- Look back at one of the most exciting rides in Breeders' Cup history; Legendary jockey Lester Piggott after six months away, his amazing ride on Royal Academy in the 1990 Mile

Rest in peace, Lester. Not just one of the greatest, THE greatest. A wonderfully skilful horseman. We shall not see his equal.
He is dead but on pure jockeyship he ain't better than Ryan Moore!
Still get goose bumps watching this, simply incredible
Whenever I watch anything about Lester Piggot the memories of my wonderful Grandpa fill me up. He loved his horses and Piggot was his man. I wish I could have one more chat with him now im an adult.
Genius. RIP Lester
Just been back to view this great race win again. The thrill is as
great as ever in July 2024! RIP LP.
R.I.P. Lester, the GOAT..
Rip. Legend doesn’t come close.
what a great jockey!
what a great trainer!
what a great horse!
The best team ever in flat racing producing one of the best finishes ever!
RIP THE GREATEST EVER
The greatest jockey that ever sat on a thoroughbred. Touched by genius, and like all of us, fought his demons.
I can't remember him ever being beaten in a close finish in a big money race.

DEMONS?
Most people knew they could put their wages on Lester!
Arguably the G.O.A.T..
Simply the best
When Royal Academy won this race, Lester Piggot had been riding winners for 42 years. It’s not just the genius of the man it’s the longevity. To stay at the top in a sport that required all human participants to practically starve themselves and require a ‘big’ man like Lester to pretty much give up eating is more than astonishing...
And probably not as appreciated as it should be because it came on the heels of two earlier incidents that BC Day (Mr. Knickerson and Shaker Knit falling in the BC Sprint and Go For Wand falling in front of everyone in the BC Distaff). This race was a half-hour after Go For Wand broke down and fell in the BC Distaff.
this is the best there is the best that was the best that there will ever be

'The Long Fellow' showing a touch of class.
The greatest
All time great jockey
If you watch at the beginning he could have gone inside and got trapped but he pulled R.A. out quickly to the outside masterful jockey when there is big money!!!
Fantastic jockey
at that age and what a ride,a tru legend
Lester was 54 yrs old not 57 as mentioned in the clip....
Fabulous God like timing, similar to the King George at Ascot on the Minstral, mind blowing.
It's unlikely that we will see another jockey like Lester Piggott in our lifetime. In fact I guarantee it.
Agreed. I think his 1972 Derby win on Roberto was a better ride.
Aye?? The man was an utter cunt and thot he was above racing stealing whips of other jocks over use of the whip cunt of cunts
son of wallace COYB...True,he sure knew how to over use the whip, vile man
You never spoke a truer word, Peter O.
I remember Charlottown's Derby very well. He was trained by John Gosden's father Jack 'Towser' Gosden as a two year old, but he retired and Gordon Smyth took over the training of Charlottown as a three year old. It's funny that Charlottown beat Sodium in the Derby, but Sodium turned the tables in the Irish Derby. I think Sodium also beat Charlottown in the St Leger if I remember correctly.
RIP Mr. Piggott
The info about Piggott is seriously wrong. Piggott had retired from riding in 1985 a wekk before his 50th birthday to take up training. After a decent start this went wrong first because of the time spent defending himself against the tax charges, then through a jail sentence and then when his wife who had taken over duties while he was in jail cracked her skull in a riding accident. After serving 366 in jail, Piggott emerged from prison to find his training project in ruins. So he found himself at rather a loose end. So 5 years (not six months) after retiring, he made a comback a few weeks before his 55th birthday. Then a week before that birthday, 10 days afte rthe comeback, he rode Royal Acedemy in the Breeders Cup
Perfect description. I am a massive Piggott fan, and that sums up this incredible story.

I saw this on UK TV at the time - and was nearly hoarse as a result. It is almost a
carbon copy of one of his winning Epsom Derby victories. It is especially
poignant to watch this on the day that it is reported that "The Long Fellow"
has died.....just as anothe Epsom Derby race meeting approaches.
RIP TO THE GOAT
the best never forgets how to do it
Sorry Tommy. This wasn't Lester#s comeback ride. He had a handful of rides before he was offered the ride on Royal Academy and even managed to win one or two in England. But the finest exhibition of horsemanship will never be equaled. Only Lester could have done this.
All geniuses have demons and Lester was a demon in the saddle
"Just serving a little time" lol class wee man!!!
Boy, today, Lester would be suspended in this day and age. Beat that horse across the line!!!! Wow!!
RIP Lester.
RIP Lester who died today.
A goat ride by Lester Piggott, showing all why he was the best of all. What made this win sweeter for me,was knowing that Royal Academy, was a grandson of......Nijinsky.
The Maestro
I was there . I had 1000 sterling on him at 7/1 . backed him in England one week earlier. was a great day

Phenomenal GRH Sir Lester 🏇👏👏👏💯🙏
WOW WOW WOW"🤓
RIP Long Fella
This race occurred a little over a half-hour after Go For Wand broke down and fell in the BC Distaff as she had dueled with Bayakoa (the race winner) all the way before that happened with about a sixteenth to go (IMO, Go For Wand should NEVER have been in that BC Distaff, she should have been in the Classic where she would have run a completely different race coming from well off a speed duel on the front end as a number of horsemen I knew from that time felt it was the stress of Go For Wand chasing Bayakoa, who otherwise wires that BC Distaff easily that caused her to break down in the stretch).
Royal Academy's win in this BC Mile (as well as Unbridled's win later in the day in the BC Classic) was completely overshadowed by what happened with Go For Wand and also Mr. Knickerson and Shaker Knit falling down (Mr. Knickerson due to a heart attack as I remember) during the Breeders' Cup Sprint a little over an hour before the Go For Wand incident and a bit over 90 minutes before this race.
Royal Academy was a great moment for Lestor Piggot that probably isn't appreciated as much as it should be because of people being numb from the two earlier incidents that Breeders' Cup Day.
What’s even more amazing than your facts is:
Half of our current population were not Alive yet.

I didn't bother with horse racing, my dad did! I remember Lester Piggot my dad was a big fan of his If Lester Piggot wasn't the best jockey of his day I never heard of the one who was better. Not surprised he won I hope no one was daft enough to back against him in what must have been a very important race to him He had something to prove and he did it in style Well done Lester Piggot my dad would definitely have backed him. In Lester Piggot's day the use of the whip was largely taken for granted but Lester Piggot did use it a lot and as far as I'm concerned it shamed him
Eileen Ryan one of the greatest jockey of all time i had the privelage of meeting him in bangalore after he won on the indian wonder horse deluge. owned by vijay mallya. he was nearly 57. at that time. a living legend master saddle artist. whip or no whip he was the greatest to don the silks
UPSET??? The only horse to beat Royal Academy that season was Dayjur
TIROL beat him aswell in the Irish 2000 Guineas
Classic thoroughbreds shares
Vincent
O Brien
Lester Robbed
All the shares
I was 1 of them victims
Universe Boss un horse Racing.
Evangelos Keratsas the best of the best. Remember that.
The only man to touch Lester was probably Fred Archer. Gordon Richards had the advantage of riding at 8 stone.
There was NOBODY to touch Lester Piggott.
i agree lee. fred archer was like royalty. 2,748 winners from 8,084 rides. in 1884 he rode 241 winners from just 377 rides. still blows my mind that stat. how good would he have been if he never committed suicide? dead at 29 and arguably the greatest ever, another 10 years and he'd be talked about as the best by a long way.
Pat Eddery
flailing is pretty accurate
elBonzito in fairness , he only flicking him till the last 150yrds when he switched to the backhand ,
its nothing compared to the Abuse horses on track take in America in the modern day !!
No. Four good smacks to keep Royal Academy's interest in the race going.
@@december2364 So Royal Academy hadn't been interested in the race until he started whipping him? 🤔
It was actually poor commentary. Using the term flailing is a little derogatory by the commentator and suggests the jockey’s efforts are in vain.
He was a meanie
Michael Edwards. Not a very nice man but a one off jockey. 9 Epsom derbies alone, absolutely phenomenal.
Lester's wife went to visit him in prison and he gave her the name of a horse and told her to back it for him. When she asked if he wanted to pay the tax on his stake, he replied:
"No don't bother love, I'll just do another week in here".
MICK KINANE AND PAT EDDERY BEST EVER
In general the Irish turn out the best Jockeys for sure but none better Lester or Frankie for that matter although Eddery and Kinane were brilliant!
Kinane's horror show to get Rock of Gibraltar turned over in the BC Mile is enough in itself to rule him out of such an exalted title.
*What was Lester Piggot Like as a person, did he sign autographs, was he popular with the other jockeys and trainers, in the USA there are jockeys with 5500 to 8000 wins, are these American Legends better, was Lester tight with money, did he ever buy a Rolls Royce, was his wife happy, so many unanswered questions, rumours are circulating he was not a pleasant or nice guy to know. In fact, hated amongst fellow Jockeys.*
Those European riders have a real ugly riding style except French and Italian riders, but winning is winning it doesn't matter your style.
Total fixed
Total tit.
Dont get this greatest jockey shit. Style was abysmal. Just sat on the animal. Remember 95% horse 5% jock. He got away with murder. Couldnt stand him. Not rip
Don't be so stupid, race riding is all about tactics and Piggott was the tactician supreme. In this particular race he was riding a sprinter but had the tactical nous and the horsemanship to win on him in an absolutely top class mile race.
@@rickbrown5624 - Mr Pendleton obviously hasn't got a clue about horse racing with a comment like his Rick. He obviously hasn't got any respect for the dead either..
You don't get it because you lack the intelligence to comprehend.
Mr Pendleton I would suggest you look at all of the other jockeys in that finish. Yes they all look streamlined in their two handed driving position however Lester masterfully drives the horse one handed all the way down the stretch whilst expertly focusing his right arm and the whip to get the absolute best out of the horse in the circumstances. He schooled all of them
Rode over 5000 winners worldwide including 30 English Classic races. Was UK champion jockey 11 times and was retained by the likes of Noel Murless, Vincent O'Brien & Henry Cecil. But what did they know?
Sorry but Piggot was no help to the horse. The reaching back and wailing away cost him a length or more. If he would have put his head down and drove the horse it would not have been close. He was a great rider as far as position and touch but not if he was head and head with yards to go.
