looking at Tunze Osmolator now. Just keep the videos coming I still have a lot to learn and your knowledge always keeps it simple...
In some of his other videos he shows that he uses a gravity ATO. Do a you tube search for Gravity ATO and you will find his video. I am doing the same thing but with an Avast ATO with a solonoid to control the water with a float valve as backup.
How are you going to manage coral overgrowth, especially with the green star polyps and also with some of LPS being close together where sweeper tentacles can kill the neighbors? Thank you for this video series. It's really helpful. Keep the cool content rolling!
Great Update! I noticed the little white spots all over the back wall. I have these in my tank. Can you tell me what they are and how to get rid of them?
Basic setup and maintenance, light feed and waterchanges = healthy system. Thanks for simplified Nano reef setup info ! Maybe more will get into hobby? Hopefully the coke bottle eye glass reef nerds blood pressure doesn't go too high! . Lol .
So I have a question. In your setup you used live sand and artificial bacterial seeded piece of live rock and then you used Brightwell micro bacterxlm. Correct? Well, I was reading the instructions on the bright well, and it says to not use live sand at all and they recommend never using artificially seeded Leibrock ever they claim that it will increase the cycle time by weeks. I need to know if this is the proper procedure because I’m getting ready to set my tank up and I wanted to do it the way you did it, but I’m not sure if using the bright well stuff is the right way. Thank you for your answer.
I watched a similar build series on Waterbox channel and they did things a little different. What they didn’t talk about was water parameters and testing. Can you discuss what parameters should be and how often you should test water? Everything I see online says to buy a bunch of tests and products to add to the tank. Simple is better for me!
Nevermind. I kept watching and answered my own question! Excited for this less complicated version. Makes me think I can do it. If I were to replicate this with a WB 10, would you recommend a protein skimmer? The cube 10 doesn’t come with a skimmer only filter media and pump/output
First of all thanx for sharing such a wonderful knowledge regarding saltwater aquarium I recently have setup a saltwater aquarium . Im dying to keep anemones but the shop keeper says u cannot hav anemone in ur tank unless and until It is 6 months old. How true is that?? Do we have to clean skimmer , if yes. How? Do i have to switch off the light at nite time?? How often to change the water and how much??what should be the intensity and color of light?? Plz answer these questions..🙏
Hey Jake....not a fan of the woodpecker music...yes, that sounds like a woodpecker! :) FYI, I just cycled my tank with StartXLM and they were right....7 days! In 7 days I had 0 ammonia, zero nitrites, and 3 nitrates. Just to make sure I wasn't crazy I added 3 PPM ammonia to the tank (no fish or corals yet) and now 5 days later, 0 ammonia, 0 nitrites, and 8 nitrates. Going to pick up a few fish this weekend!
Robert P Hi Robert, I felt it necessary to respond to some of the query’s here. Jake didn’t actually “Not” Cycle his tank. If I’m correct, he brought in already cycled live rock from a established cycled tank. Which means, he didn’t need to cycle. The live rock provided his biological filter from day one. It was more like doing a 100% water change on already cycled live rock. And he most likely got no ammonia or nitrite spike at all. 😊I’m sure Jake would not have put dry rock in there without a form of biological bacteria in with it.
Hi Jake, Just need some clarification regarding the use of CaribSea LifeRock (infused with bacteria using AragAlive™ technology) and CaribSea Arag-Alive Sand and Brightwell MicrōBacter Start XLM all together as you did for this build......Brightwell has a note under the description for the product that recommends you not use any other type of bacteria product until your cycle with this product is complete. Do not use live sand and particularly DO NOT USE dry seeded artificial live rock. There are no dry bacteria species that will be compatible with this nitrifying bacteria product or that are useful to cycle an aquarium! I'm a little confused and what are your thoughts? I'd really appreciate your insight. Thanks.
Jake can you tell me the dimensions of the glass top you made? Does it cover the entire top except for the piece you cut out to feed through? I'm looking to solve evaporation issues on my RSM Nano as well.
Hi Jake! loved the video! (I hope I've got your name right). Red Sea are definitely one of the best marine suppliers in the world! I'm definitely going to get one of these tanks as soon as possible! 😀😃👍
For the most part I agreed with him, but when he said by dosing just let’s them grow at a “natural normal” pace I don’t agree with. If you think about it, they are growing slower than normal because unlike the ocean, the tank is not staying stable
Hello jake thanks for the amazing videos. Followwing your videos I decided to get Miceobacter start xlm. However, I was thinking like I can add a fish to the tank right away but after doing tests for ammonia it is changing ona daily basis one day it is 0.5 and the other it is 1 ppm. During the new setup can Istart moving my corals to the new tank while waiting for the ammonia to go down?
are you running a protein skimmer on the nano tank? My tank is definitely going in a bedroom and I have heard it can be loud, just wondering on this issue what I should do. Also Where did you get your cool glass lid. I am getting the same tank to start out and love the lid with the space for feeding. Thanks!!!
Loving the build and loved the videos, only thing is at 17:26 where you show the tank's progress as proof that corals don't need cycling, but the tank was cycled, at least enough to keep the fish healthy. But yeah, I agree with you, I don't think coral needs a cycled tank, if you're not feeding the coral there shouldn't be much ammonia anyways.
A juvenile vlamingi tang will eat the bubble algae , you need to have 1 in that tank , once its done its job , you could move it to another tank . I am speaking from experience for my 120 gallon tank . It was a lucky encounter , a friend offloaded me his juvenile vlamingi tang to me due to his tank change . I myself do not keep tang in my own tank thats how I saw the bubble algae being decimated by a single vlamingi tang . Imagine a 120 gallon full of bubble algae and it disappeared in just a few days only . Hope this helps !
I’m running a wavemaker in my RSMN, but see you don’t have one. Is the stock return enough flow for these tanks running softies and a few LPS? Im thinking I may have too much flow in mine after seeing this video!
Can you please do a video on how to setup that light ? I have the red sea 50 led and it's been rought not knowing how to set it up tank is a month old and a algae boom big time
I love the arm that lifts up! Iiwah I woul dhave bought this light first and saved a ton of money! I have a strip light over tank because my cabinets are over the top and didnt have room but I think If i hang it from side of my tank it should work and be able to lift it and get in inside my cabinets! Do you think it may be to strong for a nuvo 20? The tank is very shallow! I cant decide between this and AI prime because prime is on sale and cheaper but I love the flex arm and its much more attractive both the light and the arm versus using a flex arm from Ai and there regular arm dosnt lift up!
love the tank, but bro, whats with the mollies? I think I'm getting close to the time where I feel ready to start a tank. Love your stuff, thanks for the inspiration
@@ReefBuildersVideo awesome! I've researched other reefers and videos on their approach but would be intrested in your option on the best method and how you guys do it there in the studio. Can't wait to see how Jake explains the process.

I love this. Looks like stars in the background with a desert - psychedelic plants

they are pirorbid polychaetes. They can get outta control but are not considered bad.

It was more like doing a 100% water change on already cycled live rock. And he most likely got no ammonia or nitrite spike at all. 😊I’m sure Jake would not have put dry rock in there without a form of biological bacteria in with it.
Wow man you've learnt me alot in such a short time siiiiiiick nano gud luck and thanx 👍👊
Great work
Hi Jake, Just need some clarification regarding the use of CaribSea LifeRock (infused with bacteria using AragAlive™ technology) and CaribSea Arag-Alive Sand and Brightwell MicrōBacter Start XLM all together as you did for this build......Brightwell has a note under the description for the product that recommends you not use any other type of bacteria product until your cycle with this product is complete.
Thanks.
I like how they like without answering
Although beneficial for evaporation, does the glass not negatively impact the effectiveness of the light on the coral ?
you're not wrong, but our lights are so strong these days that it is much less of a concern than it used to be.
Jake, as always great video. Can you share where you got the glass lid with feeding cutout. I’d really appreciate it.
He’s dead
Jake can you tell me the dimensions of the glass top you made? Does it cover the entire top except for the piece you cut out to feed through? I'm looking to solve evaporation issues on my RSM Nano as well.
Any plan's to make another video on this tank? Also would you recommend this tank for a first timer ?
Hi Jake! loved the video!
Thanks!!!
The less you mess with it the better . Always works for me .make it self sustaining
Have things stalled with the closed loop system? It looks a bit idle in the background there lol...
You didnt answer the question about what and how you stick the corals to the rock while its submerged?
Loving the build and loved the videos, only thing is at 17:26 where you show the tank's progress as proof that corals don't need cycling, but the tank was cycled, at least enough to keep the fish healthy.
But yeah, I agree with you, I don't think coral needs a cycled tank, if you're not feeding the coral there shouldn't be much ammonia anyways.
Jake is so lucky. I'd kill to do what he does for a career.
Will you show us how you mean tain this tank. Ty 👌🏻
you betcha, that video is in the queue
Looking nice but if im not mistaken all these corals came from your other aquarium so did u face same problems in other tanks?
Bonjour ou placer vous lecumeur 9001?le miens a du mal à ce placer sous la lumière et l'eau ce vide en dessou de lecumeur
Just got this tank new to the hobby. All I have is live sand, live rock and water rn. What should I be doing next?
Lovin that tank!
I’m running a wavemaker in my RSMN, but see you don’t have one. Is the stock return enough flow for these tanks running softies and a few LPS? Im thinking I may have too much flow in mine after seeing this video!
I love the pair of fish absolutely stunning can't get them in the UK like that if we could with them markings be looking at £500 for a pair.
What are the white dots on the background?
small innocuous tubeworms
Nice! Im interested how it looks in a year or so, if you keep it running. Oh and @6:40min thats a Lobo or?? Thanks for the Vid Jake!
Nope it's an orange Acanthastrea pachysepta which USED to be considered a lobo, but I don't see the harm in calling them 'orange lobos' either.
Aaaah okay, thanks for that Info! 👌
Hi Jake. Could you elaborate on soft and lps corals not liking UV light? Is this an issue on mixed reefs?
Is this tank still running? if so can we get an update???
What is the Tank and Evaporator Cover on the Tank?
Did the cover come with the tank?
I just used razor and the Valonia was turning white the next morning... CRAZY!
Where did you get the glass top for this tank?
Can you please do a video on how to setup that light ? I have the red sea 50 led and it's been rought not knowing how to set it up tank is a month old and a algae boom big time
Jake great video.
Hi where can I put the heater
Hello how often do you change or clean the filter sock?
1-DAY VIDEO...the kit came with carbon......are you running it?
Where did you get the glass screen?
I know this video is old now hope the tank still doing well. I'm not dosing either but I do feed Reef roids. I think that stuff is amazing.
How high do u run your led above your tank ....thank you
Can you tel me you best light settings ?
Loved the video...wish that the actual removal of the algae and aiptasia would have been shown at the end. Maybe on another video? 🤷♀️
Haven't done that yet, will do it all on camera!
@@ReefBuildersVideo awesome! I've researched other reefers and videos on their approach but would be intrested in your option on the best method and how you guys do it there in the studio. Can't wait to see how Jake explains the process.
