For the first time on home video comes all 21 of Hal Roach's two-reelers starring the lovely Thelma Todd and the pugnacious Patsy Kelly. These timeless shorts showcase the incredible comedic talents of an unsung duo who simply wanted to make audiences laugh... and succeeded!
In Hollywood, the laugh factory operated by Roach was known to one and all as "The Lot of Fun." Established in 1915, the studio hosted many of the familiar names in comedy at one time or another: Harold Lloyd, Charley Chase and the popular and iconic team of Laurel and Hardy.
Determined to find the female equivalent of "The Boys," Roach paired Thelma Todd (already under contract and a veteran of several Chase shorts) with comic actress ZaSu Pitts. Thelma and ZaSu appeared in 17 shorts between 1931 and 1933 that were very popular with moviegoers, but their fruitful partnership ended when Pitts and Roach failed to come to terms on a new contract.
After seeing comedienne Patsy Kelly in the stage production of Flying Colors, Roach agreed that she was the perfect replacement for ZaSu, and the new team of Todd-Kelly was soon putting out hilarious efforts like Babes in the Goods (1934), Maid in Hollywood (1934) and Top Flat (1935). All-American Toothache (1936) would be their final pairing as Todd's tragic death brought an end to the girls' entertaining partnership.
Though efforts were made to jump-start the franchise with Pert Kelton and Lyda Roberti, the writing was on the wall where Roach's two-reelers were concerned as the producer soon transitioned solely to "streamliners" and feature films.

I have seen footage of Todd and Kelly and think they clicked better than when Zasu Pitts was involved. Granted, Roach Studios was looking for a female equivalent of Laurel and Hardy at the time. Zasu was about pitying folks with somewhat sarcastic comments while Patsy wowed the audience with her brand of friendly folk humor. Of course, the physical comedy that L&H established in their films would make its way to the Todd and Kelly movies. Thanks for presenting.
Love this DVD set. I love Thelma and Patsy. Their chemistry was great... better than with Zasu in my opinion. Patsy is her boisterous “palsie walsie” whereas Zasu was more timid. They’re both funny. I just feel the chemistry is more dynamic with Patsy. Thanks for making these gems available.
THANK YOU for making these films available for purchase.
Thelma's " oh now you'll do it and you'll like it!" sounded like an adlib lol
This makes me so happy!! I love Patsy Kelly after seeing her in Pigskin Parade and a few of these shorts on UA-cam!, can’t wait to purchase!
I'm currently enjoying going through this collection. It's so good these shorts have finally been given their due. Looking forward to the Thelma Todd/Zasu Pitts set due out in October.
Yep - I pre-ordered mine on Amazon.
Currently trying to find Thelma Todd and Patsy Kelly on DVD but having no luck.
It's currently out of print and we're not sure when we'll be re-pressing them.
Screen Archives has them in stock though: www1.screenarchives.com/title_detail.cfm/ID/37369/COMPLETE-HAL-ROACH-THELMA-TODD-AND-PATSY-KELLY-COMEDY-COLLECTION-3-DISC/
Great collection. I enjoyed this DVD set quite a bit.
Wahhhh thanks for this! I'm a fan of Patsy Kelly
Cute trailer! The old-fashioned presentation is good. Irony: Thelma Todd *was* a terrible driver, just as shown here, and eventually hired a driver.
Also appearing the car with Thelma and Patsy..is the little dog..who worked with L&H in"Laughing Gravy" and"The Bohemian Girl".
Dog was the funniest part.
Funny
Comedy really lost out with the tragic death of Thelma Todd - beautiful, yet could hold her own with the knockabout male comics of the day. Todd & Kelly seemed to make a really good team (especially compared with her time with ZaSu Pitts) and who knows how big they could have been? Maybe features could have been in their future - sadly, we will never know.
LEROY SHIELD RULES THE ROOSTS!
RIP Thelma
RIP every single person in these clips. They've all died. At least Thelma's was peaceful with carbon monoxide.
Marvelous! Wonderful! Stupendous! I would even go as far to say, that it was mediocre!
Pre-Hayes code.
You oughta take off your hat.
Long overdue! But is a bluray edition in the offing?
No. Just DVDs.
I think it's Fantastic that these films are finally available commercially.... I would love to see Thelma Todds films with Harry Langdon and the 1929 Charley Chase films ,get the same treatment.
@@14bonkyb Well, Langdon DVD sets are out now (2021), but 1929 Charley Chase shorts remain M.I.A. "Can't SOMEBODY track those down?!"
Thelma Todd and Zasu Pitts had better chemistry in my opinion.
Where can I buy this??!!

Die Hütchen und die Schleifen damals. Zum Zusammenbrechen komisch.
