-- 2009 Ford Escape electric power steering unit has a relay board. When the relay gets old, then it only works intermittently. Relay board is NOT sold separately. You must replace the whole unit. Junk yards sell them for about $150. They are fairly easy to replace .... If steering doesn't work. Turn car off. Count to 30. Turn key switch on. Count to 30. Start car. Relay gets slow to click on when old, so go through the starting procedure slowly like described, and often times the relay will kick on.
Thank you so much for posting this video! I had just taken my car to the shop because of the steering wheel and decided to google the issue as I waited and saw your video, but because you mentioned there was a recall, I was able to figure out that my car under recall so I told the shop to hold/stop work on it to take it to Ford. Thanks again!
Thank you so much! We took a road trip from KC to North Dakota, and now driving from North Dakota to Iowa and THIS just happened. Now you can imagine... In the middle of no fun**ing where how scary that can be!
My mother's 2011 Escape did this to me last night after a 45 minute drive on the freeway with no issues. No dash lights came on, no warning. I came up to the freeway exit and was going to turn right and bam! Steering was incredibly HARD, I'm amazed I got home in one piece! I hadn't turned the vehicle off and then on again (like you did in this video), it happened during my drive.
@@harveyib114 Thank you! I had my daughter with me so it was extra scary! I thought the vehicle used steering fluid so I was able to get into the parking lot for Walgreens and bought fluid but then opened the hood to see no steering fluid reservoir and then looked up some info about it. When I started it up again, the steering was fine. My boyfriend sent me your video. We're going to call Ford, my mom has a recall notice about some other part/issue so she's going to bring this up. I also have a Ford 2011 Escape, hers has 6 cylinder and mine has 4 so they are different models. I'm scared to drive either vehicle now, Ford needs to recall all of these vehicles, I could have easily gotten into an accident and am thankful it didn't happen on the freeway >.
Thank you! That just happened to me on the way home. I ran for the fluid.... No power steering fluid reservoir in my Escape. Now I know it's electrical.
2009 Escape: On 07/2014 Ford dealer performed Open Campaign 14S05 Electric Power Steering "checked for DTC's and reprogrammed the PSCM and IC Module". Mid-2017: Intermittent power steering failure, normally identified when started the Escape. Sometimes power steering returned after restarting. 7/2017: Problem STOPPED after alternator replaced by independent shop (they thought reason was related to better electrical system performance). 8/2018: Intermittent power steering failures returned, with one failure while driving. Have to drive with no power steering when it won't reset. With the number of these failures documented online, amazed no Ford/NHTSA safety recall for Ford to address this!
I have this same issue with my 2011. Now happening frequently. Thank you for this info. I hope you were able to get your vehicle fixed. I will definitely go to my local dealer to inquire about service and make a stink if not addressed. This is ridiculous. It has happened in my car a few times through the last few years but is now a big issue. Happening more and more. It is a real danger. You are driving along and the power steering just stops working. Be careful.
Well today I reached my boiling point, I have a 2009 Ford Escape. In my case I did get the letter for the recall about the electric power steering. I took the car in October because they send me a second letter advising me to take the car to a near dealership, telling that if an accident occurred without this taking care, I will be responsible. Since second letter was more aggressive make me worried and I took it. Well they call me 3 hours later telling me that my car was ready. I ask if they took care of the recall and they told me yes. Couple weeks later my car started to act up out of nowhere it started to shake on the steering wheel, but stop by about 3 days later. in the middle of march the shake started again and was at all times this time. I start to look into it and research the problem and find out that it was the power steering. I went back to the dealership that suppose fix the problem and when I drop the car I found that they never change anything, what they did was reprogram as they told me, not that I believe it. Well they told me that it need to be reprogram again, so I leave the car again. This time they call me 20 minutes after I drop it, telling me that this time is not part of the recall, that this time is the steering column that's was the reason my steering wheel was shaking. they told me that it will cost me 1200 to fix it. I declined and pick up the car letting them know that I know the real problem. I contact ford and let them know what happened, and they told me that my case with the recall was closed because I took it the first time and my car didn't have the malfunctioning when they check it. I told them that wasn't what they told me at the dealership when I took it the first time. they told me that at the moment when I took it if the car didn't show any problems they just upgrade the code and because it show in their system, my recall case closed. they told me that they will put this into there data system and if it any more problems with more customers they will recall it again. Well the end result is now I don't have power steering in my car because of the recall and ford telling me that sorry for my luck, that I should take the car when the problem was there not when they send me a letter telling me that if I cause an accident they not responsible. Now saying all this we need to get together and with everyone here been together get a lawyer and really make a case. We cannot let ford get away with this. Hope we can do this, I'm willing to spend my time and start a petition that way we can sing and make the difference. I do have paperwork and I been documenting everything including the conversation with the personal of ford. Together we will make ford acknowledge this....
Mar Mer Yes, I am willing. Im glad you recorded the conversation. They need to fix the issue and reimburse those who have paid out of pocket. They are being cheap, stubborn and have no respect for loyal customers. except when they are trying to sell them a car.
How many people in here want to get action about this??? reply and let me know. K Smith have videos that we need to subscribe. I'm also with post a video this week also. find a local news in your area and let them know about us. I'm going to share this in all video related to this problems. call this number 18664367332. This is ford customer relationship center. document the conversation you have with them. even when they tells you you don't have a recall, dont worry this will be prove that they will not want to help. LET'S DO THIS..... TOGETHER WE WILL MAKE THE DIFFERENCE....
I'll NEVER purchase another Ford Motor Company product ever again. They quoted me $1500.00 for a new electric steering rack because Ford refused to honor their product with 50K miles on a bad power steering issue.
2011 Ford Escape - I was just quoted $2400 - they won't honor because the even though it was produced at the Kansas City Plant - they say he wasn't built in the time frame they they suggested - ended September 2010...so if 2010 is when they produced the 2011, I am completely stumped as to why my 2011 isn't covered under the recall. Always thought a recall was a recall.
I’ve had this issue with a ‘12 Ford Fusion. It was “fixed” under a recall and has happened 4 or 5 times since. Right now it’s sitting at the shop needing a $1200 steering rack replacement.
I have the same issue on my 2011 Ford Escape... There is a trick that works for me. I turn the wheel to the left and give some gas while starting and power steering will turn on... I have a lose serpentine belt, maybe it causes something ... Since the power steering is electric I think when I rev up it gives some electric boost than let the power steering start correctly... I have some play in the wheel, I think replacing the U joint can probably help. For others with power steering problems, please know that some people have been able to remove only the power steering motor without removing the full steering column and it has fixed all their problems. Find a power steering motor and replace only that. Don't buy the full steering column. There is a video on UA-cam on how to replace only the power steering motor easily...
My friend has a Ford Focus and it has this same problem. The shop wants $2900 to fix it. Ford has apparently put in this new system saving them money on the build side but screwing the customers later on. They must fix this problem. I wonder how many people have died as a result of losing power steering while driving. This is why lawyers are needed to make them accountable for their actions.
I have a 2009 mercury mariner premier. Same thing as an escape. Having the same issue. Very dangerous. Ford has lost my business FOREVER. I have had so many issues with this vehicle... recalls and things that should be recalls. Thank you for this video.
Tracey Smith this should be reported to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.
I hear you all. I to have a 2009 Ford Escape Hybrid and the Steering Column is starting to fail. The day I take the SUV in for another issue with the key assembly failure and as I was backing out my garage, bingo, steering reminded me of my Grandparents old 1950s car without power steering. At ford, they conduct Diagnostic and sure enough, $1400 for new Assembly. On ride home, no issues, at Ford, no issues. Steering Column Assembly must not be communicating to axle.
I have that same power steering fault issue happened on Christmas day. It was recalled in 2014 and repaired by the previous owner. They refuse to fix a recall twice and is charging over two grands for repairs
This is happening to my escape (2014) and when I called ford, since my VIN doesn’t match up with the recall VINs, it’s all on me. Seriously? Clearly multiple other people are having the same issue, how many people will have to get in accidents before they extend the recall?
My Ford Fusion Hybrid is the same, they say my Vin is not on a recall though the electronic steering assist has gone out twice and has cost a small fortune to fix.
Thanks for the concise and to the point video. I have a 2008 Mazda Tribute with a issue that's behaving a bit differently with the steering. It jerks to the side and there is a dead zone in the middle.
Thanks bro was thinking that but I've changed it 3 times now I'm guessing it's getting changed a 4 time I was a little worried it was the rack this time and thank you for your reply
@@timmydgrows4729 you should be able to tell, if you rotate the steering wheel, there should be no play in the u joints. If the joint itself has play it is bad. Good luck
I have a 2012 Ford Escape. *Power steering issues *Door latch issues I can definitely relate to this issue. The steering wheel locks up while driving and car has to be turned off and then on again for vehicle to turn in direction driver would like to go. Along with that, these vehicles have door latch issues. The door latch doesn't latch on my car. My door also flys open while driving and refuses to close. It is a shame that 2012 year model has not been recalled as this is the only year that does not have recall for this issue with this Ford model. THIS IS A HUGE SAFETY MALFUNCTION.
@@jealkrl7 I ordered a part from Ford and replaced it. However, I still noticed not too long (less than a year later) the steering wheel locks up issue persists.
Good luck I thought with the Ford and the national transportation safety that does the recalls and he told me in a nice way go screw myself all day on the phone with Ford and people that put out the recalls best of luck for a lawsuit good luck they have too many loopholes so Ford is protected and they’re not liable do you have a look up your vehicle and make sure it’s not made in that plant pretty much it’s a simple fix if it does it intermittently clear the codes and re-calibrate it with a scanner not just any scanner advance pro scanner just got function testing recalibration abilities
My 2017 locked up on me mid turn. Luckily no traffic was coming too fast. OMG...was so scary. Called my dealership and they said another red escape has a recall but not mine. She explained and I understood, but come on. Really! Lives are being threatened and since no previous complaints or by Ford its all on me. That really sucks!
Same issue here. I paid for the repairs, and 2 months later the same problems re-surfaced. Now, the steering fails when I'm driving, and is progressively doing it more often.
Have an issue with my 09 mariner premier. Loud clunking/clicking noise while driving and making a turn. Replaced rack and pinion, cv shafts, stem joint, that sensor you shown and still cannot figure out what the issue is.
My pops has a 2012 xlt Escape and just started having issues with his EAPS rack and pinion not returning after a turn is completed as a normal working power steering assembly does. It's not as bad as your situation but still almost caused a couple accidents. Also his was built at the Kansas city plant.
This is the problem I am having now with my 2014 Ford escape titanium. When I turn to the right it feels like the right wheel doesn't turn back as quick as jt should. I thought the lugnuts were loose or something but I checked that and it's fine. The problem is getting progressively worse in the last two weeks. What do you think I should do? I am a single women. I have more knowledge about cars than a lot of women I think (I change my own oil, tires, and can figure out the issues usually) I'm thinking this is the rack and pinion. The steering wheel is also making an obvious rubbing noise when I turn the wheel especially when parallel parking or just straightening out the wheel after pulling I to a parking place, I know it isnt normal. Tha k you for any advice you are able to offer. ✌️
smart choice. 3 fords, 1 mercury (same thing isn't it?). Mother owned 5. Not once using 8 vehicles inside of one families experience has the Ford motor company designed an automobile without constant electrical issues. Henry Ford should have stuck with the reliable model T.
I bought a 2008 Ford Escape with no power steering. I took it to the Ford dealership knowing I might pay for for a whole column or atleast the same sensor shown in this video. The tech updated the codes in the car and that's all it took for it to work correctly. I've had no problems with it since.
My 2009 Ford Escape is doing the same thing. They said there is not a recall for this problem on mine. My throttle body went out but they wouldn't fix that because even though it's recalled I'm over 150,000 miles. Something else is saying to check fuel Inlet which might mean that the purge valve is bad. I also have a oil leak and my oil light is on. I have not had this vehicle for one full year yet and I have had nothing but problem after problem. I I have always heard bad things about Ford and I guess I just had to see it for myself! By the way these problems are not only on the Ford Escape I've heard similar problems are also on the Ford Explorer, the Mercury Mariner, Ford Fusion, Ford Flex, Ford Edge, and probably some other cars that I can't remember. I would be very careful before you buy any Ford products!
Just bought a 2009 Mariner a couple months ago and I would still fall under the recall requirements of mileage and and the year to have it fixed but for some reason mines not on the recall list either. Obviously considering it’s the same issue that I’m having as the ones that were recalled it should be covered. I can’t afford to fix it so what damage besides it being dangerous to drive could happen if I drive it like this? Mine hasn’t done it while driving it’s like yours in the video it happens when I start it I either have it or I don’t but today when it happened I had it for a couple seconds and the all of a sudden the wheel spun out of my hands like a rubber band unwinding and it was tight again. So frustrating!!
My 05 Escape Hybrid just did the same thing was told it wasn't under warranty BS!! This is a issue that is becoming all to regular and Ford needs to address and fix this problem immediately. My car came out of the Kansas City Missouri plant. How many other owners cars came from this plant and have steering wheel issues?
Did this part fix the issue? I’m looking to fix it man cause it happened on the way to work . Definitely don’t have the budget for a new car so I’m kinda stuck having to fix it
My 2012 Ford Escape has been doing this off and on for at least a year. When it locks up, it will not budge an inch!! Very scary!!! I turn it off and back on and it usually works, but lately, one time, it took 5 minutes to get it to work. Mechanics said whole column needs replaced quoting me almost $2,000. Other videos and person said it's a torque sensor. There are videos on how to replace those. Much cheaper.
Sorry, I didn't see your message til now. It resolved for awhile and has been doing it again lately. It helps to make sure tires match, have equal air pressure and there are no issues with ball joints, control arms, etc. I got those things fixed and that worked for awhile. Now, it's doing it again. @@ReasonShrestha
Having this issue right now, had the entire electric steering column replaced 3 months ago and it went out again today. Same thing, no power steering, only manual. $1400 down the drain.
Mine does this . Used to fix itself after turn car off then back on but now I need to do that a few times. I noticed when I open door then close door and try to start it kicks in. Super annoying
My 2009 escape has this problem. I was getting ready to leave this morning and pulled out of driveway and almost drove off opposite side of road while making a sharp right turn. I can drive it but very hard steering. Sounds like this is common. Hopefully they will fix mine. Haven’t checked yet
9496Tull yes same thing happened to me I have a 2009 Ford Escape 😩😩😩 hopefully ford , Will fix it but I never received no letters or anything like that .
Rene Mosqueda same here. Haven’t took to dealer yet. It happened twice, and hasn’t happened again yet. But I know it will. It sucks, they should fix all since so many are affected.
This is why I will never buy another Ford. My 2012 Focus kept getting EPAS failure. The EPAS is a non repairable assembly and costs $1,000 plus labor. Help us Ralph Nader.
I have a 2012 Ford escape and I'm having this issue but I turn it off and it comes back on just once but I had my windshield replaced that had the sticker for which plant it was assembled at but could it be this issue or something else?
Is happening now to my fiance's 2014 Escape. It went out for a while, then worked for a while, rinse, repeat. We're in the not working mode for quite a while now. He's learned to drive with it like that. I thought the quote was around $2K to have it fixed.
@@redbear9943 It happened on our move to Florida from Michigan (that was fun), three years ago. There were months it worked fine and then months it didn’t. I looked up the part yesterday and it was about $1200 but that was the entire column with the sensor and motor and everything. There’s another video discussing swapping it all out, not just the sensor which may or may not be the problem. I told my fiancé to save a bit and then we’re fixing it. I changed his rotors and brakes last weekend, this is definitely do-able ourselves. As long as there’s a video tearing apart the column, I can follow directions and do it. I’d buy the vehicle and do it myself if it was a good price. It’s unfortunate Ford won’t do a recall, it’s a known problem.
@@lisao3041 thanks for the feedback! & yeah I was thinking about buying one for 2000$ CAD with 130k km on it. But after doing research people been talking about a sensor problem so I'm thinking maybe if you don't get that checked right away once you notice hard steering problems you'll most likely be looking to replace your whole steering column because I noticed these fords don't take power steering fluid which most vehicles do

I got the error on my cluster and my power steering stopped. I plugged in my Blue Driver code reader, got the B2278 code. I was able to clear the code and now it now works.
How did you do that? I have a 2011 Ford Escape what was not on recall but also out of Kansas Plant and this just happened to me while driving. I am also a mother of 3, thankfully my kids weren't in the car!
My daughter and grand daughter almost died and took out another family going 59 mph down hiway and powersteering cut out and crossed center line into oncoming traffic at rush hour. This is bullshit that they never recalled all these tributes. This a 2008 with 100k on it
I had this problem fixed by my Mechanic, he did it, and it was very difficult to align properly. He had to get another sensor. Big question: Will this be permanently aligned? I am afraid that when I drive the car, it will suddenly freeze or turn to full left or right when I am driving, especially during high speed.
I have a 2011 Ford Escape XLT and have the same problem. I called O'Reilly's Auto Parts and they told me it's the 80 Midi amp fuse bolted in the fuse box under the hood. It's costing me $11.00 each
Was driving slowly today in my 2009 and the power steering went out. Wasn't going fast but damn. Turned off the car, then back on and it steering was correct again. Crazy
Chris Campion that’s great news. Did the replace sensor or just reprogram,? I just cranked mine back up and it’s working fine now. Must be intermittent.
My 2012 has been doing the same thing. It was also produced in the Kansas City Assembly Plant. I'm pissed. It helps to make sure your tires are all the same kind, air pressure, and there are no problems with stuff like ball joints, control arms, that type of thing. It seems that problems with those cause it. However, it's been doing it again for none of those reasons now. Regardless, this can definitely cause an accident!!! Very dangerous!!!
My 2011 Ford Fusion Hybrid I bought brand new had the power steering assist go out at 58k miles. My warranty was up because the vehicle was over 5 years old low mileage because I don't drive it all the time because I have a second vehicle. I thought maybe there was a recall because it seems the electronic steering assist seems to be a common failure. I was told no recall on the car. I paid $2267.00 to have it replaced by the Ford dealership. After 10,000 miles the electronic steering assist went out again I çalled the Ford factory rep and they told me to take it back to the dealership that fixed it and get a report from them to send to verify the problem. I called the dealership and explained the problem and they said that they would have to charge me $170.00 to scan it. There's no way I will pay them to check their own work, and also plan to get rid of the vehicle ASAP. The second time it went out was on a curvey mountain road. These electronic steering assist can go out at anytime so please beware, the vehicle will still steer but with much effort and difficulty.
If you go have some one read the codes for your car you can find out pretty quick if it's the sensor. also I'm not sure if it happens everytime but your steering wheel while kind of be jittering if it's the sensor. If it is the retaining ring is almost impossible to take off and put on if you don't have the right tools
If your steering wheel jitters back and forth while driving or stationary at a stop with the wheel pointing straight ahead, it’s the torque sensor mounted on the steering column under the dash. If you’re a DIY person, better get the best circlip pliers available that open at least 2 -1/4”. It’s a big ring. I ground a pair of long nose angled pliers to form my own retaining ring remover.
My 2011 escape does this when I’m driving , usually only when it’s cold outside even if I let my car heat up first. And not when I turn it on… when I’ve been driving for a minute. I’m over it
Had the steering rotation sensor replaced and computer module reset and the power steering is still out. They did a diagnosis and said the whole steering column needs replaced. Anyone have ideas?
I have this issue with my 2011 Ford Fusion SEL! In 2015, there was a recall for 2011-2012 Ford Fusions for Power Steering Assist Failure, however, according to Ford, my particular 2011 Fusion has no recall because my car was built in June 2010 and the recall only involved Fusions build from September 2010 to February 2012! Well, I think this is BS because my power steering failure issue is identical to the recalls of the Fusions that were under recall! Ford doesn't want to fix my defect and wants me to pay over $2K for the replacement of the steering problems! NEVER, NEVER, NEVER AGAIN WOULD I EVER BUY A FORD, PERIOD!!! I actually inherited this Ford Fusion from my mom who was too disabled to drive it any longer.
Same with mine that I just bought from my Grandma. Needs a Column $1600, charging $2200 for column install. They already installed the torque sensor for $400
🤦♂️🤦♂️ mine is running around the same prices. They giving no guarantees and the three shops I went to don't even wanna touch it and say its not worth it. So will try to sell car now. Ford says they done the recall on this already but why is it still giving problems?
Mine is an 08 escape hybrid.. and all of a sudden the steering shaft assist failure sound came on while I was driving down the highway and went off... then today it just stopped turning completely and locked up absolutely.
same here. now i am thinking that any one who has posted here and read all these statements, if goes to buy a freeking ford again, shame on that person. i have had ford cars about five of them in the past, but this is my word to ford, i will walk but not give a duck to ford. ford is out of laegue . done with ford. give me a ford car and a million dollars, i will refuse to take.
The steering column is ONLY available from Ford dealership. Nobody else has them new. And I mean no one else. Order it from Ford and have your personal mechanic install it. It's way cheaper. It's only like four bolts holding it in.
my shits been doing this for like 2 months and i just been driving with it bc i don’t have the money to fix it. it’s ridiculous how this is a problem with so many of their cars.
My f.up 2. Smdh. I just left the shop 20 min ago and they want to charge me 2300 bucks...hell no. Give me my car back right now. I need the whole steering column. Bushing is bad.
Yeah my power steering 2009 Ford escape does exact same thing but mine's not from Canada I don't believe. Does it matter how long I've had it before I can take it and they fix the problem or
Is your steering wheel all jittery? Like dancing back and forth at a stop light? If so, it’s that stupid steering torque sensor. $160 at PowerSteeringSeals. EBay. Ford won’t honor the recall even if your car meets all criteria. Go figure.
I have same issue only Ford Escape 2011 Kansas assembly. Used to only happen when it's hot outside but now its happening regardless of the weather . What did you to fix and what did you change ? How much is the cost ?
I changed the entire steering column. It cost me about $800 USD. I got it at a discount from a friend at Ford. Had I not had that friend it would cost about $2,500.00 USD for parts and labor. Its a Ford only part. You have to buy it at Ford Dealership but you will need to get your own mechanic to install it as for will charge you alot. My mechanic charged me only $200.00 USD to install.
Hi, I fixed the problem! My father is an experienced mechanic. What he did was take out the steering column fuse and unplugged the battery. This allowed the car to reset itself as well as reset the power steering. After 5 minutes of letting the items rest, he put everything back together and it works just as new. If your power steering fuse is blown, it only cost 15 dollars to replace. Good luck.
Did it? My steering assist went out, and I'm poking around, trying to figure out where to go, thinking I might change out that torque sensor, since it seems like the least costly item to change.
you can fix this yourself just take a little time but really is not that hard. Power Steering Seals - OEM Power Steering Torque Sensor for Ford Escape with Alignment Tool CL8Z-3F818-A from Amazon it just a part watch a video how to and do as they do otherwise you will have to buy a new part and starting over. before you remove the steering wheel clock it to 11 o'clock and use a small bungy to hold that in place so it will not move when removed that is a big key not a step to miss. the front of the Escape will need to be on jacks in the front so the front wheels can move freely because the Power steering torque sensor need to be lined up in a little window it provided and you do that my tapping your front wheel with your hand to line the dot on the little window then pull the tab to lock. After you do that put it all back together turn the key to on wait for a min or two turn off then turn key to start then turn wheel all the way right until is stops then to the left until it stops this calibrates it and should be good to go.
I have a 2010 Ford and this is the second time this happened to me, the first time was last Tues and now today. I took it to a mechanic friend the first time and he plugged the car in and reset everything and it was "fine." I mean, it worked - if we're calling that fine - then all of a sudden, today, I'm driving a tank. I called Ford and the recall # 14S05 (this exact problem) was not showing up for my car.. I don't know what to do... Maybe I'll turn the car on and off a dozen times and see if that'll at least get to me and from work for the time being.
@@9496TULL - I got mine fixed for $620 CDN from Ford - It was like $230ish parts and the rest was labour... funny thing, when I took it in, they were like, this "fix" might not fix it, I wanted to scream, you made the damn car, fix it. It's been about two weeks since the repair and all seems to be well.

How often does your escape do this. I had this happen to me for the first time this morning. Didnt drive but down the street & brought it back home. When I got home from work I checked it & the steering wheel is fine. I have a 2012 Ford escape but bought it in 2011
I have the same issue, NOT all the time, but when i stop at stop signs some times it does it, i have to turn the car off and back on, I have never really had it do it when i was driving down the road, mostly when it is stopped, and I sure hope it never does do it when i am driving
I have a 2010 ford escape. The whole steering was replaced in march 2015 under recall. i didn't own it then. Mine does not work intermittently like yours did. I have no skaking or sudden loss. I have only strong arm steering. What did you end up finding out? I haven't had it scanned yet. Just interested. My fuses are good. How is it that car manufactures can't make a vehicle yet they just landed on Mars. 2.5 million miles away. My car has just over 150,000 km. That's 93000 miles.
Any Resolution? I have two '08 Mariners; 262,ooo miles, and 196,ooo. Bought both used; both had the recall service performed; very little other maintenance history. I put 24k on the first one; never had this problem (tranny started leaking like sieve!); driving second one almost a year, for ~14 k: one day, in January, snowy, around 25F, I drove 10 miles to an appointment, in there over an hour, came back out, started up fine, and as I was half turned, backing out of my spot, steering power assist failed. I didn't notice a dash alert. Maneuvered off to the side, shut it down & restarted. Been working ~fine for 3 more months, without recurrence...although, I might need to replace rear shocks: this AWD seems like it wants to roll over if you aren't real gentle at speed. Been reading about several people replacing torque sensor without solving the problem...still looking into it, BUT, is it just me, or is it possible that there is something funky in the ignition switch/harness that is failing to connect and power up the steering assist system, which is supposed to electrically assist without the engine running. Just trying to think it through...replacing column could eliminate such a fault. I know I had two Chrysler 2.2 liter sedans that both had corrosion failure in the power lead to the ignition control system. I discovered one, when I went to replace battery: wire was broken 2 inches from terminal clamp (should have been 1/2 longer so it was not under tension all the time.); 2nd one was not so obvious; had a distributor shaft reolaced (probably just charged me without doing it.), then a timing belt, then it happened (it was time, anyway...), then, it happened again...I noticed a temperature relationship: it was failing to start when it got quite cold (under 10F), after wet weather; warming the car up above freezing for several hours (while they 'worked on it'), meant something was then able to conduct electricity again! I searched, and found a corroded connector coming off the power module in the air intake ducting, where (for better, or worse) it gets 'cooled', but also, lots of exposure to some salty moisture in a Minnesota winter! A little splicing of wire solved these problems, which were more dangeroud than they sound, as the first time I was actually moving; almost on the highway ramp, when it cut out, and died, obviously the power steering immediately, aa well. Any other thoughts welcomed.
@@TheScandoman bought and installed a new one. Bought one for less than a couple hundred usd from power products. Worked fine. No resolve from Ford tho. Their response Too bad so sad. Which is what I expected.
I say get a petition going for sure my 2009 FORD ESCAPE started in December 2017 been driving like that since than no one seems to wanna help me with the problem!!! ford recall or not, they said mine didn't fall in the right lot group but the year is right go figure?? it sucks my arms are really sore and tired from driving it like this and is very frustrating!! I really like the vehicle but this is ridiculous coming from such a BIG company!! So please get something going im def in on it!!!! feeling tired and frustrated!!!! prob have man arms by summertime lol
Samantha Fowler you may have an electrical issue not just the steerig column. Check all your fuses first then go from there. Sounds like an electrical short or some type eletrical issue.
I have a 2012 ford escape xlt and i went to start it last night and out the blue this started happening. It just out the blue the wheel was hard to turn
I can see why electric power steering would be something people would like, but at least hydraulic PS failures are kinda entertaining (wheel spins). No PS isn't that bad, you just have to try a little bit :)
This has just started to happen to my 2009 escape . It's a handed down car from my aunt . It has under 70,000. Miles on it . I don't know what I'm going to do , don't have the money, and don't really trust anyone to honestly and fairly fix it . 😔
Well you got to do something. You can only get the steering column part from Ford though. So buy it from them and find a good mechanic that can put it on. It's only held on by four bolts.
I have a 08 mariner. I bought just the torque sensor. Didn't fix it. So then I bought the entire column with electric steering motor and sensor. It was a little bit of a pain to put in but it's all back together with no more issues so far. It's been driving fine. I paid around $230 for the column.
@@Ross_Embossed there is still the issue of needing someone to install it , usually the labor is the most costly thing. I don't have the money for it to be honest, especially in so many cases the problem returns .I've just been driving it like it is for over a year now. Some days it's fine other days the power won't come back now matter how many times I turn it off and on. It's really unfortunate and unfair and to me unlawful that Ford doesn't take responsibility for ALL of these vehicles that have the same dangerous issue , regardless of the place they were made . They dis a recall for some and then washed their hands for the rest of us that didn't get a recall. 😕😑😥

Intermittently too. After I turn my car off and on again, then it works.
Jo N Your welcome. Really happy to know that this vid helped you. Soooo awesome!!!!
Thank you so much! We took a road trip from KC to North Dakota, and now driving from North Dakota to Iowa and THIS just happened. Now you can imagine... In the middle of no fun**ing where how scary that can be!
I drove on interstate 80 in Iowa before. I was in the middle of nowhere. I feel your pain.
Thank God you ok, I was luckily only just driving to Walgreens a half mile away!!
RedRosesDead07 Wow I'm glad glad you got home safe.
I had the same experience yesterday. Can u please tell me how to solve it
Hi i had the same issue yesterday while driving. Can u tell me how it's solved
@@rainforlife7699 I didn't have the money to get it fixed and Ford did not recall it or offer repairs. We used it as a trade in for another vehicle.
Appreciate your time to share. I just woke up with that signal on my 2010 ford Escape. Thanks
What did you end up doing?
Thank you! That just happened to me on the way home. I ran for the fluid.... No power steering fluid reservoir in my Escape. Now I know it's electrical.
$4,000+ to get fixed. Dump it if you can.
Be careful.
Following up on this, what did they end up changing and how much was the cost? Having the same issues.
I to have this issue' did you get any info ? price ? etc. ?
We need to make more videos and get more people involve.
Mar Mer I totally agree. And share on facebook too.
Is a Facebook person that started a form about ford. I did lots of research and find lots of cases, now instead of everyone complain is time to act.
How many people in here want to get action about this??? reply and let me know. K Smith have videos that we need to subscribe. Maybe a "class action suit" is in order here
I'll NEVER purchase another Ford Motor Company product ever again. They quoted me $1500.00 for a new electric steering rack because Ford refused to honor their product with 50K miles on a bad power steering issue.
2011 Ford Escape - I was just quoted $2400 - they won't honor because the even though it was produced at the Kansas City Plant - they say he wasn't built in the time frame they they suggested - ended September 2010...so if 2010 is when they produced the 2011,
I am completely stumped as to why my 2011 isn't covered under the recall. Always thought a recall was a recall.
Me either. Sorry for your terrible experience.
Our is an 09 and they won't honor it either.
My Son Has A 2010 Ford That Has This Problem. Thanks 😊
I’ve had this issue with a ‘12 Ford Fusion. It was “fixed” under a recall and has happened 4 or 5 times since. Right now it’s sitting at the shop needing a $1200 steering rack replacement.
Jesus Christ...that is expensive....I am having this issue!!!
Omg thank you for your comment! Mine was doing this this morning and I tried your trick and it worked!
Having same issue. They should be all called back, obviously Ford problem
Thanks for video. How did you fix it?
My friend has a Ford Focus and it has this same problem. The shop wants $2900 to fix it. Ford has apparently put in this new system saving them money on the build side but screwing the customers later on. They must fix this problem. I wonder how many people have died as a result of losing power steering while driving. This is why lawyers are needed to make them accountable for their actions.
Same, 2009 Escape XLT. Power Steering loss and Ford did NOT want to fix. They claim it's not considered a recall issue.
Same here
Going through this same thing with Ford right now. But I won't let it drop. Thanks for the video.
hucklebuck1975 Give em hell! Let me know what happens if you can.
I have a 2009 mercury mariner premier. Same thing as an escape. Having the same issue. Very dangerous. Ford has lost my business FOREVER. I have had so many issues with this vehicle... recalls and things that should be recalls. Thank you for this video.

I’ll never buy another ford again.

This is happening to my escape (2014) and when I called ford, since my VIN doesn’t match up with the recall VINs, it’s all on me. Seriously? Clearly multiple other people are having the same issue, how many people will have to get in accidents before they extend the recall?

*Door latch issues
I can definitely relate to this issue.
Hey I just got the power steering issue, how did you finally fixed without having to turn it on every time it fails?

Now, the steering fails when I'm driving, and is progressively doing it more often.
dang, my 2011 escape was built in kansas but the isn't egilible for the recall. thanks for the video tho! was worth a shot

How much did it cost ya?
They probably just charged your battery
@teeemoni how much was the update
What codes did they update???

@@redbear9943 It happened on our move to Florida from Michigan (that was fun), three years ago. There were months it worked fine and then months it didn’t. There’s another video discussing swapping it all out, not just the sensor which may or may not be the problem. I told my fiancé to save a bit and then we’re fixing it. I got the same issue in Mercury Mariner 2009 like two days ago still not working 😞
Steven Zelaya File complaint with NHTSA ....the more complaints the more likely it will be recalled and fixed for free
On mine shuts off intermittently, makes it very dangerous to drive.
I just replaced my tie rods and sway bars and definitely the alignments off. Could this cause the power steering assist fault issue?
Yes im having that problem right now i have a 2010 fusion
Haven't heard that coming from a fusion but it is a Ford aslo.
What do u do, you fixed?
@@nathaniellandrewobregonana4978 Yes I paid to get it fixed. But not at ford. I only brought the part from Ford as no one else sells it.

I filed my complaint. Y'all please do the same. I am a single mother and cannot afford costly repairs!
How does one do that exactly?
How did you do that? I have a 2011 Ford Escape what was not on recall but also out of Kansas Plant and this just happened to me while driving. I am also a mother of 3, thankfully my kids weren't in the car!

46,000 mileage. And doing same thing
We had the electronic steering replaced.. one year later same issue
schwinnbiking smh. Not cool.
My 2009 escape did it yesterday. Waiting for my mechanic to look at it.
My 2009 Mercury Mariner have the same issue. They told me it will be 2300 dollars to fix. B.S.
I have a 2011 Ford Escape XLT and have the same problem. I called O'Reilly's Auto Parts and they told me it's the 80 Midi amp fuse bolted in the fuse box under the hood. It's costing me $11.00 each
Hi, have exact same Escape- 2011 XLT. did the fuse fix the issue for you?
Was driving slowly today in my 2009 and the power steering went out. Wasn't going fast but damn. Turned off the car, then back on and it steering was correct again. Crazy

I have a 2013 escape and power steering is out. I like no power steering is this OK?
Great illustrations well done..
So a sensor might be causing the whole steering to go like this ?
@@redbear9943 yes because this car has electronic power steering
If your steering wheel jitters back and forth while driving or stationary at a stop with the wheel pointing straight ahead, it’s the torque sensor mounted on the steering column under the dash. If you’re a DIY person, better get the best circlip pliers available that open at least 2 -1/4”. It’s a big ring. I ground a pair of long nose angled pliers to form my own retaining ring remover.

Can you let us know what it takes to repair?
My 2009 just did this yesterday... 😑
They already installed the torque sensor for $400
Rip offs
🤦♂️🤦♂️ mine is running around the same prices. They giving no guarantees and the three shops I went to don't even wanna touch it and say its not worth it. So will try to sell car now. Ford says they done the recall on this already but why is it still giving problems?
Mine is an 08 escape hybrid.. and all of a sudden the steering shaft assist failure sound came on while I was driving down the highway and went off... then today it just stopped turning completely and locked up absolutely.
My steering locks up once in a while aswell. Whats was your solution? Thanks

Thank you. This was helpful. What did you end up doing?
The steering column is ONLY available from Ford dealership. Nobody else has them new. And I mean no one else. Order it from Ford and have your personal mechanic install it. It's way cheaper. It's only like four bolts holding it in.

mine just started to do same thing ford were I bought it at said they could fix it for about 1500.
Is your steering wheel all jittery? Like dancing back and forth at a stop light? If so, it’s that stupid steering torque sensor. $160 at PowerSteeringSeals. EBay. Ford won’t honor the recall even if your car meets all criteria. Go figure.
It happened to me today that's why I'm watching this
I have same issue only Ford Escape 2011 Kansas assembly.

The diagnostic code I got was B2278 for this power steering assist fault.
Wow yet another one. Smh. How many more people will have this issue?
Harvey Ibarra mine just happened this morning
Hi, I fixed the problem! My father is an experienced mechanic. What he did was take out the steering column fuse and unplugged the battery. This allowed the car to reset itself as well as reset the power steering. After 5 minutes of letting the items rest, he put everything back together and it works just as new. If your power steering fuse is blown, it only cost 15 dollars to replace. Good luck.
Our daughters 08 just had the same problem today hoping Ford will do something but it doesn't look very promising
I just ordered a torque sensor to correcr this issue hopefully it works
Did it? My steering assist went out, and I'm poking around, trying to figure out where to go, thinking I might change out that torque sensor, since it seems like the least costly item to change.
@@tifreak8x did you fix yours?
@@Adrian-lv5kk Yeah, but I had to have someone clear the code before the power steering came back.
you can fix this yourself just take a little time but really is not that hard.

It was doing it pretty often a few times a day everyday. It was extremely annoying.
I have the same issue, NOT all the time, but when i stop at stop signs some times it does it, i have to turn the car off and back on, I have never really had it do it when i was driving down the road, mostly when it is stopped, and I sure hope it never does do it when i am driving

Barb McCool Your not alone.
Been reading about several people replacing torque sensor without solving the problem...still looking into it,
BUT, is it just me, or is it possible that there is something funky in the ignition switch/harness that is failing to connect and power up the steering assist system, which is supposed to electrically assist without the engine running.

No PS isn't that bad, you just have to try a little bit :)
my 2012 escape did that today. ive only had it 3 months. Im gonna raise some hell
Were you able to solve it?
Call your local Auto Salvage yards for used car parts. Takes some good luck and good timing but there are a lot of these cars out there!
