Revisiting the Subaru powered Q2

- I recently stumbled upon some pretty old video footage of my Subaru EJ-22 powered Q2. I decided to try and clean it up with some modern technology and share it again for my friends in the Quickie - Q2 - Q200 world that are still building and need a bit of encouragement!!
In this footage, it was powered by a normally aspirated Subaru EJ-22. Previous to this engine, I ran a turbocharged Subaru EA-81 engine.
I still think the Q2 is one of the prettiest home built airplanes ever designed. It's a good thing I don't have my pilot's license or I would have to have one!
Looks like a little fairing on the back of the wing root could gain a little efficiency improvement. Gorgeous plane, brings a smile to my face just watching it fly.
What a cool looking plane. The best view was the plane is coming at you. It looks like an X-wing fighter from Star Wars. Thank you for sharing this REALLY NEAT plane.

I built my Quickie (single seat) in 1984. Love that plane. Gutless as hell but once in the air it is a blast. Nice video.

'I loved that plane at first sight. I'm looking for two issues of a builder magazine (80' or 90' ) where I read the story of a gentleman who built his Q2 to visit his sons on the west coast. He found it more civilized to have his wife sitting next to him rather than in front or behind :)

This is the very plane I and my friend Greg who purchased it were nearly killed in! Very hard pancaked landing attempt caused the counter weight for the canard to get wedged under the header tank locking the control stick for pitch control! Luckily we still had aileron and aileron reflex to give us as much angle of attack as we could get to keep it flying as long as we were over 100mph!! Nursed it over to Albuquerque International and crash landed it at about 100mph on their 10'000ft runway breaking the left wing off and shattering the 3 blade warp drive prop. Luckily both Greg and I were able to walk away not a scratch. Thank you Lord for sparing our lives that day 🙏 We made the local news just Google NewMexico Sunport plane crash landing. Hands down the scariest thing of my entire life! 😱

I fell into the classic trap of aircraft engines being expensive and "old tech" as well as auto conversions being easy, new tech, and more efficient. All are simply opinions that us builders use to justify our actions. I know fly very reliably, efficiently, and worry free behind a Lycoming.
I wonder if anyone has ever built a Quickie, or Q200 with larger wing area for more efficient cruising at lower power, and lower stall speed, as the original design seems to have a high safe landing speed. I understand that a different wing design would probably lower the top speed performance of the design, but some builders might be willing to sacrifice a little performance, to gain a bit more safety. I'd also be interested in learning more about the feasibility of using Subaru engines in light aircraft, and find out how much cost savings can be had when doing so, in experimental aircraft, where the owner/builder is willing to take on the added risk of a non-certified engine.
What sort of range and cruise speed would a turbocharged Quickie get? It sounds like a real science/engineering project however, one with huge rewards. Even just turbonormalizing such a slippery airframe promises you could challenge Mooneys and Barons.

I'm looking again, two years later, at your YT on that so intelligent plane. Question: Is there a "pusher" with that kind of wings ??? Is it possible to design such a plane with a rear engine & twin wings with no horizontal stabilizer at the tail of the airplane ???
It's called the VariEZ, or it's variant LongEZ, which are both precursor designs by Burt Rutan, but they look nothing like the Quickie, or Q2.
AWESOME little aircraft.. Just ❤ the design. A Turbo 141hp Rotax would sort it out beautifully
That would be cool! A $40k motor on a $10k airplane does make it painful to sell though.
@@JDFinley $$$ 40K.. oh my goodness that is crazy. I have $65k blwnn big blocj chevy with all the Goodies. Guess thats aviation 4U. I cant see that liitle Rotax being much more different internally than there there jet ski motors other than Aviation Certification. And there jet ski engines r producing 300+ hp. . Only inteenal differences could be a Billet crank rods & pistons. Cant see them using a billet block. . CrAZy $$
Ya, I used to blame aviation as well. Then I began seeing the price of boat motors - they may be even worse!! Definitely crazy numbers.
@@JDFinley mines a boat motor , jet boat. The jet unit owes me $10,500 . It has the best of everything. A marine intercooler is $4900 + & the top of the range blower $8-10k from Whipple in the states. My intercooler ows me 2k + $2900k for the best Whipple Cuprinikol core. How Aussie $$ is hurting me . Ouche. Going 2 upgrade the intake manifold 4 a billet australian one, like a mini mini tunnel ram. Should see me right on 1000hp

Hi John! Great to hear from you again! Yes, direct-drive. Been a while but seems like a limited it to 3500 rpm. Maybe saw 3600 once or twice! 😇

Thanks love the vid. On the fence about purchasing one. Pls tell me, is this a liquid cooled engine and is that a rear scoop directing air over a radiator in the rear? The model I am looking at was set up like that but over heated. Am thinking to convert it back to an air colled Revmaster. Any advice?
Yes, mine was last powered by a liquid cooled Subaru 2.2l and that is a P-51 style radiator behind the cockpit. Depending on your location and type of flying, they are often underpowered with a Revmaster.

I can see only one problem with that design, every time you take off and land, you put fatigue strain on the whole wing instead of just the landing gear.. Composites are not the best in that regard.. It this an issue that's been previously raised or not?
Yes. As I recall the third variant was redesigned so one could use the option of aluminum legs that are used/sold for the Sonari aircrafts. Tried and tested landing gear. The q2 had already peaked in popularity by the time the plans were updates, so not sure how many were built without wheels on the wing.

Are the airfoils (canard and wing) on the Quickie One and Q-200 the same dimensions and contours?

1. how many HP has that engine
2. what is the empty weight
3. what is the stall speed with flaps down
4. what is the max low altitude true air air speed when going full power and flying horizontaly- ( not descending) .
5. Is it safe when you pull + 4 G ,or even + 6 G?
6. How big is the tank, what range can it go at what cruising speed ?

Its a great airplane to nearly get killed in! You gotta be very good on the rudder pedals and have nerves of steel to fly this plane (successfully)

I wonder if you could build a carbon fiber quickie?
I have read that carbon fiber requires vacuum molding in an oven to really get the strength to weight. That would be exceedingly expensive. You'd likely only reduce the airframe weight by 10-20lbs also.
@@FlyMeAirplane It is obvious that any given amount of glass is far heavier than carbon. And you can still get bubbles and voids with glass as easily as with carbon if you don't use vacume.
Gr8 Question. I have been thinking the same thing 4 the past 2hrs Vacuum Bagged of course. With a turbo prop . Now we r talk ' speed

Hi! What is the added horizontal shape under the curved part of the rear fuselage.? I haven't seen that on other Q2's. Some kind of narrow stowage locker? Thanks

yes and no. There are "plans" available but the fiberglass components were made in molds and to my knowledge nobody makes those components anymore.
