I noticed alot of common comments but really know defined answer to this issue. So I went through the comments and wrote down the most brought up issue wich was the throttle body. Then started watching videos based on that. I took it to autozone to confirm. Came back as throttle body sensor. So 2 choices. Buy a new throttle buddy $350 lowest price for my vehicle or clean the one I have. I bought some throttle body cleaner and removed that part. It was totally black. Sprayed and wiped twice and it was shiny gold. Connected back to vehicle and the check engine light is gone. Been driving most of the day off and on and still no tool light no check engine. This fix cost me less than $10( cost of throttle body cleaner) Hope this helps. My situation was pretty much the same as the person that uploaded this video.
This happened to me on my 2008 Edge, brought it to the dealer, this is caused by two sensors in the power train which need to be replaced would cost me $750 to fix, I haven't done the repair yet. This really sucks, I am finding out this problem is very common now in Ford vehicles. We should get a class action lawsuit started.
I think the reason for the conflicting comments is that it is the "check engine" light. I can be coming on for a multitude of reasons. I have a 2010 Fusion Hybrid and the light came on while in Florida. Stayed on the entire week. Fueld at the midpoint in GA. Never came on again for years. Then one day driving at high speed it came on. Went off later. Again a couple of years later, it came on again. It's always in high humidity and heat! My problem does not effect power and always the hybrid wreck comes on first, followed by the gas engine wrench.
The wrench 🔧 light is a tune up spark plugs and coils you have to use the Oem plugs and coils (Motorcraft) After time the aftermarket plugs cause faluty combustion and the car goes into Limp mode. A bad injector can cause this as well for the most part just add Lucas fuel treatment after changing the plugs and coils.
Anyone who have this problem if you have these 2 problems if you brake and it takes time to slow down or if you floor the gas pedal and the response hesitate before the wrech light come it’s your Acceleration position pedal sensor. Most people thing it’s the throttle body but the pedal tells the throttle body how much to open or close. If you have a electrical throttle body. Hope this helps had the same problem with my ford mustang
Be persistent it should be covered under the powertrain warranty plus you could call Ford and ask for the customer satisfaction program a representative there will give you a claim number and you can follow up with them about the repair
@@nathatmed6484 they never admitted to a failure of the electric throttle body much less a recall, there thing is that we have to run a diagnostics check first then they will replace it at no cost to you provided it is still under warranty for the powertrain. I would still follow the steps above and try to take some video of the problem happening so you can have some ammo on your side also look on the web and try to find some corresponding info from others like us. This just happened to me yesterday and I barely made it home. I have not restarted it yet but I hope it is no problem and it will work when I use it next...ugh. I only have 55, 000 miles on my taurus 2008.
i have 07 milan its doing the same exact thing...wrench light then going in and out of gears high revs and jerking motion....is yours still running good? , and was there a recall for the throttle body?...there is a recall for the airbags just so u know...they can kill u w metal shrapnel inside them.
I have a 2006 ford fivehundred that has been doing the same thing , turns out the wiring harness on this model and the 2005 and 2007 runs right across the top of the enging. Over the years the constant heat from the engine had melted wire into in numerous spots and they were touching. It's why it does it going down the road instead of starting that way. Because bumps and holes in the road or whatever tmcan make those wires not touch and when you restart it itll crank up normal. But drive a mile down the road and hit a hole just right and those wires will touch together again and put it back into limp mode.
So I have a 2005 Ford Five Hundred that is randomly doing the exact same thing "engine safe mode" with a wrench. Pulled Codes P2104 Forced Throttle and P2112 Throttle stuck closed so I replaced the throttle body and still doing the same thing. I'm thinking this is also a wiring short or ground that's causing this intermittent issue. I'll check the wire harness that you mentioned to see if it's heat damaged by engine or friction. I have the Ford Edge 2013, Same thing... It was so dangerous. FORD should do a recall of all vehicles that has a problem with the Electronic Throttle Body. Be careful if you have a Ford!!
Before changing the Throttle Body clean it with a Throttle Body cleaner, that could save you $500, and clean the Mass Air Flow sensor (MAF) with a MAF cleaner.

I have the same issue right now with my 2010 Fusion everything is cool when the wrench is not on the dash but as soon as it pops up it just stalls like you don't get no speed it'll barely let you move 10 miles an hour but when I took it to AutoZone they said it was a throttle body and this purge valve I changed both of those and it seemed the car was running fine and then it started up again. and it sucks because I have to be in work tomorrow and today is Sunday so I couldn't take it to no shop because there is no mechanics and after I get this situated I'm probably pretty much done with Ford
tonight while driving my 2008 ford fusion home it happened to me , i have noticed in the past a intermitenet rarely engins stall and refire , suddenly the engine drops to 0 rpm then everything back to normal , like 10 random times during the last 2 years , and now tonight the wrench lights up and every 10 minutes complete loss of power and rpm drop to 0 then sudenly everyting is ok , only 53,000 miles , having a ford sucks , i will never have another ford ever
that's a damm shame it's still under factory warranty, don't give up ! Too bad it's 4th of July weekend , but that's bull shit don't give every time the wrench light turns on it's recorded and is stored as a specific code ! They told me at first that I should bring it in when the wrench light is on , then I retorted by saying HOW IN THE HELL DO YOU WANT ME TOO BRING IT IN IF IT ONLY GOES 5MPH ! I'M NOT DAMAGING MY VEHICLE !
For me I am having the same issue, I have found that if I go over any bumps in the road the check engine and wrench lights come on and I lose all power and can only creep very slowly. With further investigation I realized if I jiggle the cables going to my throttle body I can recreate the problem every time. I have been fighting this battle for months with a dealership, first I paid 800 for new throttle body, I had that refunded now the second dealership tells me it was my PCM, changed that 1200 dollars, still same thing happens. I let them know what I found and they refuse to refund me my 1200 for there shitty service. So a lot of times its just in the connection and nothing actually wrong with the car itself. I had this issue on Friday the wrench light came on with the AWD off light. It crawled at almost a nonexistent speed. It's sitting at the mechanics shop now and he is stumped due to it not having any codes stored. I'm hoping he can figure it out. I don't even want to think about taking it to Ford 🙄
Its your ignition coils they are bad, or cracked Giving it a bad signal to transmission, if the transmission is doing weird stuff, and the wrench light comes on and the the traction control light the coils are the problem
I have a Ford Fusion 2006, this happened to me as I was getting on the freeway in my city. I was doing about 70 and then the vehicle jolted and almost stopped running and my car slipped on ice and swerved into the right lane where a semi was. I was close to hitting it, I'm still pretty shaken up. What can be done? What happened with your vehicle? I read somewhere that this is a safety issue and ford can get a lawsuit filed if they don't fix it???
if I were you I would take it in right away , everyone out there will be glad to know the even if you have a 2009 like my Escape the Electronic Throttle Body will be extended to another 10 years so in my case it is still covered till 2019 , don't be fooled this is a bigger problem than Ford would like to admit, the reason it is not a all out FACTORY RECALL is because Ford got a jump on it and layed it out as a customer service /safety program , in your case 2016 should be covered till 2026
If the wrench light comes on it’s a powertrain malfunction. You will experience severe issues with engine power if that light comes on. So essentially you’ll barely be able to move.

I have only had the car 2 years and a couple months!! I called Ford customer service and of course they did nothing because there is not a recall for my vehicle

There might be couple reasons for this . 1- If you have ford hybrid most probably it is mecs coolant pump. 110 bucks under the engine easy to fix. 2- If your vehicle is not hybrid it is still coolant pump but you need to check your coolant level first. 3- It might be throttle body. If it is throttle body DONT TRY TO CLEAN AND REPLACE by yourself because you will need expensive scan tool to recalibration. I am writing this and in las t 2 hours it happened to me 3 times. My car is 2012 lincoln mkz hybrid. My car is 256 000 miles. Btw I still can drive more than 40 miles between restarts. I ordered the part and will change asap

Crankshaft position sensor 20ish dollars replace it then drive around with ac on but do stop and go city like driving 20ish mph nothing fast like for ten minutes to let the brain relearn the new part then your good to go

I do the same thing it does it everytime i drive it and come to a complete stop. The car goes into like a limp mode and if i turn it of and back on it goes away and drives fine unless its hot then it acts like it is slipping until you get up to atleast 5 or 10 mph and it will grab and drive fine again so confused it has got me stumped
@@dylwillonewheel7614 My Freestyle has been doing the same thing. At first I would turn it off and on and problem solved. Now the light will stay on until I park for a long time, like overnight. On cold days I can drive a lot and the light will not come on, unless I am in heavy traffic or long traffic lights. This tells me that temperature has something to do with it, even if the engine temperature shows normal levels at all times. In any event, the moment that light comes on the car starts to act up, with jerky motion and high RPM required for 35 MPH (2,000 RPM). It has some other issues but I keep driving it.

I actually had my son put a brand new one on and then it's still having problems but I had it put on a scope and they're saying transmission like a bunch of words sensors came up and he says I knew it need a whole new transmission it didn't sound right to me because that's not the way it was acting once I wrench light was off at shifted fine
I put a brand new throttle on also and it didn’t stop the problem... also changed an o2 sensor and a cam sensor and also a map sensor still the same problem happens.... I don’t think it’s the trans because wen the wrench light is not on everything is fine

My 2010 Ford Escape did the same damn thing and it happens like 2-5 times a Day. I took my car in for service, i paid $80 because the mechanic said it was the throttle body. Mind you, before i went there, i stop by at Autozone to check the engine light. It came back with fuel pump issue. Code P455 P457. After the auto service fix my car, it was about 4 miles, it work perfectly fine... As i enter into the freeway, wrench light screaaaaam again. 😭 i can barely run 5 mph. Turn off, on, it went back to normal. I do thing its really the fuel hose, something to do with gas. I spend $229 today. I'll take it in to fix my EVAP or replace the fuel hose and we'll see if it puts an end to this.

I took my mustang to autozone and I got EVAP very small leak detected error P0456. I still didn’t do anything about it but my issue is that when it happens I can’t accelerate at all. The pedal just stops responding unlike others who say they can move slow. So after u got it cleaned the same issue happened after u reached 60mph or the car didn’t let u accelerate past 60? I’m very worried. You think I should try to clean the throttle first or just get a new one right away?

take it to your dealer make sure you record it like I did and if they say you need to bring it in with the check engine light on that's b.s. cuz the computer will keep a record of engine faults plus you have it on video. All Escapes from 2008 thus 2014 should be covered for this at no charge

WOW so many different explanations, it's obvious this wrench light indicates a whole world of different issues. I have a 2008 Ford Escape V-6 and I bought it with the wrench light on for $1000 thought it was a good deal ( AND IT IS ) so just need to get it fixed. With my truck it seems to be the shifting is the issue , it doesn't shift properly from stop and go but once I'm over 50km's an hour it drives like a normal vehicle easily reaching 120km or more even up the steepest mountains here in British Columbia Canada. hmmmmmmm something so small can cause so much grief to all of us lol.. I'm on the Island right but I live up over the Coquihalla but I haven't had my truck fixed yet because it drives fine and personally it doesn't concern me all that much. I've very much mechanically inclined so myself and another mechanic friend have determined it's not going to hurt my truck driving it this way... Chalk it up to being too busy but more likel procrastination hahahaha. Hope you don't have any issue's.

Sorry guys. I replaced the Brake ABS module, Transmision module, rebuilt the Transmision and all brake, ABS, Traction control lights still on but car is drivable since rebuilding Tranny. Only had 50k miles on it so let’s see how it goes. Very disappointed in Ford and the quality of this.

Katie they will be covered for the electric throttle body if that is the problem . My Escape never really lunged into gear but if it happens again I would take it in and demand they change out the ETB , then it adds another 10 year warranty for the electric throttle body. carlos16822@att.net if you need help 😉
Ive owned ford for over 15 years and been surrounded by fords for 30 years. ford has had terrible electronics since 1993 era and the more electronics you throw at it the shittier they become. Ive had new f150s, new escapes, new ford five hundreds several rangers. Only great vehicle ford ever made was the 01-06 or so f250 with the 7.3l diesel. my 2012 f150 is not worth the tires it sits on. if i could only afford a tundra, ford has cheap baseline vehicles but after experiencing same issues in sedans to trucks to suvs its a common problem. I blame the investors sucking the funds out of the company they need to pull out of the stock market entirely and frankly i hope everyone invested in them loses their retirement! Your not the only one anyway. too bad ford and gM own NHSI and DOE who commonly discredit smaller manufactures as not having good enough emissions and not safe enough to drive, yet fords throttle body is responsible for several deaths including a few kids hit by their own parents car that rev'ed out of control forward. Go ford like a real american company kills and abuses its own customers.
I have 2016 Explorer with 4800 mile. orange wrench and engine light came on. could only travel at idle speed. Ford not very responsive. clised gor 4th. no one would help. "bring it in 5 july", today is the 2nd.
The same thing happens to my explorer 2006 v8 4x4 and after you go alot of the ligths star to turn on what the hell ford cant find the problem really first they said body troddle, them speed sensor and then pedal now they saying its the abs WTF what should I do
I have a 2009 ford focus ses and my wrench light is on an engine light and when you turn car off then back on its gone but comes right back. I put a new throttle body I bought a new air flow sensor. An still same problem
@@dylwillonewheel7614 ditto for me. Just recently started. Car runs rough when putting into gear after wrench comes on. If i put car back into park and shut off/turn back on, it then runs ok. Might try resetting the cars computer using the technique mentioned by Fordtechmakuloco on UA-cam....to relearn calibration. Might also try removing throttle body unit and cleaning it. Hoping this isn't an actual transmission issue......car doesn't seem to have obvious transmission issues.
I have an 08 mustang GT it just started doing this I start the car and at idle the wrench will never pop up but as soon as I shift into first gear and start moving it comes on and Boggs the car down but since mines a manual I can drive it around I can still do about 80 on the highway still but it’s just A LOT slower does anyone know if this is a serious issue or if it’s just some stupid sensor that’s causing the computer in the car to have a panic attack

This doesn't happen to all. It has to be 09 and above. My mom has a 2010 Escape and this has happened to her. I have a 08 but never heard of this.

Its is most likely the Electronic Throttle body. Had the same problem in my 06 Milan and that was the issue. Took me about an hour to change.

i have 07 milan its doing the same exact thing...wrench light then going in and out of gears high revs and jerking motion....is yours still running good? , and was there a recall for the throttle body?...there is a recall for the airbags just so u know...they can kill u w metal shrapnel inside them.
I have a 2006 ford fivehundred that has been doing the same thing , turns out the wiring harness on this model and the 2005 and 2007 runs right across the top of the enging. Over the years the constant heat from the engine had melted wire into in numerous spots and they were touching. It's why it does it going down the road instead of starting that way. Because bumps and holes in the road or whatever tmcan make those wires not touch and when you restart it itll crank up normal. But drive a mile down the road and hit a hole just right and those wires will touch together again and put it back into limp mode.

So I have a 2005 Ford Five Hundred that is randomly doing the exact same thing "engine safe mode" with a wrench. Pulled Codes P2104 Forced Throttle and P2112 Throttle stuck closed so I replaced the throttle body and still doing the same thing. I'm thinking this is also a wiring short or ground that's causing this intermittent issue. I'll check the wire harness that you mentioned to see if it's heat damaged by engine or friction. I have the Ford Edge 2013, Same thing... It was so dangerous. FORD should do a recall of all vehicles that has a problem with the Electronic Throttle Body. Be careful if you have a Ford!!
Before changing the Throttle Body clean it with a Throttle Body cleaner, that could save you $500, and clean the Mass Air Flow sensor (MAF) with a MAF cleaner.

I have the same issue right now with my 2010 Fusion everything is cool when the wrench is not on the dash but as soon as it pops up it just stalls like you don't get no speed it'll barely let you move 10 miles an hour but when I took it to AutoZone they said it was a throttle body and this purge valve I changed both of those and it seemed the car was running fine and then it started up again. and it sucks because I have to be in work tomorrow and today is Sunday so I couldn't take it to no shop because there is no mechanics and after I get this situated I'm probably pretty much done with Ford

I had this issue one day. It was due to a blown ABS fuse. I replaced it and the light went off.
tonight while driving my 2008 ford fusion home it happened to me , i have noticed in the past a intermitenet rarely engins stall and refire , suddenly the engine drops to 0 rpm then everything back to normal , like 10 random times during the last 2 years , and now tonight the wrench lights up and every 10 minutes complete loss of power and rpm drop to 0 then sudenly everyting is ok , only 53,000 miles , having a ford sucks , i will never have another ford ever
that's a damm shame it's still under factory warranty, don't give up ! Too bad it's 4th of July weekend , but that's bull shit don't give every time the wrench light turns on it's recorded and is stored as a specific code ! They told me at first that I should bring it in when the wrench light is on , then I retorted by saying HOW IN THE HELL DO YOU WANT ME TOO BRING IT IN IF IT ONLY GOES 5MPH ! I'M NOT DAMAGING MY VEHICLE !
For me I am having the same issue, I have found that if I go over any bumps in the road the check engine and wrench lights come on and I lose all power and can only creep very slowly. With further investigation I realized if I jiggle the cables going to my throttle body I can recreate the problem every time. I have been fighting this battle for months with a dealership, first I paid 800 for new throttle body, I had that refunded now the second dealership tells me it was my PCM, changed that 1200 dollars, still same thing happens. I let them know what I found and they refuse to refund me my 1200 for there shitty service. So a lot of times its just in the connection and nothing actually wrong with the car itself. Hope this helps. Ps if anyone can make a video of how to fix this it would be great.

I had this issue on Friday the wrench light came on with the AWD off light. It crawled at almost a nonexistent speed. It's sitting at the mechanics shop now and he is stumped due to it not having any codes stored. I'm hoping he can figure it out. I don't even want to think about taking it to Ford 🙄

Its your ignition coils they are bad, or cracked Giving it a bad signal to transmission, if the transmission is doing weird stuff, and the wrench light comes on and the the traction control light the coils are the problem
Throttle body. Make sure you recalibrate the new one.

I have a Ford Fusion 2006, this happened to me as I was getting on the freeway in my city. I was doing about 70 and then the vehicle jolted and almost stopped running and my car slipped on ice and swerved into the right lane where a semi was. I was close to hitting it, I'm still pretty shaken up. What can be done? What happened with your vehicle? I read somewhere that this is a safety issue and ford can get a lawsuit filed if they don't fix it???
if I were you I would take it in right away , everyone out there will be glad to know the even if you have a 2009 like my Escape the Electronic Throttle Body will be extended to another 10 years so in my case it is still covered till 2019 , don't be fooled this is a bigger problem than Ford would like to admit, the reason it is not a all out FACTORY RECALL is because Ford got a jump on it and layed it out as a customer service /safety program , in your case 2016 should be covered till 2026

If the wrench light comes on it’s a powertrain malfunction. You will experience severe issues with engine power if that light comes on. So essentially you’ll barely be able to move.

1- If you have ford hybrid most probably it is mecs coolant pump. 110 bucks under the engine easy to fix.
2- If your vehicle is not hybrid it is still coolant pump but you need to check your coolant level first.
3- It might be throttle body. If it is throttle body DONT TRY TO CLEAN AND REPLACE by yourself because you will need expensive scan tool to recalibration.

Crankshaft position sensor 20ish dollars replace it then drive around with ac on but do stop and go city like driving 20ish mph nothing fast like for ten minutes to let the brain relearn the new part then your good to go

I do the same thing it does it everytime i drive it and come to a complete stop. The car goes into like a limp mode and if i turn it of and back on it goes away and drives fine unless its hot then it acts like it is slipping until you get up to atleast 5 or 10 mph and it will grab and drive fine again so confused it has got me stumped
@@dylwillonewheel7614 My Freestyle has been doing the same thing. At first I would turn it off and on and problem solved. Now the light will stay on until I park for a long time, like overnight.
On cold days I can drive a lot and the light will not come on, unless I am in heavy traffic or long traffic lights. This tells me that temperature has something to do with it, even if the engine temperature shows normal levels at all times.
In any event, the moment that light comes on the car starts to act up, with jerky motion and high RPM required for 35 MPH (2,000 RPM). It has some other issues but I keep driving it.

I actually had my son put a brand new one on and then it's still having problems but I had it put on a scope and they're saying transmission like a bunch of words sensors came up and he says I knew it need a whole new transmission it didn't sound right to me because that's not the way it was acting once I wrench light was off at shifted fine
I put a brand new throttle on also and it didn’t stop the problem... also changed an o2 sensor and a cam sensor and also a map sensor still the same problem happens.... I don’t think it’s the trans because wen the wrench light is not on everything is fine

My 2010 Ford Escape did the same damn thing and it happens like 2-5 times a Day. I took my car in for service, i paid $80 because the mechanic said it was the throttle body. Mind you, before i went there, i stop by at Autozone to check the engine light. It came back with fuel pump issue. Code P455 P457. After the auto service fix my car, it was about 4 miles, it work perfectly fine... As i enter into the freeway, wrench light screaaaaam again. 😭 i can barely run 5 mph. Turn off, on, it went back to normal. I do thing its really the fuel hose, something to do with gas. I spend $229 today. I'll take it in to fix my EVAP or replace the fuel hose and we'll see if it puts an end to this.

Mine is fixed, First they clean the throttl body, I brought my car home, When i entered the Freeway, the same thing happen, however this time, it was a lot better than before.
for instance, Red lights, I cant even gas my car like everyone else but after they clean it, i was able to.... I just cant run over 60mph,....
I took it back, He said my car need a NEW throttle body....So when i brought back my car this time, No issue happened lately.

I took my mustang to autozone and I got EVAP very small leak detected error P0456. I still didn’t do anything about it but my issue is that when it happens I can’t accelerate at all. The pedal just stops responding unlike others who say they can move slow. So after u got it cleaned the same issue happened after u reached 60mph or the car didn’t let u accelerate past 60? I’m very worried. You think I should try to clean the throttle first or just get a new one right away?

take it to your dealer make sure you record it like I did and if they say you need to bring it in with the check engine light on that's b.s. cuz the computer will keep a record of engine faults plus you have it on video. All Escapes from 2008 thus 2014 should be covered for this at no charge

WOW so many different explanations, it's obvious this wrench light indicates a whole world of different issues.
I have a 2008 Ford Escape V-6 and I bought it with the wrench light on for $1000 thought it was a good deal ( AND IT IS ) so just need to get it fixed.
With my truck it seems to be the shifting is the issue , it doesn't shift properly from stop and go but once I'm over 50km's an hour it drives like a normal vehicle easily reaching 120km or more even up the steepest mountains here in British Columbia Canada.

I'm on the Island right but I live up over the Coquihalla but I haven't had my truck fixed yet because it drives fine and personally it doesn't concern me all that much. I've very much mechanically inclined so myself and another mechanic friend have determined it's not going to hurt my truck driving it this way... Chalk it up to being too busy but more likel procrastination hahahaha.

Sorry guys. I replaced the Brake ABS module, Transmision module, rebuilt the Transmision and all brake, ABS, Traction control lights still on but car is drivable since rebuilding Tranny. Only had 50k miles on it so let’s see how it goes. Very disappointed in Ford and the quality of this.

Ive owned ford for over 15 years and been surrounded by fords for 30 years. ford has had terrible electronics since 1993 era and the more electronics you throw at it the shittier they become. Ive had new f150s, new escapes, new ford five hundreds several rangers. Only great vehicle ford ever made was the 01-06 or so f250 with the 7.3l diesel. my 2012 f150 is not worth the tires it sits on. if i could only afford a tundra, ford has cheap baseline vehicles but after experiencing same issues in sedans to trucks to suvs its a common problem. I blame the investors sucking the funds out of the company they need to pull out of the stock market entirely and frankly i hope everyone invested in them loses their retirement! Your not the only one anyway. too bad ford and gM own NHSI and DOE who commonly discredit smaller manufactures as not having good enough emissions and not safe enough to drive, yet fords throttle body is responsible for several deaths including a few kids hit by their own parents car that rev'ed out of control forward. Go ford like a real american company kills and abuses its own customers.

Might try resetting the cars computer using the technique mentioned by Fordtechmakuloco on UA-cam....to relearn calibration. Might also try removing throttle body unit and cleaning it. Hoping this isn't an actual transmission issue......car doesn't seem to have obvious transmission issues.
