Great video. It warms my heart that there are still people out there who care about rental stores. In my country we don't have any videostores anymore and i miss it a lot. Keep up the good work!
People have been brainwashed by advertising to think that "new" is "better" It's not The moment people started making cheap electronics and all this digital crap the world has gone rapid downhill
Sometimes, I feel like they just don't want to believe things are different. It wasn't always this way. At least some people knew what was up. Now everyone is delusional, because they know things aren't getting better.
tbh, I'm a huge online geek but even so I would still prefer to go to a video store then to stream online. Nothing beats a movie night where you get to hang out with your family and friends and just look through movies talking to the staff lol
I'm in Perth too and I have my own Betamax VHS Blu-ray and 4K collection. I love my hobby but it's too bad the VHS rental store era has now passed. I've had some good times as a kid with renting out great stuff. By the way horror and cult are my favourite genre.
Aside covid or even post covid, I see this as a market that could boom. People have grown to have an understanding of being appreciative for the things they once had and one of them is culture through movement and discovery. Traversing to and from the rental store, spending time reading a description and a few images, setting intention to set aside time to watch something very specific instead of endless scrolling to only start and stop a movie if you don't like it. You also ran into neighbors which is something to consider.
Absolutely! Could not agree more. Once the world has returned to normal, it would be great to see everyone getting back out into the physical world and not relying on online services for everything! Thanks for watching! 😁
It was a lot different back then without the online reviews telling people what was a good or bad movie. You came with an open mind if you enjoy the movie or not. It felt like discovery.
i live in the UK and its really sad dvd/video rental stores have closed down here, we used to have a store called Global Video that closed down many years ago i used to love renting old horrors from it, its nice to see stores still exist, even if its in Austrlia! also i noticed Woolworths was also near there that is another store closed down here also!
culture divined there’s something really satisfying about renting a movie that you can physically take home and watch, it’s a feeling you can’t get from clicking “play” on a streaming service! Thanks for watching. 😁👍
I used to work for Global Video, up until they closed in 2006. Easily the most fun job I've ever had. It was so much more than just a rental shop. We used to have regulars who would just come in to chat about movies. It was like a social hub for film fans. My nostalgia for those "good old days" is what brought me to this video 😆
i like the style of the relatively soft spoken guy who runs this channel. Many people speak loudly and have irritating editing. i love the vhs style beginning and his interviews.
Very cool video. From the 80's to the early 2000's i was in one every weekend. Then Netflix and Pirate Bay. These days I tend to watch UA-cam videos. At 44 I still have the attention span of a 12 yr. Anything under 15 minutes perfect.
Thank you so much! I also have the attention span of a teenager, so I can totally relate. But I can’t complain about anyone watching UA-cam videos, so...carry on! 😁 thanks for watching!
Just subscribed. Only just found this channel. You cover a very diverse range of topics. Looking forward to catching up on the previous segments. 😁👍👍👍👍👍
Netflix has lost something like 60% of the content library they had 5 years ago. Even now, half the time I check for something, they don't even have it
I live in the United Kingdom and it would be great if there would be a dvd rental store in forestfach Swansea there would be a lot of people who miss going to a shop & movie lovers alike can go in and rent a movie. 🍿
Awesome stuff mate👍 - And of course I remember video rentals right back to the 80s. And the movie I remember the best is the Cannonball movies.🤪 Here in Norway I do not know about any rental store, but I have taken care of all my rental cards😃 - Thank you so much for this upload🇦🇺🤠🇳🇴 Btw, I still have my VHS videoplayer🎬
I think the trick is to be diverse in your business, and find the additional products/services that you can also provide. Sam, for example, stocks a lot of pop culture items and has a large online presence. Being passionate about movies helps, too, as you can help people find difficult titles and stock obscure media. Thanks for your comment!
I miss video/game rental stores. its nice to some movies released viva redbox though. but those old school movies are not somethnig they put in there. I do wish there were more video stores that survived.
PuppyLuvU2 absolutely agree! I miss the interaction with the store staff, getting personal recommendations rather than suggestions generated by an algorithm. It’s good to get out of the house every so often, too. 😁
There is a small local video store in Caringbah N.S.W that is in the phase of closing down now and are selling all there titles so get a bargain while you can. Absolutely lovely store owners to deal with. @8:15 correct those bastards!
I’m sorry to hear they’re closing down, it’s a shame these businesses don’t always get the support that they deserve. Thanks for watching and commenting. 😁👍
I get why rental stores close, but why movie stores that just sell stuff? I go there to buy and they usually have a muchbeidet collection than Walmart and Target
streaming is really taking away films from you they do not want you to own your own movies , streaming can go to hell , dvd and vhs tapes is the way to go
I worked in a videoezy store for 8 years in victotia and no offense but its only a matter of time before all video stores are gone. Once the media is phased out players dont exist its all over. It might not happen tomorrow but it will have eventually. I can stream nearly any movie i want from streaming apps such as teatv and cimena hd all for free. Its not perfect but its so much easier then going to a store. Not to mention the space need to store a large amount of dvds in a collection.
December 28 2022 I love 📀 dvds I still own & tru out 2023 2024 2025 2026 going to watch dvds you can watch movies when ever the hell you want is simply the best
Slightly awkward timing on this question - the store did survive, until now. Unfortunately it’s in the process of closing down at the moment. You can check them out of Facebook for info directly from the store owners: facebook.com/leadingpopculture/
@@CuriosityMine Thank you for the update, unfortunately so many businesses had to be closed down because of the pandemic. Would you say physical media is dead?
I find it hard to believe that physical media is dead. Cloud based streaming is certainly a fantastic option and a solution to hoarding physical media, but it puts the user’s investment at the whim of the hosting service. If your streaming service goes bust, what guarantee do you have that your purchases will remain accessible? Owning a physical copy is the only way to ensure that, and I can’t see a technological solution to that in the immediate future.
I found this video quite frustrating. Sam doesn't seem to realise that most major streaming services operate under a monthly subscription. If titles were $8 each to stream, video stores would still be a thing. While I admire what Sam has built and accomplished in this digital age, I couldn't help notice that the putrid state of a lot of the DVD cases. It doesn't take much to keep them clean, especially since people would be returning rentals on a daily basis. A quick wipe before going back on the shelf would go far.
Absolutely positively honestly seriously happy new year 2023 to all beautiful positive people let's make buying & owing 📀 dvds above paying for cables & buying Fire sticks & roku boxes all that passwords codes its complicated think 🤔 about it

I loved this! Made me feel hopeful as I own a dvd store in Perth Western Australia and its very tough indeed.
tbh, I'm a huge online geek but even so I would still prefer to go to a video store then to stream online. Nothing beats a movie night where you get to hang out with your family and friends and just look through movies talking to the staff lol

Good on you mate, hopefully you never close. We had a video store too for just over 30 years in seddon. Rip Gamon Video Centre 1983-2014

Btw, I still have my VHS videoplayer🎬
Great choice! 👍
Where I live there aren't any video stores and there is one small arcade. I miss the experience of renting movies and arcades with a bunch of games.
I own the last mom and pop style video store in Texas (US version of Australia). And business is picking up again.
“US version of Australia” - love it! Glad to hear things are improving! Thanks for the comment. 😁👍
I hope business is still going well for you. I also hope younger people are coming in and enjoying the experience and becoming repeat customers.
VHS tapes are the most durable physical media that ever existed.
Also they are an ART form.
Whats not to love about them?
I really want to start up my own video store so badly, but nobody seems to believe in it and it seems so hard to get it going. One day hopefully.

I still buy dvds and blu rays
Video killed the radio star, the internet killed the rental store
And video stores, and malls, and social lives, and decency, and mental health...

I know, it’s a bit unexpected! Thank you for commenting. 👍
@@CuriosityMine Anytime! It was a great interview 😊
The last 2 real video shops in Melbourne have just closed
I get why rental stores close, but why movie stores that just sell stuff? I go there to buy and they usually have a muchbeidet collection than Walmart and Target
Is this place still going?
I wonder if by any chance they have the 🎥 called The Video Dead?
I really enjoyed this vid.Thankyou.
You’re very welcome! Thank you for watching. 👍
streaming is really taking away films from you they do not want you to own
your own movies , streaming can go to hell , dvd and vhs tapes is the way to go
There’s definitely something to be said for owning a physical item, rather than some ethereal piece of digital stuff that could disappear any day.
Its 2021, I wonder If its still around
Can confirm - still exists!
These stores are as important as museums.
I could not agree more! Thanks for your comment. 😁👍

Redbox and streaming will never beat a video rental store .
Absolutely - it's easy to underestimate the importance of physical media and a physical store.
That crappy old slushy machine brings in Customers? Wtf lol
It’s surprisingly appealing on a hot day. 😂
Physical is best
Convenient parking is a thing from past history in the UK 🤦♂️

I think he would be referring to the Amazon prime rental or Apple TV rental
