  • This is the first of two videos which accompany "Rain of Fire B-29 Superfortress FIFI 75th Birthday Edition."
It highlights the experiences of the Author, Colonel Charles Phillips. Col Phillips was a B-29 Aircraft Commander, who flew 31 missions, including a Ditching on Aug 6, 1945. Portions of this video are from a Brute Force segment hosted by George C. Scott.
Video clips, interspersed with Col Phillips’ comments, provide a first-hand view of those dangerous missions, from Flak to Fighters, attempted Ramming by a fighter, tremendous turbulence of flying through the clouds of fire and smoke, and of course long missions meant fuel was always a worry.
There is also discussion of the impact on the flight crews from General Lemay’s decision to bomb from low-level at night, the critical importance of Iwo Jima as a divert field and immense relief of having P-51s from Iwo Jima protecting the B-29 formations.
